gps co-ords in contacts - General Questions and Answers

how can one store gps location of a perticular person?
if i am visiting a freind's place in neighbouring city and would like to store his gps co-ordinates in my contact list, how can i do that? this will help me if i am visiting same place next time. this would be helpful in many countries where location can not be found from zip / post code.
thanks

You could save the location in your favorites in google maps, but i don't know of a way to directly attach it to a contact.

gpstoday shows the actual street address for your location, and many among other options, allows you to attach the address to a contact or create a new contact with the current address.
"Single tap to create a new contact with your current location as the address, or save the current location as an existing contact's address. Imagine not having to type the full street address on the PPC keyboard!"

The only problem i see with that is this.....

I think it converts it to an address for storage.... and it sounds like there is no address.

I've never heard of a standard for it, but you could always simply store it as a note attached to the contact in the format of lat,lon
You can then just typically paste that into things, like Google Maps.
You can also record the spot and later put it into Google Earth or something, then save and load that KML file on the Tilt. If you 'launch' the KML file, all the points in it will show up in the Google Maps application.

Thanks for the replies...
currently i store lat/lon in "Office loc" field of address book of a contact and have to copy paste in google maps if i need to get location on maps.
i guess there is also not any easy way to get lat/lon in "google maps" of my current location / a point on the map. if i dont want to start any other app and need to get gps location from google maps then i need to follow steps below
1. on the map tap on desired location and select "Mark start point"
2. click on "Search" option and search for some poi
3. "Tap for options"
4. "Directions to here"
5. copy gps coords from the "Starting point" field.
is there any easier way than this?
thanks once again.

have you considered using trackme (found on xda).
Its great as it logs you journey which can be uploaded to google maps, google earth etc, its useful as you can take a foto and upload it along with your track. You can also view map/track on the app itself.
Check it out.
Also consider noni-plot gps, although no where near as useful as the above.
Happy playing

As for the guide, yes ive started writing GPS settings guide, as so many peeps ask about it. I think i may have chosen one of the hardest bloody subjects though as it really does depend on so many variables and that there is no right or wrongs!!! So unfortunately that doesnt make a very usefull guide, but i was going to list freeware/useful apps to it, so i guess it might not be that useless after all

+1 no one knows?
Hi,
I'd like to help but I'm not sure I'm getting the point...Among other cities you can add, My Location is a variable depending on where the phone is, right? If you are interested in one particular location that is not present in the weather cities database, it is possible to manually add it ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=519005), or it will simply reappear in your "MyLocation" enplacement when you physically get back there.

[REQ] Maps App

is there and app that can use google maps to show my location and get my coordinates and still be able to insert coordinates ...and other options like record tracks ...it would be very helpfull when going fishing thanks
Look for one of any Geocaching applications, tracking programs, etc.. You clearly haven't even looked in the Market yet.
Be aware that actively tracking takes a lot of battery. If you're just looking for "where did I start" you could launch it before you hit the dock, drop a waypoint, then when you're coming back in navigate back to that point. Even a "where is my car" app would work for that.
i searched everywhere the best i could find is mymapseditor
Google My Tracks combined with Gmaps and Google Map Editor. Awesome.

Look again. Like I said in the first post, any geocaching program will do it. You said "place a point on a map" and I assume you also want to navigate back to it, but regardless, ANY geocaching program will do that. Among many others, including "where is my car" type apps. And NO they do not require creating GPX.
Good grief.

[Q] Google maps - How to pinpoint, mark places, mark spots, mark locations?

i hope the administrator of this forum let post this thread, i ve seen many people wondering and asking so often about this topic, so thats why i decided to open this thread
.
Via Mobile: well, directly on your mobile, the only thing you can do is mark the location you want as "starred", just touch for 2 seconds on the spot or place you want to mark, it will load the address, when the address shows up, then tap on it, after that, look for a little "star" symbol located on the upper-right corner, tap it, and it will turn into yellow color (the bad thing about this is you cannot add a name or description for it)
.
Via computer: you can mark and save all the locations you want through google maps on your pc, just log in your google account, then go to google maps, look for the place you want to mark, when you find it, just click on "my maps", and after that, click on "create new map", when you click on "create new map", some buttons to mark that place will show up, choose the button with the "push pin" drawing, and get that "push pin" on the place you want, type the name of that place and a description, save it
after some seconds take your mobile, go to "maps", then go to "layers", now to "more layers", and finally click on "my maps", and viola, all the places you have marked via your computer will be there
on your pc also you can see the places you have marked as "starred" with your mobile in case you need them to mark them better with a "push pin" by using your pc

you will have to search for an adress, and when a marker on the map appears at this adress, tap the marker, then tap the icon in the right side that looks like a man in a suit. you will now enter Streetview at a point that is the nearest to the adress you entered
was searching everywhere for this, ud think google woulda made it more easier ot find
Great help.
That's what I was wondering about - how to add my own places on a map.
So the only way is to do it through a PC. Bleeeh...
Any one knows how we could mail to Google and ask them to add this feature into the mobile apps?
Do you know the service mail?
Thanks.

[Q] Is there any GPS software that can show satellite view maps offline?

I have tried searching but could not find a topic to match what I'm after.
Does anyone know of a way to get a satellite views with GPS support for use offline? Ideally I could do with GPX (routes/tracks) file support as well.
As far as I know google earth is only available for android and does not have offline cacheing - I would have to make my phone dual boot as well (I need windows for some things)
I have tried J2ME for google maps but cannot scroll and I don't think can use gpx routes.
To make it clear what I'd like is to view my current position on a satellite map with a route (gpx file) shown on there as well. I need to be able to do this without access to a phone network.
It's a shame I can't just run google earth from my HD2 since that's exactly what I'm after.
Hi mate,
how to run google earth without network access?? this wont work on your pc either.
but maybe this is helpful for you:
i recently discovered that google maps on winmo is capable to display .kmz/kml files. these are google earth exports with e.g. a track.
if you just need to display a small area, load the track in google maps. on next start up your last loaded "picture" is cached and therefore u dont need network access. otherwise if u want to navigate you should get something proper like tt or igo.
edit: this should be your match: http://www.gps-mate.de/de/produkte/GPS-Mate/beschreibung.php (using osm)
feel free to use the thankmeter

I have been trying open mobile maps but cannot find how to get satellite maps on there. I found a 1 year old thread on here about changing the maps.xml file and tried that but either doesn't work or I am missing something. There is an option at add maps with a URL but I don't know if this would work with google satellite maps and I can't find out what the url shoudl be.

NoniGPSPlot for "PocketPC" is running perfectly on my HD2 (and my old Trinity).
Tip: Don't remember to quit it when you don't need it anymore 'cause GPS uses lots of battery power. Tap on the main screen for a few seconds to get to the main menu.
I dont know what you are really searching for...
But I think best solution is navicomputer.com

Do you need a satellite view of the whole world?
Zoom to the interresting place an then adjust the slider how deep (that means how many zoom levels of) the images have to be downloaded.

I've been using NaviComputer 0.96 on my oversea trips. I would download maps (can be satellite maps too) before leaving, add POI and have no problem using if offline while on oversea trips. Best of all, it's free. It can do gpx tracks and log file too.

[GUIDE][11-10-12]GARMIN for Android![Lebanon map 1.5b][11/10/2012]

Thread available at rirozizo.blogspot.com
EDIT3: removed again
EDIT2: Check out "CoPilot GPS" - https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.alk.copilot.mapviewer this is free, official, and the lebanon map can be downloaded in-app, more reliable, and better than navitel (no ads, i'm just admitting that my work here is done)
EDIT: The map is BACK! since google maps is good enough, i re-released the map for free
NOTICE: i am trying to make this guide require free apps and not paid apps... i have found a way to get GPSMapEdit for free (officially), but unregistered, now there is only the android app that needs to be free not paid... please help me out to find another app than Navitel, that is free and reads those maps. thank you
Indexing maps with the newest version of Navitel have some problems... i index my maps with the old version
I do NOT support converting licensed maps. If you do, i am not responsible for anything that will happen to you (getting arrested, war, getting killed...) DO THIS AT YOUR OWN RISK when converting licensed maps.
Garmin NT maps can't be converted.
This guide is for making any map work on any android device available (and has GPS)
It's about converting the maps into a format that is compatible with an app on Android.
I)What You Need:
► PC
► Android phone
► GPSMapEdit (for PC)
► Navitel (for Phone)
► a map with any format
Click to collapse
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
NOTE: GPSMapEdit and Navitel are paid and NOT FREE!!
II)What To Do:
1► open GPSMapEdit on PC
2► drag and drop a map to the blank GPSMapEdit screen
3► select ALL the maps from the container to open, if your PC is slow, you'll have to wait a bit
4► when opened, click file, export, Navitel 3.2.6 map (*.nm2)
5► it will prepare itself, and start converting...
6► i have a 2.33GHz quad core CPU and 4GB RAM, and it took about 30 Mins to convert and export... please BE PATIENT!!! if you want to know that the program is not in the "not responding" state, open task manager-performance, and see that the CPU graphs are getting a little above 50%.
Click to collapse
PLEASE READ!!!
the conversion process most likely WILL FAIL!! with an error.
the error i got was:
Code:
WARNING: There are two nodes at the same position
this error can be fixed.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
III)How To Fix The Overlaying Errors:
1► when you get the above error, close the message box
2► Open tools, verify map...
3► deselect everything and only keep "Check routable polylines for self-intersections in nodes" and hit start
4► you'll see a list of the same errors that you saw in the exporting process, don't panic! just double click on one of them and the screen will move to its position.
5► locate the overlaying nodes,
5a► select them, right click and press "connect to nearest nodes"
5b► or, split the overlaying nodes, and delete all of them, but keep one (this is usually harder)
6► when you're done, and the list of errors is gone, export and finish.
Click to collapse
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
On Phone:
1► Download and install Navitel
2► Run it, and finish the setup (language, others....)
3► When done, don't do anything related to maps, but just close Navitel.
4► open a file browser, you'll see a folder called "NavitelContent"
5► Open it and go to the maps folder.
6► in the maps folder, put the exported .nm2 map in it.
7► relaunch Navitel
7a► open menu, settings, map, user maps, press the add button (the middle one), and choose /mnt/sdcard/NavitelContent/Maps/
7b► Navitel will index the newly created map, and when finished, it will show it to you.
Click to collapse
There you go Fully working maps, on android... i followed those very steps, and now i'm selling my map for 10$.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
TIPS:
1► On GPSMapEdit, it takes alot of time to repeat the connect to nearest nodes process for removing the errors.... one fast thing to do is first do it manually the first time, and then you can press F4 to repeat the process
2► usually, overlaying errors occure on roundabouts, and roundabouts have lots of nodes, the solution is in the list of errors. there's the coordinates for each overlay, you can follow these coordinates to specify the exact node.
3► if the "connect to nearest nodes" is grayed out, this means that there are two groups of nodes that are overlaying, split all the nodes and then reconnect them into one group, or do III) 5b
If you have an issue, please specify what map are you converting, and if it is free or paid/licensed

ONLY FOR LEBANESE PEOPLE Lebanon map v1.5 (v2 is coming in bug-free, when you guys test the v1.5 for me)
Or for the ones willing to go to lebanon...
I have officially converted a lebanon garmin map to android... Yes moderators and admins, this is not illegal as there is no map for lebanon, and i made it to garmin then converted it to android... It's all me...
The map is here: (as of v1.5b)
nm2 Format: REMOVED
nm3 Format: REMOVED
nm3 format is faster, it doesn't need indexing, so the app will launch faster, but if you still want to index the map yourself, i left the nm2 format for you, but i do not give support for it.
The map works on an app called Navitel (paid from market)... It has some bugs, but it'll have to do.
1► Download and install Navitel (remember, we are lebanese, we help each other)
2► Run it, and finish the setup (language, others....)
3► When done, don't do anything related to maps, but just close Navitel.
4► open a file browser, you'll see a folder called "NavitelContent"
5► Open it and go to the maps folder.
6► in the maps folder, put the .nm2 map file you just downloaded in it.
7► relaunch Navitel
7a► open menu, settings, map, user maps, press the add button (the middle one), and choose /mnt/sdcard/NavitelContent/Maps/
7b► Navitel will index the newly created map, and when finished, it will show it to you.

basically it makes the map smaller by splitting the map into 2 or more files... the data will still be there... nothing will be gone
