Windows Media Player in WM 6.1 not saving the playlist correctly - General Topics

I am sure someone beside me (and the other person which posted in the link below) have the problem of windows media player in WM 6.1 saving the playlist incorrectly by adding "/Playlists/" to the path inside playlist.asx
i.e. the correct path would usually be something like "/Storage Card/Music/mysong.mp3", instead windows media player would save the path inside the playlist.asx as "/Storage Card/Playlists/Music/mysong.mp3"
http://social.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/windowsmobile/thread/b683fa42-d381-4e84-b786-45863141a2d2
It doesn't happen all the time but it happens enough that it's annoying that you have to open a txt editor on the phone to delete all the extra "/Playlists" word being incorrectly added to the path of the mp3 files.
Anyone have any solution? Thanks

No one else has this problem? No one else want to confirm that they have this problem also?

I have a problem really similar to this... or may be related.
I have all my music stored in a custom folder structure on my PC. I have created playlists using Windows Media Player... then synced to my HTC Touch Pro 2.
Everything copies over perfectly and all playlists are copied... but when I try to play the playlists, it says it can't find the files?
I opened up the playlists in a text editor and it seems as though the path seems fine, so I'm not sure what the issue is.
Occasionally, the playlist will play fine!

I'm having the same problem in wm 6.5.5 (touch 2), doesn't have a fix?

wma ringtones with PocketZenPhone no more

Hey everyone
I need some help with my XDA.
I can no longer play wma files as ringtones. I could a few days ago.
Im a registered user of PocketZenPhone and I used to have different wma ringtones on different profiles.
Now none can be played.
If I use Pocket Music I can play .wma files but if I go to "Settings --> Sounds & Notifications --> Notifications" and select any wma file, even the build in ones and press play I hear nothing. The strange thing is that I can't even leave the "Notifications" menu.
Each time I press Ok it returns me to "Incoming Ringtone" I have to force to go to Today screen to leave this menu. If I select wav file for ringtone its played OK.
I checked out the forums and the net and found some references to Windows Media Player file associations.
I removed all audio progs and even removed any registry key concerning wma files. I created new association with Media Player but still no ringtones.
If I tap a wma file from file manager the first time it starts WM Player and the file is being played OK but if I select a second or third etc the media Player does nothing or most of the times it gives me the following error:
X in red circle
"Windows Media Player cannot play this file
because the required codec is not installed.
Try using Media Player 9 series or later to
copy the file from your computer to your
device again"
What the hell is that? Media Player version is 9 built 14053.
All my ringtones were and are in the \Windows\Rings directory
Registry looks OK
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.wma only has a (Default) String value of WMAFile
and
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\WMAfile has association with mwplayer.
Any suggestions.
P.S. Sorry for the big post. just tryed to give as much info as possible.
Wma ??
Does anyone has or had similar problem that can help?
i got that problem..
i got that problem too.. mine i uninstalled pocket music.. then it went fine.. i guess all your wma files was running in pocket music.. that it won't play with windows media.. that i didn't get.. coz if a file is associated it still should and can play.. try it if it works...
You are right wma files were played by Pocket Music but not only did I remove the association and unistalled it but also restored association to Windows Media Player. Still no joy though.
Same problem here!
Well, sort of... The thing is that SOME .wma or midi files don't work as ringtones anymore but some others do.
I also use PocketZenPhone.
Weird...
Media Player error reproducing wma files.
Can anybody more experienced with XDAs help us here. The Media Player error when playing wma files from a file manager can be replicated by anyone here?
The firt one plays but the subsequent ones produce the foll. error:
X in red circle, and,
"Windows Media Player cannot play this file
because the required codec is not installed.
Try using Media Player 9 series or later to
copy the file from your computer to your
device again".
Is sometheing wrong with Media Player installation?
file association
The key is making sure that the .wma is associated with windows media player. you have to go into the application and un/select .wma to default to windows media player. you can also do this with a tweak program, but its best to do it within the actual applications. otherwise, you will hear either nothing or a warning beep in place of the selected file. This will also hold true for any ringtone program you may have.
I just got this problem too. Tried to open a file through explorer and nothing is set as the defult player for wma files. Any ideas how to set them back to windows media player? Is there a simple reg key that can be changed?
Edit: I installed pocket tweak, but when I go to choose a program it starts in my documents with no way to go back up a level to get to the windows folder (where mplaer.exe is).
Edit 2: I did a soft reset and ringtones worked again. How strange.
Media Player error message on wma lpayback
Well "davidleecpowell" if you read my firts post you will see that not only have I removed association from oher audio player but also completely removed the software except media player. Also re assigned association with Media Player but still no ringtones.
If I tap a wma file from file manager the first time it starts WM Player and the file is being played OK but if I select a second or third etc the media Player gives me the following error:
X in red circle
"Windows Media Player cannot play this file
because the required codec is not installed.
Try using Media Player 9 series or later to
copy the file from your computer to your
device again"
Its very strange indeed and the last thing want to do is YET ANOTHER HARD RESET.
Suggestions anyone?

HTC Audio Manager - Playlist sort solution found

I have found a (fairly) simple solution for how to have a playlist in the HTC Audio Manager that is sorted by something besides alphabetical order. It's really more of a workaround, but at least it's something.
As you probably know if you're reading this, when you use the HTC Audio Manager and go to create a playlist, all of the songs are presented in alphabetical order with no way to sort them any other way. The names given are short enough that you may not even be able to differentiate songs if they have similar names. E.g. on Pink Floyd's The Wall, you have 3 songs called Another Brick In The Wall. The HTCAM doesn't given you enough name to differentiate them just by looking.
Anyways, if you want to have a playlist sorted by name you either have to look at the album and select the songs in order, rather a PITA; OR you can open up Media Player on your device. Queue up the songs you want into a playlist there and then save it. HTC Audio Manager has the ability to open audio playlists and will search your playlist folder by default. When you go back into the Audio Manager you should see the playlist you created in WMP if you go to Playlists. It will have a Windows Media Player icon next to it and you won't be able to change the playlist, but at least everything will be in order. If you use WMP on your PC to sync music to your phone, you can create the playlists there as well and they should carry over. Although I'm not certain on this since I've got a couple of WMP playlists that didn't carry over. But those were there before I flashed the ROM and might possibly not be saved in the correct location for the Audio Manager to pick them up.
I know it's may not the most elegant solution and certainly not as good as native support, but it is something that really bothered a lot of people. I know that for me it was a deal breaker but I can tolerate this workaround.
can anyone confirm the ability to create playlists on the PC and move them to the phone? I have yet to be able to do this.
Something that really grates me about AudioManager is the ability to piss me off by adding ringtones stored in my storage card to the library. If anyone knows who to add exceptions to certain folders it would be really awesome
Playlist transfer from PC
After pulling half my hair out, I decided ot do this right, and found the way to transfer a playlist with appropriate sorting from Windows to my HTC Touch Pro Audio Manager.
The clue appears to make sure that all references in the playlist are relative to the location of the playlist. I.e. you must store the playlist on the same location as the files. To get this to work I had to work with the TouchPro as a disk drive - which assigns a drive letter and makes things work better in Windows Media Player.
a) Open WMP on the PC
b) Enter “Library”
c) Make a new (empty) playlist
d) Make sure the playlist pane is open on the right
e) Connect HTC as diskdrive
f) Search for all music on the drive in Windows Explorer
g) Select all music found
h) Right click and add to Windows Media Player playlist
i) In WMP – save playlist as
Filename: “Any_name.asx”
Remember to choose file type wpl, m3u, asx to get the format right
Export to the device to get the path right
Steps a-d+i in Windows Media Player (WMP) - e is chosen on the device and f-h in Windows explorer.
My use was to have my playlist shuffled while avoiding repeats - and that could be handled in WMP, but you could also choose the sequence manually or make any other sorting.
Note: some sources of error are: Saving the playlist on the PC will cause references to E:\Music\Song.wma (or whatever) which is likely to be different from the reference internally on the device (\Storage\Music\Song.wma or such).
I hope this helps - if nothing else; I feel a little better to have contributed in return for all the great advice found on the site.
I also investigated playlists created with Playlist Manager on the TouchPro, and to me it appeared that some had a conflicting structure, and would not read in HTC Audio Manager. I suspected the sequence of Title and other headings, but didn't investigate fully.

Will your method copy all actual music files in PC to device or it will sync only playlist file? Do playlist files itself - without actual music files - useful for copying to device or backuping?

Pocket Media Player Pissing Me Off

I've searched for the answer to this but have not come up with the solution to this problem, just others relating to skipping tracks after a few seconds playing...
Here's my problem...
Some tracks that have been previously recognised and played by Pocket Media Player aren't playing anymore.
In the playlist, they show up with red letters like as if they have been deleted off the memory card, BUT THEY'RE STILL THERE.
Mysteriously, these tracks will playback fine if I go into File Explorer and select them from there.
I started to think that the path information in Pocket Media Player had become corrupted, so I deleted the whole database of my tracks and let the application find them again.
IT STILL DOESN'T PLAY SOME OF MY TRACKS!
Can anyone tell me WTF is going on?
Please don't tell me to use another media player unless this problem can't be fixed.
Thanks in advance.
A bit more background information may help...
I'm using the Vodafone WM6.1 on a Kaiser
There are no other programs running in the background.
Is this a file path problem?
Is there a limit to the number of characters in a path and maybe the files that don't play are the ones where this limit is exceeded?
Help!
Thanks.

Problems adding music to device?

Hi everyone,
Just got my Pro yesterday and generally loving it - with one major problem though.... I can't seem to add music to the device.
If I dump them straight on the memory card then TF3D music tab says "No Music Found", if I sync them over WMP11 to the device then it shows them - but no album art and their durations are all zero seconds. WMP won't play them either. They're just in MP3 format and play fine everywhere else.
Help?
In the TF3d music tab, click on the Library softkey. You should be able to find them in there (under artists, albums, etc). Once you select a song, it will then load into the TF3d music tab. Hope that helps.
Thanks, I can get them to show there but without album art and the duration is zero seconds... WMP Mobile shows an error "access denied" when i try to play them there, if that helps.
I have no problem accessing my mp3s, but I did not use WMP11 to sync them.
I just copied mp3s right onto my microSD card, separated into folders by album (eg: \Music\artist1\album1\song.mp3), with a folder.jpg image for the album art. TF3d/Library recognized the files and the album art with no problem.
Hmmn, tried that, still the same thing. Just hard reset the device and still a no-go. This is beginning to really bug me very badly (like sending the device back kinda bad).
Double post to update:
So, I find that I can add WMA files without a problem. So at least I have a viable work-around for the problem. This doesn't actually help me sort out what the problem regarding mp3s actually is.
I thought it may be something to do with the File Associations, that I broke them somehow by installed Coreplayer, but I'm less sure now that a Hard Reset didn't solve the problem. It still could be, I see others have had similar problems relating to the registry (although their problems always came after installation of a different media player, rather than on the devices stock ROM). Does anyone know where the pertinent registry values are, and what they should be? Or perhaps others have some different solutions?

Have you tried soft resetting and deleting the file
\Application Data\HTC\AudioManager_Eng\AudioManager_Eng.vol
before switching to the TouchFlo Music tab?
Found I've had to rebuild my library in this way each time new mp3s have been added.
(I assume the mp3 aren't DRM protected - copied a number over myself by mistake which caused a similar problem.)
Probably a silly question,
When i synced my phone with Windows media player 11, all the tracks went across but not the artwork. Having looked in the folders on my pc, i see that the folder has an image, but there is no image file to transfer to the TPro. How do i get the artwork across and does this have to be a manual process.
If the album art is in the folder and named folder.jpg it automatically picks them up ardsar.
Thanks for that Lazy Slug, I'll give it a go.

Fancy seeing you here, and sorry didn't mean to hijack your thread, it's a great forum eh!
im using vista with wmp v. 11 and wmp cannot see my touchpro even if it is connected (via bluetooth). i've got no problems syncing mails, calendars, etc. i just cant seem to sync audio files using wmp.
thanks.
Well, my problem is sorted (kinda). I backed up my mp3's to a different external hardrive, something has happened in that process that means they only work on my PC - my PS3 can no longer stream them, my N82 can't play them, my Touch Pro can't either. I'm still trying to work out how to fix them (although when I have time I'll dig up my old drive and see whether they work from there). So good news: nothing wrong with my PS3, N82, Touch Pro.
Regarding your issue dido-11 - have you set up the Touch Pro to sync in WMP11? Instructions are in the manual for how to, if you haven't already tried.
NZtechfreak: indeed, it's in the manual. sorry, quite excited to use it right away without looking at the manual.
fhsieh: thanks, ill try that method as well.

Did you try to reencode one mp3 in standard 128 (not VBR) and see if is played?
They're all constant bitrate, they work when converted to WMA. I don't think its a problem with encoding though, since they worked fine with everything previously.

I am syncing my music with Windows Media Player 11 - it syncs over fine and the image art is there when playing the music in the windows media player on the fuze, but not present in the cover flow app. Where are these images stored? There are no jpgs in the directories where the MP3s are.

Windows Media and Music Tab standard issues.. Detailed

I recently decided to start using my music player on my HD2 due to the newest Cookies HT 1.8 update, and Windows Media and Sense Music player seems to have lots of bugs within the music player and/or missing options and other stuff i cant seem to figure out. I'm just puzzled and thought maybe others are having the same problem
1. I had a ton of music all mislabeled tags and no artwork, so first i tried to use the update on Sense tab to replace the artwork with the generic melody icon. ***That feature NEVER works for me, It doesn't seem to work even on very well labeled music tags. even when i enable WiFi, it doesn't give me artwork. (this is the first issue)
2. Why can I play music from both Windows Media, and Sense Music. its kinda an issue. Sometime I like to go my SD and play a MP3 file, But I'd rather have Sense Music player do all the work, it seems to run much smoother than Windows Media player. How do you relink your mp3's to play to Sense music player when clicking on a Mp3 files from the SD Card??
3. I updated my library using Windows Media, since Sense Music tab seemed to be lacking that feature to update the library altogether. Adding Music, Sense is kinda glitchy and I sometimes just have to soft reset to find a new mp3 just added. Using Windows Media to update your library is a nightmare!! Windows Media took 50++ of my ringtones and placed them into my Music library. then to make it even worst, it added every single sound effect from my phone and all 30 so games with sound effects installed on my SD card. (No one wants to be jamming out, then the music player flips to the next song that just happens to be a Japanese airplane pilot from "Flight Commander" Then another good song. oh back to the Japanese pilot again.) Now i dont know how to untangle this mess. I hate Windows Media. Why wont it just allow me to pick what folder I want to update rather than scan unnecessary files throughout my whole device that i may not want in my library? i get even more angry when of course I can only delete one file at a time from my music library after it just added an unnecessary 200 sound effects; which is now mixed all through my music library list.
___________________________________________________________________________
I am hoping someone here is an expert with the music library and tell me what file to delete to reset the library memory or maybe a way to avoid the media player from adding useless sound effects to my library. perhaps someone that can modify the music player to add features or a program to help modify the music experience.
Thank you
1. I've got this problem too, and I guess it's the lack of sense supporting the ID3v1 or ID3v2 meta data tags. You could use this application to check and edit the data, but -as I said- that's only a guess.
2. No, that's just not possible
3. Open your favorite registry editor, and browse to
Code:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ Software \ Microsoft \ MediaPlayer \ Preferences \ FoldersExcludedFromLibrary
set the value to the folders you would like to exclude from indexing, like:
Code:
FoldersExcludedFromLibrary="\Storage Card\My Documents\My Ringtones;\Storage Card\Program Files\Flight Commander;"
Good luck!
I can't thank you enough for the info to exclude folders in my music file. YES!!! I'll give it a try... i'll probably have to hand delete unwanted stuff? or will it disengage once i type in the excluded?
can i get sense music to update, or do i have to use the dual setup from media player to search and update tags? i used media monkey to update my tags, but sense shows outdated info. its kinda strange it's sticking on the old file tags as well
Does this effect both music players????
3. It's not working with this registry value! Does it have to be to an specify folder or can i make it broad?
(I tried this to eliminate a whole mess of sound making programs and games)
FoldersExcludedFromLibrary="\Storage Card\Program Files" meaning everything within program files are excluded.
***so far it doesn't recognize this value at all. it's frustrating if I have to add each independent file within a game, ringtone, garmin, etc... that's a lot of research and coding

Go to \Application Data\HTC\AudioManager_Eng\ and delete the file AudioManager_Eng.vol that should delete the sense music library, which will be rebuild after a restart of your device. Note that this folder and file may be hidden.

No, it does only effect the windows media player. Have you done a softreset after applying the registry changes? (Then update lib in media player)
Yes, I've been dozens of soft resets after editing my registry. its kinda an automatic thing since i know it must boot the modded material before it can fix/ correct the issue.
In this case, i don't see why i'm adding entries into the registry to exclude folders; if it has absolutely no impact on Sense Music player. I need Sense MP to not play my game sounds effects if i am randomly playing all songs.
I have found a cab that resets my sense library every time i restart my phone, so it doesn't take up additional boot time, with the added benefit of rebuilding the library. I guess truly, i must create a playlist in order to avoid this issue... i wish for a program like the iphone music player but incorporated like Sense MP.

As said before the registrykey only affects the windows media player library settings.
I found these keys:
Code:
HKLM\Software\HTC\AudioManager_Eng\Config
device_scan_path, device_scan_path_0, ring_tone_path
Edit as follows:
Set device_scan_path_path and device_scan_path_path_0 to \Storage Card\Music
Haven't tested it, but it should work. The ringtonepath can be used as a single exclusion path
I was curious if you updated your rom? I, too, started paying more attention to my music player after updating co0kies to 1.8. I have read on dozens of threads about the issues on the sense music player and have experienced most of them at one point or another to the point of not wanting to even use it. Anyway, after updating to the new rom the player and audio eng. miraculously became dramatically more stable. It didn't solve everything but certainly cleaned it up alot. Just wondering....

Look at my signature
i use cht 1.8, but I'm sure that doesn't effect the problems you're facing
yeah, I've updated my Rom a while ago. just updated stock T mobile USA Rom, but i don't think any of this should be an impact because its still sense 2.5 (ver. 2012) within both stock and update.
I think I'll just remove some of the games causing the conflict since i don't even play them. i've cleaned up the music library as good as i could. when i find the cab file, I'll post it on here so others can refresh their library.
