Captivate With Exchange - Captivate General

I finally got sick of my iphone 4 and decided to give the captivate a try. So far I've been pleasantly surprised on how much I actually like the phone. It will be great once the chefs actually start making some roms for it.
So I've had my phone for 3 days and I cannot get exchange to push to it. When I open the email program and hit refresh, it works fine. Just not the push. Contacts and Calendar also work fine. All the 23 other iphones including mine still work fine. Just not the captivate.
I tried searching and found nothing that really helped so I thought I'd see if anyone had any input.
Yes. Push is enabled in the settings menu.

I cant check for myself (because my corporate exchange does not work at all with the stock mail program), but did you go into options, then notifications and set the interval to sync to "as mail arrives?"
You might want to give touchdown a try, 30-day trial, while ugly, works great

What version of Exchange is your company running? Older versions don't do Push.

Agreed.
What version of Exchange are you running? Do you have OWA access? I have set the mail up with OWA address and push worked just fine. Although I currently use Touchdown. I hardly ever use my blackberry now, just sucks carrying two phones.

You can download quickoffice for free, and that should get your exchange working.

Thanks for the input guys.
We run a mixed 2007/2003 enviorment.
Now my iphone and everyone's iphone always worked without issue. So I did a little more digging and figured out what my problem was. When I checked the front end server's logs I was getting the error:
Unexpected Exchange mailbox Server error: Server: [email.company.com] User: [[email protected]] HTTP status code: [500]. Verify that the Exchange mailbox Server is working correctly.
For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.
I found the fix. It's an exchange issue that M$ knew about and released a hot fix for it. But you need to request them to send it to you (it took M$ 5 minutes to send the file).
The fix that worked for me:

PUSH Email-K9, Seven. Issues!

Hi guys. I run custom roms like bc. I have issues with push email.
It seems to work on begining and then week later stops working.
Seven is early in it's beta stages so maybe why it stops working
K9 on the other hand never works on evo as push email. It won't deliever unless you do manual check. Also i don't want to do polling every 5 min or so cause that's not push email but pull email which drains battery life. Yahoo client is weird too. Not push. Don't work well. Can't use gmail as my account is on yahoo.
Any ideas? I really would like k9. Any tips, tricks etc ?
?
I have no idea what you mean. Ive been using k9 ever since i switched to droid, on my hero and on my evo.
You are not setting it up properly. You know that PUSH = IMAP right? If youre setting up your accounts as pop3, it wont push. pop3 is pull only.
Download K9 from the website, not the market for the latest release. they upload a new version every 3 or 4 days its awesome. I have 0 problems, and ive gotten everyone I know to switch to it...
more than likely it is yahoo thats the problem. Not to sound rude but android is ALL about gmail. Itll work with other clients but its just not native support. Gmail (imo) is 9000x better than yahoo/hotmail/etc.
I thinkfor yahoo/hotmail imap you have to pay for it.

I don't bother with pop. I installed latest from k9 source. .10 ver. I did auto setup. Did not set anything up manually. Shall I ? If so what would the setting be? I like k9 format but don't work. None do. I finally got maildroid to work and it works great but i like k9 format much better. I don't know why it don't work.
Oh i see you posted a link with settings. Will try that. Thanks a lot for the link.
auto settings for k9 usually dont work. google manual yahoo imap settings and go from there. You may have to get Yahoo Plus or whatever they call it

What's the best email client?

I'm looking for a client that's as good as the iPhone mail client. I'd like it to support multiple exchange accounts as well as render html based email properly. Also an email client that will render all emails proportionally so I don't have to scroll left and right on an email unless I zoom in. Also supporting pinch to zoom would be great. I've tried K9 but was left unsatisfied on it's implementation... what are the better clients on Android?
I'm in the same conundrum(though not for exchange accounts, mostly IMAP).
Tried k9, which fails quite bad and maildroid, which is just slow. Finalyl just settled on the Samsung Mail app that came with my Galaxy S. I'm sure you can find an APK for it around somewhere if you have a different phone.
It's as close to the iPhone mail prgram as I can find on Android

I don't understand how any could could be disappointed in K9 Mail, it works flawlessly for me. The GUI is simple yet intuitive and presents the right information at the right time, it ALWAYS works, it's fast, it uses VERY little battery, it supports a great deal of functionality.
The GUI between 2 and 3 got even better adding "Move to Archive" and such type buttons, making common actions easier to do.
One more big plus; Tasker supports it, so you can act on incoming emails, send email, etc via K9.
Only two things it's missing IMO..
Per-folder alerts (I combine all emails (forwarded) into one, and most of them go into specific folders) would be nice, but I've done this in Tasker now so no biggie here.
Second, if you move mail to a folder you don't sync, it stays local and doesn't clean up. IE: If you move Trash mail to the server Trash folder, it moves on the server and on the mail client. However it never gets purged in K9 after X days or after the server deletes it if you don't sync that folder. So what I've done is I sync a few such folders once a day.
FYI, I use Dovecot for my IMAP server, one mailbox IDLE, 4-5 sync once a day. I use Tasker to turn off Syncing at night and have K9 set to not sync when it's disabled so at night K9 doesn't receive mails, turns back on in the morning for me. And when I get certain emails in (based on subject, sender, etc) Tasker alerts me in special ways.
I don't really use the encryption/signing functionality, but it also works quite well paired with APG.
I just don't see why anyone wouldn't like it if they use IMAP. I assume POP would be a similar experience. Exchange can DIAF.
I swear by K9 Mail. Best email app I've ever used. Bonus for being open-source and updated frequently too.
If you are not satisfied with the market release version of K-9 you can always DL a newer version from the development web site.
You can view changes by clicking on the source tab and then the changes sub-tab.
I used K9 as my default email client on the Mytouch 3G. It is a really good, strong, and full of features application. I highly recommend it. Right now I'm using the default that came with the Mytouch 4G because it fits my needs.
Theres always Touchdown and this another one that I can't recall name of if you want to go paid route , K9 does everything and more for me so i've no complaints, The iphone mail app is PATHETIC! look for samsung mail (social mail app) if you want but so far the best is K9 and touchdown for exchange
The stock mail app on my Captivate can't access Yahoo!mail on WIFI and when I tried K9, it slowed my phone down to a crawl. Everything lagged so badly I had to uninstall after less than an hour. And yeah, lag disappeared right after I uninstalled K9.
SO yeah, I, too, am looking for a good mail app.
Try Seven.....it's been working great for me.

New Member...Mytouch 4G Exchange Email Problems

First off I want to say Merry Christmas to everyone....I need help and since Tmobile is almost in possible to reach anymore I turned to the forums...I got my Mytouch 4G when it first came out and I love it!!!! First phone I ever had with NO LAG at all...But I cant send emails with the Exchange Email program? I heard everyone is having this problem? Does anyone have a fix for this yet? PLEASE PLEASE help !!!!...
Thanks, Ken
My Exchange ActiveSync account works fine here and has since I got the phone a few days after release. I also use EAS for my Google Apps account on my MT4G.
What happens when you try to send? Do you get some sort of error, or does the email sit in your outbox, or get saved to drafts?
Likely it's a problem with the Exchange settings on your phone or your organization's Exchange configuration. Best bet would be to talk to your Exchange admin.
When I send an email it doesnt show in my sent box or my outbox it just disappears from my phone and it never reaches the person im sending it to..I heard HTC knows of the problem but I called there and got no help like they didnt know anything about it...I heard its something to do with the Active Exchange 2010...I guess the Iphones had the same like problem but Apple fixed it already..I can do anything with the email except SEND.....Sucks bad cause i need it for work
Oh man, I forgot about that bug...I had a couple clients whose iPhones didn't work with their Exchange servers until iOS 4.1 was released.
I just tested with an Exchange 2010 server and am experiencing the same issue as you. As far as I can tell, there are 2 workarounds, one you can implement and one your Exchange admin can implement:
1) Install the default Google email app from 2.2. It works properly with Exchange 2010. You will lose search capability for your Exchange mailbox(es) with this, though. Here's a thread where someone posted the apk. I tested it out and it works for me:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=729753
Alternatively, you could pay for and install the Touchdown app from the market. Personally, I'm not a big fan of it.
2) Your exchange admin can create a new EAS policy for you (it can be exactly the same as the default if that's what is being used):
http://social.technet.microsoft.com...0/thread/bcc50ce4-0c97-4851-987d-1f5080d7942b
Please note that I attempted this with the 2010 testbed server I have access to and it did not work. However, this server does not have Exchange 2010 SP1 installed. I can't install the SP to this VM until my coworker is done using it for testing, so I can't tell you if this workaround works properly for our devices.
Good luck...sorry for doubting you, I forgot I was still using my phone with 07 servers.
Thats more than a bug....lol...But Thank you I will look into this

[Q] Please give me a decent mail app

Okay, so far I've tried just about every mail app I know. I wonder if I've missed any...
In-built app:
- Basic functionality
Moxier:
- Doesn't send any emails! (useless error msg and no help from web)
- No decent widgets
- Clunky interface
RoadSync/Touchdown:
- Horrible interface
- Cannot select multiple recipients!
Surely there must be a client out there like the HTC Desire client that actually works well and gives proper functionality.
Or am I missing something??
Ferg.
code.google.com/p/k9mail/ has always worked for me with MSN, AOL and Yahoo.
Seven is the best one I have tried so far...
http://community.seven.com/main.php
Touchdown allows multiple recipients.
The interface is clunky though, especially in dual-pane mode. Still, I always end up going back to Touchdown for my corp email. It just works.
I am using K-9 mail and its running like charm.

Please define "proper functionality".
Ah, I guess by proper functionality I mean:
- Easy to access buttons for manipulating emails
- Can sync more than 1 month worth of email
- Can set periods for syncing (Push during the day, off at night)
- Doesn't show email text incredibly small (seemingly at random) and then not word-wrap properly
- Actually moves/deletes objects when you ask it to, not when it manages to contact the Exchange server again
etc.
There are a lot of shortcomings with the in-built app, I think.
I forgot to mention I'm using Activesync, not Gmail/Hotmail or POP3 etc.
Thanks for the suggestions everyone; I'll check them out.
Ferg.

Yeah, the interface is very clunky, and annoying that when you first start it it wastes most of the screen with the preview pane (which I don't think you can switch off permanently).
Multiple recipient - if I remember correctly, you can't multi-select from the address book. Am I mistaken?
If you can use IMAP with your Exchange server (and I doubt that'd be an issue at most companies), K-9 mail probably fits most of what you're looking for. I use it with Push for my Exchange account, and it's pretty much instant and doesn't waste battery polling for mail. You can enable larger buttons for multi-select and starring mail, and I find it to be pretty decent. Now I wish it would do the landscape view that the Samsung app does, but otherwise, I love it.
Is there any way to copy and paste in the standard email app?

TBH, it's unlikely IMAP will use less battery than ActiveSync. AS sends only a small amount of data every 15mins or so to keep the session open; IMAP's the one that needs to poll constantly. Unless it's IMAP Idle, which Exch doesn't do.
Not sure I can/would want to use IMAP on my hosted Exchange account but I guess it's an option. Just a bit married to AS, what with it being my job. ;-)

If you long-press in the body, it gives you a kind of select thing, but it's hit and miss. Sometimes seems to select a whole line, in which case you touch it again and it copies it; sometimes gives you the nice select tool that you can expand etc but no way I can see of copying the text!
i use k9 and i like it. except strangely on the tab when i reply to all, i also get the reply (which annoys me a bit). yet on my N1 k9 doesn't behave this way.
The IMAP is done through PUSH, not PULL, so it's not sending anything until the server tells it it has something for it (well, technically I think it's set to every 60 minutes send a small ping to keep things alive, but only if it hasn't gotten any messages for 60 minutes). AS is great when it's set up. I actually run my own Exchange server at home (actually 2000 still running on an old dual P3 box that keeps chugging away), and it's a lot easier in a small environment to configure/maintain IMAP over AS there. I love AS when IT has to maintain it for me though, and when I have a device. Maybe I'll have a big ARM tablet running Windows Next using AS

+1. I've always liked the K9 client.
Cool to see I am not the only one complaining...
I come from a TP2 and a great Exchange 2010 setup. The terrible email client of the Tab makes me regret my efficient TP with pocket outlook from WM6.5
Honestly pOutlook is an incredibly good email client. I never realized until I got my tab...
Then we need a serious calendar app and a serious contact app
Disappointing software on Android so far... (It's my first Android device)
Aye, I think all of the Android mail apps are comparatively poor except the Desire one.
But I don't regret swapping WM for Android in a million years. Battery life, rebooted to keepit going, buggy **** software...
Bugless - okay, so I guess it's IMAP idle you're using. I don't have that option, although standard IMAP would work it's not ideal.
Poo. Just have to put IP with the native client or Touchdown.

Zoinks, I can ENTER multiple recipients, but cannot SELECT multiple recipients from any address book.
Am I missing something, or is this the case? If that's the way it's meant, that makes it useless. :-(
Try "Seven". Only available as a beta at the moment I think, but you can get it from:

Seems like a good app. Will sync contacts & calendar to the local device too, also works as an IM app for GTalk and MSN.

May be, but it says it only works through OWA..! Seems a weird way to access Exchange in this day and age. Must have been to stingey to pay for the ActiveSync licence.

Best Push Email Apps

Hi all,
Due to the nature of my Job, I should have access to Email, as soon as someone emails me.
I use, Hotmail, Yahoo and MAINLY GMAIL.
I do not have any problem in installing a paid App. I can invest $25 for a decent App on the Android market. But I could not find one.
All the Push Email Apps, they say, that, they will do it every 15 Minutes, during the Peak Time.
But still, I have to open the Email each time and refresh it manually.
Since I have the Unlimited Data Plan with Verizon, I really don't bother much, about the Data usage, even it uses more Data.
Also I recently got the Zero Lemon 6300 mAh Battery from Amazon as well. It solved my battery problems.
My requirement:
If I get a Email, I should get a notification sound, Phone should Vibrate and it should be in the next Minute.
When I used to have iPhone4, my company Email used to reach my inbox in less than a Minute. But I don't know which app is the best one in the Android Market.
Any suggestions are highly appreciated.
But I can say, I tried lot of different Apps like, EmoZee Secure Push Email.
To some extent, the stock gmail app is better. But I want all of them in a single App, just like the iphone. But I don't know which app actually solves that purpose, with real time push for every 5 Minutes.
Thanks a lot guys and Peace.
sincerely
qzmpal.

Yes. I have tried Mail Droid and Emoze Secure Push Email.
After 2 -3 days of use, the speed with which the Emails are delivered are
Emoze Secure Push
Gmail Stock App
Mail Droid
This is my personal experience though. May be I might have missed some other options. But as far as I Know, I check thoroughly the options in these 3 Apps and I think, Emoze is the better one till now.
But I'm open for suggestions even on the Mail Droid as well. But I did not try K-9. I downloaded that and I'm using it right now. Lets see how this goes.
Any suggestions are highly appreciated.
Thank You.
I have been using K-9 mail for 2 years and it pushes correctly. If you feel adventurous you can always visit their D/L page and try the "beta" versions.
