DIY modded car dash mount - Desire Accessories

Update!
Sorry I had a webhost failure so images failed - rehosted images!
Can read all about the mod via Lifehacker here: http://lifehacker.com/5593245/build-a-custom-phone-car-mount-for-under-10

nice job!! thanks for sharing it

doing this mod for sure thanks

why you saying mod? if you buy already made stuff without mod?

It is possibly worth mentioning that the XDA Orbit 2 default mount also fits the Desire perfectly... all you need to do is shave a bit off the bottom lip to allow a USB connection for charging.

xda orbit 2 on ebay available?

Because it is a mod.
Mod means modified. My "mod" modifies 2 existing products (with some DIY) and creates a single product that's better than an off the shelf product for the Desire.

in this case it's a mod robbiekhan i find your username kinda familiar, where you on oc.uk?

Great idea, but can we have some pictures of it, i might give it a go

Re-linked images and article

Oh mate, your mod is sick, and the video just convinced!
I'm definitely gonna make one.
You used so called "mirror bond pads" is this hard to find? I live in France can you please provide the brand you used?

The brand I used was by Sellotape lol but any brand should be fine, halfords etc sell them too. Just sticky pads that are harder and thinner than normal sticky pads .

Thanks mate, i just ordered mine from ebay
Have a nice day.

Did this mod today, very pleased with the way it turned out.
Just changed a couple things, I used a junior hack saw to trim the end bits off the mount and then a stanley blade to trim the burrs left behind from the hacksaw to tidy it up.
I also used Velcro instead of double sided tape for a less permanent fixture. The cotton fibres in the velcro may also aid to shock absorption between mount and case.
Mount is rock solid even over bumps.
Fantastic, thanks OP!

Good stuff dude!
Surprised the velcro is stable over bumps though! In my car velcro would never stand a chance!
My solution of using mirror bond sticky pads also is non permanent too btw

Such and awesome mod, best thing is its universal.

This looks awesome, I got all the parts for my Droid Incredible, but I'm in the US- and I have no idea where to find an equivalent Mirror Bond Sticky Pads. Anyone know where I can find somethingl like this, here in the New World?

Any auto store will stock them, the same pads used to stick windshield rear view mirrors to the glass!

[DIY] Nexus One car holder

Here is my new DIY Nexus One car holder I just put together:
The base is from Garmin nüvi 200 series and the holder for phone is just plain hard shell I bought very cheap from eBay.
What do you think?

Curious how it holds up in the car, but looks pretty good and low profile.

It looks great and slim also holds phone quite well.
Here are few photos in 'action' (sorry for the mess in my garage):
That looks really good. Much better than my "universal" POS that wobbles and rattles and occaisonally drops my phone:
http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/...uctId_381889_langId_-1_categoryId_165452#dtab
Can you link to the case you bought (or a similar one) please?
And where did you get the base? Was it a spare you had?

I'm new user and I am not permitted to post outside links.
For case just search for 'BLACK HYBRID HARD BACK CASE FOR HTC GOOGLE NEXUS ONE' on UK eBay.
For base search 'GARMIN NUVI WIDESCREEN MOUNT FOR 200, 200T, 200W & MORE' - you will get several results from Hong Kong - they are very cheap.
I've attached photo of this mount.
You just have to cut off two horns on Garmin cradle and stick it on case with some thin mirror bond sticky pads.
Hope this is not too confusing.
Not confusing at all. You've made the whole thing very clear, in fact!
Thank you for the info. I'll be making mine very soon!
WOW BRILLIANT IDEA. JUST ORDERED THE PARTS. Do you think it's better to use superglue instead of mirror adhesive?

Thanks. I'm glad you like it.
I think superglue will also works but I put mirror tape for future considerations - it will be easier to remove tape and change shell case when I change phone.

lol you're always one step ahead of me. Thanks for the idea
Haha I have the exact same holder and a very similar case and I was trying to come up with a way to make them work together. I hadn't considered getting another case and then modifying the garmin holder. I'll be doing this as well!
Rinegpeace, can you please give some comment about the quality of the back case? How thin is it? rubbery on the inside/outside? Would you feel comfortable using the phone with the case on all the time?
Thanks in advance!

For everyday use I would pick little harder case. This one is thin and it is very easy to pull phone in and out. This is preferable for car dock but for real case it is maybe too flexible.
After couple days of testing I feel very secure about holding my N1 while driving and even if you turn this dock upside down it will hold your phone in the cradle. So, maybe you will like it as everyday case.
Here is one short video of detaching and attaching my N1 in this car dock:

that's awesome, thanks mate!
You can also get the air vent mount for the nuvi instead of the suction mount. I kinda don't want it to stick to glass so this is nice.
what are those mirror adhesive pads? buy them at home depot?

You'd be better off finding them at an automotive store or maybe walmart if they are to repair a rear view mirror that fell off inside a car as I'm suspecting.
This has been featured in Lifehacker some weeks ago, with the same materials... the idea was from a OcUK user.
I've already made one myself for my HTC Legend and it looks great, it was cheap, and it's really sturdy.
Is it me or does the first photo in the original post look like it has a windows logo!?!
This is a great idea. I just finished it for my Touch Pro 2 with no problems. I hvae a slight difference though. I cut the very top off of the silicon case so that my tp2 can slid in and out with ease. Although there is plenty of friction to keep it in normally.
I just wanna say that after 2 days of using this in my car it is just working absolutely perfectly. The easy rotation is very convenient and it looks really good as well, being so form fitting to my phone.
Now that is cool.
I shall be getting the bits this week.

[Q] Does anyone have this car mount...

Heres a link: http://store.androidcentral.com/clingo-universal-vent-mount/3A78A8427.htm
Looks cool but does it actually work? Does anyone have any experience with these type of mounts?
Thanks everyone!
Haven't tried that one, but this one looks pretty similar and got a great review (though it's not available yet).

This one also looks really cool I think.

(you gotta add the www's to the front of the links, since I can't post links yet)
They have a suction cup one of these too that I meant to get for my Vibrant. I always looked in the cell section of stores like best buy when I was there, but never took the time to order from amazon. They get great reviews everywhere I looked.
I got an OEM one for the G2X and it works very well. I love that it has a sensor to put the phone into car mode automatically when docking. I know thats not new but after buying 3 flagship phones this is the first one that actually has this feature.
I guess the big advantage to the clingo is you can use it with a case.

This looks really cool too! I might pick it up for watching video at the poker table and as a bedside stand. I seriously doubt most people will be toting it around and reconfiguring it for each and every task throughout the day as their video suggests. Maybe I'm just not cool enough to own one yet, those people all looked pretty cool...
The Clingo stuff works really well actually. Leaves no sticky residue and if you start losing stick (after about 3 weeks), just use a lint free cloth and water to clean the surface and the sticky comes right back.
I only got rid of my Clingo for the one that mounts into your CD player slot.
there's a comment about the oona suction cup won't work well with the g2x because of the google strip on the back cover. anyone tried any type of suction cup with this phone before? i don't have one to try.

DIY Game Clip for any phone/case (coat hanger)

I received some feedback asking me to post instructions on how I made my game clip to hold my phone (Galaxy S III) to a PS3 controller (homemade or DIY Gameclip). I have posted a pdf of the instructions on mediafire and attached a 7zip file of it to this post.
http://www.mediafire.com/view/?gg4lyu663854moa
I first of all would like to say I got the idea from the thread of the GameKlip and thought it was a brilliant idea and a nice product, but I didn't want to spend $30 U.S. (incl. shipping) and wait a couple weeks to get one....and I couldn't keep my case on the phone while I used it, so I made my own. Kudos to the GameKlip if you are interested in getting one.
Here's the latest Gameklip for the Galaxy s3 http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2027611
I do love using my GameKlip... when not using my extended battery (which I have on most of the time). This will solve all! I wonder if some sort of insulation for pipe/etc could be used to further cushion the phone... hmmm.... Maybe one of the rubber coated hangers.
Either way, how did I not think of this?! I tried sheet metal and other way more complex options, lol.
I'll post my rendition of this! Hope to try it out tonight!
THANKS AGAIN!

Thank you. I have thought about something like plasti-dip ... dip the whole thing after making it...probably would just have to take into account the thickness if the coating while making it.
http://www.homedepot.com/buy/performix-brand-plasti-dip-11603-6.html#.UP1_eGdmO2U
I look forward to seeing your idea of it, please post pics. I have thought of different ways to "design" it, including having only one arm holder at the top. Making the bottom "hooks" up from the button 1 & 2 "towers" to move the phone up, etc... in the mean-time it works well for me...I hope yours does for you.
I got some Plasti-Dip at home I use on my car and thought of that as well. I got a few different ideas I'm gonna try to play with. ... Just a matter of finding time as wife and I are preparing for our firstborn. I'll definitely post pics of whatever I come up with!
possible to do a similar style but for a mini bluetooth keyboard? im having a hard time figuring out that one....
I am sure something is. I don't have a mini blue tooth keyboard. Which one do you have?
Have you seen the universal gameclip? It just sticks to a cheap case? How about a flat piece of metal stuck to case with the phone and velcro'd to the bottom of the keyboard? Could even bend it slightly if you don't want it flat?

Excellent job
That looks pretty darn snazzy. I know I would be employing the "Close enough" meme if I tried to do that.
I have been thinking of something like this but I must design a little differently as I will use it on an xbox360 controller and a 7 inch tablet.

Please post pics for anyone else who may want that setup. I don't have an xbox controller so I couldn't try...it definitely looks a bit trickier. Good luck.
Thanks. I will make pictures for sure. Still in the planning phase for the moment but will work on it next week.
Tried three times and failed. Baby en route, so it's on the back burner.
BTW: the rubber coated hangers SUCK to bend, rubber tears easily! Don't waste one!
I made one with 1 hook on top to hold the phone. The bend makes it act like a spring. It's easier to get the phone out of this one

I made mine using your instructions; I strongly encourage you to get some shrink wrap tubing. It looks much better than whatever old varnish the coat hanger may have left, and there won't be glue smudging as with electrical tape.
I happened to have a slightly larger tube which I used on the hook portion. To make the tips, after having deburred with a file, I simply left some extra length, bent that backwards and finished it off with an additional short tube added in a second pass.
It is preferable to make your bends first, then work the tubing on, as pliers will most likely damage the tubing cosmetically at least.
A small black zip tie secures the mini-USB cable. Not shown in the photos, I found an old camera lanyard and added over the metal frame for some additional security.
Here are the results:
Cheers,
Darkshado
Awesome! Thanks for posting pics! I use the sixaxis app so I don't need the wires but yours looks great with them. I like the tubing too. Your are of course absolutely right about no gummy from the tape with the tubing. I bet it makes it stickier too so the phone won't slide around.

Looks awesome, I'm definitely going to attempt one myself. What diameter heat shrink did you use? (approx)
Thanks! IIRC, the smaller one was 4-5 mm, the larger 10 mm. It can always be cut and removed if the size you're using isn't working, and tubing like this is cheap.
LONG overdue but needless to say I've failed at 3 attempts. Trying to get them perfect and they snap on me. Might just try to mod one of my 1st Gen Game Klips I got laying around since I now have the 7000mAh battery to give me PLENTY of gaming!
Guys its a lot easier to buy a spider podium and wrap it and shape it to fit your phone. Worked perfectly. Only downside is that its unremovable. Just added a camera lanyard

Is there a Car Mount for the N'4 with a thick case?

Hi,
I have looked over here and read few posts regarding a car mount...but still - didn't found anything for me.
I have a N'4 that with a case - the thickness is about 2cm.
The mount can be anywehre - BUT NOT ON THE FRONT GLASS.
Budget is up to 30$ USD.
Need you help by giving some ideas / model or any info' that might help me to find the "one"....
Appreciate you help!
Thank you!

Mountek? (what i love in "Mountek" is that the phone is not always infront of my eyes and the location is very good).

I think that even thse the bottom "teeth" that support from the bottom are around 1.5cm.
But from other side, the plates on the sides - hold the device so tight and strongly.

Can you recommend a car mount for the S4 Trident Kraken case ?

Hello ,
I am looking to see if there is a car mount for the S4 Trident Kraken case .
Would you be able to make a suggestion ? Does anyone have experience with this ? I am tired of having to always fumble for the phone in the console .
Thanks !

I resell for ProClip, and I'm sure many can attest to it on here, but their adjustable cradles are top notch. They make custom dash mounts, usually with multiple locations for just about every car out there as well. I'm on my phone at the moment or I'd send you some specific links, but hop on their website, and you can easily find your options. And any questions, ask away. I can also "publicly" save you 10% on their products, but can save you a little more via a PM.

Well the one you'd most likely want is their medium adjustable. It's made with wider grooves to work better with the dual layer type cases. It specifies a device up to 0.62 inches thick. I never understood their methodology for this because the phones don't need to be fully captured in the grooves. As long as part of fits within, it's fine, and a majority of cases/phones have some sort of taper at the sides so device thickness is thinner at the outside edges. So you won't have any problems fitting your kraken'd phone in the holder.
Your only issue, if you want to call it one is the corners extend slightly beyond the sides. You could have a touch of left to right rock, but that would be doubtful because the holder is completely adjustable so you can loosen the screws, slide the phone in, press against the sides until it's snug, and tighten down. I'm sure that rubber is fairly grippy, and the ability to set the width so there's some resistance as you slide it in and out will keep it steady.
I've been doing this since I designed the first smartphone holsters for them (before Seidio said, oh ****, these things will sell, and then the rest of the injection molders hopped on board). I've sold quite a few adjustables for most cases out there including all the otterbox/lifeproof ones. Haven't had a return yet because they didn't like how their phone fit.
Your other option is to go with the cheap spring ratchet type ones where you rest it on the ledge and squeeze the sides until it's snug and press a button to release it. Then you're pretty much going with a vent or adhesive mount and most likely ProClip has a better dash mounting option for your car, though some older vehicles have limited options involving a vent area. They use crevices in the dash to lock their mounts in place. Some vehicles have better options then others. You can poke around and see the options for your car.
Hope that helps.
Up until about a week ago I was using the iBolt XPro dock with an Otterbox Commuter case. There was still a good amount of adjustability left so I'm sure it'll accommodate your case. And you get the added bonus (which the is reason I bought it in the first place) of charging and audio out from the USB cable.
