Hi guys,
I'll be going to Spain in August, and will be taking my phone with me. I will be using it with airplane mode on though (I'm taking it as a camera, as my actual camera is worse than the X10's)
I've been looking around for caching Google maps, and found that the Brut mod of Google maps has this:

I was just wondering if there is anyone who already has cached maps for Spain (more accurately, Valencia) that they could host somewhere.
I know its hardly likely, but worth asking!
If not then I will be browsing a lot of Spain tonight to save the maps to cache so I can use them later. (and maybe post them somewhere if anyone else needs them)

The only bit that needs root is the uninstall of the existing Google Maps.
I can confirm that it does work on a non-rooted handset, I installed the apk using Astro without problems and now run the Brut version alongside Google Maps
And don't worry about it... it was a long shot anyway

Sort of, yes.
It will only save them to your cache once you have viewed them.
So if you need maps for Scotland, you need to have already viewed Scotland's maps on your phone, for each level of zoom you want to use them in.
Looking at the original thread, it looks like they will be adding a download function, so you can do exactly as you want, (and I do) Download on PC > move to phone > use Google maps without using data/in airplane mode/where you have no signal etc
I can't really answer your question. But did you check out MapDroyd? It lets you download and view your location on maps of entire countries. You can't search or get directions, but the maps contain details such as street names.

Thanks man, this could be exactly what I need... I'll try it locally first test locations etc (one comment said his location was out) but I can still read a map if all else fails
EDIT: It did work, but for the areas of Spain I need are not detailed enough. Cities seem to be OK and rather detailed, but villages (Bunol being the one I need) have nothing at all... just the main roads around the outside.
I will look to save the maps in Brut for the detail...

Yea, that is the main problem... it takes ages, especially to make sure there are no missing gaps.
Thing is, once they are saved it is amazingly smooth to load between zoom levels.
It would be nice if there was an option to download all tiles from a set area to cache...
I think they are working on an update to allow this, but until then I will have to slowly save them to my cache manually

You don't HAVE to... I believe (but may be wrong) that google maps will temporarily cache a route's map tiles for a journey you have selected. If you go off route, normal Google maps would connect to to 3g to get the new map tiles.
I haven't tried the navigation feature with just cache tiles though, so I don't know if you can use it purely off line

Anyone have problem with Google Maps won't closed problem? It always running at background and drain the battery.
Someone here said you should not run any task killer and let droid take care of it, but why let map running at backgrand all day to drain the battery out?
i don't know abt u guys but i think MOTONAV is pretty cool!! it provides turn-by-turn and the maps are installed into the SD
so basically it works jz like garmin~~~

Sounds promising...
Does it have the ability to pinpoint your location on a top down map as I won't be driving and really just want to be able to find my way around a strange area

Copilot is another alternative, works brilliantly on the X10.
Available on the Market and I'm sure via some Google browsing too

There are no free, good quality, non-internet navigation solutions that I know of.
If it's good, then the people who made it good are going to charge you for their efforts - and the costs they incur in having to buy the map data which they give to you to store on your device.
There might be some low grade regional software available, depending on where you live.

Heh, sure with Google Maps, it use data connection on google maps server...Why dont use some cheaper data tarife by your network provider ? Otherwise, you can use many GPS and navigations apps, serch google and you will found...

Do u know any navi app for Japan?
I just use Google Navigation and it's worked perfectly every time I've used it so far. The only feature I'd like that it doesn't have is saving a list of favorite places and being able to manually name them.

You could star some locations. Star = favorite in all Google's services. But I don't see possibility to name them.
Or you could create contacts with addresses - then you will be able to name them. But yeah, this is quite ugly.
A UK Magazine did a review of Nav software recently and said Google Navigation was the best and got you there in the quickest amount of time. Downside was that it requires 3G to work (Not a big deal today really is it?)

I'm using Navigon with the Europe map, mainly for when I cross the borders and roaming is out of the question.
Otherwise, I like Google Navigation.
Google navigation isn't available for Norway yet, so can't use it. Gave Navigon a try, since they have a trial, seems to be rather nice, though only possible to get English voice it seems, would rather have it in Norwegian.

Yeah if you could name your starred locations it would be perfect. Now you just have a huge list of addresses and you don't remember what's what.
It does if you're travelling to overseas, the romaing data charges are still killing people...
Perhaps Mobile Atlas Creator + RMaps / BigPlanet Tracks would be a practical solution.
It allows you to produce an offline map database and load into the SD card.
I'm using navigon which works very well on my x10. The best one in my opinion, and I've tried a few. Sort of similar to igo in wm6.

Anyone figured out yet how to change the distance units in Places? Everything else is in metric, but I get the damn distances Places in ****ing miles.
also where do you put filter on Google map search?

And for me everything (latitude, places...) is in miles
Indeed, latitude is in miles as well.
...and google still has yet to update the android maps API. The google map-kit for iPhone is still light years ahead of the android.
It's impossible to write a decent map app that performs anywhere near as well as google maps.
I would like to see my own layers. Pics of my kids doing stuff at parks, skateboarding, etc. That would be pretty cool. Point at the ocean and see my kid do an off the top on a wave from last spring. Hah.

You can do that now. You just can't get information about individual map tiles, even something as simple as onMapFinishedLoading() doesn't exist. That means your layers will (often) load before the map is loaded, which looks like crap.

Curious. Does it pull xif data from Picasa for the image overlay? You would think that would be pretty easy to pull off. I mean I would subscribe to other folks layers to see what they do, where they go,etc. So, if I follow a skateboarder and he shares his layer I can see what trick he did at places I also skate. Video embed would be even more awesome.

I installed a NAND rom and was great, but it lacks of most of google apps like Gmail and Google Maps...
I have tried searching but could not find a topic to match what I'm after.
Does anyone know of a way to get a satellite views with GPS support for use offline? Ideally I could do with GPX (routes/tracks) file support as well.
As far as I know google earth is only available for android and does not have offline cacheing - I would have to make my phone dual boot as well (I need windows for some things)
I have tried J2ME for google maps but cannot scroll and I don't think can use gpx routes.
To make it clear what I'd like is to view my current position on a satellite map with a route (gpx file) shown on there as well. I need to be able to do this without access to a phone network.
It's a shame I can't just run google earth from my HD2 since that's exactly what I'm after.

but maybe this is helpful for you:
i recently discovered that google maps on winmo is capable to display .kmz/kml files. these are google earth exports with e.g. a track.
if you just need to display a small area, load the track in google maps. on next start up your last loaded "picture" is cached and therefore u dont need network access. otherwise if u want to navigate you should get something proper like tt or igo.

I have been trying open mobile maps but cannot find how to get satellite maps on there. I found a 1 year old thread on here about changing the maps.xml file and tried that but either doesn't work or I am missing something. There is an option at add maps with a URL but I don't know if this would work with google satellite maps and I can't find out what the url shoudl be.

This looks promising - a dumb question though can I use version 3.02 for ;pocket pc' or 'smartphone' ? I don't know if the HD2 running windows mobile is classed as either of these things?

NoniGPSPlot for "PocketPC" is running perfectly on my HD2 (and my old Trinity).
Tip: Don't remember to quit it when you don't need it anymore 'cause GPS uses lots of battery power. Tap on the main screen for a few seconds to get to the main menu.
I dont know what you are really searching for...

I can get noni gps to run i used the smartphone files. the problem now is downloading the satellite maps in enough detail on my pc with the noni application it will take several weeks or months to download the 8gb of data i need.

Do you need a satellite view of the whole world?
Zoom to the interresting place an then adjust the slider how deep (that means how many zoom levels of) the images have to be downloaded.

I've been using NaviComputer 0.96 on my oversea trips. I would download maps (can be satellite maps too) before leaving, add POI and have no problem using if offline while on oversea trips. Best of all, it's free. It can do gpx tracks and log file too.
I tried to use Google maps with navigation on the watch without being connected to the phone. I hade a simcard in the watch. But the Maps app for Wear still doesn't navigate using only your watch. It'll only show you a map with your current position. If that's how it's supposed to be, it's sad..

It dosen't work for me either on a LG Urbane 2nd Edition with a sim installed. The Androidpit article is just plain wrong.
I can do very limited navigating to a very nearby Google decided point of interest IF my phone is on at home and the phones location is set to high accuracy. Nothing standalone about that.
I really dont understand why we can't have full (if simplified) navigation with Google Maps on the watch, everything needed is there now we have a keyboard. I have even tried sideloading the full version of Here WeGo, offline maps and all. It works...and navigates...but because its meant for full android is unusable on the watch screen. Someone needs to create a simple offline navigation program for Wear. I can't beleive Google have restricted Maps on the watch to make it virtually useless standalone.

So you can type in an address or postcode (not a predifined point of interest) and navigate to that address? And does your phone have to be on at home?
I hope you dont mind me asking. I would love to solve this navigation thing.....

I have only BT version and found the interface of google map is bad. But I think google assistant will enable navigation to the location you speak to?
Just a quick update...sideloaded Navigon 4.6.2 and its works and is useable standaone on my watch (a LG Watch Urbane 2nd Edition).
No back button means I need to use Wear 2.0s force close an app ability each time I change a setting in the program but once its set up it works. Maps all downloaded to the watch via wifi.
Screen is a little cluttered but useable, and it does take up a big chunk of memory on the watch, but for driving it works pretty well. (walking navigation screen is, sadly, unuseable). For the record it seems to use 1% of battery power every 2 minutes...meaning it could potentially last 3 hours!!
