Samsung Captivate - How To Videos - Captivate General

Hey everyone! I am pretty new here to XDA, registering account-wise, i have always followed everyone's awesome knowledge from here.
Well I hope to bring some good exposure and knowledge to help contribute to the xda cause. I have been recording How To videos on things I have found from all the great work you guys have done from the forums.
I try to explain things simply to non-technical people and make it somewhat easy. These first couple of videos might be a little rough, but this is my first attempt at doing video-tutorials.
Anyways I would appreciate any feedback from you guys. I also give credit where credit is due, i have linked to the original source of the thread if I used anyone's specific method.
Would anyone like me to do a video for anything else? I have a couple more ideas such as how to put the droidx multitouch keyboard on, installing samsung kies software/drivers and also how to remove the AT&T bloatware.
take care everyone and keep up the awesome work!!!
youtube.com/johnnyzappone

i would like to see how to get rid of all the bloatware,,also if you get a good camcorder im sure it would be appreciated by all

Another video tutorial that would be neat (if ironic) would be one over the camera's features. There are so many its over whelming on how to use them all to your advantage.

a new keyboard

i was looking though the touch wiz sys dump and i liked the keyboard so i put it in an update format. Just flash it, i gurantee youll like it. If not just remove it. I included the lwp as well that were posted earlier the lwp from it too, they work great on the phone though, I need someone to test it for me, cus swype is a pain to remove w/o wiping, and i already have all this on my phone. you just need to flash it like a rom. It contains 4lwp and 1keyboard app and their libs...dl the new lwp and kb HERE
Any chance of just getting the KB?

no time, sorry. you can rip them out and just install though, just make sure you take the lib files that go with them in your libs folder and the apps in your sys/app or data/app folder.

thanks for testing it and the quick feedback. i stated that it included the lwps in the op. they are from the new touch wiz dump. Ill check to see whats up with swype, just figured id throw it out there for those that didnt see this stuff yet....also, did you remove your old swype completely? or did you not have it? cus its VERY hard to get rid of.....just wondering so i can fix if something wrong.

sorry about that, and thanks.ok, soon as i get home ill post a link to a really sweet htc skinned swype mod. i use the red one in my newest rom, but the green one is slick too. im going to hang out for a little bit, when i get back ill put it up, and just take it out of the other one and ill mess with it, since its a full version.....
Let me see if I can accurately decipher this thread:
You saw something you liked, but didn't test it because its too much work to uninstall what you already have but that's ok because you already have it installed so you need someone else to take a blind leap of faith and install something you "gurantee" they'll like but if they don't that's ok too because they can just uninstall it (which really they can't do easily) but if you want to see what it is in the first place tough luck because you're out and about and have no time to post a screenshot for your own quasi-release?
If I were Canadian, I'd add "Eh?" at the end of that.
I strongly recommend that if you want to be taken seriously, you put a little more thought into your release posts. I applaud you for taking the time to share with the community, but frivolous posting of root-level patches without some form of quality control on your part could lead to a dangerous precedent of buggy and/or malicious code being introduced in the same channels.
I know you probably have the communities best interest at heart, but holding yourself to a higher standard keeps the bar high for the rest of those issuing releases to demonstrate an aptitude for solid documentation so people know precisely what to expect from dedicated contributors.
Good Luck!

Do you really think i need YOU or ANYONE else to take ME seriously? my work speaks for itself, i could care less what you think of me, but just dont be disrespectful or snotty about it when you obviously have no clue as to what i do, if you say " which really they can't do easily" when you are speaking about removing a single app.I take it youve never been to dev? cus thats what ive been doing for the past 3 days, is working on my last rom. SERIOUSLY, why whould you make it 2wice as bad by requoting the entire post in ITALICS? GOOD JOB. PLEASE try to remain on topic, this is a thread about a kb and the touch wiz lwp i put together in one update for everyones convenience, not about my choice of font and color. If we were not allowed the choice we would not have it available to us.
If you took a moment to actually absorb what I posted, you would recognize I did not besmirch your contributions, but was offering a point of constructive criticism.
Regardless of the quality or lack thereof of your "releases", your posts are plagued with you getting into flame wars with people because you feel like you have to defend yourself against any form of critique you don't agree with.
But hey, if you have five people who think your work is on par with some of those that I have donated to, by all means cater to that denominator. I'll gladly keep my feedback to myself and save it for someone who can handle dialogue with a little more class.

[REQ] Input for new video. Tell me what YOU want!

Greetings All!
With the onslaught of questions and concerns that have been directed at me, I have decided that there may be a few items that would need to be addressed in an additional video. I am looking for input from you, my viewers, as to what you would like me to cover.
I have already decided that I am going to go over the installation of khalpower's new v2 and I will step through the usability and features of it. I will also discuss the differences between the versions out there, and what patches are. I can discuss the differences between apps2sd, link2sd, and all of that stuff. I will also probably give me own opinions as to what everyone SHOULD be running, and what I deem to be the perfect setup.
I encourage you to speak up in this thread and tell me what you need from a new video. Obviously, YouTube restricts me to 15 minutes per video, so if I need to, I can always do more than one. I was originally going to make a new video tomorrow, but I decided that I would give the XDA community a chance to give me your thoughts first.
Try to be coherent, and if something has already been requested, request it anyway. The more requests for a specific subject, the more likely it will be covered.
With your input, and my mad editing skills, I hope to help as many of you as possible with this new series of video.
Let the requests begin!

Setup of apps2ext or link2sd
pleeease explain the setup for the khalpowers apps2sd, there have been so many versions and setups directions. The choices don't help either, this will hopefully make everything clear for us noobs! your 8 min tutorial and instructions helped me start out. So thanks again for all your hard work sometimes we forget how hard it is to figure things out the first time, now looking back, it seems to be a breeze.

Yeah, to this day, I'm still on stock 2.1 with App2SD. It's more of a MOTOROLA Y U LOCK BOOTLOADER issue for me.
Links2sd
your videos have been great.
A video walkthrough of how to activate links2sd would be superb. - conflicting information out there has me confused
....and like you said the differences between links2sd, apps2sd.. apps2ext etc... like which one is faster/ your recommendations
this may not be relevant or urgent but if it is...(if this still hasn't been fixed yet) sorting out the keyboard dictionary, my english version 2.1 one was brilliant but since 2.2 versions auto-correct has been hopeless
Much appreciated. your first videos helped a noob (me) improve his phone
Right now I'd like to see a clear tutorial for installing Khal's ROM (whatever version is current) and his honeycomb theme for that, since those are the things I'd like to do (though I may have already figured it out by the time you get the vid up) ).
EDIT:
Oh and if you could clear up if ROMs like Khal's can be installed over things like Mioze7ae's patch (currently running Dexter's 1.3 with Mioze7ae's patch .2) with no issue, that would be fantastic.
Thanks, it's great to have people like you on this forum.
How I do apply theme? I'm a bit confused. That video would be nice for beginners for me. Cheers!

Putting Things back as Was ..
REV -
I would like to see a video where we can back up a phone with all its content before say applying a new custom ROM. Then if the ROM doesnt work we can put the phone back to as it was. THis may then give a bit of security to people wishing to flash about etc knowing that they can put all back as was.
thanks

i just realised your previous videos on using gparted etc has enough information for those wanting to use link2sd on khals Rom. So all one would have to do is follow those directions- add a 'Link2sd' folder instead of an 'apps' folder and flash the Rom like in your dexter videos.
Tell me if i'm missing any key steps so i'l wait for your video!
cheers

I just wanted to thank you, first of all. Your videos have been great for me since I am also a Cincinnati Bell customer. I loved my first smartphone (BB Curve) for the email and flexibility it gave me as a small business owner, but Cincy Bell was no longer offering a large screen BB and I was having trouble reading email and web on the small Curve screen, so I got the XT720. Once I realized the memory limitations of Eclair, I set out to find a way to get Froyo on my XT720 and your vids were perfect for me.

This is what I want to see, but if there is a way for you discuss the best setup for performance, battery saving, and a good mixture, I'm up for that too since it seems to be the one common downfall for just about every large screen smartphone owner.

Infuse, stock ROM force closing Google services framework after market update.

Ok, so my wife has an Infuse and she's experiencing frequent force closes related to the Google services framework. I've dug through several threads mentioning force closes of the framework and tried most of the suggested fixes. The only thing I've stumbled upon that makes a difference is removing the latest market update. This solves the problem until the market updates itself again.
I'm assuming this us because its not completely compatible with her outdated stock ROM.
So the point here is can i prevent the market from updating without root? Has anyone else had this problem with their Infuse?
Normally i don't root her phones but with all of the issues related to trying the get an official update, which still hasn't arrived, she is warming to the idea of a custom ROM. I don't follow the Infuse forum enough to know which ROMs are out there so if anyone has suggestions for a fast, stable ROM that also has Touchwiz I would appreciate it, especially if i cant sort this out in the current ROM. At least until i can get her sold on CM...
Anyway thanks for reading and i appreciate any suggestions.

And Vagabound would be great if she's looking for stock. She might cry though, with all the bloat and battery draining apps that she is missing. Also, if she says that her wifi is dropping, set your router's dchp (whatever it is) to one week instead of forever.. and....... I think that should do you. I would tell you where the thanks is, but based on your account, you look like you know where it is.

Don't worry about that, i know how much work goes into this and how much it helps me so i try to make a point not to be ungrateful. Especially when it promotes domestic tranquility
Like you said it isn't my phone so i only see it when there's a problem. That makes the help even more appreciated.

I have to say thanks again to Erik_t, qkster and gtg465x. I don't work with too many Samsung devices so it would have been easy to miss something importand but the help and resources you provided made this quick and easy. My Mrs is now very happy with her new ROM and with the improved battery life and performance.
Most of the process was pretty standard but I had to read the rooting instructions a few times to make sure I wasn't missing anything, it was just simpler than I'm used too. .
She is now a happy Vagabond user, the stars have aligned and domestic bliss reigns supreme. Thanks.

A call to arms!

Ok, I mentioned in annother thread that I am willing to learn developing so our phone dosent die. I've rrun into a bit of a hiccup in that I'm compeletly new to programming and I've either gotten no response or a negative one when I went looking for pointers. Fear not I am still not giving up it is just going to take longer than expected. So in interest of keeping development moving forward I'm putting out a call to arms. Are there any other aspiring developers out there? If so post in this thread what you are good at and what you can do. Perhaps we can collaborate and push out a rom in the near future. Personally I am an expert at graphic manipulation and can handle all of the ui, still working on the coding part. For everyone else, post things you would like to see and perhaps one of us could pick it up and run with it. Let's work together and make this work better than they ever thought it could!
Sent from my SGH-T839 using XDA
Sigh..
We can't work together if you don't have experience with coding.
If you really want to get a spark, you need to get a promising build onto github. And, you will need experience and attention to detail. Nobody wants to help if you don't comment your code, keep good changelogs, and maintain a good readme.
So far, I don't see it out there.
Furthermore, I can't afford to spend hours working on something that won't pay my mortgage. Most of us can't.
If I hit the lottery, maybe I'm your guy. In the meantime, we can't work together without a leader.
And, let's hope the next developer isn't lacing every file with a bunch of jibber jabber about "don't kang my sh*t, bro." Because, a collaborative effort would require plenty of sharing.
Just my two cents.
I would love to see a new Sense rom. but this place seems dead. Coming from the G1 I was surprised to see barely any roms. Even though the G1 is a ancent phone, it had quite a bit of rom and there's more activity over there than there is activity over here.

I appreciate your honesty. But you misunderstand my intentions. I am not looking for someone to hold my hand and walk me through how to do everything. I, at most, am looking for info on how to start. I know I need expirence in coding before I can push out a rom, and that it will take a while to get that. That's why I started this thread. So, instead of waiting for me to finish the learning process we can get any other aspiring developers together to start something new in the meantime. I know there are others out there and if we all start posting what we can do and what we would like to see then maybe something may come from it. Thank you for point me to github, I'm sure I can learn some more from there. I understand about responsibilities getting in the way of hobbies, I have kids and a mortgage too, I'm just looking to get all the new developers together so that we can share and work together. I have a friend that writes code for websites for a living and I'm trying to get him on board to take this up as a hobby. Here's hoping.

I would be welcomed to help teach you a bit. I wish I had a learning curve when I was just beginning how to cook ROMS.
1. Download a ROM, unzip it, browse around files, and open files. Play with things.
2. When in doubt, Google it. It's likely someone else had the same problem before you and is a basis on how I fix 80% of ROM problems.
3. Always, always make a NANDROID. A foolish mistake is to flash your own ROM and not have a backup to go to, and than you have to start all over.
