I was wondering if it was possible to un-root a G1. I'm honestly having the hardest time with it. I've downgraded to RC29 but when trying to add "RC33: (md5: f24b6c237775147cb4bc42efc2393973)" it doesn't want to add when ... I followed the steps on the step by step of adding it and it always hangs up and wont add when in recovery mode while pressing Alt-S to apply the update.
-Could this be a problem because for some reason while i was putting in the info into Telnet it hung up at the recovery.img portion. Sorry new about moding phones... Cars i know phones i don't
I'm in the LA area if anyone else is and is willing to on there free time show me how i keep screwing up. Thanks
All you gotta do is reflash the DREAIMG.NBH file onto your G1 and it'll update by itself, which means you'll be back to stock.
Edit: Are you by any chance unzipping the file? If you are, you have to leave it unzipped and just rename to update.zip in the SD card.

no i'm leaving it update.zip like the set by step said. And how do i refresh it? Im on yahoo messenger by the same name on here if your on this to help me. Thank You
-i rather keep it rooted and not have to revert to tmo's software but 4 hours and i feel like a total moron
Why would you want to unroot your phone? But if you really want to then just flash back to RC29 then wait for the phone to get the OTA updates.
I don't want to unroot but im unable to add 1.5 like i intended on doing. So right now im stuck with rc 29 and not cuppycake like i want. I wanted to re-up back to 33 like it said in the posting i was using as step by step and it wont allow me to update
Questions on Android 1.5 and rooting
Some advice will be appreciated!
I just got my G1 a few days a go I was reading from the Official t-mobile web site that the up-grade for android will be out randomly to customers and their expecting that all of us customers will have it by the end of May
Now should I go thru all the work of rooting my G1 and getting cupcake or just wait for the upgrade?
Is there a difference between the two of them?
In the upgrade to 1.5 I don’t see or read anything about the apps getting install and running from the memory card does anyone about this?
Thanks in advance!

It all depends... If youre ONLY rooting to get cupcake, I would just say wait. See this link for some reasons why you would want to root and step by step instructions:

You can render your phone useless however while doing this. So BE CAREFUL... Youve been warned!
how to unroot my g1
So I rooted my phone and installed JF1.5 and my SD card is now acting a bit weird, and I want to undo the root and mod so I can go back to factory. How do I do this? Is this even possible now?
Thanks
yes, just flash an original RC33 firmware update... use search next time.
i got ya dude

Interesting root problem
Hey guys, been playing in a cupcake irc channel, while we are all waiting for ota cupcake, helping half a dozen or so people root, and i came across one that i figured i'd post here, and see if anyone has any ideas. Obviously i don't have his phone in hand, so i can't be 100% sure that he isn't flubbing a step, but he seems compitent enough to follow simple instructions. He has a stock g1 pvt board with an 8 gig transcend class 6 sdcard, we have formatted this card many times, we get through the nbh file, installs fine, telnetd steps no problem, put the update.zip on the sd card and boot into the bootlader, and everything goes hey wire, it cant find nor install the update.zip, we have redownloaded different spl's to try, triple verified the files weren't named update.zip.zip. the only odd thing i found about his phone, was in one of the threads on here, people were checking the output of the mount command, and for some reason for his sd card his output is /dev/block/mmcblk0p5 /sdcard vfat rw,dirsync,nosuid,nodev,noexec,uid=1000,gid=1000,fmask=0711,dmask=0700,codepage=cp437,iocharset=iso8859-1,utf8 0 0 where everyone esles is p0 or p1 i cant quite remember. anyhow any ideas or suggestions would be great and no he does not have another sdcard at the moment for us to get it done with
Thanks in advance
ps this is his output form the boot loader
The top says:
Android system recovery utility
using test keys
e:cant open /cache/recovery/command
then when I hit alt+s
Installing from sdcard...
Finding update package...
E:Cant mount /dev/block/mmcblk0 p1 (or /dev/block/mmcblk0)
(Invalid arguement)
E:Cant mount sdcard:update.zip
installation aborted
should be something simple like editing fstab or mount.conf or useing a symlink right, can anyone help me with the commands searching left and right here over edge is killing me
wat is the whole output of the mount command?

I just manually updated my phone to the new cupcake 1.5 US version. I would like to root my phone but don't I have to wait until the modify version comes out? Or can I root right now by downgrading and then manually upgrading to stock cupcake again? Will upgrading with the stock cupcake update wipe out the root?

So, I've been tooling around with making more alterations to Drizzy's excellent superlight rom for my own purposes. Now, I've had to regenerate the manifest.mf etc (which I've not had to do before) because I moved some files around. This completed fine using testsign.jar. Now when I try to flash my new update I get the following error:
E:Can't symlink /system/xbin/[
E:Failure at line 58:
symlink /sbin/busybox SYSTEM:xbin/[
Installation aborted
according to a search this is due to the SPL on my phone?
so, a couple of questions:
why has this just started happening? Something to do with the keys used to sign the update?
what do I need to do to fix it? I'm currently using "recovery-RAv1.2.0G.img"...do I need to change this?
its not the bracket [ that is causing the error?
Not making myself sound thick but do you need engineering spl if you dont have it?
hmm, I assume that's the problem... the only thing I don't understand is why I've never needed the engineering spl before? I've flashed about a dozen different roms without needing it, what have I done to this rom to make it require the engineering SPL?
I don't know if I am write in the right place, but I can not find where else I can do it...
My problem is that by a mistake I format system on my HTC Desire, and now I can not do anything, when I press the button to start, just appear HTC on white screen...that's all,and I can not do anything with fastboot, and all the other things...

Try to install correct usb drivers, maybe it gets recognized then.
Try this
to get correct usb drivers.
Nothing yet
I do appreciate mate that you want to help me,but nothing happends...I did what you told me and still doesn't recognice my device.
I went to Advanced and Debugging Menu, and I press Report error, and come this:
"ClockworkMod Recovery v2.5.051
Couldn't open directory.
No files found.
/tmp/recovery.log was copied to /sdcard/clockworkmod/recovery.log.Please open ROM Manager to report the issue."
Thats it...but I do not know how to do it...
I don't know if thats the right thing to do with this phone...
When I connect my HTC to my PC,on HTC Sync appear: "No device connected."
But I can access my sdcard,I don't know how,but I can access everything from sdcard, but that's it....This phone give me a lot of headache. I don't know if anyone of you had this problem, and I don't know anymore what to do with this phone.
Hmmm one question
I am just asking...cause I do not have any Ideea about this phone how works...
I selected Apply sdcard:update.zip
and then appear following words:
"Confirm install?
THIS CAN NOT BE UNDONE.
-NO
-NO
-NO
-NO
-NO
-NO
-NO
-Yes - Install /sdcard/update.zip
-NO
-NO
-NO
-+++++Go Back+++++ "
So I select Yes - Install ...bla bla...and appear this:
"--Install from sdcard...
Finding update package...
Opening update package...
E:Can't open /sdcard/update.zip
(No such file or directory)
Installation aborted."
So what I think is that the update.zip doesn't exist...
And my question is,do I have any chance to get it from some where else, from the web,or I don't know...and copy it to my sd card and then to try to install it????
Maybe is a silly question, but I repeat I am lorry driver I have no Ideea about phones..
Please let me know if anyone of you have any ideea what to do with this phone.
Thank you.

Hi all,
Firstly let me start by letting you all know myself and a mate have spent the last twelve hours searching forum and thread after forum and thread to try and resolve this. And although we have some success stories non of them are on our level, we just simply do not understand them.
So back to the beginning, I too like most Desire owners was sick of the Low Space message when I only had around 17 Apps downloaded so I looked into this Rooting and Rom malarky, my mate did his desire with ease and no problems, but mine is a different story.
I started with the root which worked fine I did the USB Drivers and then flashed with unrevoked3, I backed up my phone with Titanium Backup.
My mate then using the exact same ROM Cyanogen*Mod that he used on his phone tried to add it to mine but the installation kept abort with -
ClockworkMod Recovery v2.5.07
E:Can't find MISC:
E:Can't mount CACHE:recovery/command
E:Can't find MISC:
E:Can't mount CACHE:recovery/log
E:Can't find MISC:
Errors, now our research has found that this is due to my phone being newer and having erase size 40000 device.
We have also read that using amonRA 2.0.0 or 2.0.1 or AlphaRev 1.8 can bypass this but we do not understand how to do it.
So could I pleeeeeease ask one of you to try and explain or talk me through it step by step from the very start in the most simplest of idiot talk known to man !!!
Many many many thanks in advance
Hello Everyone
its almost a year since I got this problem and after all this time I still couldnt find a solution to it and I hope this description of it will end this once and for all.
Problem: The device has a memory of a certain day. Everytime I work with it, I remove some files and apps and install new ones. But next time i start the tablet the new ones are gone and the old ones are returned and smiling at me!
Things I have done: --Trying Not to get Insane-- I tried to flash device with different ROMS and Kernels even the stock ones. but even after a successfull rom installation, device gets back to its certain day ROM and memory!
Cause: After taking it to soooo many repair centers, finally one of them told me it was caused by a software called "Prey", This software is for finding your lost Android/Ios device, it has a feature called "Prevent uninstallations" which makes it unable to uninstall. Now that i try, I can uninstall it with my previous username/password but everything is the same after one restart....
gosh that was the story guys. In last year, good people of XDA tried to help me but I did not have the proper info, you can follow the conversations here
still any help is appreciated.
PS: Everytime I choose to wipe data/factory reset the device, get this message;
cant mount /cache/recovery/command
cant mount /cache/recovery/log
cant open /cache/recovery/log
cant mount /cache/recovery/last_log
cant open /cache/recovery/last_log
