I've narrowed it down to two phones that are within my budget,
The HTC Hero which I was planning to get for 160 pounds (refurbished) from the three store and getting them to unlock it and;
The Acer Liquid which I can get for 211 pounds from TotalPda.
Specs wise, I really like the liquid. In fact, the only thing that's stopping me from getting it is the fact that it's an Acer product and I'm worried about it breaking or dying after a few months. I require a phone that will last a while (atleast six months, i guess). If possible i'd like to hear from some of you folks who've had the phone for a while, and what your opinion is of it. I want to pick a phone up while I'm still in the UK as these same phones would be much more expensive back home. Another reason why I require a phone that will probably last a while, as sending it back is not going to be an option.
I'm coming from a 'dumb' phone and when I think about it, i probably don't really require a smartphone. But I love gadgets, and android seems amazing. Most I forsee myself using the phone for is making calls, sending texts, light browsing (no data plan, so just wifi) and reading comics if that's possible.
So what do you guys reckon, now that the Liquid's been out for a while would you recommend it? Is it worth the extra dough? Is it going to turn into a paper weight with a single drop (as I've been hearing)? Should I just take the safe route and go for the Hero?
Welcome to forums
As for personal experience I would choose an HTC device
And continuing the trend orb3000 started.. I'd recommend the HTC Desire out of personal experience.. Just because it is the best Android device to date.. at least in Europe Or you can wait till October or so till the Desire HD comes out.. though dont mark my word there.. as it is only a rumour as to when it is coming out..
HTC Desire is about twice as expensive as his current budget.
It is indeed but i think it is a very good phone to keep for a long period as he wants.. but if you think that his budget is close to the prices he mentioned then yes.. i suppose it is a no-go for him :/
anyway.. if you really want a good phone to keep for at least 2 years, the HTC Desire is a very solid choice in my opinion
Or you can check out the HTC Wildfire.. which costs far less than the Desire and it is pretty good despite the inferior CPU..

Get the Hero, 160 is a good deal from store. My android life also started with Hero
Dont know how much they cost you to unlock it, but u can purchase an unlock code from ebay for about 7 quid

So i think i wana get the hd2 but im not so sure yet. currently i have a htc fuze and i am thinking of selling it and getting the hd2. but what do you guys think? is it worth the 150 to upgrade with tmobile? i have tmobile currently and i have an upgrade. so the phone would only be 150. but i was wondering if its a good phone and if its even worth upgrading at the moment
thanks
compare and evaluate
Have you looked at and held the HD2 at a store yet? I recommend that you experiment with it if there is a T-mobile store near your residence or work place. I also recommend that you do an online search and read every review and as much about the HD2 features as you can before making your decision.
The HD2 has a 1 GHz processor, an enlarged capacitive touch screen, and a 5 mp camera. As far as user interface, depending on which rom you are using on your Touch Pro, you might not notice much difference. However, the Touch Pro has a slide-out QWERTY keyboard and the HD2 relies soly on a virtual keyboard.
A lot depends on what is important to you. Do you want or need a better camera, faster speed and larger screen? Will you miss the slide out keyboard? If you answered "yes" to the first question and "no" to the second, then the HD2 might be for you.
You'll also need to consider how contented you are with your T-Mobile service. If you are happy where you are and don't mind signing another 2-year (or whatever you are being offered) contract to get the HD2 at your upgrade price of $150, then it sounds like a good deal. You could easily sell your used Touch Pro on eBay for $100 to $150 (if it is still in good condition) further reducing your overall output for the HD2. Alternatively, you might just want to keep your Touch Pro as a back-up device.
Ultimately, this is a personal choice that only you can make.
Poster above is right, only you can make the choice, i miss the Phisical keyboard on the HD" (Luckily, i also have a TP2 ) i cant think ot aswome a HD2 with a 1GB rom is. make thw right coise FOR YOU!
Good luck
yes ive held the phone before and pplayed with it. my uncles has one and i fell in love. so i think i made my decision.. im going to sell my tp and get the hd2! yay

Sorry to resurrect a dead thread but...
I am looking at upgrading my contract early and can get an HD2 for $35 after $50 mail-in rebate. My question is ... Is this a phone that will still be a good phone in 2 years? Or should I save the money and drop $200 on a Sensation after the $50 mail in rebate? I like either phone and to be honest I will be installing a sense 3.0 ROM on the HD2 if I get it. Is the dual core going to be that much faster than the single core that it would make the phone lag real bad?
Thanks for the help.

Installing a Sense 3.0 rom on a phone that didn't originally ship with it will make a difference in performance. Sense 3.0 roms are generally pretty large. I'm not really familiar with the HD2, but I know that Sense 3.0 roms on the Evo leave very little internal memory. It's best to have a partitioned SD card if you want to install very many apps. Again, I'm not familiar with the internal storage on an HD2, but it's something to keep in mind.
If you're planning to keep the phone for two years, I think it's best to go ahead and spend the extra money on the Sensation. Since it comes stock with Sense 3.0, those roms will be much more stable. Some people downplay the difference between newer dual core phones and older phones, but I feel that the difference would be worth the price. I haven't upgraded my Evo, but I stick with AOSP and never run anything heavy. I'm not due for a full upgrade, so I'd rather hold out.

Hi,
I am new to this forum.
I have joined because I have many questions to ask haha.
I'm currently looking to buy a new cellphone.
Right now I am looking at the HTC Hero or the Moto Backflip, but I am also open to suggestions.
What I'm looking for is a solid phone that would last me a good 2-3 years, with a touchscreen and wifi are musts.
I have heard that Android is probably the best OS out there, so i would highly prefer it.
A qwerty keyboard would be nice since i like to use MSN on it. However, it's not a must have.
What i usually do on the phone is just browsing some web pages, youtube, msn, and facebook using wifi.
I do not want a data plan that is why I am looking to buy the phone unlocked on ebay.
My maximum budget is 400 dollars.
Now my question is,
I heard that the hero is a great cellphone, and I am willing to pay an extra 100$ over the backflip's price to get it if it is indeed a great phone.
Would you guys suggest me get the hero? or to get the backflip that has a qwerty keyboard? I have heard that the backflip will have android 2.1 on it, is the update out already??
Or if you guys can suggest another good phone that would be great too!
The price on ebay:
$400 for hero
$300 for Backflip
Please give me some suggestions!
I have read in another thread someone said the Hero is outdated already???
Hasn't it only been out for about half a year only?
If it is outdated, what phone should I go for that is within my price range??
thanks
Hero 100%. Better design, HTC, support, not crippled, gorgeous looking, the list goes on. The backflip has no support from here, and personally I think it's basically the GSM version of the devour. Ugly, boring, no support, and you never see em'
Please get neither if you are willing to spend 400. Both phones are a bit outdated and will have a hard time holding up 2-3 years. Get a nexus one or a Droid (milestone ) for that price

Thanks for your opinion!
I found that the milestone might be a good option since it's within my price range and has a physicial keyboard.
The $600 nexus ones on ebay are a bit beyond what I am willing to spend haha.
So will the Motorola Milestone be the best choice if I have $400?
How's the processor??
Motorola Milestone is an ok choice, but you should try it out first. I would rather stay with HTC devices.
What HTC device would you recommend me to get then ?
Hey, so I'm looking into buying a new phone and the now I'm down to the hero and the backflip. I have never had an android phone before so the phone I decide on can't be too complicated. I'm 14 and I text a lot so the phone has to be able to type easily and fast. Please give me advice if you have experience with one or both of these phones.
Is there any other advices?
I am buying my new handset soon!
+1 for the n1 as already suggested above. You can also look at the HTC Aria or Samsung Captivate.
Unfortunately the Nexus one and the other ones you suggested are somewhat beyond my price range $400 is really my maximum. Unless I can get a used one somewhere ...
As it is one of your original options, I will give my opinion on it : The hTC Hero
Had one of these for a while (by my standards) for now, and its a pretty solid device. Okay, it isn't the fastest processor, and it has likely recieved its last official rom, but i love it
Have just got Éclair running on it, and there are noticeable differences since android 1.5, although no live wallpapers (not that i see this as much of a loss, as I don't tend to just sit and stare at my home screen, i try to use the phone)
There are plenty of apps for it, plenty of custom roms, and a sizeable (albeit not the biggest) user base on xda.
The build quality is pretty decent - it has withstanded my daughter standing, jumping, chewing, and dribbling all over it, so it has passed that test for me.
In my opinion, the downside is the camera - there is no flash. But even then, it is not the worst camera I have had on a phone.
Hope that helps
If you are on ATT and you have $400 you should go with the HTC Aria you can get it off contract for $350. Even though its only a mid level phone it is a much better and newer phone then the Hero and the Backflip.

My Contract with AT&T ended on the 14th. They will upgrade me to the Inpsire for 69 bones with another 2 yr Commitment. I looked and the only other phones they have right now that I am interested in are the Atrix @ 199 and the Iphone 4 @ 99 for a refurb...
I have scoured these forums for the choices I have, and Inspire seems like the best. With that said tho, should I wait? Is there anything worthy coming out that I am missing? I do not see anything anywhere slated, but Two years is a long time and I will be stuck with my choice. Would make me a sad Panda if something great comes out in two months that I could have waited on.
I Just want to make the best decision, I am upgrading from a iphone 3g. ..Like I said, two years is a long time...
There won't be anything of interest for at least a couple months, likely longer. As for being stuck with your choice you can always sell your inspire and buy a different phone later on. The only other thing I would consider is holding onto your upgrade (maybe for iPhone5 to resell when it comes out) and just buying the inspire on here from someone with one for sale. Probably be about 340 for one.

In my opinion, it's taking AT&T this long to offer a brilliant phone like the Inspire 4G. You may be waiting a long time till something better comes out. And the Atrix is a joke. I don't think you'll be disappointed.
There's just so much choice as far as customization goes and with the right set up...an Inspire 4G is as fast as any dual core processor out there.
But it also depends on your personal choice. If a Front Facing Camera is important to you. Then the Inspire isn't for you.
mmmm *hugs my inspire* I am glad I bought you out of contract.
I was in the "should've waited two more months to use my upgrade" situation, myself, with the captivate->inspire, so I understand your concern.
However, spending an upgrade on an inspire is a lot less likely to give you "used my upgrade remorse" than if you had done it with a captivate, only to have the inspire come out a couple months later.
This is a solid phone that will make you wonder how you managed to get it for that low of a price.
And that's coming from someone who paid full, Off-contract price, even.
Inevitably, though, a new phone will come out. You may want to consider, as mentioned, grabbing one Off-contract, and save your upgrade for when the new phone does come out.
(By the time that happens, I'll personally be up for another upgrade, and I know I will be much more discriminating in how I choose to spend it, this time around.)

Hmmm, Thanks guys. I just looked at ebay and I can get 200 - 250 for my 3g unlocked. It broke 2 months ago and Apple gave me new one so this one is in perfect shape. Looks like I can get an inspire out of contract for 300-350 bones. That might just be the best solution for me.
Maybe i should go in and try it out for 25 days or so and ensure I like it. I need it to mostly stream Sirius XM at work. But as my 3g does that I am sure this will have no issues.
I was without a contract for a good long while, so I replaced my Tilt with an Inspire. Now that there is a model of the Evo with a REAL keyboard, I'm starting to wish I had waited longer, for the possibility of an Inspire with a REAL keyboard.
I get REALLY REALLY tired of having to retype everything 2-3 times on the fake keyboard phones.
I am happy with the on screen keyboards. But I don't use my phone for texting. Sometimes I'll reply to the wife. Most times I don't even do that. Lol
I need/want Siruis XM and a Book reader. Truthfully I could prolly just stay on my 3g. Its slow, but both of those things work perfectly. Stanza Reader is amazing.......I would just like a new shiney.
I had a tilt, I loved it, flashed a rom every other day and then made my own. Which is another reason I am looking at this phone. I was completely addicted to customizing when I could.
I have an Evo and the Inspire is basically an Evo with better specs, so yes definitely take the Inspire. DO NOT TAKE THE ATRIX. You can't do much with it in terms of rooting, etc. The whole phone screams GIMMICK. Either get the Inspire, or:
1. Get iPhone 4
2. Sell iPhone 4 for $400-$500
3. Get Inspire 4G
4. ???
5. PROFIT!
Ha, that buying reselling thing aint my bag.
Go for the inspire. I compare it with my mom iphone and my phone KILLS it. Once it gets the speed it deserves you wrong be disappointed

Thanks for the feedback! I'm in the same situation (have a 3GS and currently out of contract). Actually had a Captivate for a week when they first released and took it back due to all the issues. I think I'll actually grab the Inspire now.
Yeah thanks peeps. I have been inspired to leave apple. I'll try it for 25 days and if I like I will keep.
Hard not to just get the iphone4 for 99 bux tho.......

I work for an AT&T Dealer ... I strongly discourage you from buying anything refurb from AT&T/Apple.
You will do much better scouring your local craigslist for a gently used iPhone 4 and buying a $2.00 microSIM adapter off amazon then doing your upgrade to the inspire and enjoying the freedom to come and go as you please from the confines of the apple OS.
I might also suggest you research the Samsung Captivate. Lots of outlets have it on clearance right now for as little as $.01. You will find much more customization options for it and better battery life.
Then again, love my Inspire ... thats why I have two phones, one for work and one for play.
Good luck!
Not sure I feel ya on that referb stuff man. I bought my current Iphone from ATT referbished they replaced it a year and 7 months after when I dropped it and broke it... For free. Not underwarranty, had no insurance...They just hooked me up.
A phone is nothing but a toy for me. Spending money on a used Iphone and then also on an inspire is out. That is just to much money on somethin I use to read books and listen to stern at work on. I think getting the inspire and still having my 3g will be plenty. If after 25 days I still use my 3g more, well, then I'll take the inspire back and get the iphone 4. ../Shrug.
I've had a HTC Tilt 2 for the last year and its starting to get less desirable than it used to when i got it. I love the phone is just that it is now to the point that i have to push the reset button at least 3 times a day...minimum. used to have to hit maybe once a week. it also sucks that there is a minimal amount of decent apps for it. so I can decide if i want to upgrade to the Inspire or the Iphone 3gs(can't afford an Iphone 4). My only big problem with either is that neither has a slide out keyboard like my Tilt does which i love because I can poke out messages real well on the virtual...i would probably get better if i was forced to though and that the battery life is kind of crappy on the Inspire. Can anybody out there help me out? Let me know if yall need more information from me to help any.
Battery life is manageable if you intend to MOD your Inspire. Stock ROM battery life is poor, trade off for the screen size.
If price is really an issue, look for a Captivate. Some retailers offer it for free and it is a BLAST once it is flashed (so is the Inspire).
Whatever you choose though, I can only advise you avoid the 3GS and don't fall into the trap of purchasing the LG Quantum or Moto Flipout just because they have real keyboards. You will just be SAD and BORED.
The iPhone is so last week ...
Just traded my Tilt2 in for the Inspire, and I love it. I too loved my keyboard and thought I would miss it but I don't. Yeah the battery is just okay but my Tilt wasn't any better and if you wark like I do I always have a USB close. I also ordered an extra battery, like I do for all my phones. Go for it, you won't be sorry and around here, it's 99 bucks.
I came from a T2 as well and haven't looked back. I don miss the keyboard at all. If anything I can type faster with the Inspire. In landscape the keys are much bigger & if you don't like the stock one there are dozens more to try in the market.
The community is much better here too. Dev's respond frequently to questions in general as well as Rom topics and there is a much better sense of humor around here.
Take the plunge. You won't look back either. After a day or 2 when you finally put the T2 in a drawer it will feel tiny.

Year ago I went from the Tilt2 to Captivate. Night and Day Difference in Operating systems. I had stuck with WM even coming from the days of IpaQ's. I sold the Captivate which you can one on Craigslist and Bought the Inspire. I really enjoyed the Captivate but The Inspire is a solid device. You will not go wrong with either choice. Do not get caught up in the subsidized price search around and you will find good deals on devices.
I switched too.
I went from the Tilt2 to the Inspire also, and I LOVE it I was a die hard windows guy, but microsoft lost me with mobile ver7. if you really want a T2 i still have my old one with extended battery and already hard spl'd
Once you get used to not using a stylus it's not that hard, i did find it is easier if i calibrate the keyboard after i flash a new rom, might just be a mental thing
Just say no to apple!! get the Inspire!!
God there's a lot of tilt 2 users in this forum. As for me i will buying the inspire near the summer. I still have hopes in the XDANDROID project, hopefully we'll have BT working.
the only reason i am slightly worried about price is because i am in a two year contract with ATT and i am to the point that i can stand the locking up anymore and I'm willing to pay 115 bucks to get out. as far as changing the roms on the Inspire are they easy to change? only im i changed the rom on my T2 was because that new stock rom with sense came out and i had been wanting to get it. on the inspire is there away to get a lot of the apps on the store for free?
i have noticed that amazon wireless has the inspire for like 70 bucks but i have to be ready for an upgrade. i wonder if i call att and pay them the money to end my contract if i will in turn be able to go straight to amazon wireless and buy the phone? what do yall think?
I've heard of some long time at&t customers calling customer service and getting an upgrade early, especially if the topic of switching carriers comes up. I recall this being brought up here in Inspire General, do some searching.
As far as switching roms goes, it couldn't be easier. If you backup your apps with google using a gmail account & and your contacts using the multitude of options available everything but your widgets, home screen layout and side loaded apps gets restored very shortly after 1st boot.
This process makes windows mobile look like a joke. No need for scrips like UC to get everything back the way it was.
I upgraded from Tilt2 mid February.while still half way through my contract. Called & asked how much was my early termination fee coz i was thinking of switching to Verizon (been with ATT for 4+ yrs). They asked why and told them I was looking at iPhone 4 or Thunderbolt. Also told them I was interested with inspire only if i could get an early upgrade. They said ok for 199. I told them I saw an upgrade offer for $69 @ Walmart.com & radioshack. I think I saw it somewhere recently for 49 bucks.
Long story short, they honored the price & I got the phone in 2 days with an early term fee of 350 if i cancelled within 2 yrs. Unlimited plan grandfathered.
Maybe I shudda waited for the Thunderbolt or Sensation from T-MO but I'm happy with this phone even without the front facing cam for now.
Still enjoying stock ROM.
Never had any problems with the Tilt2 with energy ROM. I stuck with the version shown below my signature. Didn't flash to any updated versions as it was stable for my usage.
The only thing I miss is outlook task syncing. Calendar is ok but i dont get appointment & tasks notifications anymore. Something I should research when i get a chance.
Hope that helps.
Sorry for the long response.

Absolutely I plan on getting it, the Sensation will be the LAST non stock (Sense, Touchwiz, Crap In A Bucket, etc.) Android phone I ever buy. Hopefully it comes to Tmobile soon, since I cant stand dealing with the Sensation (on my third now) any longer.
Galaxy Nexus looks delicious. But if I actually changed phones every time I wanted to, my wife would have my head. Especially since I'm the one who pried her away from her silly iPhone world to go Android.
Definitely keeping an eye on this device though.
No plans yet, but will keep an eye on reviews ...
The way it's looking right now, I'll be leaving T-Mobile for Verizon and getting the Nexus Prime. It's been over 2 months since the data speeds in my area have dropped to EDGE. T-Mobile stated that they need to replace the T1 cables, and that there is no ETA on the completion of this work. It seems that T-Mobile's quality of service has taken a dive over the past few months, so I'd rather pay a few bucks more and actually get what I pay for.
The Sensation has been a great phone. It's the service that's lacking. At least I'll be able to cover the ETF by selling the Sensation.
nice! so many complainers btw.
Only thing that sucks is that 299 price tag. Apparently there are two models the Samsung Galaxy Nexus (Verizon Exclusive) and then there is the Samsung Nexus Prime that will be coming to t-mobile, sprint, at&t. Why wouldnt the Nexus, of all phones NOT come to tmobile since they debuted Android and carried the Nexus one and Nexus S? I'm assuming t-mobile won't be selling the device directly but we should be able to use a upgrade you have through t-mobile to get the device on contract correct? this is the first time i'm gonna attempt to get a nexus phone.

With 32 GB's of storage, i highly doubt there will be a SDslot. But the only thing i'm actually concerned about with this phone is porting roms to the device. With a resolution its supposed to come with, we wont be seeing MIUI for a while. also i never see it but hell even porting the ice cream sandwich version of HTC sense. as much as i don't like it, i do like flashing to get a different feel from AOSP for a while. Anyone concerned about that?
Ive thought long and hard about this phone...I was all ready to sell the sensation and go for the Prime but....
1-Once that thing is out, the sensation value is going to plummet.
2-Id have to buy it outright since I used my upgrade for the sensation. (Made worse by 1, above)
3-Once I go through all the trouble of getting it, a whole new species of phone will likely be on its way (not just a memory upgrade, but a whole new tech worth having, like some crazy quadcore phone or something).
4-Once ICS is out, the sensation will likely show its true inner beast and thus still be a contender with the Prime.
If I am going to spend big $$$ to get a phone, it better be revolutionary! If I find that the sensation only falls a short distance behind the Prime once the sensation is "fixed", then I would be pissed.
Id rather "suffer" with a fully optimized sensation and wait for next upgrade's SOB phone.

They are announcing the device tomorrow night. I'll be watching and thats when ill make my final decision on selling my sensation. I've never had a nexus device so i really want to try one, and i don't think this phone will disappoint since i know they want to try and fix their mistake they have with that fail Nexus S. im actually concerned now about the price. If its SUBSIDIZED at 299 for Verizon, and there is no guarantee that it will be subsidized for other carriers (if it even comes to other carriers) what will the price be. I'm not going to get it if i'm forced to pay full retail price which i know will be expensive, i have a upgrade which i'd like to use to get the device.
Now, what does this have to do with the sensation?
