Which Android mobile? Switcching my X-10 - General Topics

Hello guys.
I was wondering which mobile i should select with android?
I'm planning to switch out my Xperia X-10, due to the lame software updates (only 1,6) When i bought it for 4 months ago, SE promissed a software update with 2.1 or 2.2 within 2-3 months. But still no sign of anything
I'm confused about selecting a HTC Desire, or a Samsung Galaxy S?
But i've read alot about many problems with the samsung mobile, so maybe the HTC is the best? HTC is very serious about software development, the Desire already got 2.2
Greetings M8's

Imagine that just when you get rid of the x10i they upgrade it
sent from my x10i that is banging for a 2.1 upgrade. ...

Desire I would choose as it´s HTC

I find it kind of odd, that in my homeland Taiwan, where the company HTC is; people there aren't exactly a huge fan of HTC products haha. Sorry off topic.

I Also think that the HTC would be the best choice.. seems like Samsung do have a lot of bugs in there phone.. but maybe it would be a good idea to wait, and see if SE are coming with that update before Christmas.. but will it then take about a half year before 2. 2 is released again?

If u want sth up-to-date sooner that anyone else, get a N1
U can run Desire rom on it as well
The poor build of Galaxy, no flash and its home launcher is a let down for me

Don't Blame S.E for this, you Knew it had 1.6 on it. Hate when People expect the update to come that fast, It takes time for this to happen....

HTC Desire or something newer's coming out?

Hi guys!I am the proud owner of a Touch Diamond and a Hero and an avid fan of HTC devices for almost 3 years now.As I am thinking of buying a new phone with Android (now that I have gothered some money ) I want to ask this.I like the Desire ALOT,but don't want to go through the same as with the Hero. When I bought the Hero on December,I saw much better devices coming out shortly, like the Nexus One,the Desire and the Legend and felt that my money could have bought me something by far better. So now should I buy the Desire or should I wait? Are there any plans for newer phones by HTC with better specs, like 1,5GHz processor, better screen etc?We all know that HTC gives newer phones more often than it gives newer software after all!
Thanks!

Yes, im also waiting for the HTC Vision - till now I just heard that its basicly a "HTC Desire" with a slide/hard keyboard - and perhaps a better Cam - but hard to say when it's coming cause there are just rumors about this device.
Well anyway if u like the desire and android - I'd say: get it - as there are always new devices coming out... You cant win the race.
I'm just waiting cause I hope for the hardware keyboard.
Had a wizzard once and miss it a bit since im on blackstone.
cheers
Well, such a device could have brightened my day if I lived in the US!
Unfortunately however I live in Europe,Greece to be more specific. Now,in the middle of the crisis I want to buy a 500-600 euros phone!
Anyway,I think that I will go with the Desire for now...But if there is anything coming to Europe like a european version of the Evo then yes,I will be happy!

Annoyed with HTC

Very p*ssed off with HTC
The Galaxy S original which is a 2 year old device is getting official ICS.
They weren't originally, but people begged Samsung and now they are getting it. This shows Samsung listens to customers.
They announced ICS for new devices 2 days ago, people complained, then today announce ICS for the original Galaxy S
Us? HTC announce the first waves many weeks ago. We pester HTC all the time but they never listen to us, no plans for the next wave yet.
Come on HTC! Desire S, HD and Incredible are all still new and capable!
I really hope they feel pressured by Samsung now and compete to release ICS for us.

+1 I like the great combination of hardware and software.
I don't mind if our ICS update will take a little longer, I know HTC will have to work to reskin the UI.
But at least let us know. It's been nearly 2 months now, and where is the 2nd wave of devices?

I never keep my electronic devices for more then a year (as I'm sure many here don't either) so I can't see it as a big deal.

Yeah, the DHD May be old..
But the Desire S and Incredible S certainly isn't!!
They were only released in April, 7-8 months old only! And they aren't getting updates?
I only included the DHD, as it has the same/similiar specs.
The new XL is getting ICS, but it has exactly the same hardware as the DHD, Desire S!! (Just a overclocked CPU)
Think about it, the Galaxy S, 2 YEARS OLD, is getting ICS!
And Desire S (7-8 MONTHS OLD) hasn't even been confirmed to get ICS yet!
Come on HTC!

I hate it when people say this
I am already rooted, and running a Sensation XL ROM sense 3.5.
I can easily choose and install A ICS ROM now. (In fact already tested it)
But its always better to get official support from HTC, so devs can work from our base, and we get a proper kernel source etc.

First I don't know from where you get that Samsung is updating the SGSI to ICS please give source.
All i know is that Samsung said that they'll update the Galaxy SII and the Note
will get ICS in Q1 where as the Galaxy R and galaxy Tabs(exclude the first gen) later and no mention what so ever about the Galaxy S!
Secondly HTC never said that they aren't updating the Desire S Incredible S (which are mid range devices) and Desire HD to ICS, they've said clearly that the phones presented on their release were the first bunch to get ICS, and of course the most recent phones would get ICS first, and HTC did a good job updating devices like the Desire HD, with 2 major updates : 2.2 to 2.3.3 and to 2.3.5 with sense 3.0!
Thirdly from what I've seen HTC is planing to update their devices to ICS before samsung does, the sensation is planed to get it ICS update on februrary where as the SGSII update planed for April.
http://www.engadget.com/2011/12/17/bell-mobility-hints-at-ice-cream-sandwich-release-dates-for-gala/
And fortly you'll get the ICS roms and HTC leaks in the XDA community before the OEMs release their official roms (requirements and approval process takes time) if you want ICS I'm sure you can already download beta ICS rom for your device

Hi,
I found this in the Galaxy S thread. People are talking about it
http://www.youmobile.org/blogs/entr...lans-for-GALAXY-line-Galaxy-S-to-follow-later
Actually looking back now, not too sure about its reliability.
Yes, Samsung originally announced ICS for the newer phnes 2 days ago.
Then customers complained. And 2 days later, Samsung listend and supposedly said a Galaxy S original update will be coming soon, but later.
I know Desire S etc are mid range phones - it is capable of ICS and only 8 months old.
As I have already said, there are betas for me, I've already tried them.
I won't be using the official ROM anyway, I just want htc to make the update.
As I said a few pages back, if htc make the update, our devs can tweak and base newer ROM versions on the new base and kernel, which is better than using a ROM port.

That source doesn't look reliable to me at all, I've checked all the well known sources, such as Androidcentral, engadget, theverge, andoirdpolice and of course our source n1 which is XDA and there are no mentions on the Samsung Galaxy S I
Don't take me wrong, I am 100% with you when you say that HTC needs to bring ICS to those devices if possible (rom limitations comes to mind) but I'm being more realistic, and I'm considering the whole picture, and it looks that HTC is doing pretty good compared to it competition in terms of updates but that's still not enough as a customer I ask for me, Also at the same time I would like to give a shout to google! to give OEMs release candidate OS to play with and prepare their update a periode of time before they them self start releasing the final product, so we don't see this fragmentation in terms of OS OEMs skinned versions comes at about same time, or relatively some weeks later after the release on Nexus devices and not months later

Well, just flash a custom rom will do. At least Sammy did much better than Motorola and LG in terms of updates though. Not to mention Sammy devices have an open bootloader, unlike HTC or moto phones.

Sure, hardware isn't as superior as Samsungs etc, but software is the key.
It's far superior than Samsungs touchwiz and other UI's.
Battery life on some htc's are rubbish, but on my Desire S its decent.
Also, rooting for me was easier than on my Galaxy Tab, and my dads SGSII.
I guess its all Down To personal opinions.

What the future holds for the Desire S

Hey everyone. So I would like to bring you some discussion here about on what the future holds for our HTC Desire S when it respects to the official HTC support.
The main question here is, what do you think that HTC will do with the Desire S? Will they bring ICS to it? Will they try to be soft and bring just Sense 3.5? Or is our Desire S done and no more updates will come? It would be quite interesting to see what everyone thinks that may happen in the next few months
i doubt very much we will see anymore major official updates ,just maye a few revisions.htc support there phones pretty badly tbh,and as much as i love my desire s and this community i doubt very much i would purchase another one of the htc phones as it will carry on the same legacy i expect .
I think HTC will do nothing. They can't support all the phones they released which is why they've decided to take it slow
Sent from my HTC Desire S using xda premium
I hope that HTC is still going to release an ICS update for Desire S, but that's probably false hope. HTC has released too many phones (about 5 different versions of the Sensation?) to provide support for every phone. They will just concentrate on the higher-end models, which unfortunately the Desire S isn't. Luckily there is a great community working hard to provide us with future updates
The current/typical market trend IS to take advantage of the thirst for the bleeding-edge OS and the cutting-edge hardware, and as businesses, they'd be mugs for not exploiting that. There is no way HTC had any serious plans for giving the Desire S official ICS ROM. However...
They (HTC) have gotten the balance wrong this year and they know it. Too much quantity, not enough quality. Sooner or later, even the rich kids will get fed up of being 'expected' to upgrade a handset every 8 months to stay 'on trend'.
At least HTC seem to have taken note of this...
http://www.engadget.com/2012/01/26/htcs-uk-ceo-wants-to-ease-off-the-new-product-gas-focus-on-am/
Don't forget the original Desire did eventually (through popular demand) get an official gingerbread update, just that HTC never designed the phone's hardware to cope with the increased size of the OS over Froyo. So disclaimers were required should we then complain that there were only enough room for 10 apps once 2.3.3 was installed!
But on the flip-side this is why you chose Android. This is why you chose XDA. You want something that comes out of the box, and gives you the opportunity to improve it in your own way, to your own liking. To take the initiative. We almost need HTC to drop the ball so we can pick it up and run with it.
The day a stock Android phone comes out of the box perfect to everyone's needs for years after its purchase will be a sad day for XDA.

Fair enough, I would have believed HTC if they released a official statement about Desire S not meeting hardware requirements.
However, hearing that the Sensation XL is receiving ICS really got me annoyed. It proves the hardware is capable.
The XL is almost identical to us, apart from the OC'ed chip, and thats getting ICS.
I don't see why we can't get the upgrade.
Where is HTC's announcement of the second wave of devices that are getting ICS too? We are still yet to hear from them.

Sorry, i wasn't suggesting that the desire s couldn't cope. I'm pretty sure it could. Just saying that in my opinion it's unlikely HTC will be in a hurry to stop us buying more handsets, and it will be good to see what the devs here manage to port for us.
This week a friend asked me what he should upgrade to this march. He has an old desire, and isn't a heavy user. Not interested in dual cores or massive screens. I looked at all the options and it was still the desire s or the Xperia Ray.
The only reason i recommended the xperia ray was because he HAS to have a Vodafone upgrade. Vodafone's stock ROM on the desire s has that ludicrous 'pocket mode' forced on, and you can't turn it off. 8 hours battery life max. My dad ended up sending his back for that reason. He wouldn't let me root it!

HTC has done many contradictions in the past and sometimes they had to go back in what they said.
First when the Sensation came out people asked if Sense 3.0 would come to older devices then HTC quickly stated that older devices could not run it due to hardware restrictions. Then they released the HTC Rhyme with !GHz CPU and 768MB of RAM running even newer version Sense 3.5. So HTC gave us Sense 3.0 as it was evident that it could run it.
After that we had the Desire 2.3 update. HTC telling people the phone didn't have enough memory for Gingerbread and they had just released the Wildfire S with even worse hardware running Gingerbread from start. So HTC gave people with Desire the 2.3 update.
Then now with ICS. It is obvious that the Desire S can run it (Nexus S...) but with Sense over it and HTC's hesitations over support may lead to no update.
My theory is that when a phone is released it has to be updated to at least one version of Android. The Desire S came out with 2.3 from start so we can believe that it will come to ICS. We will get the answer when HTC reveals the second wave of updates to us.

Very good explanation!
I really do hope that's the case!
I think the DHD is a lucky device... It started with 2.2, got 2.3.3 + New sense 2.1, then another update to 2.3.5 + sense 3.0. If we get ICS, the DHD will have to get ICS (same specs). I don't think HTC want to give the dhd anymore updates
So HTC might choose not to give us ICS for that reason otherwise they would also have to update the DHD.

I may be wrong, but my feeling is that all devices from Desire HD and Desire Z and later will receive the update. The Desire HD was the top phone for HTC of it's time and I don't think HTC will kill it if they decide to give Desire S the update.
The only question here is the all mighty Sense UI and that is HTC's fault because they built a so deeply integrated UI. Honestly I can live without the 3D transitions as ICS actually has its own ones. It will up to what HTC will do with Sense UI.
Dont know about you guys but HTC has always been keep-the-customer-in-dark with Desire S. IMHO I dont know why they do it... I mean it came with sense 2.1 and 2.3 when I bought. After a while some patches and fotas were there but when we got sense 3.0 it was some guys phone which got updated made the news not a disclosure or say news by HTC that its been updated and which makes my geeky mind cheer in the doubt of my mind that we may recieve ICS officially
Now about the thing that here are devs that are doing a hard job to get ICS on ours and imo they have been succesful as in there-was-no-way-but-they-did-it successful. But think if theres an official update what might happen then? I am no dev or **** but as I understand that would made works on other roms ports a heck lot easier...

This is pretty sad, if HTC won't upgrade our Desire S to ICS. I mean, Sony Ericsson has announced and committed to ICS upgrades for their 2011 lineup--and those have the same chipsets as our Desire S! SE's flagship for last year, the Xperia Arc, was launched around the same time frame as our Desire S, with virtually the same Qualcomm chipset. No way HTC can use that excuse, and they know it.
18 months is not yet up for this phone, so if Google is right, we should expect support/updates till around September or so of 2012. As much as I dislike Sense, HTC ought to be ashamed of itself if they won't give us ICS. I can imagine they're in a bind, because they are compelled to give us ICS, but don't want us playing around with the ICS'ed Sense 4.0 and would rather have us get newer, more expensive 4 inch slabs
Come on, HTC. Gain some goodwill among us. Roll out ICS and the latest Sense. You know it makes Sense

That's the way to go, but just as always magic will not happen and HTC Desire S probably will not get ICS update because of that politic, meanwhile Sony Ericsson goes more democratical way and releases updates for customers, not only "top list'' customers as HTC do. I respect HTC, but the point how they sorts updates by devices is to drastic, just too painful for user like us, who knows what their device is able to do, but they simply do not feed it. To be honest, if HTC Desire S will get official ICS update, then it will mean that HTC is changing their political statement and magic is happening.

Well good news anyway:
HTC announced ICS officially for us!
YIPPEE!!!

Desire C Sense 4 outrage!

[Rant]
This news is ridiculous!

I bought my sensation XE in December as I was told that it would be one of the first HTC handsets to get ICS, then earlier this year we were told we can't have sense 4 as our sensations cant handle it, now today they release this sack of **** on facebook! 600mhz processor! The same as last years unfulfilling HTC Explorer running Sense 4!
This is the last time I buy HTC, any thoughts anyone? Who is with me, and who is willing to just roll on their backs and wait for HTC's next disappointing release?
[/Rant]
is the same
i think is going to be same for all android devices...is like galaxy SII wont get S3 new features too....
totally ****
Now now, settle down.
Having tried a few of the sense 4 ROM's available, I'm more than happy with the tried and tested 3.6.
As a self confessed flashaholic, I agree that another update would be cool but seriously, is there anything wrong with your current software?
I have a feeling it's a very watered down version of Sense 4 probably just has the Lock Screen, Social Integration and a few other things.
IMO, I still do think we will get Sense 4 sometime this year if previous HTC phones are anything to judge by.
Also, HTC only promised ICS and we got it quite promptly albeit with Sense 3.6.
I'll probably still be open to buying HTC devices so long as the hardware is good and I can root it and flash a custom ROM.

I'm with you we don't need HTC we got the best devs out there I been on sense 4.0 for so long you guys worry about them releasing it LOL its already out
Nothing wronge with 3.6 but if you want 4.0 go get it if 4.5 comes the devs will get that too untill this phone is dead

Exactly. The Sensation is awesome anyway and with the work that all our excellent developers put in, it just makes it even better.
Raging for what? Just calm down and get your facts right.
This is how marketing works. Every smartphone maker does this thing with their software, thats how they actually live, buying their products every year, or maximum 2. You get a phone that lasts 1-2 years in software date terms. Thats why u got android, to count on developers not OEM's.

What is this? A girl waiting for her mommy to get candy? ? Go buy yourself one if u cant wait.
GROW UP PEOPLE.

htc not realesing anymore updates for the one S [S4]

Hi there !
I have an EURO S4 htc one S and since there are 2 version of this phone ( the S4 cpu and the S3 cpu ) I'm starting to be a little concerned about updates as it's been a while since the last one.
Actually I'm still on 1.78 because 1.84 cames out just for the US t-mobile version and there are a list of bug that I would like to see fixed from htc.
1) meteo app and meteo widget works bad ( lag, crash ecc )
2) 3G isn't working sometimes even if the phone show the signal ( problem from early days )
3) Browser performance are not that great expecially now that I have some apps installed
4) live meteo background isn't working
5) also with 1.78 quadrant show a worst benchmarsk result of about 700 points!!
6) sense crash sometimes
So there are a lot of things to be fixed here and there, and as I have paid this phone a lot of money I would like to receive a decent support!!
yes, the update speed is slow like hell with only S4 and don't mention there is one more S3 now, the speed will be even slower. I think they only spend time on One X/AT&T and leave us behind.

Wait the TMo One S is in a different update channel so it may recieve different updates to the Euro/WWE One S. It's a "flagship" device so it should get updates (including Jelly Bean)
First of all they should end with all that silly "sense" stuff and also messing with android itself. I also have Nexus S and despite the fact that it's quite old device and dosn't run so smooth anymore, I have no problems. And I guess that this is because it uses vanilla android, not some screwed up stuff from HTC or Samsung.
HTC makes great phones in terms of hardware, but they should abondon their crapware or deliver it as an addition to android, not replacement of it's essential parts.
This is my personal view, I never liked Sense (it made sense for Windows Mobile) but i like HTC phones.
Matter of opinion I love sense over vanilla

completly disagree, I buy HTC because I want sense, I don't like android basic at all. They just need to speed up the software development department..
I LOVE HTC design & Hardware that's why I bought an HTC but I HATE sense (it has some good things though, but I think its overweight is not worth it) maybe they could allow more customization and allow download/enable only the things you like...
Back to the topic I don't think S4 version will be forgetted, S3 will only ship to some zones, but worldwide both versions will be present.
Sadly One S will not be as supported as One X, but it still will be supported quite a bit (and after we will still have custom ROMS )

The problem with custom Roms is that with 2 versions of the one S ( s4 and s3 ) the diffusion of the device will be not uniform and we will have less development that own a specific version. Also custom ROMs need fresh drivers!!!

I really doubt that will be less development, just give it a while for devs to get s3 roms running.
Anything is better than the what the amaze dev section has.

If you check the Touch Button Issue thread (GSM 900/1800MHz) countries are affected only, no relevance to US) you will see various HTC statements that they work on a fix for that issue rolling out soon.
The quality of the statements rather sound like "Update" to me not fix. So it might mean a new RUU and include more fixes? *hope dies last*

I don't think we need to worry about updated for our phones. HTC is the best OEM as pushing out updates. According to Google, handset makers have had their hands on Jelly Bean code for a while now. My guess is that HTC is already working on the Android 4.1 update and will try to get that out as soon as possible.
HTC may also push out a few smaller updated between now and then to resolve some of the issues that have been pointed out. The HTC one S is a flagship device. Support for the phone will not dwindle until HTC pushed out a newer handset.

And a lot of the time, its T-Mobile who holds out on the update while they "double check" everything.
I know on the amaze we had a leaked Rom that was exactly the same as the ota almost a month before the official ota was put put by T-Mobile.

No... this is not possible...
I will wait one more month than I will come back with SAMSUNG!
More update, crash fix, NO S-OFF, more ROM...
The ONE S is an EXCELENT smartphone, I love it, but HTC release bug fix in too much time!!!!!
Take a look to SAMSUNG... why success?
Because SAMSUNG listen the users!
Since now for the GS3 there was released about 3 update to fix all the remaining bugs!
I love my HTC ONE S but the WEB BROWSER SUCK! The Gallery SUCK! The TREE DOT MENU' SUCK (sometime are nice but most of the time are unnecessary)...

It's pretty simple, too...don't like Sense? So flash one of the many non-Sense ROMs (pun not intended)---CM9, for one...If you don't want to have to flash and you hate Sense, well THEN you probably bought the wrong phone.
As an aside, my brother got T-MO US to give him a FREE SGSIII yesterday with his 2 year upgrade (he only qualified for partial upgrade at the time). THAT is why I love T-Mobile...customer service can be very helpful and nice sometimes.
We got XDA....we fix our own bugs...HAHAHA
