I read and read and can't find answers...
1. If I buy phone with WP7 and after 1-2 years Microsoft shows us WP7 R2 or WP8, will MS plan to give me an option to BUY upgrade to new version?
Is this technical posiible?
2. Will WP7 have running Windows [Phone] Update to automaticaly install updates?
Yes, WP7 will receive updates and they will come OTA and/or through the Zune client directly from Microsoft, not through carriers/OEMs liek WM and Android. But how far out and what versions??????

Noone knows, not even Microsoft. But going off of past history, if they don't change the specs/requirements, it will get a free upgrade. But I would guess that "Windows Phone 8" will be significant revision over the 7 branch and therefore have new minimum hardware specs and therefore not work on existing devices.
I think by the time wp8 comes out we'll be integrating circuitry into our bodies. I for one welcome our new cybernetic overlord selves. Also Android fanboys will be actual Androids.

Have you ever seen updates directly from MS in a Windows mobile operating system in any other device in the market??
The SO updates, if any, are released only by the device maker (HTC, for instance) and made available for their customers and are never payed.
You have to realize that you're not talking about a PC Operating system like Windows 7 or any other PC operating system by Microsoft, but mobile device operating system that HAVE to meet all the hardware definitions specific for the device you own at that moment so that it can keep being stable and functional.
Just imagine if MS decided to release an update and all HTC diamond2 suddenly stop to recieve any calls just because it might have some specific hardware that was incompatible with the code created by MS
Not a good sight, right?
Of course HTC would have to test all the software before it can be released and decided if that could be released or not.

This was true of Windows Mobile but with Windows Phone 7 Microsoft will be providing updates directly to users bypassing the likes of HTC and the carriers. So as far as updates are concerned WP7 devices have a degree of upgradability previously unavailable to Windows Phone users, how far that goes thoough will depend on whether new hardware is required for the new software to perform fully.
Honestly I don't see the problem with buying a new phone in the 3 years (minimum) that it's going to take Microsoft to bring forth a WP8. If you ppl think WP7 has changed the sluggishness of how Microsoft works you are crucially wrong. So don't waste ur time arguing whether an update will be possible, because it will, BUT you won't want it by the time it's available.
On the other hand, maybe 2012 might've finished us off by the time the final product is ready for launch and we won't have to worry about it (jk...).
They say that they need 3-5 years to make WP7 "completely done". There will be minor and major updates before that, adding features, changing how things work and look etc. But none of them will dramatically change the OS itself. So I'd say you're safe for this time frame.
What will happen next nobody knows.
A much bigger issue than feature updates, is the ability to do fast small updates, mainly targeting stability or security.
Phones are rapidly becoming the new and most attractive market for criminals that wish to steal information and/or commit crime via. social engineering. And because of this, phones need small over-the-air security updates, preferable as often as we see them to the PC.
And I think WP7 got the platform in place from doing this from day one. Something you can't say about the other platforms.
Something you can't say about the other platforms.

Android can get OTA security updates immediately (!) pushed to all phones.
iOS users must connect to iTunes but they get them as well.

No, Only 1.6 or higher. Android v. 1.5 (Cupcake) devices still account for around 4 million devices.
And I was talking the state of the different mobile operative-systems at their launch points. Learn you read, your clueless retard.
When WP7 launches all the others are at least two years away from their "launch points".
Nobody cares about "launch points".

CRC1 patch is hitting the interwebs. Notable Android hacker JesusFreke issued the following update on his blog for those running JF1.51 US/EU builds:
http://jf.andblogs.net/ said:
OTAs in JFv1.51
July 19, 2009 If you are on the US or EU versions of JFv1.51, you’ll likely get an OTA update notification soon, if you haven’t already. I had accidentally left in the otacerts.zip file, which allows OTAs to be downloaded and verified.
For now, there are a few possible work arounds.
1. delete the otacerts.zip file manually. The file is at /system/etc/security/otacerts.zip But keep in mind if you use this method your phone will continuously re-down the OTA and try to verify it, which is bad on your bandwidth usage and your battery life
2. Replace /system/build.prop on your phone with the one from the ADP1 version of JFv1.51
3. chmod 000 the OTA file in /cache (unconfirmed solution, but is likely to work)
Or you can ignore the popups for now, and wait for my new release based on the new update (CRC1). I promise to “disable” the OTA mechanisms in a better way than simply deleting otacerts.zip

In the meantime, even if you accidentally hit “accept” on the popup, it won’t be able to install the update when it gets into recovery, so you aren’t at risk of losing root access.

This kind of mentality can breed what is affectionately called "fanboyism".
Can breed, doesn't have to breed. Like I stay loyal to JF because I'm not a fan of roms that contain many ported apps. It's mostly bloat to me, as I don't need to take advantage of it all.
Cyanogen's roms would be interesting to give a try to sometime down the road. But I'm happy on my JF ADP build, it's close enough to stock (without the bloatware the US builds add in) to be compatible and runs light enough to work snappily.
"This is serious. The only thing you can do to prevent it is turn off your phone," Miller told Forbes. "Someone could pretty quickly take over every iPhone in the world with this."
The iPhone SMS bug is just one of a series that the researchers plan to reveal in their talk. They say they've also found a similar texting bug in Windows Mobile that allows complete remote control of Microsoft ( MSFT - news - people )-based devices. Another pair of SMS bugs in the iPhone and Google's ( GOOG - news - people ) Android phones would purportedly allow a hacker to knock a phone off its wireless network for about 10 seconds with a series of text messages. The trick could be repeated again and again to keep the user offline, Miller says. Though Google has patched the Android flaw, this second iPhone bug also remains unpatched, he adds.
The new round of bugs aren't the first that Miller has dug up in the iPhone's code. In 2007, he became the first to remotely hijack the iPhone using a flaw in its browser. But while that vulnerability gave the attacker a similar power over the phone's functions, it required tricking the user into visiting an infected Web site to invisibly download a piece of malicious software. When Miller alerted Apple in July of that year, the company patched the vulnerability before Miller publicized the bug at the Black Hat conference the following month. ("See: Hacking the iPhone.")

I think it will be good for new motorola's devices but I think they wouldn't do anythink for our phone because of make an update cost money and they can't win by doing this because this phone is no more for sale.
I can't decide if this matters. On the one hand, we're now two corporate restructurings removed from a company that gave a **** about the XT720 (Motorola [small **** given] > Motorola Mobility [no ****s given] > Google [patent warfare]). On the other hand Google has legendary awful customer support. It seems like a heads Sanjay wins, tails I lose situation.
i'll say it's extremely good news
this should help improve Motorola's phone to have unlocked bootloader and stock AOS, without all the bloatware they always put on it
I don't suppose we'll receive an update for an unlocked bootloader, no? Probably not because it seems Motorola will continue to operate separately from Google

Yes, couldn't have said it better myself. Most phones have support that barely lasts 2 years. I think this is the end of the XT720. On the brighter side, this will help google fight of apple and microsoft which were just trying to dominate the market with the patents. I see this as a good move for android/opensource as a whole!
With the capability to manufacture its own hardware, Google will be better equipped to take on the iPhone. That should be good.

Google needs Motorola to take over your living room
Google Evil Agenda
My original prediction:
Posted by Urgo at December 16, 2004 11:31 PM
"Don't Be Evil?" video - beta version
Google Xistence
For the past year now I've been predicting that within the next ten Google will 'take over the world'. Most people I tell this two think I'm crazy and this will never happen saying that Google is the best company ever and they will never turn evil. I tend to disagree.
Let me take just a few minutes to explain why I think this, and then at the bottom of this entry is a link to a flash video I found today with someone else thinking the same thing.
Facts - Google owns:
- Google is the most used search engine
- Gmail, while maybe not the most used email provider (maybe it is now?) it is definitely the most highly desired
- Orkut, while mostly blown over now is still a thriving social network site
- Google News is viewed as a #1 news site for many people
- Blogger is one of the leading blog sites and blogs are all over the news these days
- Keyhole offers a satalite imageing service
- Google Desktop Search
- Google Adsense - probably the most widly used advertising on the web these days (used even on this website although I haven't seen any return yet)
- And much much more, plus all the things normal people like myself have come up with such as the random google image in the right sidebar.
My point to all of this is the following:
Through GMail Google stores and never deletes your email. They catalog it and can do a LOT with that data. With time google can write robots to parse the data to find out every bit of data about you, who you know, what you talk about, etc. Gmail bundled with Orkut Google really has a solid grip on your social network with more detail and structure than email alone. Google knows who [email protected] really is, where he lives, what his passtimes are, etc and can link it up with your email conversations. Now to get even further into your life they have the Google Desktop Search which has already been called on being invasive bypassing security on people's PC's and cataloging files that it shouldn't.
Step back for a second, Google now knows who you know, what you talk about, details about every person, everything you say on your computer, what files you have, what is in each file, basically all of your Digital Data. Oh, also if you use the google search bar (IE plug-in) in advanced mode (default.. plus ohh! I want advanced features....) they track every webpage you go, although the desktop search tool does that as well. 0wned.
Next we start to see Google's current revenue. Blogs, Keyhole, Adsense. Wow, if the inflated stock doesn't make them enough $$$ then this sure helps. Although I don't believe Google charges for blogger right now they are setting themselves up for it in the future if blogging ever takes off as a legitimate news source... News.. Google news is one of the most used news services to gather news from many sources, sorted automatically for relevance...
Now, just think if Google DID want to turn evil (assuming they aren't already) how much of the market they already own. In the 90's people switched search engines all the time, but moving email providers, etc is a lot harder to do. In a few more years they'll have people so dependant on them and their products just like Microsoft people will be stuck with Google for better or.. worse.
More info on Google being evil is at google-watch.
Wow, well this was supposed to be a very short blog entry promoting a clip I saw today but I had to get my rant over with. Other then the Google-watch site that’s been around for a while, today on mefi I stumbled into a 10? min flash movie someone made giving a detailed rundown of a possible scenario that Google might take in the coming years towards world domination. I personally haven't come up with a scenario myself, and I am uncertain if this one is how its going to happen, but I was happy to see that others feel the same way as I do, that within the next ten years Google will takeover the world, or in this movie, the media forcing the New York Times offline.
Please take the time to watch this movie, and ignore the somewhat cheesiness of it. I really think they are being insightful and this COULD happen.
Flash Movie Of How Google Will Take Over The World
Google Plans To Kill Web In Internet Takeover Agenda
Google's Motorola Takeover Bid To Draw Antitrust Scrutiny, Analysts Say
I forgot that Motorola Mobility makes cable-top boxes. That's a plus for GoogleTV which I think is also Android based? Or is that Chrome based? I forget.
Today's android news keeps getting more and more interesting. First google and moto and now Cyanogen and Samsung.
"Steve Kondik, better known as Cyanogen, the father of CyanogenMod, has posted an interesting update to his professional life on his Facebook page. Steve, who has founded the largest family of custom Android ROMs on the planet, has just joined Samsung Mobile to presumably work on Android-related goodies for one of world's largest electronics manufacturers." -Android Police
(Can't post links yet, check Android Police)
Two developments which hopefully do nothing but improve the quality of the Android OS.
Good..Now Google control both software and hardware can make better opened source devices...stupid moto is dying , may google takes over and unlock all the moto build mobile deveice bootloaders
I was thrilled when reading about it. One of the main problems is that Moto seems to fail to optimize their hardware with the software. Meaning that, despite having powerful specs in several of their phones, it stills ends up being laggy and buggy. How is it that the Nexus S with its single core can outlag the Atrix? or even the Nexus One? resolution, graphics and processor needs to be better developed for usage.
Other than the bloatware, I find the Motorola developers really fail to take advantage of the specs and integrating it with Android.
Hopefully, the Moto and Google developers can get together and finally fix this problem. Specs mean nothing if the phone can't use it efficiently.
I'm pretty sure everyone will celebrate if Moto announces that they are switching to google stock, and turning motoblur into only widget apps, instead of a launcher apk. It still boggles my mind how companies can continue to push such applications, and this applies to Sony Ericcsons terrible Timescape app. it was already a trainwreck on the X10.
Hey just wondering how to get this crap of my phone. Don't want to be tracked in anyway.

Thanks in advance
How do you know its definitely installed? ..
Also I'm guessing your device is currently unrooted, which means chances are you won't be able to remove it. Unless you choose to root your phone.
Apart from that, the fact you have a mobile at all means you can be tracked ,just from the cell you are using to make or receive calls or txts

I don't to be tracked no matter what. Thought you people would have understood that, guess I was wrong.
Short of not owning a mobile, flashing a custom rom will get rid of the HTC apps and widgets on the stock rom that has far, far too many permissions. Same with carrier apps, since they too mine data from the device in question. The peep, facebook, HTC power control and HTC calendar apps in particular required a disturbing amount of permissions to run. Part of the reason why I rooted and flashed to CM 7.1, actually. It has phone goggles and permission controlling built it actually, so it can be a safe, user controlled, relatively tracking free experience.
Hope this helps.
Oh to add, just rooting the phone will allow you to uninstall ANY app on the phone. But I think this can have a detrimental effect at times, since some of the apps tie in with the stock sense rom, which could have the consequence of having a unstable, buggy, crash prone device of your own making. Could be wrong though.
cheers mate, phone has been rooted for some time now but I thought you guys might be more specific about which files need to be deleted as to avoid detection.

im pretty sure nobody in this forum thinks this is acceptable!

I've read (Engadget or Lifehacker - I forgot) that this is only on stock ROMs.
according to one article
it looks like Android phones from Sprint have a keylogger and deep-packet inspector factory-installed, and you can't remove it without exchanging a chip.
Carrier IQ Video Shows Alarming Capabilities Of Mobile Tracking Software
You may be aware of the growing controversy surrounding Carrier IQ, a piece of software found pre-installed on Sprint phones that, according to developers who have investigated, is capable of detecting, recording, and transmitting various user actions and inputs. Among the data CIQ potentially has access to are location, SMS, apps, and key presses.
News of the software has been percolating for months on development forums, but when Trevor Eckhart recently summarized his findings, he found himself facing a cease and desist while Sprint vigorously denied the charges, saying “We do not and cannot look at the contents of messages, photos, videos, etc., using this tool.”
The C&D was quickly retracted, but Eckhart has now released a video that seems to give the lie to both Sprint and Carrier IQ’s assurances.

Note also that if you're running an Android Open Source Project (AOSP) based ROM—like CyanogenMod—you do not have Carrier IQ installed on your system. These apps are based on the original, open source version of Android, and don't include any carrier or manufacturer additions like Carrier IQ. If you're using a modded version of your manufacturer's ROM, however—for example, a modded HTC Sense or Samsung TouchWiz ROM—you could still have it installed. To avoid this, either flash AOSP based ROMs, or flash ROMs with Carrier IQ specifically removed (many will say NOCIQ or something similar on their description pages).

The application accessibility will close on the phone, however the data will still be left behind as residual storage in the same way every computer in the work can leave behind traceable history even if you physically delete everything from the hard-drive. It only takes a external programmer from a wifi connection to gain access onto the phone (even when its turned off) and they are able to uplink all that information stored on the phones memory aswell as call/storeage/user memory.
Its protected by internal security devices from external attacks, however it doesn't stop the phone companies from getting into your data anytime, anywhere, without your permission. At least with computers you can be protected from such external hacking by setting up a proxy or multiple firewalls (however even this isn't a guarantee.)

there is also an app called logging test app which will do the same it's by treve here at xda check it out as well.
The Desire S shouldn't have carrier IQ, at it's mostly US phones which have it. The UK phones do not.
Here we go: I installed STOCK 4.1.1 from Google. Did it make me happy? You'll be the judge...
The SMS bug is still present: when you use a number already stored as a contact, the area code mysteriously disappears and SMS fails due to invalid phone number. But this is just minor stuff compare to something else: at a certain point I was unable to install 5.26 MB Titanium backup due to 'insufficient storage available' (I still have around 12GB free out of 16GB on my Galaxy Nexus). Does it make any sense?
I did some research online and it seems it is a known problem for many months already, and there are articles about how to fix it in '8 easy steps'.
You've gotta be kidding... I ain't doing no 8 steps! Installing a program from Google play is something as basic as it can get, and as a consumer I'm not willing to fix major bugs myself! I still can't understand why I was sold an early beta OS as properly functional program without any warning. I want my money back! (I doubt it's possible though...) I'm in the process of being born again... as an Apple 'fan boy'. Can't recall any bug at all (even minor) for 1.5 years of using iPhone 4.
Google, get real: hire QA team to test your OS before it is released to consumers - I'm not being paid for doing a job of your software tester! You have all the resources in the world to do so...

That titanium backup problem is isolated on only ti backup and no other apps.
I had the same problem and I had to wait for titanium track to update it.
SMS problem has got to be a device specific issue, never had any problem like that and neither has the majority of Android users.

I hope that's the case with Titanium backup only...we'll see...
When it comes to SMS bug 'to be a device specific issue', well, the device is GOOGLE Nexus, and obviously on this phone one would expect device specific issues less than on any other Android. That's exactly my point: Google doesn't bother with proper QA testing prior to release, any we can not blame phone manufacturer in this case as the phone belongs to Google as much as to Samsung.

You cant be serious with the whole cant remember apple having bugs stuff. Apple is notorious for pushing out updates and phones full of bugs, remember when the iphone 4 came out and they had to give everyone a free case to solve the phones terrible antenna problems? I used to use the iphone and every software update was full of bugs and problems, and i even had to jailbreak the phone just to get around some of the issues.
OK, here is an update: I have to disappoint you - 'insufficient storage' issue is not related to just Titanium backup. It may effect absolutely any application you are trying to install or update (even auto-update). Rom manager can't update itself due to this error. I was not able to install 'world clock' and it goes on and on and on... This is the major bug users have been reporting at least from the beginning of 2012 and Google doesn't give a **** about it. But it still releases new OS without even bothering to address major issues with a previous one.
When it comes to SMS issue mentioned above: the suggestion that it's just my phone affected is ridiculous - it's obviously a software issue, not hardware. I checked with my friend who used to own Galaxy Nexus and he reported exactly the same SMS bug!
Android may be an open source, but Android cellphones are not free and can be quite pricey. So I don't see any excuse for Google to come up with their own phone (Galaxy Nexus) with lousy hardware (which can be partially blamed on Samsung) and as lousy OS (which can not be blamed on anybody but Google).
Besides that, Galaxy Nexus is poorly designed from hardware perspective, and plastic toy look and feel and touch screen sensitivity is not the major problem. The volume buttons are so easy to press by accident when holding the phone that you have to adjust volume all the time for no obvious reason. This is the most inconvenient phone I've ever had. It's really funny to read reviews comparing Galaxy Nexus and iPhone 4: how can you compare fully functional well designed product with an early stages prototype which needs to be worked on a lot before any commercial release? It's really time for some class action lawsuit against Google for deliberate fraud. Can't wait to dump Android alltogether if iPhone 5 supports AWS frequencies.
Well then go with the iPhone which was made for Mr average while android was targeted to people that like learning a tinkering.
XDA is a place to come to learn to fix issue not whine about them.

I ran into a technical hurdle with implementing the Windows RT 8.1 jailbreak. I believe that it will only be possible to install the jailbreak while in a command prompt recovery console. You'd have to hold volume down, or other similar mechanism for non-Surface products, select recovery, then select Command Prompt. You'd have to, of course, be very careful when you do this, because the "format your SSD" options are right next to it.
Would this make you reluctant to install such a jailbreak? Once installed, it should stay persistent until a major upgrade event like a service pack or Windows 8.2/9.0.
The reason for all this is because it turns out that what I'm trying to do can only be done on the C: drive. In order to do my exploit, I need raw write access to the disk sectors, and Windows does not allow writing to mounted filesystems to even applications running as Administrator. Only kernel drivers are allowed to do such raw writes, and I'm trying to become a kernel driver. They actually do this to defeat attempts to defeat driver signing. =)
A way to bypass this, of course, is to get to the drive when it's not mounted. You can't lock the C: drive for raw writing without booting to another OS installation, such as the recovery image.
This method is somewhat risky; I'd be doing sector-level writes to your primary disk partition. There would be a number of precautions to try to prevent writing to the wrong location, but there can never be guarantees that I don't screw up the code and delete your priceless documents.
How do you all feel about this?
I would totally be fine with this. Can't wait to see exactly how the Jailbreak works. Anyways if you need a Surface 2 tester to test before the finish release I could help XD
I kinda guessed it would degenerate to this.
I won't mind, but then again I wouldn't consider myself an "average" jailbreak user, and compared to how easy (relatively) the initial RT8.0 jailbreak was this might be an issue.
Do we have any idea the kinds of people who are currently using the jailbreak?

According to Microsoft just hackers, according to me: Devs, Hackers, and noobs who think they can run Minecraft XD
I'm rather concerned about the final group; the others are probably going to live fine with it.

Agree, still though release it but with quite a large USA-Style license. Like do not run this on your cat style
I don't think it matters that much (or at all) if it's a one time thing. While some people have the tendency to screw up everything regardless of how well the procedure is documented (you can't avoid those YOU BROKE MY DEVICE people anyway), they know the risks beforehand.
As for the data, the documents are most likely synced up to skydrive since the local-only account option is hidden pretty well in 8.1.
Also, just flashing a different ROM to a mobile phone can be much more complicated than your decribed procedure - just a couple of days ago I helped a friend to "upgrade" their Android phone and I had to install a SDK and issue some shady console commands over the USB in the recovery mode to get it to work. And as far as I could tell this is considered pretty standard.
PS2 jailbreak

I think it's OK. Do you remember rooting of first android phones? Working on ADB Shell and so on?
So one time boot into recovery and execute carefully some commands will be OK.
I think it's okay, too.
And if someone Says it isn't okay: Do you want to abandon all your work you have done for the Jailbreak so far?
I think a Jailbreak like this is better then none, and when there is no easier, less critical method to do it everyone should be fine with yours.
I'd be fine with it too. Especially since the procedure only has to be done once. Sure it might run the risk of data loss, but I'd be sure I had a backup first.

Hmm, not sure where I fit into that. IT guy that wants to make use of the RT desktop and isn't a hugh Modern UI fan, but couldn't afford a Surface Pro (and wanted the better battery life anyway). I can run Minecraft on it?!?
Thanks again for all your work on this jailbreak Myriachan! I'd pretty much written RT 8.1 off as I had no idea if or when a jailbreak would or could be developed. But now I'm kind of excited!
Looking forward to it.
I think most would be fine with it. If not, they do not have to use it.
Just put up a VERY BIG WARNING and beyond that you can't stop people from not following directions.
If it have a way to go back to original state (before jailbreak, without factory reset). I don't have any problem.
Hi.
I would do it, as long as I end up with Notepad++ and svn on my Surface RT ^^
Thanks for asking, though. I really like your attitude.
I'm sending best wishes and keep on looking forward to the mighty jailbreak,
Kalle

This is precisely what he meant, too many people seem to read jailbreak as: I can play minecraft. You can't.

I think he was joking.
Offtopic, but Minecraft should be able to run with a openGL-DriectX Wrapper, and a lot of work with Ikvm. but that aint going to happen anytime soon if ever.

IKVM cannot load minecraft on x86, let alone ARM. It doesnt support any external library with native code in it (ie, LWJGL)

yes, thats why i suggested a wrapper (translate the OpenGL code to DirectX code for the Cpu, we have been using that a lot in school projects latly) and modifying of the source code to allow such a thing

Sorry, I was joking. I've read all the queries about running Minecraft, both on this forum, and on Microsoft's own forum. Suffice to say, If someone does get Minecraft running on Windows RT they will be a rather popular person...
Also sorry for the off-topic bit...
Sounds good to me.
I think it'd be good for anyone who actually wants to jailbreak the RT, so no problem Just put up a warning and disclaimer (although I think that the people who wouldn't understand the technical details and warnings wouldn't read the disclaimers anyway...)
Thanks for your hard work. Looking forward for the RT8.1 jailbreak
