Yep. The US variants of the Galaxy S do Micro USB to HDMI out. Unfortunately, there are no cables available (yet) in order to have that kind of functionality. Samsung is planning to release that one.
we sell a USB to DVI /VGA ADAPTER for about $79. http://www.encore-usa.com/us/sites/default/files/product_file_datasheet/ENMUV-2_Spec_EN_1.pdf

wow that's really cheap?!
The Samsung one is $49 bucks (US) I think. Just wait I'm sure there will be a Chinese knock-off soon enough for pennys on the dollar.

So assuming this weren't back-ordered, it would work on the captivate to say... watch movies?
Someone has to try it and see how it works. The Composite on the Captivate (headphone jack) is mirroring of the entire device UI.
But some other devices that use HDMI only allow certain apps to output to it, like the built in Samsung movie player. I think this is for copyright reasons. I am not sure what copy protections are built in but HDCP would be needed to play back licenenced Hi-Def videos like Blueray format.
Your own videos / downloaded ones / ripped correctly bluerays, etc. should all play in Hi-Def okay. There are still unanswered questions, but it seems like this cable will allow movies to be played back w/o issue.
I am getting one as soon as a 3rd party one hits the streets as it will probably be cheaper.

Your post made me curious about it, so I did a bit of searching. It seems the only phone capable of it is international (I guess this means non-US) versions of the Samsung Galaxy S. Then there are some tablets with this ability, particularly from Archos. But phones, it looks like it's only the Galaxy S.
The reason this isn't more widespread is that if a modern phone will go for video out, it'll be HDMI.

You would need a extra pin in the headphone jack.. Beyond that it should be only software. But i have a fascinate and no one has found out how to enable it yet.

Why would you need an extra pin? There are more than enough in a standard plug, to carry a composite video signal.
Would just have to be a clever software package...

Pretty sure its hardwired through the headphone amp. Its a hardware thing.. Putting video through a headphone amp would not be desirable. Now, with a 5th pin for video (which my phone has) then yea. Should just take software. But no one has cracked it yet.

SGS i9000 has TV out on 3.5 jack you need the same 3.5 to RCA video cable as the one made by Nokia
i've used it before, quality is okay, it's RCA composite (think S-video quality in VHS), so don't expect much, it's not going to look like a USB to HDMI out quality

TL;Dr, experiments led to Revelation: only two signals minimum needed.
so I was being weird, and bored, and I actually have a headphone to RCA jack. so what do I do? I send audio through the video port, and I see that the audio actually does cause images on the screen to appear. they may be simple white and black lines, but yea. It still works. the only thing someone needs to do in terms of sending a video to a TV, is recording the screen, converting said screen frame-by-frame into the RCA video code, and then sending that through one of the headphone signals. (Either left or right) and then taking both left and right audio signals, converting them into a mono audio, and then sending it out to the other one. boom! done... I would do this myself, but I Don't have the app-making know-how.

Hi,
I've had the same problem. I've searched almost whole Internet and couldn't find any... Even on chinese stores price of HDMI adapter is huuuuge... I think that it's because of some kind of electronics inside of this adapter... So you have to find discount price or try to find and buy used one from someone...
Best Regards
BTW. I would like to ask present/past users of Samsung tablet. Does anyone have such adapter for sale?

Best price which I've seen in my country was arount 30 US $
brumovs 4.400
Thanks - and do they all need external power to work? I think the official Samsung one does?
UPDATE: OK, so I picked up the official Samsung HDTV adapter (EPL-3PHPBEGSTD) up for €30 in Madrid in El Corte Ingles. (Also saw it for about £20 from Expansys in the UK)
So this adapter only mirrors the tablet's screen - there is no way to put a movie/slide show on the external screen and browse the web at the same time on the tablet?
Also, when I play a YouTube video it automatically enlarges the video on the TV whilst keeping the YouTube page with a small video (in the corner of the tablet screen). However it looks like you can't browse for another video without losing the one you are playing. It is a shame if you can't treat the TV as a second screen as with a laptop

The way I do it is through DLNA / All Share but it requires a few things. If you have a movie downloaded in the tab, just open the app "all share", select the TV (your TV needs to support DLNA or at least be connected to a router that allows DLNA) and then you can stream the movie to the TV and do other things with the tab.
I don,t think it will work with the slides because all share only works with pictures, music and movies but never tried it.
Well, this is more of a curiosity question than a practical. I was wondering if it was possible to get my Xbox running on my Surface screen, considering my surface is just a computer with a screen, I've tried HDMI to HDMI Mini, but I didn't think that would work... and it didn't.
Like I said, I don't need the answer, but it would be nice knowing I could play on my Xbox on the go.

That's a Damn shame.
It's the same on all laptops. I've never yet seen a single one that could take HDMI in.
The only devices I have seen with HDMI in have been displays (of course) and video capture devices.
You can use a usb HDMI capture device as an input, bit latency on those things is sky high to the point that all games will be unplayable.
Otherwise. No computer to my knowledge has HDMI input abilities, including the surface.

Yes, it hardware. It like you cannot put 3.5mm microphone jack into 3.5mm headphone jack on many mp3 player and phone. It design to output port. Not input port. Except some device that combine output/input port into one.
Processors and graphics cards only ever have HDMI output. Never input. It would be an intensive task to record an HDMI input.
Now you could suggest that they rewire tye HDMI port directly to the screen, sadly the screen is not an HDMI screen on a laptop or tablet. Its usually LDVS or DSI, the former is more common. HDMI to LDVS adaptors exist but would add cost to the device and increase the amount of electronics you need to fit inside the shell of the laptop or tablet, your already space restricted in there.
Cheers everyone
Actually, you can connect your Xbox's HDMI into the Surface Pro, if you have an HD PVR, or any similar HDMI Capture Card.

Already mentioned capture devices. The latency on them (particularly USB ones) is just terrible. If your using a pass through capture card or hdmi splitter to play Xbox on the TV then the latency doesn't matter, but trust me, trying to play on your computer screen via a capture device is so bad that you might as well not play in the first place.

I can confirm that 100% as I use a HDMI capture card on my desktop PC and it has a 50ms latency which is terrible, but I use it to record my Black Ops 2 videos from the in-game Vault so it's not a problem to me as I don't use it to directly play on it. But if I have such a huge latency, imagine that with a USB capture card like the Hauppauge HD-PVR ! It'd just be unplayable.

I have an HDMI Capture Card via USB, and I know they're not meant to play on a Computer Screen.
Why should you even do that (unless you're without a TV, of course)?

Try emulating a 3.5ghz triple core powerPC CPU on your 1.7ghz dual core surface pro and then come back and ask that question again
Hell, all those guys moaning about no backwards compatibility for the xbox one, there is a reason for no backwards compatibility. 360 uses PowerPC, one uses x86. Emulation will be needed. General rule, to emulate platform A on platform B, platform B must be 10 times more powerful than platform A. Its a general rule, but the xbox one does not meet that requirement yet is way more powerful than the surface is.
The xbox live indie games use XNA and .NET though. No backwards compatibility for them is an absolute joke. It would be relatively trivial for a corporation such as microsoft to have .NET running on the one (infact I would hazard a guess that it will be), why the hell dont they let the indige games carry on over???? But now I am getting off topic.
End conclusion, no Xbox > surface is really possible unless you are screen capturing on a surface pro which would still be an undesirable situation for playing games, only recording.
To be fair he might have meant the original Xbox, which at 500MHz single-core x86 is probably too computationally intensive for the Surface RT (beacuse of the need to emulate x86) but might be possible even so, and would be trivial for the Pro. However, Microsoft does not generally approve of such emulators.
Yeah, original Xbox could well draw on existing hardware but no one has had much success as of yet which is a shame.

Can't find much of anything for USB-C headphones yet. I have a bluetooth set (actually a couple) but don't always bring them or charge them. Part of that is b/c I haven't had to yet. I suspect I'll eventually just keep them with me more often and charge them more regularly - but we're not there yet.
I found these JBL ones through HTC that have some potential. I usually like JBL stuff and these are the style that I like (with the little wing to keep it in place). They're marked down a LOT right now to $80 at HTC.com (from $200, also seen them at $150). I just placed an order to give them a try - can't really be sure they're 100% compatible yet, but I think they're worth a shot. I also haven't really found them sold at any other reputable places online (there's also an Apple Lightning version too).

Ya, I remember reading somewhere that HTC's stuff isn't necessarily compatible with other USB C phones - which is dumb.
I just ordered those from HTC as well...seriously hope they're compatible, but I guess we'll see. I'd really prefer to never pull this dongle out of the box haha, but at this point I'm just happy to have that box in my possession after that whole launch/shipping fiasco
I tried pumping 1More for some info to see if they had any plans of make the quad driver (or even the triple driver) earbuds with USB C, since they already make it with that dopey lightning connection...and the response I received was that they may look into if some bigger companies begin using USB C...guess Google and others aren't quite big enough for them
Just tried my pair of usb Jbl headphones with the essential and I confirm it works.

Headphones are here! As mentioned, yes, they do work fine. I'd give them a 6/10, I guess.
I didn't even realize these are active noise canceling too. That's really not something I even care about but I guess nice to have? Generally I find that most in-ear buds cancel enough noise on their own for my needs. The ANC just isn't really something I'd seek out and pay extra for.
Anyway - I like the headphones. The buds are BIG compared to others I've had. Like I think I already mentioned, I like the wings with any of my in-ear buds to fit better and stay in place. And just like any others, these come with various sizes of both the in-ear portion and the wings.
Sound isn't bad. There's a JBL app for them where you can setup your own EQ and control the noise cancelation (you can also do that from the inline remote). I don't really notice a difference in the settings, but maybe I'll play with that more next time I'm flying (later this year). Since they are active noise canceling, they will draw power from your phone (and there's a permission popup when you first connect them).
Biggest complaint is that they are not loud enough. I wish it had maybe 2 or 3 more clicks of volume than it does. Maybe I won't care as much with the noise canceling, but I don't want to feel like I have to max them every time.
I also want to try this Xiaomi set: http://c.mi.com/thread-226064-1-1.html
These may have compatibility problems like the HTCs though. I have a set of regular Xiaomi in-ear buds and really like them (comfort and sound quality). I'd like to believe these would be similar.

That's unfortunate for those going the dongle route.
Were the ones you tried random "off" brand dongles that were just cheap? Or were they any sort of reputable brand?
Joseche and iTParts are the brands. I bought two of each and tested them all. They claim Moto Z support. Since it was Amazon, I send them back, no harm but I haven't found a dongle that works, other then the one that shipped with the phone.

Same experience here. I emailed Essential to purchase more adapters (I like to keep them around the house, in the car, on my keychain, etc.) and they informed me that they do not sell them at this time. Bummer, so I went to Amazon and bought two of the Motorola-branded ones and of course, they don't work.
I think if I understand correctly, it has to do with Legacy USB audio. Some adapters have the DAC/amp in the dongle (which is what we apparently need on the Essential) and some route legacy audio through the USB-C port (like Motorola). So now I don't know where to turn.
Has anyone tried the HTC headphone adapter? If their USB-C headphones work on the Essential, then perhaps their dongle does as well. I guess it's worth another $20 gamble to see. Maybe it will even improve the audio

Has anyone tried the Libratone Q Adapt USB-C Earphones sold by google they are also $150
I just purchased the Fiio BRT1 bluetooth adapter which has a high quality DAC in it (AK4376). Might be the way to go to charge and use headphones at same time without the dual-dongle approach. It should come today. Initial reviews for it seem positive. I have other AK-series DACs on other devices and really like them, so hopefully Fiio implements it well in this unit.
I think the best route though is to get a USB portable DAC/Amp unit and a usb-c otg cable for best sound quality -then you can use whatever headphones you want.
