Captivate vs Iphone 4 vs Nexus One - Captivate General

I was trying to help others in similr situations. But unfortunately the biased fanboys came to town to complain about the iphone being better in which I made no such claims. I happened to be in a situation where I have been doing extensive testing to determine which phone is best for me and tried to share. Nuff said. Mods please delete this useful, detailed, but not wanted post.

yeah it does...but not be an asshole, but was this thread really needed?
There is an iPhone vs. Captivate thread already here, and adding the nexus one is a nice touch but it could have been placed in the same thread.
I liked the post, I'm just all for keeping the forum clean and every day i check and there is another 30 threads all of them kinda similar...we need a mod (i'd do it) fast so that we can merge threads
EDIT: I just noticed you wrote the same EXACT thing in that thread...this thread is really useless...

Why is this being started AGAIN

Cons: No flash/light for camera or Video. No LED notifications. No front-facing camera. No cursory navigation (trackball or other software based cursor placement). Poor power button placement. Stuttering OS experience. Poor sound on speaker, tinny sounding.

Theres no need for the camera to have flash...its good enough as it is, led notifications it was good back in 2000, front facing camera errr theres only one us carrier that supports cripple quik video calls(sprint),trackballs, trackpads?? it has a touchscreen...use your fingers duh!, stuttering os? wtf i have had no lags what so ever, install launcher pro...poor speaker sound?? wtf do you want, a 1000w subwoffer?, tinny sounding? your insane i guess, the captivate has an onboard 3d sound card which deliver's exelent sound output/input.

You're right it was useful AND detailed - but you posted it twice. If you've ever been apart of ANY forum you know that people don't like double posts.
I don't see any comments about you thinking the iPhone is better, nor do I see any fanboys in this thread...all I see is a post made by you that has almost the same exact title as another post right before it in which you posted this same exact content.
THAT is the area of discontent amongst the forum users

Instead of trying to find info at the bottom or middle of a thread, I tried to put the info out there in the face. As much as I don't like clutter or stupid posts, I do like to find info. For every post that has info, there are thirty posts with ignorant comments. I was trying to help. But obviously those that can't see the truth, cant be helped.

That is the sentiment I was trying to convey.
Also the title promotes fanboyism and challanges other's perspectives which would start a war.

I guess replying to an existing post and creating a new thread are different in my eyes. I thought I was helping by bring the info up top. I saw no stickied posts. My bad. I don't post much here, so I see how the law of the land is (doesn't exist). Peace...

you can be as bitter and snide as you want, but the fact still remains that you were double posting and giving out pure opinion.
there are two threads already created, one comparing the facts of both phones and one with user impressions...
you posted your opinion fine. people who are looking for information should search for it, it does not take long, especially when the thread title is so descriptive. Also, the thread is so active that it is always near the top, it wouldn't take much to find your thoughts.
eventually the comparison will be stickied, but until then being one of the top 5 topics should be enough to help anyone who needs to find YOUR specific observations (many of which are not shared by the consenting public)
so goodbye, I'm sure no one will miss you here

Thanks

Quote Etiquette

I definitely spend more time reading in this forum than wriiting... usually on my Tilt. It's a great board with lots of contibutors, both big and small. Some people tend to post long replies (which is a good thing)... but one thing that becomes cumbersome is scrolling through all the quoted text just for a person to ask a one line question (which usually doesn't refer to the quoted text). The reason to quote is to refer to something the author said that is pertinent to your question or comment. In fact, if you can edit the quote to only the specific text you are referring demonstrates the ultimate in quoting skill. You see this often in Dutty's thread... God bless him. His ROMs are so wildly popular that the post count goes through the stratosphere in a matter of days. This makes it a pain in the arse to go back and find some tiny piece of information, partly because of the misquoting.
If you want to direct a comment towards an individual vice the collective, simply use the @ symbal. i.e. "@Dutty"
This is not a flame thread, as you may have noticed I didn't direct it at anyone. Just a request to make a high traffic board better. Thanks, I feel better... I'm going to go drink a beer. CYA
And BTW... please don't sticky this, we have enough of those already.

Sorry my meager attempt at humor after reading 1800+ posts in Dutty's latest. I even went back and cleaned on of mine up.
Now if you could just learn some thread etiquette....
In all seriousness, I understand everyone here gets their panties in a bunch when someone asks something off topic, but if you don't tolerate that sort of crap, then you won't have anyone but the same old hens sitting aroudn admiring your work.
If people hadn't put up with a little of my newbness, I wouldn't be rockin' a Dutty Tilt Touchflo rom on my phone and showing other new fans that you don't have to put up with ****ty AT&T roms!

Also cumbersome when there is a meaningless or non-existent title.
Maybe you or someone else could write up rules of titling.
I generally try to put in a title that is a brief abstract or summary of my post, or links the thought to the post I'm quoting.

Just got my Att Fuze what are some good programs to DL?

whats some good programs to install?
Um well....... what do you want to do? Are you going to flash a new ROM? What are you using the phone for? These are the questions I have for you. Without knowing that we can't tell you what to look for.
sigh.. just go to the site in my sig, tailored just for you.
And before you post on xda again please read the rules and guidelines first.
Click my sig, i got hundreds of cabs.
I know the OP asked when he could have searched...
But i am in the same boat and was also wondering what everyone is using. His question (and the replies with apps in the sigs) is going to make my life better too
So thanks OP for asking a disliked but useful question....

for the 10^10000000000th time.
well, i look at it this way...it doesn't hurt anyone here if someone ASKS....there is no gun to your head to answer it. only chime in if you feel like it. The OP's title is very explanatory of what he was asking so no one should have opened the thread unless they either wanted to reply or were curious of the responses given (like me). To be fair, i have never quite understood the strictness imposed which seems to cause so much frustration in (many) forums.
Signal to noise ratio, man. The fewer redundant threads, the fewer months it takes someone to get the same knowledge and tools from xda forums for their phone.
I had no problem answering his question (hell I spent countless hours designing a website to accommodate people in his shoes) and I'm sorry if I came off as bitter but the rules make sense to the people who made the rules and to me and especially to those reading the forums on their phones with a browser or RSS.
Think of Slashdot. There by default you wouldn't see things like this as they would get moderated below the default threshold. If you're so inclined, you can modify the threshold up or down or order the posts in various directions. That makes Slashdot a lot better than it used to be before they coded that. But wouldn't it be nice if XDA could continue to get away without needing the forum equivalent of that kind of system if people would just post properly and when newcomers do not that they are advised to check the rules (and, in this case, their questions get answered too)?
And yes, because of this thread a bunch of people are getting cabs they didn't have from various sigs and now that this is turning into a debate a lot more people will get cabs. But would you not agree now that we are both right? Or do you truly not mind the boards being flooded with the same questions the wiki and searching satisfies? Not to mention spam and people trying to sell their phones. Signal to noise ratio.

I think for some it's just a matter of frustration. I've been guilty of it myself, and got my hand slapped by the mods in Q&A for an inappropriate flame. Speaking for myself, I first joined a little over a year ago and read everything available. This allowed me to avoid asking questions that had already been answered. I'd hazard to guess that the "ask first and search later" approach is viewed by some as intellectually lazy. I can also see the other side that you point out. This site can be very intimidating and some people may just not know what to look for -- especially if they're new to WinMo. I've now adopted a no-flame approach (don't want to get slapped again). I'm certainly no expert, but I occasionally can provide an answer or suggestion, even if it's nothing other than providing a link to the appropriate thread. I figure it's the least I can do for all the great help I've received here.

Can't help but say that in my head with the Dude's voice from The Big Lebowski.
Well put! I trolled this board months before I got my Fuze on release day. After I got it, I finally registered at xda. Just now I flashed my phone with a NAFT's new ROM. Countless threads of information to go through for someone with tendencies of ADD its hard to take it all in a fast as I want to. Many saved bookmarked threads. Think this might be my 4th post. I wanted to take the easy/short cut and ask but all the information is there. Just had to search and read & read & read again.
There are many talented, smart & helpful people on the forum. This forum totally kick ass in all reality.
BTW d0ugie, website kicks ass! Helped me out tremendously 6 weeks ago.
Now off to search for may att stock ring tones I didn't backup before the flash.

@D0ugie
First off, i didn't think your reply was too negative. You just pointed out that people should search first and ask later, which i agree with. I think in my mind it's the level of grey that exists with the "search first" motto that is debatable. I have spent a LOT of time in some instances searching for a needle in a haystack, sometimes in fear of knowing that if i pose a new thread for a quick answer i might get flamed for it. And there are times when i asked before i probably should have (had one of those the other day) and felt like an idiot for it. And then there are the times where i was looking for something but maybe didn't even know it, and had someone else ask it and be like, wow that is exactly what i wanted to know. And then there are still the times where i asked a Q and wasn't sure if it was a good question and whether or not i'd even get a reply, and had a huge discussion evolve because of it and lots of people glad i did ask.
Obviously, the repeat of the same question over and over can make it harder to find the BEST answers, but sometimes i will search and not find that right thread and then someone points me to it and i am like, that just saved me SO much unnecessary searching, THANK YOU.
The bottom line though is i love this community and, in general, everyone here is amazing and so helpful and giving. I feel lucky to be a part of it and wish i was a better developer and had more to contribute.

Funny i was looking for the Dude trying to get a little Time of from XDA and accidentally used the Google XDA search. This was the only result.

I didn't know that until i accidentally searched for it.
Well for those in the Dark here's the Short Version:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RqtgfjkB6Pg
Please delete me when the fun's gotten out of it, but at least XDA should get back two search results from now on, on The Big Lebowksi
In two weeks:
http://www.google.com/custom?hl=en&...esult&cd=1&q=Noonski+the+big+lebowski&spell=1
Should give you at least one result on finding out my true identity.
A few posts deleted, that is already more then any of us would have wanted on a Forum meant to harbour information.
Don't Flame a man trying to show you the light of XDA, it attracts to much attention of Moderators even when they are trying not to.
If you go to my 4shared, you can find pretty much any application that will do whatever you want on your WinMo based phone.

Problem With Screen Timeouts on CM 4.2.11.1

I am having a problem with the screen timing out, and going black. This seems to happen regardless of whatever I am doing on the phone (texting, browing internet, etc) The touch recognition does not keep the display on, and the phone will go black right in the middle of my typing. the only way to keep the display on is press the menu button. Any advice? Its a clean install, just installed yesterday

@Chris....Have you rebooted your phone since you flashed the 4.2.11.1 upgrade? This happens to me every time I flash a ROM update for Cyanogen, but it is resolved after the first reboot. I would give that a shot.
@Shadow....Yet again a great example of why people are ditching XDA and moving on to other forums for their dev needs. Funny how number of posts somehow adds you to this elitist group of complainers.
@XDA....Can we please change the membership ratings? My proposal is:
Junior Member -1-50 posts
Member - 51-100 posts
Senior Member/Verified *****/I rule the world so you better know that prior to posting anything - 101+ posts
Feel free to pick one out of the 3 for the last category.....but I am reallying hoping for the second choice...cause it pretty much describes how most of your "Senior Members" act.
....And before I get flamed/suspended.....remember I said "most", not all.

Honestly, I don't think shadowch31 was out of line whatsoever. It's not being elitist to chastise others for not following simple rules. The OP is a selfish ass, who seems to be under the impression that this forum is dedicated to him and his problems alone. Like I always say, if everyone who had an issue with a ROM posted a new thread, this forum would be absolutely un-navigable. The CyanogenMod has nearly 10,000 posts. Assuming only half of those are issue-related, that would be 5,000 more threads scattered about this forum.
Maybe people aren't ditching XDA because others are putting them in their place. Maybe people are ditching XDA because of all the morons flooding the site with garbage. This is a development forum, not a personalized troubleshooting team for each user.
To the OP, stick to AndroidCommunity or a similar site. If you keep up this crap, you're not going to be welcome here for very long.
ironically most of the garbage on here is from ppl who flame lower ranking members. who gave you the authority to disrespect or even abate other members? Bottomline we ought to have more respect in here for all members. we all started as juniors...but besides that you are a loser if you waste your time arguing with people you don't even know anyway.

Oohhh a feisty one I see, makes it more enjoyable extinguishing your little flame there.
If this had not been his very first post (proving yet again why people should be forced to read the rules and learn what a search button is and it's function) and had it been posted in the correct thead which is ALWAYS on the front page here I would have answered happily. Also might help if this wasn't about the fifth post alone today that has been reported for being in the wrong place I MAY have been nicer.
Now as it happens the OP has held his hands up and said he posted in the wrong place and apologized which is fair enough and hopefully it will be removed and put into the right place where it is going to get the proper attention.

C'mon. I don't even have 50 posts here and I'll already tell you all that this isn't a board for making almost 100% of the thread a flame war. In fact, there's no board for that. Hopefully OP can get his/her answer and we'll all be good.
Even my post is irrelevant. Yay for contribution. :|
I love these threads, they are just funny to see internet fighting. At least the wrecking crew made people laugh and did it with style where even the op had a good time and joined in.................. I miss the good old days

[MODS]Thread Locking

hey guys when you decide to lock a thread, how about a heads up as to why?
Too often threads get locked and no explanation is given.
Thanks
In my opinion, there's not enough locking of the threads.
Feels like I'm in the movie "Groundhog's Day"
Over and over and over....of the same

It seems idiodic that there is a new thread every day "OmG FroYo TomMorroW, according to this guy I talked to"
I wonder if it would be more effective to lock each of the threads immediately, or just leave one and hope that those guys that would normally post those threads would read it first and relent

I completely agree with this. while it may seem annoying for some members especially the newer ones there are a couple of dozen "omg I talked to att/samsung and now have the inside scoop" as well as the ever annoying which rom is better post. These threads get to be bother some fast

I think this topic would have been addressed if it was PM'd to the mods, instead of making just another thread to clutter up the board.
Depending on the mod, they actually do let you know why the thread has been closed. I know Zelendel does that for a fact.
Hey guys I just thought I would stop in an say my part. If I close a thread and do not post in it then I am sorry if I thought that the reason is plain, I close threads if the question is answered in the thread and is no longer needed, If it has been talked about over and over. Lets leave the dead horse alone ok Example is one of my favs "where is gingerbread", "Best Rom", " I refuse to search for what I am looking for". These threads will be closed on sight.
We all know the rules and one of them is search before opening a new thread.
+1 to everything. We need some major house cleaning in here.
Ok I will clean up the threads over the next few days. Any threads that are not needed will be deleted and if anyone posted in those threads then your post count will be altered as the posts are deleted.
+100000000 ..Very annoying seeing the same questions asked over and over and over.. "i just rooted now what?" .."i spoke to VZW and"....."how much is the thunderbolt?"...noobs PLZ search.what ur looking for 1st or go to the discussions regarding ur phone..

Thank you.
Can you set some ground rules for acceptable threads? I know we have read before posting, but maybe if it was laid out what was acceptable and what was not, then we would have something to point at and say you made a boo boo.
Maybe make an announcement and ask for ideas from the community as to what the rules for our forum should be. You being senior mod still have final say, but at least we have input. Just my thoughts.

[Q] Pretty big design flaw with the wifi

Anyone else notice this? When you hold the phone in landscape, the wifi straight drops out? (Most notably when covering the power button end of the phone with the left hand.) Seems to me that having the antennae built into the back panel/battery cover was a wrong design choice.
Edit: And let me add that reception doesn't drop, just the wifi.
we both made a post about this at the same time. I'm having issues also. I didn't notice that it happens in landscape specifically. it happens all the time to me
Your post is a joke right? Or is this your very first time on the internet and you happened to randomly land on xda for your very first post ever; all the while managing to avoid the hundred of posts regarding the exact same thing?

It could be possible, chances are probably as good as getting struck my lightning, winning the lottery and seeing pigs fly all at the same time, but still entirely possible...
Didn't know this forum was full of wanna be mods. If you came him in here with the intention of just ****ting on me, then shame on you. If anything you could of just pointed me in the right direction, like a REAL mod would do, then let this topic die.

I'm am no such thing... I think perhaps you should first watch the Video titled:
'You are a NOOB on XDA-Developers'
before you post anything. This issue must have appeared 100s of times on this forum. It would be sensible to use the search feature in future to prevent the forum getting clogged up with the same old topics... I mean it is taking an age now to find anything which is new and worth reading on the sensation forums.
It is not my intention to cause harsh feelings towards other members. However, it's just sometimes easier to convey a point with a slight bit of sarcasm (a concept I know some folk find difficult to grasp) than doing what I am now and stating the obvious about the fact that you should search the forum before posting. IF your issue isn't already in the forum, or it is not particularly related, then you need to post a clear and decisive thread, detailing all of your issues. However I can assure you this has been posted many times in the past week or so and I'm getting sick and tired reading the same old thing!! I'm sorry if I upset you or dented your ego; you'll survive
I hope you continue to enjoy the forum, just as I intend to do myself
Thanks and again I'm sorry for portraying 'stick up my ' behaviour (perhaps a tad extreme response from yourself), just my way of communicating a message; which in future I'll bear in mind because I now know it can cause irrational responses from people, something which I personally do not aspire to cause.
Hope you enjoy the rest of your day.
Regards,
Hayden
p.s.
I have no intention of being a Mod - to much hassle. I would like to note that many Mods on this forum would have given a similar response that I just have - USE THE SEARCH, it's there for a reason!!
Well said hayden. he is right noobs. I think you should have read the forum rules first laid out by the mods. Read other threads. If your issuer isn't there then post and we will be more than happy to help

Back on track... I have the same issue as the op (putting my palm over the top of the phone with my fingers on the back causes my wifi signal to decrease) I noticied it before reading this thread because the wifi calling notification would randomly show up while connected to wifi

Hmmm... this may call for a Recall by HTC... in return for Unlocked Bootloader Sensation Replacements.
Mine will be delivered tomorrow so I cannot do any testing right now but by any chance is there a way to change the power setting on wifi? If it is in power saver mode or something similar it could be more susceptible to interference.
Different phones but my HD2 had some weird quirks on Wifi till I forced it to full power on wifi.
Might not help but its something to look at perhaps.
No problems on wi-fi, so far so good, after unlock it will be perfect.

Yea, 10332007 you nailed it... I went to settings > wifi settings > Menu > Advanced and turned on "Best wifi performance" and then it would only drop one bar. (previously dropped 3). battery sucker, but it does decrease the severity of the issue, besides I'd expect some drop in signal with my meaty paws in the way.

No real criticism intended, but I would like to point out a slight flaw in your argument. I am not what I would consider a noob, and I am searching for the very same answer.
Had you actually been nice enough to help this person, you would also help others that are searching for this information too. We all have to wade through a ton of false leads when trying to hunt this type of info down. I find there is quite a bit to sort through sometimes, and it is people that are kind enough to answer these questions (noob or not) that also help so many others.
It seems that this is the spirit in which this community was built upon, I see so many angry and irritable people around this forum these days... it is such a shame.
In this situation, you would not only have helped a noob, but you would have saved time for all the other folks that are trying to locate this info and read the title of this post.
I think he gets it now, guys.
This was his first time posting, relax. Hopefully from now on he'll use the search feature, but for now the least you can do is just help the guy out AND advise him about the search feature. Let's not scare away a new forum member.
Wish I could help you, but I am only getting my Sensation next week.
I don't have this problem at all. Have tried and tried to replicate it, but can't. Glad I don't have this problem.
