My money's on mid December for ATT if it is released in September

But in all seriousness, just look at this as a prime example.
AT&T Tilt was released on October 4, 2007. The 6.1 update wasn't rolled out until August 4, 2008, almost a year after the phone was release. WM 6.1 was available to Carriers in April of 08, which is still half a year, so I do not expect a 2.2 update until sometime next year.

Damn ATT, here's hoping to a custom ROM right after September update.

Oh, you know it. And we will all flash it.

Hopefully ATT wont lag on it, cuz Sprint just announced that there Evo will have 2.2 August 3rd.

I'm sure AT&T has their top android developers working on this..... Its too bad that their best ANDROID developers consist of three guys in a basement somewhere...

All we need is a custom kernel for the Samsung Captivate and we can a bug free version of froyo on our devices right now.

To me, people need to stop asking about froyo. It's coming, it's announced and confirmed, that's great.
The question people need to be asking Samsung, so we can get them on the record committed to it now, is will you release a Gingerbread update for the phone as long as the hardware is capable of supporting it. The OS is only 2-3 months from being unveiled if Google sticks to their time table, and if the rumors are true it'll be a much bigger overhaul than 2.1-2.2 is.
So yeah, unless we want our phones to be outdated before the end of the year, we need to start making a push as a community to get a commitment from Samsung to support not just the OS that was released 4 months ago, but also the much bigger one that's right around the corner.

Does having the source make it as likely we can have a custom Gingerbread ROM as a Froyo ROM?

I know patience is a virtue but man, i've been checking out the Evo 4G forum and there is so much activity and excitement about the successful leaked Froyo update. When is it our turn? I'm so jealous!!! Lol.

I would think they would be stepping up the date as a lot of the other android phones are getting their froyo in August.

Anyone still dream of 2.2 update in this month?

Back in July, UK Galaxy S announced Froyo update will be delivered in Sept. And it looks like they will have it.
And the US market, well, they don't even have an ETA yet.
Talk about fragmentation.

Every night, I do.
I think there's gonaa be a froyo update for our captivates soon, i've been reading and somewhere I saw it was not going to be through OTA so I don't really know what's gonna be the update method.
Update this month??
Remember at&t has never, EVER, upgraded a smartphone which it sold. Never!! Do not know whether it is incompetence or a desire to get you to buy a new phone with FROYO and a new contract. They have absolutely zero experience in this area, OTA or not.
Consider the poor Backflip, still stuck in Android 1.3X in spite of all the promises.
They updated the Fuze. A couple of times i think. I ran custom ROMS but I know they updated it at least once.

Yep, but we have to give HTC and Samsung credit for those upgrades, and the one to the Tilt I, but AT&T, I don't think so. If Samsung can work around all the crippling of the Captivate, maybe they will offer us something, but the stock Galaxy S is not quite the same beast as the Captivate. OTA and from AT&T, it'll be a first. We shall see!
Take it back. AT&Ts HTC Aria just got a minor update, interesting thing: it was OTA

That's not true. I had a Tilt 2 before making the switch to Android, and they just released an updated ROM for it with Sense instead of TouchFlo 3d. I thought THAT would never happen.
It's coming, but it will be long after the other carriers.
September 23rd
A number of sources are saying the Captivate 2.2 will come on the 23rd (or are they saying Galaxy S 2.2). Either way, it may be a bit before an official US version is available, but once the kernel is out, I would think that we'll see roms become available.
Just hang on a bit longer!
considering it took AT&T almost a year to upgrade the bold 9000 from 4.6 to the 5.0 OS that was available for months from other carriers, i wont be expecting froyo on this phone anytime soon.

It wasn't AT&T, that upgraded the phone to WinMo, it was Samsung, as a matter of fact, I don't think AT&T supported the phone if you upgraded it to 6.1 [I miss my BlackJack, lol]. And you had to download it from their site, and all that other bull.
Either way, I just want Froyo, it's driving me crazy, all this talk about it coming, and what not. Leave it to AT&T, and all US carriers to load the phones with such nonsense, that the phones software has to be beta tested 30x's over before it can even hit the consumer. By the time 2.2 is out for the US Galaxy S devices, every other carrier/droid phone is going to be talking about 3.0.
It's the one thing that I will give to Apple, they close sourced their equipment and their OS, not that I agree with it, but they locked AT&T out of alot of aspects of the OS, and how they bundle software with it [no AT&T bloatware upon purchase], so they beta test for a month or so, depending on how major the release, and then push it out, and patch along the way.
I understand how difficult it is for android, with different HW spread across all the MFGs, but if the MFGs stop with the bloat we'd all be happy with Froyo right now
I hope it comes out this month. I think it's mandatory for Samsung to release an update across all carriers because of the faulty GPS. I'm hoping we'll know something by the 23rd.
I'm sure we'll get the update sooner or later - heck, September is only halfway through. While it does seem unlikely that we'll get this is month, deadlines frequently slip in software development, so it's not entirely surprising.
Chances are, those of os who want to will be running the i9000 Froyo ROM with a fixed kernel before we see the update roll out from AT&T, but I look forward to being delightfully surprised. We've already fixed the rotation issues, so it just remains to be seen if the headphone logic issue that popped up in the i9000 2.2 ROMs persists in the final build.
One word, no.

Dead wrong. I personally get AT&T updates on following Smartphones:
1. HTC 2125 WM5.0->WM5.1
2. Samsung BlackJack WM5.0->WM6.0
3. Samsung BlackJack 2 WM6.0->WM6.1
4. Samsung Jack WM6.1->WM6.5
GPS update this month? Maybe.
Froyo? Not bloody likely. We'll be extremely lucky to see Froyo in 2010.

I challenge you Samsung

Well, I can't get my phone until friday due to some problem with att. For those of you who know fridays October first and unless samsung either comes out with a 2.2 update or an official release date by then as they previously stated they would im going to be joining the iphone crew. Cant stand this lack of support. At least with apple you know they support your device for 2-3 years. Or maybe ill just wait it out either to see what samsung does or for the white iphone.
ahh screw it
Wow... Lol.... Stfu!
I wouldn't hold your breath.
Anyway, I'd want them to figure out what the hell went wrong with the "minor" OTA that was bricking stock phones before pushing out a major update like Froyo.

Sasmsung announced 2.2 in September for the international Galaxy S NOT the captivate or any other US variant. They have clarified this a few times. Last week, they have announced that the 2.2 update for International Galaxy S is delayed until October.

Because Samsung has yet to launch 2.2 on their own "premiere" Galaxy S line of phones.
Of course, this is my opinion.
2.2 has been released officially since May 2010.
Droid X was released July 15th, with Android 2.1
Android 2.2 was pushed OTA to Droid X on September 22, 2010
Samsung Captivate was released July 18th with Android 2.1... still no Froyo
I'm not complaining. I'm stating my opinion...
And now.. 2.3 is coming out and I think most of us would agree. If the N1 can handle 2.3, so can the Captivate, the whole Galaxy S line.
So yes.. lazy.. because now they will have to start working on a release for 2.3 and they haven't even finished a 2.2 release. You and I already know Motorola is on top of this.
Maybe lazy isn't the best choice of words.. but.. whatever. I think you get my point.
Ah, in relation to Froyo, gotcha. I agree to a certain extent.
I highly doubt we will see an official 2.3 release...

Yeah haha. I mean I'm not bashing Samsung. I'm just in fear that they might be a bit over their heads now.
They basically are going to have to stay in constant development with this.. They haven't finished 2.2 yet and now 2.3 is about to be released.
I fear that our phones will be left behind FAR before they really should be.
Idk.. I'm a pessimist a guess.

That's strange...last few time I talked with the Galaxy people at Samsung..it was told to me that 2.2 has been finished at all of the Carriers for some time..This makes this very confusing for me to say the least. Is it really Samsung at fault...or the carriers that are at fault with all of the delays of releasing the 2.2 update stateside ? Is it the us based carriers that are adding to it to be able lock the phones down and change things around on it..or Samsung ?
I can understand where folks are saying Android is fragmented if the carriers are causing this, but I don't understand why there can't be unified coding across all manufacturers lines when it comes to the os of Android. After all isn't it based off of ASOP and Linux and isn't that supposed to be all open source..? I do understand the differences in the various hardware requirements between all of the Android phones..but the core os should be the same shouldn't it ? So...who is at fault..the carriers..or Samsung..or both ? Who is really causing the delays..? Who is going to make the determination if any future development happens..the carriers or Samsung ?

Hmmm... obviously, Samsung is working on a 2.2 release. We have already gotten two leaked builds. The official release will be coming. Now with regards to 2.3. I don't think it's going to happen. It seems as though Samsung is focusing their efforts to push new products rather than support old ones.
"Old Ones?" this phone isnt even 6 months old yet and it'll be obsolete soon. if not for the geniuses here at XDA it would already be obsolete. i love my captivate but i think its getting ready to get left in the dust. hope i get proven wrong though.
Left in the dust? How so? 2.3. Is not even out yet. At least we have leaked versions of froyo...which will still be better then an official one. All we need is the source. The devs can handle the rest from there otherwise the devs spend there time unlocking all the crap that Samsung and att locked down

This is what I don't like about Android (well not Android itself, but the Android market)...while N1 owners will be playing with 2.3 I will be stuck with 2.1.
F Samsung/Motorola whoever and their heavily modified ROMS. I don't need your Touchwiz/MotoBLUR/etc...just give me the stock ROM so that you save yourself the headache of upgrading and us too.
Samsung originally released their 2.2 back in late September/October to Europe - then was promptly pulled due to it being complete junk.
Now they are re-distributing it this month with a probably still junk release of 2.2. They screwed up so bad due to all the crap they half-assed into these phones (touchwiz, rfs file system etc...)
Samsung really needs to re-evaluate their development team and decide if they are going to be serious about the software side or farm it out to a third party that can program. Because.... their development department is probably the worst out there when it comes to android development.
I mean... there are probably Kirf teams in China that can code better!
Lazy.. no, greedy and not caring about the consumer and not taking pride the end result? Sure I can go with that.

This exactly.
Android is supposed to be this huge open source project, and while we can root and mod and flash all we like, we should also have the option of just being able to go to google and get the newest version ourselves.
The fact that not only the carriers (which is to be expected) but the manufacturers feel the need to bloat up the software is frustrating and annoying!

[Official] Froyo coming "later in December"

According to this article: http://mobilesyrup.com/2010/12/10/s...2-2-might-be-released-later-in-december-2010/
We may see Froyo later in December. But if you are like me who have been waiting for the official release and not the leaked roms, and have been searching "when, when, when, when." It may just be here. But just like the past, Samsung has failed to deliver on the date when they said: October, November, December. Now it is late December.
I will be waiting.
Keep in mind this is for Canadian carriers.
also keep in mind samsung always says one day and it ends up being forever later!
Also keep in mind that the article used the word "MIGHT"... not "WILL".

This statement contradicts itself.
I think if we get Froyo by Dec 31 at 11:59pm we will be very lucky. As to Gingerbread that might come in 2012 if at all. I really dont understand the foot dragging by the US carriers. Unless ATT is locking out more functions
I'm thinking how we can all aim our fireworks for New Years at Samsung's headquarter. Or AT&T as well.
We will just have to wait and see, If history holds true, (like they did with WM builds) the Offical update from ATT will be nothing more then the leaked rom we have been using for months with a few things removed or added. Like the lock out for tethering without a tethering plan and such.
AT&T is like,
"hey look, Google just sent us froyo, should we roll out the update to our payed customers?"
"No. We have to add our bloatware first, that is the most important thing"
"Well they've been waiting awhile now..."

You are splitting hairs - AT&T is the driver behind the added bloatware. Samsung only does because AT&T requires it. If they had their way, they would have one ROM that worked on all carriers. They would still add Touchwiz to differentiate themselves from vanilla Android - and for average joe consumer this is a successful strategy. AT&T wouldn't add the bloatware (force Samsung to add it) if they didn't generate a decent amount of revenue on it.

ics source coming at nov.17

The CEO of Notion Ink, Rohan Shravan, is at it again with news about the Ice Cream Sandwich source code release, saying it will be released November 17. While it's tempting to just toss this aside as another rumor in the ICS/Galaxy Nexus craze of late, Mr. Shravan has a track record that shows he's usually right. Last year, he did the same thing with the Gingerbread release, accurately predicting more than could be a good guess, and just last month he told everyone about the OMAP chipset and Ice Cream Sandwich using them as a reference platform. When he talks, it's always worth listening, and the Nov. 17 date has already been thrown out there as the European release. If we see source code on the 17th, the 18th is going to be a very fun day for a lot of us.

No, the ICS Source Code will be made available to the public on Nov 17th. This means that Developers will be able to start working on ICS for a specific device. The advantage here is that the SGS II has a huge fan-fair also is quite open with development and has kick azz hardware, hence it will most likely be picked up for development right away with results to show soon after.
I won't lie, after reading this, I got really excited. For the past few weeks, I've been using MIUI, but once a stable ICS ROM comes out (I'm hoping/guessing CyanogenMod), I think the pure AOSP experience will be even better

Wait a minute, Google are hosting a big Android event on the 16th! Good chance that that means they'll release the source code the day after the event, or on the day (if we assume the difference in date due to time zones). This adds a lot more credibility to the idea
I am a bit concerned about the date that Samsung is going to release ICS for SGS II.
Wouldn't this still be unusable on our SGS2 unless they release a device with proper drivers for the mali400?

No, the ICS Source Code will be made available to the public on Nov 17th. This means that Developers will be able to start working on ICS for a specific device. The advantage here is that the SGS II has a huge fan-fair also is quite open with development and has kick azz hardware, hence it will most likely be picked up for development right away with results to show soon after.

I hope people take notice of this instead of the same question over and over. Sure devs are looking forward to working with this source code. This is what makes android the best mobile os ever. Should imagine it wont be all that long for the roms to start trickling through.

Regarding drivers there is not going to be any big changes from 2.3.7 to 4.0. So it wont be a problem. Official drivers may be more optimized .

I Agree. I think we will see a stable build of ICS with 2.3.x drivers and a much more optimized build via Samsung.
From there, the fun begins of Custom Roms and Great Tweaks.

I think that's a lot of wishful thinking to expect it this month, at least a stable build for us to use on a daily basis.
I think Mid DEC should be a good time for a decent build, permitting driver compatibility and the Source Code release is on the 17th.
