Frozen Memory Problem Caused By Prey(Phone Finding Software) - Xoom Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello Everyone
its almost a year since I got this problem and after all this time I still couldnt find a solution to it and I hope this description of it will end this once and for all.
Problem: The device has a memory of a certain day. Everytime I work with it, I remove some files and apps and install new ones. But next time i start the tablet the new ones are gone and the old ones are returned and smiling at me!
Things I have done: --Trying Not to get Insane-- I tried to flash device with different ROMS and Kernels even the stock ones. but even after a successfull rom installation, device gets back to its certain day ROM and memory!
Cause: After taking it to soooo many repair centers, finally one of them told me it was caused by a software called "Prey", This software is for finding your lost Android/Ios device, it has a feature called "Prevent uninstallations" which makes it unable to uninstall. Now that i try, I can uninstall it with my previous username/password but everything is the same after one restart....
gosh that was the story guys. In last year, good people of XDA tried to help me but I did not have the proper info, you can follow the conversations here
still any help is appreciated.
PS: Everytime I choose to wipe data/factory reset the device, get this message;
cant mount /cache/recovery/command
cant mount /cache/recovery/log
cant open /cache/recovery/log
cant mount /cache/recovery/last_log
cant open /cache/recovery/last_log

[Q] HTC Desire Can't find Misc error

Hi all,
Firstly let me start by letting you all know myself and a mate have spent the last twelve hours searching forum and thread after forum and thread to try and resolve this. And although we have some success stories non of them are on our level, we just simply do not understand them.
So back to the beginning, I too like most Desire owners was sick of the Low Space message when I only had around 17 Apps downloaded so I looked into this Rooting and Rom malarky, my mate did his desire with ease and no problems, but mine is a different story.
I started with the root which worked fine I did the USB Drivers and then flashed with unrevoked3, I backed up my phone with Titanium Backup.
My mate then using the exact same ROM Cyanogen*Mod that he used on his phone tried to add it to mine but the installation kept abort with -
ClockworkMod Recovery v2.5.07
E:Can't find MISC:
E:Can't mount CACHE:recovery/command
E:Can't find MISC:
E:Can't mount CACHE:recovery/log
E:Can't find MISC:
Errors, now our research has found that this is due to my phone being newer and having erase size 40000 device.
We have also read that using amonRA 2.0.0 or 2.0.1 or AlphaRev 1.8 can bypass this but we do not understand how to do it.
So could I pleeeeeease ask one of you to try and explain or talk me through it step by step from the very start in the most simplest of idiot talk known to man !!!
Many many many thanks in advance

Possible eMMC fix

Now the usual way we know we have an eMMC problem is that we get:
E:Can’t mount /cache/recovery/command
E:Can’t mount /cache/recovery/log
E:Can’t open /cache/recovery/log
E:Can’t mount /cache/recovery/last_log
E:Can’t open /cache/recovery/last_log
appearing as a debug message, this is actually the full “cache” partition being corrupted. Obviously the majority of rom chefs have run into this problem many times and myself included I have seen that message on more than one occasion over different handsets.
Usually there isn’t a fix for any error like that, once the cache partition is corrupted you really cannot recover from that, it is a catastrophic failure. The only way I have been able to fix this a couple of times and that was by immediately removing the battery and letting it sit for a couple of minutes before putting the battery back in.
Then if you boot directly into the boot loader and hit into recovery mode.
Now if you haven’t received any major errors you cahce partition should now be formatted as ext3, so if you cycle through the menus and format it to ext4.
Do a full wipe of everything, including factory reset, davlik cache and battery stats
Flash the rom of your choice again (now make sure it is the correct rom for the phone) and hope for the best that it works.
Now hopefully that potentially can resolve your problems, if not then you will probably have a serious eMMC problem and potentially will have bricked your phone.
I will say this method has worked 9 out of 10 times with me and I still have these notes saved for the next time it occurs.
Key things to remember, always track changes in the rom – see if there is a good user base and check them against other more popular roms to see the differences and benefits if there are any.
I take no credits for this, all credits goes to unknown
I'll keep this in mind if mine ever goes bad.
Though, I do have to say though my first reaction to noticing a bad EMMC chip is to try restarting. I can't imagine myself seeing it, doing a battery pull, then seeing what the deal is. I'm less prepared than you I guess haha
I can say this didn't work me at all. I had that exact failure before last year, pulled the battery an let it sit, didn't do a single thing. Not for me at least.
I also highly doubt a battery pull will fix a busted emmc, just doesn't seem correct in my eyes.
If I helped, give thanks, if you please.

A: there are two things that cause this. both have VERY similar symptoms. the first is because of the failed eMMC chip (refer to eMMC chip section), and the second is because the recovery got messed up, probably because you've been switching between a lot of EXT3 and EXT4 roms.

the issue that your OP fixes is the corrupted recovery.. that can easily be fixed by flashing a new recovery. as of now, there is no known way to fix the failed eMMC issue, unless you switch out the whole board. eMMC chip is hardware, not software related. sorry to be "that guy" once again...
however, i do appreciate you trying. most people just give up...
yea... what ^ that guy.. said

Samsung Galaxy i9000 cannot flash

Hi. Ok...long story short. Its not bricked. I can use it. Using it currently as a media player stripped of all non-essential system apps. Or so I thought.
Semaphore_2.5.0b
DarkyROM v10.4.2 XWJW1
Firmware 2.3.6
I uninstalled some apps. Nothing system critical or so I thought. The following errors are now happening:
1. Whenever I enable wireless or launch Play Store I get the Google Services Framework gapps has stopped unexpectedly error....a few times then it stops coming up.
2. My Windows 7 64bit says "USB Device not recognised"
3. Device Manager reports the device has an error
4. Unable to install drivers from anywhere, Windows says I already have the most upto date driver - probably from previous installs
5. Odin does not see the phone when connected even when its in Download Mode
6. Rebooting to CWM v5.0.2.7 gives the following list of errors:
E:failed to open /etc/recovery.fstab (No such file or directory)
E:unknown volume for path [/cache/recovery/command]
E:Can't mount /cache/recovery/command
E:unknown volume for path [/cache/recovery/log]
E:Can't mount /cache/recovery/log
E:unknown volume for path [/cache/recovery/last_log]
E:Can't mount /cache/recovery/last_log
E:Can't open /cache/recovery/last_log
E:unknown volume for path [/cache/recovery/command]
7. I can't Wipe or Factory Reset or any of those things because I get similar errors to the above, i.e. can't open, or can't mount, or unknown volume...etc
8. I can't install a zip from the SD Card because it won't mount the SD Card.
9. I can't mount the SD Card - it just returns to the main CWM screen and lists the above errors again.
I have exhausted my search on the internet. You guys are my last hope of redemption. So I'm just praying that someone out there has an answer and takes pity on my poor condemned soul before the flames get any higher!

Wouldn't the problem be fixed by attempting to install the rom via odin? I know you said it doesn't show up, my thoughts are that you should make sure you have the updated samsung kies drivers installed.
If that didn't I might consider updating CWMR and then reflashing?
Reflash gapps and wipe all data in cwm lol you should have flashed if you didn't know what you were doing

Well that was a really really really unhelpful reply. Thank you though.
You might have noticed I can't connect the phone to Odin because Windows is not recognising the device and if you read my post you'd see I already tried reinstalling the drivers which are upto date as far as Windows is concerned.
Thanks though.

Brilliant. Very insightful. Maybe you shouldn't be using these forums if you can't provide support or at least a semblance of help instead of criticism and a holier than thou attitude. I'm assuming you're perfect.
I didn't think any of the apps were system critical. And I made that assumption as an ex-developer with over 15 years experience of low level assembler, C++ and Java development.
If you'd read my post properly you'd notice I can't flash or wipe.
But thanks though. It's nice to know people like you are still plaguing the forums.

[Completed] How to reset my HTC One Max

I am a total newbie to Android modifications, and tried to find a way of specifying custom notifications on my HTC One Max. I have later found the application Ringdroid that fixes everything that I needed, but before I did that, I believed that I had to root the phone to achieve this. So, I read a lot of stuff, downloaded a lot of files, messed with adb, clockworkmod, rumrunner etc. without really knowing what I was doing, and in the end gave up, since it didn't look like I managed to root the phone properly after all. But, anyway, I understood that something had changed, since a couple of applications were missing. Anyway, the phone has worked fine since then, until recently, when I got a notice that software update 4.13.401.7, containing Android 5.0 Lollipop, and various other stuff, was ready for installation. So, I downloaded the update, and told it to install. The phone reboots, and then I get the following message:
CWM-based Recovery v6.0.5.1
E: Invalid command argument
E: Invalid command argument
Finding update package...
E: unknown volume for path [INTERNALSDCARD:0/Do

401.1_release_4360116ezjvoz69qm8rzky.zip
Installation aborted.
Rebooting...
Is there a way of letting me a) reset my phone to the default settings, letting me do this upgrade? or b), do this upgrade without resetting it?

"Error: Failed to mount /data (invalid argument)" but phone is working fine

Hey guys, I just want to share this experience. My phone is Samsung Galaxy J7 (2016). It runs Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow. Yesterday I decided to conduct a "Wipe cache partition" on my phone after installing and uninstalling lots of apps from Play Store to at least get rid of any temporary files they might have left.
I went into recovery mode and selected "Wipe cache partition" and then after it said success, I selected "Reboot system now". Then it showed "Verifying DMVerity Hash Tree..." (I don't know what that means) for at least 5 seconds and then an error text appeared. At first I was unable to take note of it because my phone rebooted immediately but I knew it was an error since the text was colored RED.
So I decided to do a wipe again and did the same procedure. This time I carefully paid attention to the error text. It only showed for maybe 1 or 2 seconds before my phone rebooted. It read "Error: Failed to mount /data (invalid argument)" or something like that. I observed my phone. Used it like I normally would and I could find no problem with it. And that is the problem now. Why would it say error when my device is fully functioning? It's very disturbing. Like some problem is lurking in the darkness waiting for it to unveil itself.
I searched the internet for problems related with "Error: Failed to mount /data (invalid argument)" and most, if not all of them, has something to do with phones stuck at boot logo.
Can you please help me? Get this worry of mine out of my mind. I have this OCD thing when it comes to personal items. Sorry for the long thread. Thank you very much and have a Happy New Year everyone.
