Trying to play voicemail messages sent from my work on my phone, and although I can play most .wav files on my phone, the .wav files that the voicemails messages come back with "Windows Media - An invalid media type was specified" error message when I try to play them. I need to update my windows media to support this file type or find another program that can play these wav files.
Unfortunately, these same voicemail messages play on an iphone, so my employer isn't helping with the issue. I either have to get an iphone or get this figured out. Please help.
My phone is a
HTC Touch Pro 2
Windows Mobile 6.5
GTX 2.5
Anyone used Core player, does that solve the issue?
Guess the solution is to buy an apple, lol.
Resolved.
Was able to locate a pre-regged core player cab on Vuze, installed the cab, rebooted, then inside coreplayer updated the file association to include waveform, rebooted. Issue resolved, wav files play.

Hey everyone
I need some help with my XDA.
I can no longer play wma files as ringtones. I could a few days ago.
Im a registered user of PocketZenPhone and I used to have different wma ringtones on different profiles.
Now none can be played.
If I use Pocket Music I can play .wma files but if I go to "Settings --> Sounds & Notifications --> Notifications" and select any wma file, even the build in ones and press play I hear nothing. The strange thing is that I can't even leave the "Notifications" menu.
Each time I press Ok it returns me to "Incoming Ringtone" I have to force to go to Today screen to leave this menu. If I select wav file for ringtone its played OK.
I checked out the forums and the net and found some references to Windows Media Player file associations.
I removed all audio progs and even removed any registry key concerning wma files. I created new association with Media Player but still no ringtones.
If I tap a wma file from file manager the first time it starts WM Player and the file is being played OK but if I select a second or third etc the media Player does nothing or most of the times it gives me the following error:
X in red circle
"Windows Media Player cannot play this file
because the required codec is not installed.
Try using Media Player 9 series or later to
copy the file from your computer to your
device again"
What the hell is that? Media Player version is 9 built 14053.
All my ringtones were and are in the \Windows\Rings directory
Registry looks OK
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.wma only has a (Default) String value of WMAFile
and
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\WMAfile has association with mwplayer.
Any suggestions.
P.S. Sorry for the big post. just tryed to give as much info as possible.
Wma ??
Does anyone has or had similar problem that can help?
i got that problem..
i got that problem too.. mine i uninstalled pocket music.. then it went fine.. i guess all your wma files was running in pocket music.. that it won't play with windows media.. that i didn't get.. coz if a file is associated it still should and can play.. try it if it works...
You are right wma files were played by Pocket Music but not only did I remove the association and unistalled it but also restored association to Windows Media Player. Still no joy though.
Same problem here!
Well, sort of... The thing is that SOME .wma or midi files don't work as ringtones anymore but some others do.
I also use PocketZenPhone.
Weird...
Media Player error reproducing wma files.
Can anybody more experienced with XDAs help us here. The Media Player error when playing wma files from a file manager can be replicated by anyone here?
The firt one plays but the subsequent ones produce the foll. error:
X in red circle, and,
"Windows Media Player cannot play this file
because the required codec is not installed.
Try using Media Player 9 series or later to
copy the file from your computer to your
device again".
Is sometheing wrong with Media Player installation?
file association
The key is making sure that the .wma is associated with windows media player. you have to go into the application and un/select .wma to default to windows media player. you can also do this with a tweak program, but its best to do it within the actual applications. otherwise, you will hear either nothing or a warning beep in place of the selected file. This will also hold true for any ringtone program you may have.
I just got this problem too. Tried to open a file through explorer and nothing is set as the defult player for wma files. Any ideas how to set them back to windows media player? Is there a simple reg key that can be changed?
Edit: I installed pocket tweak, but when I go to choose a program it starts in my documents with no way to go back up a level to get to the windows folder (where mplaer.exe is).
Edit 2: I did a soft reset and ringtones worked again. How strange.
Media Player error message on wma lpayback
Well "davidleecpowell" if you read my firts post you will see that not only have I removed association from oher audio player but also completely removed the software except media player. Also re assigned association with Media Player but still no ringtones.
If I tap a wma file from file manager the first time it starts WM Player and the file is being played OK but if I select a second or third etc the media Player gives me the following error:
X in red circle
"Windows Media Player cannot play this file
because the required codec is not installed.

Its very strange indeed and the last thing want to do is YET ANOTHER HARD RESET.
Suggestions anyone?

I have some .mid files from my old spv c500, which i kinda like. However, even though the ringtone selector see's the files it won't play them. Is there a way to use them? Or is there a way to convert them to .wav?
Shouldn't be a problem.
They need to be named .mid, and they need to be in the \windows directory.
No, didn't work. It's like there is no file type association in WM2005. The icon for the file is just the normail icon Windows applies to unkown file types. Even the Mobile Windows Media Player doesn't play it. It's just a standard midi file, about 8k in size, and is call grandstand.mid The ringtone selector see's it, but won't play it.
Is there any way of downloading a new version of mediaplayer or a codec (not that i've ever heard of .mid files needing a codec) to support it?
check this thread.

That did the job, thanks alot.
That link has disappeared, can you post the cure or another link please as I have the same problem.
Hi there, is there any way I can watch this video (for example: mms://sdmc.contents.edgestreams.net/horsgv/regions/siege/infos/f2/20h/HD_20h_20070904.wmv?WMCache=0) on my SP5m with TCPMP 0.72RC1. So far, only the audio works, it says "video codec (Windows Media 9) not supported by the player". My smartphone is running WM6 (english perfect edition). I also tried using the built-in Windows Media player to play it but without success, it says "an unknown error occured". Same with the software "Streaming Media" which looks like it opens a rtsp:// link only, it won't work because it won't load a mms:// link.
I thought those Windows Media 9 codecs were installed by default, are they? I say this because I kind of remember playing a video on TCPMP that was using a WM9 video codec...
If I need to install that codec, how would I do that? Where would I find it?
Any help would be really appreciated! Thank you all for your time.

...same problem here - maybe this will help:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/archive/index.php/t-299662.html
Edit 1: worked fine on my Ameo with WM6 - jus copy the 2 dll files(from this Thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=298126 ) inthe windows directory of your ppc - then install tcpmp 0.81 und wmv are running in good quality 6 you also hear Audio
Works like a charm for me as well, I copied the 2 missing dlls (1 file copied, 1 file overwrited) into Windows directory and tadam, it worked even without rebooting, I was able of looking my news stream. Thanks all!
hello,
can someone please help me? I've upgraded to Windows Mobile 6. I've signed up for ORB and i wanted to use tcpmp as my default player for playing videos but i keep getting the same errors...
Can't Play WMA File
Can't Play WMV9 File
now i did try copying both .dll files to my "smartphone" and when i did go into my smartphone, i couldn't see the files, they were hidden - how do you go about doing this? i'd really appreciate it if someone could help me out here.
now, my question is - is it because these files were extracted from a ppc device and i need smartphone specific files? can someone please help, thanks.

well, i am having the same problem ;/ tried everything... when using coreplayer it works, but i cant set ringtones to .wma files it just says "file is corupted or something" but its not corrupted CorePlayer plays it well... and when i try to play it in WMP it says "The specified module could not be found" and pda freezes... ;[
problem was in these 3 dlls:
mp3dmod.dll
wma9prodecoder.dll
wmv9decoder.dll
after restoring original from rom, everything works fine again
We just switched to VOIP at our office and I just picked up a fuze. I have the VOIP set to email me a copy of the voicemail but when i try to listen to the voicemail message media player says an invalid media type was specified.
Do you guys know of any other media players that will play the message? It seems like a codec is missing to play the file. According to the file properties it says its a IMA ADPCM .wav file. Maybe there is a codec I can load so that windows media plays it on the fuze? Do any of you maybe have another media player that I can load to listen to the message on my fuze? I have attached the file that cannot be played on the fuze. It does play fine on the computer.
Thanks for your help
testing testing 1,2,3
works with coreplayer
i would assume then it would work with TCPMP (free)
Im thinking of just buying coreplayer.. Is there a way to make it open the files by default? Right now they always open with windows media player
under options there will be a spot for file associations, so you can change wav files to open up in coreplayer
I am sure someone beside me (and the other person which posted in the link below) have the problem of windows media player in WM 6.1 saving the playlist incorrectly by adding "/Playlists/" to the path inside playlist.asx
i.e. the correct path would usually be something like "/Storage Card/Music/mysong.mp3", instead windows media player would save the path inside the playlist.asx as "/Storage Card/Playlists/Music/mysong.mp3"
http://social.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/windowsmobile/thread/b683fa42-d381-4e84-b786-45863141a2d2
It doesn't happen all the time but it happens enough that it's annoying that you have to open a txt editor on the phone to delete all the extra "/Playlists" word being incorrectly added to the path of the mp3 files.
Anyone have any solution? Thanks
No one else has this problem? No one else want to confirm that they have this problem also?
I have a problem really similar to this... or may be related.
I have all my music stored in a custom folder structure on my PC. I have created playlists using Windows Media Player... then synced to my HTC Touch Pro 2.
Everything copies over perfectly and all playlists are copied... but when I try to play the playlists, it says it can't find the files?
I opened up the playlists in a text editor and it seems as though the path seems fine, so I'm not sure what the issue is.
Occasionally, the playlist will play fine!
I'm having the same problem in wm 6.5.5 (touch 2), doesn't have a fix?
