This topic has clues for replacing the screen. I have not concluded an manual for chancing it yet but reading this whole topic gives you the big picture how it is done. Questions are always welcome and I try to answer them with my knowledge. This 1st post gives you 2 links to follow for pics about changing screen and my own starting point for chancing my own screen.
Has anyone bought and installed a digitizer+screen set which is on sale at ebay? I could not post direct link to ebay because I'm a newbie on these forums. You can find the product searching ebay with these keywords "I9000 digitizer". My galaxy's screen cracked and I need an replacement. Both screen and glass broke. I think that this set includes them both. There is also told in the questions that the set infact includes amoled display and not LCD as the title says.
Second question is that does someone have an service manual somewhere. Would be nice to know how to break apart my phone when replacing screen.
Third question is that doesn't samsung vibrant and galaxy s share the same chassis but different screen with more capacitive buttons. Could it be possible to install vibrant's screen to galaxy s?
PS. The way my galaxy brokedown is very funny. I lay down my phone on the kitchen table and the screen cracked. I was like OMFG when I heard the cracking noise. Phone was like 13 days old. Samsung does not repair it with warranty because they think that it wasn't an manufacturing defect. They said that I have dropped my phone and that's the way it broke. That could not be the case because I handled it like a baby. I would have to pay 255€ for new screen and digitizer. Hell no!! I'm a student so that sum does not fit with my wallet.

There are 2 videos on the net, both on youtube I think. Just search "i9000 Disassembly" and you'll find one of them.
The Galaxy S has a serious design flaw as the glass goes around the home button (and the call ear/speaker) so it's very vulnerable there to shattering. I had my phone in the pocket and suddenly when I take it out I see it cracked right next to the home button. What had I done during the time it got cracked? The only possible explanation was carrying a _small_ speaker that then probably hit it. I was so surprised when I saw it cracked because even a speaker hit, when I lifted it up, is hard to consider cracking the screen.
So international model Galaxy S owners, be careful at the bottom and top of the screen. They're the weak points of the glass. For me only the glass cracked and not the screen so it will be interesting to see how much it will cost to fix.

I think that you can't change only the glass. Amoled screen is so thin and I believe it's glued pretty thight to the glass. Separating them may be impossible without tearing the amoled.

i had a similar unfortunate event ... my screen cracked when i hit the phone to the metallic frame of a chair (it slipped out of my hand )...
it cracked exactly like you people said... near the home button.
i ordered the display + digitizer and i anxiously await its arrival to see if i can replace the damaged one.
it is quite tricky to dissassemble the display part but hope to succed...

Yeah that's my fear but I presume they just heat up the glue. That's how some industries do for other products. I think dental bracers (& its glue) have a different technique as well. So, will be interesting to see.

Where did you order it from?
If you were asked to pay more than $250 for screen replacement, then why don't you send it to Samsung in Korea? They will replace your SAMOLED for mere USD $100ish and ship it back to you for free (or may be not). This way you get a genium quality from original manufacturer and absolutely no hassles!
I dropped mine from around 4ft onto a concrete floor and its fine. Maybe I just got lucky.
Digitizer+Samoled set ordered from ebay. I should get it in two weeks. If possible I try to take pictures of the changing process and make an manual. I hope it's not glued tight to the chassis.
please do, i have some f***ing little scratches all over the screen, thought it was supposed to be scratch resistant.
Worst part is that it's in it's protective pouch all the time (maybe that's the probleme, dirt/dust might get trapped and rub against the screen).

I tried to remove broken screen for 2 hours and no luck. Removing the motherboard is problematic because power button is glued to the chassis so I could only turn the motherboard aside and not remove it completely. I tried also to remove metal edge but I could only separate it from the left and right edge, not from top and bottom. I hope you have better luck and report how you managed to overcome my problems.

Sorry to say got in to the same problems
Looks like the phone is build around the screen. Be careful with the metal ring, on top and bottom its between the screen and chassis, so if you brute force to much the screen cracks even more. The screen is glued to the chassis all around with superglue. I am not sure if its even possible to repalce the screen. It let me thinking that samsung wont repair broken galaxys , just replace them.
Ill keep working on the phone and keep trying, but compared to changing the screen on iphone is this like changing the screen on a iphone as a blind man without arms.
People thinking of buying this screen kit on eBay, don't do it. Just contact samsung for a repair.

I got the screen off.
No need to loosen the metaling ring around. The screen in dropped in the chassis from the front.
On the mainboard, just pop off the screen cable, long and flat next to the SD card slot.
The next step is very strange, just use brute force and crack the screen off the chassis, start from the top
When you get around the home button, be careful. Samsung has clued 2 sensors to the screen and chassis for back and option button. Best thing to do here is bend the screen back a little and cut loos the sensors from the digitizer with a sharp knife/scalpel. Samsung has used insane amount of clue on this phone.
Both the digitizer and amoled screen was clued to the chassis.
The next step is to clean off all the clue, buy loads of glue. Fill the chassis with glue and press the new screen on.

New screen in place and everything is working perfectly. Took about 3 hours first time (give or take). Its possible to do it a lot faster. The biggeste problem is the glue. Melting at about 120 celsius, but i was scared to heat the glas as i didnt know how much heat the mainbord could stand. All in all a pain in the a**, but doable.
I can also confirm this screen from ebay to be an orginal samsung amoled screen.
Best of luck too others trying a screen replace.

I am experiancing some problems!
basically I think the manufacturer installed protective screen has come loose from the hard sensor (due to use?) and so the stylus is pushing on an air bubble, and with the software keyboard (virtual keyboard) the wrong buttons are getting pressed.
I dont know whether to cut out that layer with a scalpel (carefully) and use normal screen protectors that stick properly ... has anyone done this before?
Maybe you could apply heat to it to tighten it or something I dont know so I need help!
My phone is an alpine (xda2i) but other pdas must be having the same issue?
is it ok to cut the initial plastic screen that comes integrated with the xda?
Just make sure it is actually a protective screen and not the digitizer (the membrane that makes it touch screen and sits on the LCD) that your cutting away.
with a protective skin there should be no need to cut anything... I honestly think your talking about the digitizer - in which case take to a mobile phone specialist and they could heat sync it for you.
To check whether it is the digitizer or the crappy screen protector, you should be able to see the edge of the layer at the side, especially manufacturer orginial screen protector, they are really crappy. You should be able to seperate the layer (from the edge) with something pointy (e.g. a needle), and then peel it off from there.
If you didn't see any distinguishable edge at the edge of the screen, chances are you should not do anything yourself.

If your UK based you can find out more about them from apex laptops, google them...
I'm in Edinburgh, and it took me a while before I found someone willing to replace the digitizer.
This is not a common thing - but I think with the introduction of the iphone the markets for heat syncing will go up, I suggest freeing up an afternoon and go to some of those dodgy shops that offer the unlocking service, also some computer repair shop technicians might be confident in doing something of this nature.

whatever you do dont approach o2. they are ridiculous, they want to charge 350 dollars to peel off the old one and put a new on one. search ebay and you will find digitizres with screwdriver and peeling, firming tool for 15 dollars plus postage.
o2's repair guys say it "original" spares which make it so expensive....

rang up a couple of shops one doesn't do heat sync and the other does but the machines bust, he started talking about soldering etc...(does that sound like it?) but when i re-described the problem he started talking about 50 60 quid for a new screen! which I am not prepared to pay for the relatively minor problem
How is a digitiser different from a normal screen protector anyway?
(placing a normal protector on top of it sort of helped reduce the problems because it applied a little firmness over the offending area....)
O.k the digitizer is not a screen protector. The Digitizer is a membrane that sits atop the LCD.
Note: that the LCD is not a touch screen and the only thing making your device a touch sensitive is this digitizer
digitizers can be pricey, but the reason your guy is costing it at 50 - 60 quid is because he is the middle man and needs to make a profit. You can find digitizers from apex laptops or GPS midlands (links below) and buy them at trade prices

My guy asked for 10 pounds to replace my screen, which I thought was more than reasonable because if he broke the LCD whilst replacing the digitizer (which he did) he was liable to replace it. Make sure that your guy will do this.

After googling for a bit, I came across someone who had these sort of problems with their own pda

it seems that dirt stuck under the sides can cause the same kinds of problems,
after running a bit of paper under the corners of the screen I have found some interesting results, the problems I have have changed slightly and seem to rectify temporarily when I press down (rub down) on the screen...
so I might look at taking it apart with some tools off ebay or something and giving it a good clean... any recommendations on how to strip down and clean an Alpine....? actually I'll repost that in the aline forum if there isn't already a post there....
hope your confident in doing so - I'd take it to a shop if it pisses you off that much - taking it a part and cleaning might end up with you just having a big screen phone with no touch pad...

So my youngest knocked my wife's phone off the table and cracked the screen. Looks like the "glass", digitizer, and LCD are all one piece. The best price I found was in Texas for $65. The company I spoke with on the phone seemed friendly.
Anybody replaced one yet?
I haven't taken mine apart yet. Take lots of pictures and document the process. I am sure it will be of benefit to lots of people. Also post the link to where you got the parts. That would also be helpful.

I've done a few iPhone 3G screens in the past. Even though this one's not $13, I'm glad I don't have to break out the heat gun to separate the glass...

From the dismantle guide that someone else posted, it does not seem to be too hard of a fix. The glass/digitizer/SAMOLED screen should all be one part since that is the beauty of what makes SAMOLED thinner than an LCD, there is no air/air gaps.
Seems like a good price for the whole shibang. Iphone screens cost more than that I thought and suck to replace.
I think it will be an interesting project to see how easy it comes apart and how easily the screen is replaced. I have done a few iPhones and a Blackberry Bold screen.
The more detailed the documentation the better.
65 Bucks isn't bad for a brand new phone on the market. Please please please take lots of detailed pics. I replaced numerous iphones glass and lcd's all the way from the 1gen to the 3gs, 6 in total(2 weren't mine). Hopefully it's as easy as those to replace. First day after the iphone 4 came out and friends were breaking their glass and coming to me to get them replaced digitizer and lcd combo's were running 145. But document this please. I'm interested to see what other fun stuff is under the front of the phone, already seen what's going on on the back side.

Alright. Much like a iPhone 3G/3GS, there's some sticky tape involved. Rather than splitting the glass from the LCD, you'll be pulling all glass, digitizer and lcd out. One tool I recommend for splitting the glue tape, a guitar pick. They actually send those with some of the iPhone screen kits. And grab your spouses hair dryer...
First off, thanks iLoki for the instructions. Removing the back plastic I think was the hardest. Just out of raw fear you'll snap the final upper clip. It pops when you remove it but don't waste a good panic when you hear the sound.
On the final steps of iLoki's instructions, you remove the ribbon cable under the blue tape to remove the speaker assembly. You can skip this step. Just pull the one screw that holds the assembly to the chassis. you can remove the mainboard and speaker in one piece. After that, pull what I assumed is the radio assembly on the bottom of the chassis to avoid snagging anything. It pulls right out after you disconnect the white antenna cable.
When the mainboards out, it's time to unglue. I used a hair dryer rather than a heat gun this time. It worked fine. I used low fan, high heat for about 60 seconds on each side I was working with. Use the guitar pick to start separating the screen from the chassis. You'll see the black tape that runs around the chassis in the picture. Don't worry about destroying that black seal tape. It comes with the screen. I did one side and worked the bottom, top and then the final side. If the glue is stubborn, try some more heat. Use common sense with that.
Once the screens separated, pull the black tape from the chassis. Be careful around the 4 bottom buttons. There's a silver metallic ribbon cable underneath. You'll see it in my picture with the tape rolled back.
The new screen came with 2 seperate sticky tape pieces on the screen. One for the perimeter and one for the main part of the screen. Peel them off and align it for install. Make sure the ribbon cable for the screen goes through the slot on the chassis. To get the screen "squared" up for adhesion, I used the speaker grill for alignment. AKA, start at the top, and lay it down top to bottom.
That's about it. Let me know if you have any questions. I'm around Atlanta so if I can ever help in person, let me know!

and I will be attempting this same "operation" myself in 5-12 days when the screen arrives... during a routine "check out how cool my gorilla-glass is" demonstration my amoled screen under the gorilla glass broke... yes, I am probably not the smartest person in the world.
Anyways, $73 later I will be getting my replacement screen from globaldirectparts.com - I'll let you guys know how it goes.

Cuz if its just the screen breaking, I'll probably remove my screen protector.

picked up 2 Nexus S on release day, went home happy. Preoccupied with work, so I only powered them up last night.
To my Surprise, both phones have dust under the glass! WTF Samsung? Removed the plastic sheet on the front to make sure, and yes, it's under the glass.
on one phone the dust was smack in the middle, while on the other phone it was a little left of the middle.
Can't be seen on a dark screen, but once you switch to a white background like the web or texting you can see it.
I know I am probably being OCD and anal about this, but heck I paid over $1k for both phones out of contract.
Went back to BestBuy and returned them promply, of course now they are sold out, and I have to wait for the next shipment.
Just wondering if others have similar experiences? BTW, I also had a Galaxy Tab and before returned it, it also had some dust specs under the glass...
I also own an HD2 and G2, seems HTC is better at QC.

It seems that this first batch of phones is a rather mixed bag; some have defects and others are fine. It was a good idea to return them, hopefully your replacements will be free of issues.
My first S had a little speck of something. I initially thought it was a dead pixel, but I could see it when the screen was off also so I assumed it was dust. I returned it and checked the next one out before I left the store and it seems to be good.

100% sure, remove the screen protectors on both of them and rubbed the area where it was, thought it was a dead pixel too, but no it was fine on a dark background, but on a white background could see it easily.
sold out at my local bb, but still available online might go that route.
just wanted to see other people's experiences or maybe they didnt notice yet, lol.

this happen when you have 2 layers for the screen. the internal part and the upper part where you touch.
there is an advantage for this. if god forbid you dropped and broke the screen, only the upper part gets replaced. and wouldnt cost you much to do so " and you wont get another screen with dead pixel and being OCD whatever the new screen is good or not. because the actuall inner screen isnt touched.
the bad thing about is what you said. dust can enter in the middle between both layers of the screen.
even if you get a new nexus S without dust under the screen, if you leave it in the open area with sun and wind always hitting it, you will get a dust somehow inside as well. so make sure your phone is in a pocket most of the time.
the only phone i remember right now that had both layers of the screens touched as 1 part is the iphone 2G and the iphone 4 " i am sure there are others but i dont know "
this result to no dust under the screen no matter what " unless the dust came from factory while they were attaching both screens on top of each other and glue them "
but if you break your screen in the iphone 4.... god help you.
Yeah, after about a week and couple of days of usage, I've got my first spec of dust in the top left area of the screen. Really, it's nothing noticeable but I do have some sort of OCD with my phone (god help me if I get a visible scratch on the screen).
I don't think it's really worth taking it back to get it changed as this Nexus S I have currently has no problems whatsoever, I don't even have the pink or yellow screen issue with this one. I think I'm just gonna have to live with that one spec of dust for now...
I think this may be just bad QC. I looked at ifixit taking apart the NS. Basically they said the trickiest part to the disassembly was the screen, and they had to use a heat gun to soften the glue just to separate the 2 screens. So dust entering between those 2 screens would be pretty difficult unless the glue wasn't properly applied from the assembly line.

I don't have dust under my Nexus S screen... but I do have dust under my front facing camera! And its only recently just got there - I remember playing around with it extensively when I first got it 6 months ago and the camera was really clear and sharp.
Now it is all fuzzy and white haze. And I can see all the dust particles on the underside of the glass. Annoying!
Anyone know if there's an easy way to clean it? Or is it a case of back to Samsung?
I have a blue Verizon S3. I recently dropped it and it of course landed such that there are a few chips in two corners. The damage is just cosmetic, but I'd like to fix it if possible. My understanding is that the bezel is attached to the screen,requiring either a difficult bezel replacement or a complete screen replacement, but both of which I'd prefer to avoid.
So, my guess is that the best plan would be to fill in the chips (if necessary) with epoxy and paint over it with nail polish or paint. But I don't know what would be the best match.
Has anyone tried doing this and had success with a particular type of nail polish/paint?

My recommendation is to buy a case that covers the phone completely, you'll forget about it...
I have a Diztronic case arriving Wednesday, but need to use it with my car dock without the case. It's not a big deal, but given that its trivial to do (except for finding the right paint) I would like to do it.
Well you're definately right, a simple cosmetic fix would be best, here's your part...
Not sure what to tell you man, maybe someone will chime in with some info or similar experience... It's just cheap plastic...

You can actually get the bezel separately for $17, but the screen needs to be heated to come off - not easy. Plastic repair is easier (as you pointed out) but a good job requires good paint. Hopefully someone has already tried.

It's all kitted up into one part... the solution is a $250 front part of the phone...
Repairing the bezel itself is pretty hard which is also attached to the metal frame of the phone.
You will need to heat up the screen/metal frame then take the screen off, there is a high risk you could damage the screen.
If you do so, you will need to purchase a new screen which is around $200-250
If you look on ebay, you can find some that are preassembled (screen + bezel + frame) for $250

I looked in some drug stores for some nail polish that would match, but never found anything. It's currently in a case, so I rarely notice it. Maybe sometime when I have energy, I'll try to replace the bezel, but not for now.
Well I cracked the glass on my Galaxy S3 and there is some other superficial damage around the bezel. As I am going to be getting another phone shortly anyway I was thinking about this problem and how I could get my phone as possible to "new." After consideration I'm leaning to using an automotive paint/scratch repair pen as opposed to nailpolish. Depending on how it turns out, I'll upload my process, materials, and pictures.
Well, I knew the time would come, I shouldn't be so picky on cases. I had my phone in my lap, hopped out of the car and heard my phone drop from my lap. Totally forgot it was there. One corner impact and it cracked my screen, which is disappointing because I drop my iPhone all the time and nothing happens to it. But, at least it's not the whole screen that's shattered, might even be a waste to replace it. The screen is responsive still.
With that said, anyone know where I can get a replacement screen or should I have a "professional" do it?

Ebay link looks OK. I guess you can replace screen yourself, if you have "straight" hands. Nexus 5 Teardown should helps you.

Well, if you are going to try this one yourself, it's one of the "easier" ones. As long as you get the LCD assembly and frame that is already put together. On eBay, there are some vendors selling the the assembly + frame for $135. No really crazy tools are needed. Shouldn't be anything too catastrophic happen since you are changing the whole front of the phone. If you were trying to separate the top glass, I'd definitely advise against if you aren't a pro. If you absolutely don't feel comfortable with doing it and can be without the phone for a few days, then feel free to PM me, and we can discuss other options.
If you have steady hands, enough patience and some previous experience in disassembling phones (youtube could help a lot), it shouldn't turn out to be quite a big challenge.
I would advise though in some attention taking off the rear cover (it's not difficult, but if you apply too much pressure you might end up bending or breaking it). Same goes with the battery, which is attached to the back of the screen with some adhesive. Use a plastic tool for this, and try to peel it off with a strong and steady hand. Once you do that, it's only a few screws.
I think LG would fix it for $150 so $135 to fix it yourself eh. Unless you want the accomplishment, but I have never ventured into replacing a cracked screen.
Just got off the phone with LG, they said they can't price over the phone, they have to have a tech see the phone and they'll call with a quote. So, 2 weeks without a phone just to get a quote and maybe repaired if I want to spend that kind of money.
I am 80% positive that I have viewed a few post of them charging $150 for screen replacement. You aught to check in the thread "who dropped it" the answer might be there. Its in general. Hard to find with xda app.

Well, turns out once the screen is cracked it cracks easier now. As of now, the phone starts clicking on random things when the screen is touched.
I'm debating to either buy a new one and sell this one, should come out to the same price as buying a replacement screen once the cracked phone is sold.
What would you guys suggest? I can't send it in to LG as I need my phone and replacement screen + front housing is $200 to replace myself or $220 to replace by a professional.

Can't you try the below? Quite easy to dis-assemble the phone, steady hands and proper screw driver + torx driver, use a hairdryer to warm up the glue connecting the battery + LCD to the digitizer
