so here goes i have managed to root gingerbread i don't know how if its just for my phone cause i currently live in japan and have the softbank version of DHD so if any one wants to take a look at the rom maybe you can find something to make it easier to root the stock rom and yes when i restart i still have root
[EDIT]
so what you do is use the new down grade method for 2.37 http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1152233
after you do that root with visionary+ then S-off, Super-CID and Sim unlock with Easy Root & S-OFF tool V2.2 http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=857537
make sure you install clockworkmod recovery and you save just in case. now flash stock 2.37 rom http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1056549
once its done check if you have S-off in the boot loader if so install and run gingerbreak http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1044765
it will say that something went wrong check to see if you have Super user if you do try restarting your phone then check if you have Super user again if so install busybox from the market and that's that your rooted. well at least that what worked for me
im not taking credit for this i just found this out by chance thank the people that made the tools
hey, I'm living in japan too...
I would like to know what you did with the ROM
I'm sorry I'm still poor in android
I have the DHD also...
please contact me on my private email mostafa13sabet at yahoo dot com
thanks for cooperation
just download the 2.37 ruu and follow the instructions on the dsixda kitchen's thread. There was really no need to post this in the dev section
with the Japanese DHD if you flash a custom rom you loose mobile network so if you want internet you have to keep the stock rom
HTC Desire (GSM)
I tried to root using Unrevoked3 but it told me that my firmware was too new. My HBOOT is v1.02
Is it best to use the HTC bootloader unlocking tool or do I need to downgrade to HBOOT 0.80 or lower?
I need to ditch my official HTC Gingerbread ROM because the lack of space is killing the phone.
Any help greatly appreciated.

I'm on the way.................
UPDATE:
Just used Revolutionary to S-OFF, ROOT & install CWM
In the process of creating a Nandroid backup of current ROM before going any further.
Still looking for any good, stable and small (sub 100mb) ROMs.

If you're after space to install apps, you're better off looking into 'Apps2SD' for your Desire. Nowadays the Desire is quite handicapped by its memory capacity, however you can use Apps2SD to set up a partition on your SD card to act as app storage, getting around the issue nicely.
Good luck!
Hello,everyone
My DS(2.3.5, hboot 2.00.0002 ,locked, s-on)warranty expired recently,so I want to root my phone.Which method should I use for rooting my phone , htcdev or downgrade my hboot then root it?
Btw,I want to keep all my data in my phone , will root delete all data inside my phone? What App should I use for backup .
I'm Asian and do i need to change me locate to US or Europe ?
Any advice would be appreciated.
Read this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1689631
And do NOT unlock via HTCdev! Use the Revolutionary method. You should also read the Index thread for tutorials on how to do so.
EDIT: I'm not sure about losing all your info when rooting, as I did mine a while ago, so I don't remember, sorry
+1 to the above.
Revolutionary Method is recommended to S-OFF.
Also, It is recommended that after S-OFF, you Change your Hboot to an ENG Hboot (refer INDEX).
To backup all your Apps - Titanium Backup (Pro).
To backup SMS - GO SMS Pro / SMS backup & Restore.
Contacts / Calendar can be backup via your Google Account.
{Save your contacts as Google Contacts & all your calendar entries in Google Calendar}.
Use 4EXT Recovery / CWM Recovery to backup your entire ROM (Nandroid Backup).
So...this method will delete all my data.Btw will I lose my root after I update my phone to 4.0 through ota?
Sent from my HTC Desire S using Tapatalk
If you're S-OFF & Rooted, never install the OTA update from your phone.
Why would you want to wait for the ICS OTA ?
We already have lots of ICS ROM's , based on the leaked RUU / Kernel. . .
Also, i believe , once we have the 4.0 (ICS) kernel sources, all our issues / bugs should
be ironed out. . . by our beloved Dev's.
If I'm not mistaken, you'll get stuck in a bootloop if you do any ota updates. So DON'T ever do any ota updates when you're rooted/S-off.
EDIT: Tapur007 beat me to it He's right though.
I see,then I will.root after.the.ota ,because I.want to try it

You may have issues gaining True S-OFF after OTA.
As of now ,revolutionary only supports 0.98.XXXX Hboots.
I'd suggest you to Root & S-OFF your phone using revolutionary & then flash an ENG Hboot.
You can then try out the custom ROM's available in the Dev Section...
What should I do if I want to go back to HTC orginal Rom?
Should I use something called RUU?

Great guide! Dilemma is that TiBackup doesn't work without root... so you're kinda stuck in a situation where you can't back up until you've rooted, but at risk of losing data when you're doing it...

Yes, after flashing ENG bootloader to replace the Revolutionary one (which doesn't allow you to flash RUUs)

Partially yes... because most OTAs have the new v2.00.xxxx bootloader that revolutionary doesn't support (yet).
To counter that, you CAN downgrade the OTA back to original version using some clever RUU / adb tools, but its not the noobproof way forward.
My advice would be if you want to try a Sense 3.0 ROM, then just S-OFF / root and use one from the forum. (Chances are they'll be better updated with more features and with have none of the carrier branded bloatware).
Plus, you'll get access to the Sense 3.5 ROMs (Endymion! is the most flashed one), Sense 3.6 ROMs (before HTC and carriers even release it on OTAs), Sense 4.0 ROMs (which HTC will probably never release) and AOSP / CM / AOKP ROMs (the way Android should have been released without HTC butchering it with Sense)

Not yet another Sense bashing. You want to keep the thread informative - fine, I see you have lots of energy to waste on those who don't want to read guides (it'll fade pretty soon, when you'll realize that lazy "I-can't-read-a-thread-on-front-page-with-the-same-title-so-I'll-post-another-one" types don't end, and the time you spend on long answers that in the best case repeat detailed already-posted guides is pretty much wasted). But save your Sense bashing to Sense-bashing threads, where other people would counter that. If HTC and Samsung didn't create the skins to hide the ugliness and lack of usability of stock-like Android - many people wouldn't be touching Android, most likely myself included.
No app for non-root phone to backup app+data ?! D:
I looked many post and found that the disadvantage of using Htcdev is my warranty will gone. However,my DS warranty expired now and htcdev is easier than downgrade h-boot.
What should I do now?
I'd still suggest you to downgrade & S-OFF & then flash an ENG Hboot.
Cuz, if you unlock via HTC Dev , each time you flash a custom ROM , you need to flash the kernel (boot.img) separately !
Which guide should I follow? I found 3+ guide for teaching how to downgrade hboot

is it a full stock phone? like never attempted to root/unlock/s-off it?
make sure your response are correct so that we can followup
Phone: HTC Inspire 4g
Had since: March 2011
I see two tools that are recommended to get S-OFF- The HTC SuperTool and the Ace Hack Kit. Which one should I use?
I have a spare MicroSD card which I will root the phone with so I don't lose my data. Is this a viable method? (I dont care about the stuff on the phone's internal drive)
I plan on flashing the Android Revolution ROM. How do I go about doing this? I am a complete newbie to this.
I have no idea about which is the super tool. The best thing is to read and find out which one you feel more comfortable with.
Do not use the htc dev method. It is quite easy to unlock using their method but tends to be complicated to flash different roms. Before rooting, read read and read.
Once you are rooted. Download cwm or romtoolbox or 4ext, the latter being the prefered one here.
Make a backup of your current rom.
Full wipe: wipe data, cache and dalvik and wipe all partitions except sd card.
Flash the rom of your choice. First boot after flashing usually takes about five minutes on average.
Edit: I don't believe the htc method works with the inspire.

best choice is the advanced ace hack kit hands down, if you run into trouble there is a IRC chat to help. But read the instructions several times before you try it.
This is the HTC SuperTool:

Well, I can only tell u that the Advanced Hack Kit is the only game in town for the Inspire. The super tool might work to give you temp root with I donĀ“t think it will give u S-OFF, SuperCID and sim unlock...I am not sure thou.
The Hack Kit works great and you have support in case you get stuck, but it is compulsory that u read the effen manual and the op of the Hack Kit thread.
Take into consideration that replacing bootloaders is a delicate process and that if you mess it you can end up with a $300.- brick in the worst case. Gingerbread shipped devices are no longer compatible with froyo RUU's that where used to gain S-OFF, so I would use the tool that all inspire users have. Needless to say that I am a OP in the IRC channel...

I would personally recommend AceHack hit..It doesn't involve much of a process.I too was a bit confused what to choose, but believe me when u r in this site and search and read properly, everything will be alright. As everyone would say,i too will insist you to research properly about what you are doing..Root and flash as per your choice!!
hi guys ive acquired a desire s, that starts up with the "tim" logo, i believe is a european mobile provider, could i simply root the phone and then install a uk ruu to take it back to a stock uk phone?
i want to maybe keep it stock unrooted after to sell
You don't need to root. Prepare a goldcard and use your preferred RUU, the latest possible. If you want to make 100% sure - temp-root by any means (zergRush) and execute misc_version script to downgrade main version.
All the words that are here should guide your search, if they're not familiar to you - look them up and understand what they do.

surley rooting will be as easy as temp rooting??
dnt i just need to root
then flash the ruu that will the unroot me with the stock rom??
I gave you a short answer. If you want a long one - please read the whole "Desire S guide for newcomers", understand the ways to root, understand that one of the ways gets you nowhere and takes extra steps (unlock) and the other way takes exactly the same step you want to take for perm-root - but you don't need perm-root, and this step and all the following ones will be just wasted. Moreover, perm-rooting won't help you, you'll still need SuperCID.
To cut it short - I gave you a 100% correct and shortest possible way, if you want to do something else - do whatever you want, if you want to know why it's the shortest possible - read and understand what things do and you'll understand it. Specifically read and understand all the steps of rooting method by downgrading and S-OFF.
