is there and app that can use google maps to show my location and get my coordinates and still be able to insert coordinates ...and other options like record tracks ...it would be very helpfull when going fishing thanks
Look for one of any Geocaching applications, tracking programs, etc.. You clearly haven't even looked in the Market yet.
Be aware that actively tracking takes a lot of battery. If you're just looking for "where did I start" you could launch it before you hit the dock, drop a waypoint, then when you're coming back in navigate back to that point. Even a "where is my car" app would work for that.
i searched everywhere the best i could find is mymapseditor
Google My Tracks combined with Gmaps and Google Map Editor. Awesome.

Look again. Like I said in the first post, any geocaching program will do it. You said "place a point on a map" and I assume you also want to navigate back to it, but regardless, ANY geocaching program will do that. Among many others, including "where is my car" type apps. And NO they do not require creating GPX.
Good grief.

how can one store gps location of a perticular person?
if i am visiting a freind's place in neighbouring city and would like to store his gps co-ordinates in my contact list, how can i do that? this will help me if i am visiting same place next time. this would be helpful in many countries where location can not be found from zip / post code.
thanks
You could save the location in your favorites in google maps, but i don't know of a way to directly attach it to a contact.
gpstoday shows the actual street address for your location, and many among other options, allows you to attach the address to a contact or create a new contact with the current address.
"Single tap to create a new contact with your current location as the address, or save the current location as an existing contact's address. Imagine not having to type the full street address on the PPC keyboard!"

The only problem i see with that is this.....

I've never heard of a standard for it, but you could always simply store it as a note attached to the contact in the format of lat,lon
You can then just typically paste that into things, like Google Maps.
You can also record the spot and later put it into Google Earth or something, then save and load that KML file on the Tilt. If you 'launch' the KML file, all the points in it will show up in the Google Maps application.

Thanks for the replies...
currently i store lat/lon in "Office loc" field of address book of a contact and have to copy paste in google maps if i need to get location on maps.
i guess there is also not any easy way to get lat/lon in "google maps" of my current location / a point on the map. if i dont want to start any other app and need to get gps location from google maps then i need to follow steps below
1. on the map tap on desired location and select "Mark start point"
2. click on "Search" option and search for some poi
3. "Tap for options"
4. "Directions to here"
5. copy gps coords from the "Starting point" field.
is there any easier way than this?
thanks once again.

have you considered using trackme (found on xda).
Its great as it logs you journey which can be uploaded to google maps, google earth etc, its useful as you can take a foto and upload it along with your track. You can also view map/track on the app itself.
Check it out.
Also consider noni-plot gps, although no where near as useful as the above.
Happy playing

As for the guide, yes ive started writing GPS settings guide, as so many peeps ask about it. I think i may have chosen one of the hardest bloody subjects though as it really does depend on so many variables and that there is no right or wrongs!!! So unfortunately that doesnt make a very usefull guide, but i was going to list freeware/useful apps to it, so i guess it might not be that useless after all
Is there an app, like, i.e. GPS Sports Tracker, that can be used together with Google Maps?
Or do you know if I can use CoPilot Live for tracking (and not only for navigation)?
Thanks!

Try Sportypal! It is free and good.
Trackme uses Google maps and is free.
Works fine on HD2 and has geo-fence. Just search XDA.

Eehm...TrackMe , of course!
I used "Trackme" on my Tilt and now have it on HD2.
I use it on my boat at night as an anchor drag alarm. Set the geo-fence for twice the distance of the length of my anchor line. Mark the position when I first drop the anchor. Phone moves outside the circle and it sends me a text message that sets off an alarm.
Also you can get it to send a text or email with position by sending the phone a text message with a custom message created by you. Good to find your phone if lost.
Also when we leave the boat for the day we leave one phone on the boat and it will text us if the boat moves from a pre-determined circle. Text or email has a link to a google map showing the track since started.
Hi guys,
I'll be going to Spain in August, and will be taking my phone with me. I will be using it with airplane mode on though (I'm taking it as a camera, as my actual camera is worse than the X10's)
I've been looking around for caching Google maps, and found that the Brut mod of Google maps has this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=630887
I was just wondering if there is anyone who already has cached maps for Spain (more accurately, Valencia) that they could host somewhere.
I know its hardly likely, but worth asking!
If not then I will be browsing a lot of Spain tonight to save the maps to cache so I can use them later. (and maybe post them somewhere if anyone else needs them)
Cheers
it says you need a rooted phone.......let me know if this works for you.......and sry i can't help...

The only bit that needs root is the uninstall of the existing Google Maps.
I can confirm that it does work on a non-rooted handset, I installed the apk using Astro without problems and now run the Brut version alongside Google Maps
And don't worry about it... it was a long shot anyway
this is pretty cool..
sorry i can't help i'm still new to android
but does this mean you can use google maps without incurring data (offline)?
i have an x10 and i am too looking for good pre loaded maps for navigation (i don't have a data plan)

Sort of, yes.
It will only save them to your cache once you have viewed them.
So if you need maps for Scotland, you need to have already viewed Scotland's maps on your phone, for each level of zoom you want to use them in.
Looking at the original thread, it looks like they will be adding a download function, so you can do exactly as you want, (and I do) Download on PC > move to phone > use Google maps without using data/in airplane mode/where you have no signal etc
I can't really answer your question. But did you check out MapDroyd? It lets you download and view your location on maps of entire countries. You can't search or get directions, but the maps contain details such as street names.

Thanks man, this could be exactly what I need... I'll try it locally first test locations etc (one comment said his location was out) but I can still read a map if all else fails
EDIT: It did work, but for the areas of Spain I need are not detailed enough. Cities seem to be OK and rather detailed, but villages (Bunol being the one I need) have nothing at all... just the main roads around the outside.
I will look to save the maps in Brut for the detail...
Try andnav2.
You can download the map files over at this " http://wiki.andnav.org/index.php/List_Of_MapTilePacks/ " link
I hope that you will enjoy your trip to Spain ^^

Yea, that is the main problem... it takes ages, especially to make sure there are no missing gaps.
Thing is, once they are saved it is amazingly smooth to load between zoom levels.
It would be nice if there was an option to download all tiles from a set area to cache...
I think they are working on an update to allow this, but until then I will have to slowly save them to my cache manually
do you know anything about getting directions?
if i want to get directions, do i have to cache the route like i do with the maps?

You don't HAVE to... I believe (but may be wrong) that google maps will temporarily cache a route's map tiles for a journey you have selected. If you go off route, normal Google maps would connect to to 3g to get the new map tiles.
I haven't tried the navigation feature with just cache tiles though, so I don't know if you can use it purely off line

also where do you put filter on Google map search?
eg how can I limit search

and yes I see the distance is in eerr.. miles.. I mean who uses that old system..

Indeed, latitude is in miles as well.
...and google still has yet to update the android maps API. The google map-kit for iPhone is still light years ahead of the android.
It's impossible to write a decent map app that performs anywhere near as well as google maps.
I would like to see my own layers. Pics of my kids doing stuff at parks, skateboarding, etc. That would be pretty cool. Point at the ocean and see my kid do an off the top on a wave from last spring. Hah.
Just a thought.

You can do that now. You just can't get information about individual map tiles, even something as simple as onMapFinishedLoading() doesn't exist. That means your layers will (often) load before the map is loaded, which looks like crap.
Thank you very much.I Like it
Curious. Does it pull xif data from Picasa for the image overlay? You would think that would be pretty easy to pull off. I mean I would subscribe to other folks layers to see what they do, where they go,etc. So, if I follow a skateboarder and he shares his layer I can see what trick he did at places I also skate. Video embed would be even more awesome.

I installed a NAND rom and was great, but it lacks of most of google apps like Gmail and Google Maps...
I have tried searching but could not find a topic to match what I'm after.
Does anyone know of a way to get a satellite views with GPS support for use offline? Ideally I could do with GPX (routes/tracks) file support as well.
As far as I know google earth is only available for android and does not have offline cacheing - I would have to make my phone dual boot as well (I need windows for some things)
I have tried J2ME for google maps but cannot scroll and I don't think can use gpx routes.
To make it clear what I'd like is to view my current position on a satellite map with a route (gpx file) shown on there as well. I need to be able to do this without access to a phone network.
It's a shame I can't just run google earth from my HD2 since that's exactly what I'm after.
Hi mate,
how to run google earth without network access?? this wont work on your pc either.
but maybe this is helpful for you:
i recently discovered that google maps on winmo is capable to display .kmz/kml files. these are google earth exports with e.g. a track.
if you just need to display a small area, load the track in google maps. on next start up your last loaded "picture" is cached and therefore u dont need network access. otherwise if u want to navigate you should get something proper like tt or igo.
edit: this should be your match: http://www.gps-mate.de/de/produkte/GPS-Mate/beschreibung.php (using osm)

I have been trying open mobile maps but cannot find how to get satellite maps on there. I found a 1 year old thread on here about changing the maps.xml file and tried that but either doesn't work or I am missing something. There is an option at add maps with a URL but I don't know if this would work with google satellite maps and I can't find out what the url shoudl be.

NoniGPSPlot for "PocketPC" is running perfectly on my HD2 (and my old Trinity).
Tip: Don't remember to quit it when you don't need it anymore 'cause GPS uses lots of battery power. Tap on the main screen for a few seconds to get to the main menu.
