this might be a big time noob question but that's the 2 dots near the earpiece? looks like a camera or led?
can't find anything on the web about it.
One is possibly the light sensor and I don't know what the other one is. A blinking LED would be nice to have though.
the are probably the proximity sensor and light sensor. Well that would make the most sense to me at least.
I keep staring at the two dots and I'm convinced big brother is watching me. Lol

He is, and every time he gets a really close look at your ear, he turns off the display so your ear doesn't start randomly pressing "buttons".
The one on the Right is the Proximity Sensor and the one on the Left is probably the Ambient Light Sensor.
If you start a call (to say voicemail) and touch just the right side it will turn off the screen. If you just touch the left the screen stays on.
i lol'd, nice one.
Umm to add value to my post.. how come when i cover the sensors with my thumb, my screen doesnt get darker? I have auto brightness on.

I just ditched my Notion ink Adam for the mighty Xoom. I'm glad to say I'm impressed. Now for the reason behind my post. Is it normal to see a diamond like pattern(what I suspect to be the digitizer) behind the glass.... I first noticed it while playing with the youtube app. The deep black colors gave way to what I thought was just noise from the video, but after looking at it on an angle with the screen off you can definitely see the pattern.
Is this normal? Last I remember seeing a digitizer was on my Mogul.
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA Premium App
A small moire type pattern or a large contrast difference pattern. I have seen the large pattern occasionally. It doesn't seem to interfere with actual usage.
it the screen capacitive touch sensors (dunno the technical term). i can see it on just about every touch screen except the ipad - go figure.
the 101 is a crosshatch, the nook color are dots, this xoom is a crosshatch with some kind of checker pattern.
I figured it was normal, just didn't expect it to be so profound. It has no hindering effect on user experience. I hope people don't take this and blow it out of proportion as a flaw...lol

They probably will.. lol I've seen people make issues of of something trivial like a button squeaking when you press it.. I can already picture people saying "my xoom screen is messed up"

yeah the only time you notice it will be on dark scenes/backgrounds with ambient light and holding it at a certain angle. the 101 is more predominant but it's really not a bother.
Bad LCD panel?
Hi everyone. I just bought my wifi-only model from Staples today (Sunday). I noticed a little "problem" with the LCD panel when I turned it on, but disregarded it.
While watching a movie, I noticed the issue in full force. When a movie file is playing and there is a black background, I can see "mini-panels" and it's very distracting. I don't see this on a solid black background without media playing so I'm guessing it's something with the backlight. I'm attaching a photo (glad I was able to capture it this way!).
Anyone else seeing this? I didn't look close enough at the store's display.
And so it begins...

that's the capacitive sensors. i wonder how apple hides theirs.
Ive got them too, didnt notice it on any other devices ive used but its just the capacitor mesh that moto decided to use. My glass almost seems wavy as well (like not 100% flat) so not sure what my feelings are on that yet...
my guess on the waves is that it helps curb reflections.
Yeah what you guys are seeing is definitely the digitizer. On most touch screen devices you can see the digitizer at the right angle and with bright enough light (ie sunlight seems to bring it out the most). My guess is if you test this is a lower light setting you wont see any of the digitizer.
I have also noticed the digitizer on the xoom screen relatively easily.
well, ive just noticed the waves. i usually see small waves on screens but these are warps. good thing i'm trying to pay attention to the image on screen instead of the reflection, lol.
I have seen little warps on the bottom of the screen like 1/3 or the way to the middle and 2/3 to the right side (like a couple inches off center on each side). They are also in the same relative position on the top. My guess is this is how the screen is attached? It would be great if someone could take a good look at theirs, it may take looking at the reflection of light in those spots to actually see the warp, but I would really like to know if it is just mine or it is on all of them. And BTW I see the digitizer too, but it is worse on my HTC inspire 4g.
While making/receiving/in call....there is a flashing red light. Did anyone else notice this besides me? It's towards the bottom left of the FC.
Is there a purpose for this?
Haha yeah dude that's the proximity sensor that cuts the screen off when you put it to your face. I noticed that last night. Pretty funny that you can actually see it.

Take any camera and film your different remotes while you press their buttons and the camera will upconvert the infrared spectrum into the visible spectrum.
But I have never heard of any human able to actually see the infrared spectrum although there exists animals that can detect it.

Indeed. My first thought when I saw it was "why am I seeing infrared light....what the hell?????". But anyways, no biggie. Can't really see it unless you're looking for it in the dark or something. Certainly isn't an issue or problem.
i too can see it
does that mean we are superhuman ?
Im off to try and blow stuff up with my mind. Ill report back later

OK I thought REALLY hard and was able to levitate the One S. I'll see what else we can do with it. I think the next step is using it as a heat ray weapon.
Lol, pmsl!

Yeah, make a call in a dark room, you'll see it. But its def. the prox. sensor.
smart butts!!!
Lol, sorry I didn't mean to put inferred, I put inferred because it was red. But you guys knew what was getting at.
Thanks for the answer nickmv.
I just tested it myself and what do you know... the LED has a dim glowing red... very faint but it's there... so no... it's not really in the infrared spectrum but quite close to it nonetheless... but then again it could be a dual colored LED; one with the infrared light and one with the visible light... I don't know...
It is so freaky! But true. Only visible in a dark environment for me.
I was killing time with my one s camera and my remote control, never know u can see the inferred light from a camera, Feels like science class
It's the proximity sensor...you know, the thing that turns your screen on and off when you put the phone to your face during a phone call then move it away from your face...

darn this thread got me excited, thought maybe the One s had another notification light that we could use for stuff! I really hate the placement of the LED on this phone, but I guess its good enough that it even has one. I wish it would glow at least, not just flash. would be a lot more noticable
I noticed it today in bright sunlight. And there is another thingy next to it. Nevertheless I find that red flickering light pretty annoying. It makes me nervous, it flickers like a ethernet status LED. Hope theres a way to turn it off...

Did anyone solve this?
I have a problem with the sensor; If i use my headset, it won't stop blinking after I make a call. If I make a new call and immediately end the call, the sensor stops blinking.
I contacted HTC and they told me that I should send it for repairs...

I remember this red glow of the LED from the good old IRDA transmitters that we had in phones and laptops years ago.
If you look at the light spectrum you'll notice that Infrared is very close to red

+1... I noticed the same "effect" on my phone last night - H/W malfunction? Does it drain a little bit a battery by "sensing" continuously? Or just a "cosmetic" matter?...
Any feedback from HTC or another source? Any way to disable it?
EDIT : "I contacted HTC and they told me that I should send it for repairs..." <- I hope it could be solved without that option ...
I just got my replacement phone today and everything on it is perfect except that it had some light bleed at the bottom under the capacitive buttons. It's hard to check everything at the store before you leave because the sales reps don't want to open a bunch of phones that they now can't sell.
My question is, is there anyone who has light bleed and are just gonna live with it and keep the device? I have no stuck/dead pixels, the device is starting relatively cool, and there is no screen separation or yellow spots.
I have a hard time making these types of decisions because of my ocd, so I'm just looking for some opinions. If you think this is a dumb topic or feel you have to bash me for it please just save yourself the time. If you don't wanna answer the question then don't. Thanks in advance to all who reply.

Mine has a tiny bit of bleed to the right of the capacative buttons, but nothing I can't live with, only noticable in a dark room really.

Mine has a little light bleed as well, but I can live with it just for the fact that everything else on my phone is immaculate.
Swyped from my HTC One X using XDA Premium.
i only notice it when there is no light, doesnt bother me? doesnt effect the screen quality or anything. its all good.
I have a light bleed to the bottom left of capacitive buttons, its only visible in dark places, it has annoyed me a bit, but i have to live with it ,anyway i have turned off the baclit completely using the script posed in the development section. It doesnt bother me anymore.
Tiny bit bottom left under capacitive buttons, only in dark room. No buggy.

Thanks guys. I can't notice it in daylight either which is pretty cool. I'll have to wait for root on 1.85 to turn them off tho.

Well, it looks like the bleed is actually coming from the capative buttons, which turn off automatically when it's bright enough so you won't notice anything anyway

Hey guys, I just wanna make sure I know what light bleed even looks like! So when I tilt my phone forward and look down towards the capacitive buttons I definitely see light coming from them, but I literally have to tilt the phone to see it. It doesn't bother me at all, do most of you tilt your phone a lot when using it or is 'light bleed' when it creeps onto your screen from a normal viewing angle?

Does anyone get what looks like a row of lights shining up from the bottom of the display above the capacitive buttons?
Sent from my HTC One X using XDA
I don't but at the top when booting there is a line that is definitely brighter than the rest of the HTC boot screen. I'm assuming that's a light bleed but it doesn't bother me.
Mine bleeds a little onto the screen when it's dark. My att guy says its a warranty issue covered for a year.

Hi All-
Picked up a One XL from AT&T after my SGSII's screen shattered. Very impressed with this phone. Screen quality, build quality, and me being sick of the "plasticky" Samsungs led me to pick the One XL over the SGSIII. I have a couple of questions though.
1) There is an occaisional "click" noise emitting from the camera flash when the flash is enabled when taking pictures. It's as if the LED flash is charging up and makes a click noise when taking a picture. It doesn't happen every picture but happens often. I heard in last night in a very quiet room and but if there is any noise around you, you can still slightly hear it I basically wanted to know if this was normal or not as I am well within the 30 day return period. Also, upon exiting the camera, there will also be a clicking noise. Again, not all the time, but more often than not.
2) I know there is a an LED in the speaker grill, but during a call there is a red LED inside of the screen (just left of the ATT logo). It sure isn't bright, but I want to make sure this is normal too. Is this the proximity sensor?
Thanks
I believe that is the proximity sensor. Also the clicky is normal. Just shake the phone a little and it clicks around in there.
1) The auto-focus module sometimes makes a clicking sound, as it adjusts itself. I'll bet this is what you are hearing, and that you will also hear the click when the flash is set to "off".
2) Yes, the proximity sensor is just to the left of the AT&T logo.
Thanks all. Appreciate the help!
Now just waiting on the Ballistics SG case so my One X doesn't suffer the same fate as my SGSII !!
Your welcome. Be sure to click the "Thanks" button on posts you find helpful!
How much of this is to be expected?
I have a noticeable amount , of course I only noticed it when in a dark room against black backgrounds.. but it makes me wonder if I should demand another unit from amazon.
Sent from my SM-P900 using XDA Free mobile app
Mine has it too. bottom right side and bottom. Only visible when watching full screen video that's letterboxed. Doesn't bother me though.
I notice it gets worse when I flex the tablet by holding it in landscape by the bottom left corner so I kind of wonder if in part it is more predominant on that corner for my tablet because that's the primary way that I hold the tablet. It's not like I can flex it the other way to get rid of the bleeding completely though so I don't know if I can reverse it. If memory serves, out of the box I already had some bleed anyhow. This is my second Note Pro and the first one had bleed on the bottom as well.
I'm sure you'll get responses from some who have no light bleed, some of which actually do but it doesn't bother them and some who really do not have any bleed. It's up to you I guess if it is worth the effort and waiting to try to get a perfect one. For me it simply is not . .
Thanks.. can any one post any pictures of their tablet?
I have attached mine under full brightness, total darkness and black background.. it is slightly exaggerated in some phots as it depends on what angle you see the screen
Sent from my SM-P900 using XDA Free mobile app
I have the same hot spot on the bottom edge to the right of center. On the right bottom corner I have some that is less pronounced.
The only 'sort of' light bleed I have is from the two softkeys when they light up.... Other than that, none whatsoever. (Can't take a photo as I can't imagine they'll shut down the entire train to give me some darkness...)
