Swype on my device is completely lagging. - Captivate General

Even after restarting, resetting to factory settings on the entire device, it still will not let me type with swype.
Here's the video to show it: dailyapper.com /?p=292 (remove the space before the / )

I have an issue that might be related. I rooted, used titanium backup to remove bloatware. Everythings fine but the option to change languages in swype is greyed out and no languages in my list when i hold 'q.'
Help? Reinstalled the apk from system dump too.

Just got my first Android phone yesterday (the Captivate) so I'm probably not much of an authority here as other people are but I'll try to help as much as I can.
You might have to uninstall and reinstall Swype on your phone...as far as instructions on how to do it as well as the .apk for it, you can find them somewhere here in the forums. If you need help trying to find it, I'll help as much as I can.
Maybe changing the UI from TouchWiz to something else as I did may help with lag in general. I switched to LauncherPro and it helped with "lag" when moving between home screens.
If all else fails, head back to the store and try to get it exchanged. Could be a glitch with your phone.
As I said, I'm no expert at all but just want to help as much as I can.

What have you installed on your phone? I installed Dolphin Browser HD and it caused all sorts of slow downs on my phone even when it wasn't running! Swype is perfectly fast for me. Do you still have the samsung touch wiz UI running?

Dolphin Browser HD slows mine down as well. As well as the TouchWiz UI.

I have it rooted but have not done anything to it. Have a handful of market Apps installed. I reset to factory settings already and still had the same issue. Going to do a complete system dump back to factory when I get home later today. But it was doing this before I rooted it.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App

any idea on what might have caused it? what apps have you install? I may be having same issue.

did a complete whipe and erased all data.
it's back to normal now.
Didn't get normal the first whipe, though, weird.

and after a days use and only installing about 5 apps - it's freezing the same way again. I am going to go return it.

Locked droid

Not sure if this is the place to get an answer, but I have a big problem. HelixLauncher has locked my Droid Getting a pop-up message: "Helixlauncher has stopped unexpectedly, please try again" with a small command window that says "Force Close". Touching Force Close just brings back the message again and no other commands are possible. Tried removing battery, but same issue repeats. Phone is currently unusable until I find a solution. Please help.
You could use adb to remove helixlauncher. That is, if you didn't remove the stock launcher.
adb remount
adb shell
rm /system/app/ whatever the name of the helix launcher app is

sounds like someone should have nanded ..... if whats posted above doesn't work, re-flash your rom.....take it as a lesson, nanding is your best friend
Your, ah, Droid? Not that I think you should be stoned and chased out for posting about something non-N1, but...
That aside, were you using just plain HelixLauncher or HelixLauncher2? The latter was developed for the N1 and, as I understand, doesn't play nice with Droids.
N1 in same trouble
Although tech savvy, still new to Android & N1.
Thought I needed HelixLauncher and installed it on to my N1 w/ 2.1 u1. Was working ok, but I decided to drop screen size to 1.
It's also possible, but unsure about this, that I tried installing HL2.
In short ended up with unending prompt and the same issues as listed in original post.
Looking into resetting, using pwr+vol.dwn. Is that what was meant by re-flashing, or that's something harsher? Couldn't find what 'nanding' means.
Also, the N1 is not rooted, whatever that means again.
Ended up eventually resetting phone to factory values. Reconfiguring phone now..
Actually, if you're fast enough you can stop this fc loop.
You need to get to Settings | Applications | Manage Applications and then clear the defaults for HelixLauncher so that you can select the regular launcher.
But how with constant fc? I did it this way:
When HL fc's it will briefly throw you out to the last screen you had active before it tries to reload (you only get half a second or so). The time that you do get should be enough to enter one or so commands... so after fc #1, press close then quickly hit the menu button and 'Settings', HL will launch again and fc again, after pressing close you should see the settings page, hit Applications, HL will launch again and fc, press close and hit Manage Applications... etc, etc.
Painful but perhaps better than a rebuild if you have no other way.
YMMV
Yeah, I tried, but wasn't fast enough. It's like the wild wild west.. the slowest gun lost.
It seems either Android or the launcher should offer a more graceful bailout in scenarios like this. Seems like a serious bug to me. And I've written a few of those myself..

lol, yeah, the gun slinging took me a bit of time!
And the problem is a recognised one BUT the instructions are clear... wipe the data before reverting from Helix to stock and when upgrading roms... the dev has tried to put failsafes in but short of deleting the data there are few options...
But, since the warning is in place, I don't think we can call it a bug, rather an understood limitation... painful nevertheless.
PS - if you've got Set CPU installed you could try and get to that and set your speeds a low as possible, this will give you more time... still requires the gun though.
Did you install it as a system app? Launcher2.apk ?
The suckiest option is to always do a factory reset, as long as you didn't flash the helix launcher. This will delete the Helix Rom, but it will also delete everything from your phone. Proceed with caution!

Installed from app store. Went searching for Helix and got 2 versions. Installed 1st and was trying to figure out how much I liked it. Noticed it made things faster, so I was loving that. But then decided to see if settings->scrn size option allowed me to jam more apps on the front page. So, I was playing with that, I believe {set it to 1?}.
As I would be hitting the Home page, it kept asking me how I wanted to complete that action, Default or Helix? So, I made Helix the default action. Then at one point, I was unable to return to the Home page.
Misery followed..
Now, I see from djmcnz's posting that there is supposed to be some sort of warning somewhere, but none on the App store intro of the app.
In either case, imho, it's not ok for an app to risk this kind of loss of functionality, not to mention data.
FYI, I have not left any of the negative comments that show in the app store. I understand the developers behind this app are proud of their work and rightly so. I however will not risk it again. It's not that important to me to be bleeding edge.

Delete stock app

Can you delete the stock browser after root and not have any problems
Sent from my T-Mobile G2 using XDA App
It should be perfectly safe to remove the stock browser. Unlike IE on Windows for example, nothing in Android actually relies on the native browser code. All applications wishing to transfer to your browser go where you tell them to.
I imagine you may have some funky issues later down the line.

Well I don't wanna be mean, but I am gonna say this is false. I have had G1, N1, and now G2x i have removed alot of things from my phones and even my latest the G2x. And even though you shouldn't have any problems with removing system apps remember now that your root you should make sure to back-up your phone, because you could mess with some setting or god knows what and be stuck in a bootloop. Also, instead of actually uninstalling apps you could always freeze them to make receiving ota updates easier(Cause gingerbread is right around the corner)
P.S. didn't realize you have a G2x too! beware of removing the my t-mobile and my device apps because they might throw you into this weird force close free for all.

[Q] Titanium Backup Restore Issue

(First off, this is my first post so my apologies if I've done anything improper here)
Ok, so there are a lot of posts about Titanium Backup restore issues but I haven't quite been able to fix my problem. I'm not trying batch restores or anything complicated like that, and the advice I've seen in the past and on the Titanium Backup FAQs doesn't work. Here's my problem:
Yesterday I backed up then uninstalled "Facebook for HTC Sense 1.0" but then realized that my phone (HTC Incredible) uses that to link my contacts with their Facebook profiles (for pictures, birthday notifications, etc.). So today I went to restore it and Titanium Backup just hangs (there is a spinning wheel on the left and it says "Restoring App: 'Facebook for HTC Sense 1.0'") It does this whether I try restoring just the app or app+data.
I have root and updated busybox from the "Problems" button in the app. Many people on here have said to go to "Troubleshooting settings" and change the "App processing mode" but when I go there that option is greyed out. I'm sure this would work (it has for others it seems), but I don;t know what to do since it is greyed out.
I thought about reinstalling Titanium Backup, but I don't want to lose my data to restore from. I don't know how that works.
Anyone know what to do?
UPDATE: Well I don't think reinstalling would help, since an update just came through the market. I figure an update would've fixed anything that a reinstall would have. Also, to add a little more information on the problem, I was able to restore "Adobe Reader 9.0.1" but not able to restore "Footprints 1.10" (another HTC built-in app)
I have the same problem on my HTC Desire.
After installing the latest CyanogenMod, I wanted to return a couple of the HTC-supplied apps. Titanium Backup gets superuser permissions and seems happy, but then freezes at 0% restore. The application processing option in preferences is always greyed out.
Hi guys, one thing that I learned while migrating to Cyanogenmod is that restoring HTC apps will really hurt stability and possibly lead to bootlooping, as there is no HTC sense framework for their apps to work correctly. AFAIK, there is no way around that. I learned the hard way that restoring all apps and data just will not work between AOSP roms and Sense roms. I'm sorry I can't offer more help on it, but you'll need to pick and choose your apps and data and make sure you don't bring Sense/HTC stuff into Cyanogenmod. I know, it's frustrating! Good luck guys!
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
We'll my problem is slightly different because I'm still using sense. I didn't load any new roms. I removed it and then tried to restore the next day without making any other changes. So why won't my apps restore?
Sent from my ADR6300 using XDA App
what did you remove? was it a system app or something you installed from the market? system apps, when "removed" even when backed up, don't reinstall from my experience. I never had any problem reinstalling any user apps that were properly backed up though.
I'm wondering if this is something to do with HTC's "S on" extra security.
Need to read up on this — anyone have a good resource about it? It seems a bit more obscure than just rooting, with some unreliable-looking websites about it. And I'm coming at this as a total n00b
But the system folder does indeed seem to have some kind of extra write-protection going on, even when accessing it as root.
I have a G2X and I have also learned the hard way that Titanium will not restore system apps. So the problem your having has nothing to do with Sence. If you search the for forums hard enough there is info on the topic
Sent from my LG-P999 using XDA App
So... If I do a factory reset on my phone then, will all be fixed? Or does uninstalling it remove it from wherever the factory reset would pull from?
I'll probably need to root it again after, but I just want that "Facebook for HTC Sense" app back so my contacts link with their facebook profiles for continually updating phone numbers, profile pictures, etc.

Problem Solved
I flashed Liberation Enhanced v1.00 yesterday and everything is fixed. Liberation does all that I wanted to do in the first place: have Sense without the bloatware. It was my first time flashing a new ROM and I'm happy to say it went very well
(Now once I get enough posts in, I can add it to my signature like everyone on here seems to like to do)
guess you fixed the issue, but dealing with Titanium Backup, i sometimes have it hanging when i freeze/unfreeze or sometimes it hangs/freezes when backing up/restoring. in the settings there's like some different restoration methods it lets you choose (Direct, Indirect, and something else), but switching it to Indirect Method fixed the issue for me, so just incase someone else runs into a similar problem. im on a SGS4G.

I think what you're talking about may be part of the "App processing mode" option that I said was greyed out for some reason on my phone.

[Q] How do you go about setting your phone up after new ROM?

It seems like every time I set up a new ROM, it takes me forever to get everything set back up and I always miss something, contacts are missing, apps go all wonky... I used to backup all my apps and data, but a lot of the time the new ROM will download many of the apps I had, so when I restore the backup of my Apps, it screws everything all up.
So I guess my questions is... Whats the most sufficient, easiest, most thorough way of restoring all apps and whatnot on a new ROM?
For the basics use the market app to backup your sms to google cant remember what its called, backup your contacts to google (highly recommend) that way you will never loose them.
For apps i would only ever backup downloaded apps with titanium backup pro. System apps can be a pain in the ass to restore.
Other than that everything else is fairly easy...

Hmm... Ive never gone about backing up SYSTEM apps, but like paid apps, that Ive bought and backed up, seem to get all jacked when I restore or reinstall them. Ive tried a few different methods of restoring my system and never get it to go smoothly. Didnt know if there was an easier way. Thanks for the info!
You might want to upon first boot of the new ROM, bypass initial setup with the tap corners trick, restore apps with Titanium, then resume the setup process. Market will see your apps as already having been installed and not bugger everything up.
Good idea! Hadnt thought of that. Will try with my next rom. Thanks! Anymore tips out there?
First thing I thought of was nandroid backup using clockworkmod on a rooted device. I have restored my phone countless times and everything restores exactly how it was.
sometime i got errors while restoring with CWM..
Titanium is still the recommended.
When I first started out, I actually had to make a list and check it off. Eventually, I found some apps that would cover those items (Titanium, etc), but still even with that I have to manually go in and do a few settings. MIUI ROMS have a backup program (I used MIUI on my HD2) and it seemed to do a decent job.
I usually keep a current back up of all apps from market(not system apps) made from my backup pro. Everything else gets a fresh start.
When I switch android versions ei, from gingerbread to ics, nothing gets restored, everything is a fresh install from market.
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA App
Was it through CWM rom manager or manual recovery mode? I mean did you install a kernel that installed cwm or did you install rom manager? After a couple weeks walking around blind I figured out that flashing the right kernel gets cwm to work without problems.
Restoring system settings is a big no no. It is just asking for trouble as with each update the source code is changed and then you are restoring outdated settings that may or may not be there.
TIBU is still the main app restore program. As for restoring settings that is never advices. Well unless you like troubleshooting random errors lol
Thanks for ALL the replies! Some stuff I hadnt thought of in here, and some stuff to try. If anyone else has any more info, please feel free to share. I have heard that restoring settings is asking for trouble, so luckily Im not too picky about those. I really only change the haptic feedback and stuff off the bat, anyway. It also sucks losing all my WiFi networks and having to have all my friends dig up their network passwords.
Anyway, gonna try out some of this stuff today as Im sick of the ROM I just flashed. Still waiting on MIUI getting that MMS workin

Samsung Galaxy always becomes slow and laggy

Hey guys
i need some tips or feedbacks. So ive been with the Galaxy since the S3, and each one ends up becoming the same. They are great when i first get them, then within the first 2 months, they pretty much turn into crap. The UI isnt smooth, things take a while to open, apps dont transition to another smoothly, opening texts,, going back and forth between texts and apps arent the best and i constantly get problems to the point i need to do a warranty exchange with tmobile.
Do you guys experience the same or are you phones super fast and fluid? Even with a rooted phone i experience the same. Whenever i test out my friends iphone, everything seems to be super quick and fluid, just not customizable and limited to what you can do
What can i do to improve my phone or this is just how these galaxies are?
Thanks!
Hiya
I find it's good to reboot every so often, and I also use the built in Smart Manager to Clean All, and I don't experience any lag.
I do run my phone pretty clean though and don't have a million useless Apps which does tend to slow it down.
Reboot and use the smart manager from time to time and you should be good to go. I also find that using Package Disabler, Nova Launcher and Anti virus Apps SLOW DOWN my phone and make it buggy and laggy.
I have now wiped it and left it fully stock and it multi tasks properly and is super quick.

Seriously, cleanmaster?? Delete immediately! If you're rooted, why don't you freeze the bloats? Use amplify and greenify combo! Can't believe a rooted user uses cleanmaster
Clearing cache every time is not good and results in stutters as cache is meant to make loading times faster and usually only cleaned if there are signs of corruption!

So if you're no longer rooted, you can't use titanium backup. No need to root the S6 as you won't be able to update and rooting without using custom roms isn't that great.
Use package disabler pro! It's enough. Put apps to always optimize in battery settings. Use a custom launcher like Apex or Nova. Update everything. Clear cache in storage menu and reboot. You should be good.
Try leaving at least 1GB out of your internal memory free, although its impact is not proved!

no, i meant i used titanium backup when i was rooted. im no longer rooted because i had to update my phone in order to fix some problems i was having. When i was rooted, i used a custom rom, twisted sixx version 3. i want to reroot my phone again, but i want to know if i need to download new files again to root if what i used last time is ok. last time i rooted was in septempber so my files are from that time frame. If not ok, where can i go to get the new files i need to root again? also with your phone, is everything usually fast and fluid or do you come across the problems i mention earlier as well?

Sorry can't help with newer root methods!
I'm completely stock and using package disabler pro and app optimizer. It's not buttery smooth like a Nexus or Motorola, but it still is a fast experience, i.e, rarely any scrolling stutters. Try putting animations to 0.5x or 0/off.

Or he could use Kernel Adiutor and set Androids build in kill scheduler to free ram
Sent from my LG-LS740 using XDA Free mobile app
My little tips :
First. Speed up your android device by *not* installing any speed booster app.
2. Android is smart enough to force close background services when more ram is needed. And restart them when ram hungry process (e.g heavy game) ends. Do some research, it's a very very bad idea to manually kill background apps and services. Doing so will just decrease both your performance and battery.
3.Stock Samsung provided applications gives better performance and battery life. They also use ram more efficiently. try using stock launcher, stock keyboard, stock E-mail app, etc.
Also every other launcher that uses vertical scrolling will have lags. (Apex,Action,Nova and even Google Now Launcher)
4. Manually clearing cache is also bad idea. Imagine you put your charger on your desk to quickly access it when needed (cache), then someone puts it back to drawer every time :| (Clearing catche)

Thanks for the tips. i already use stock email, stock interenet stock everything. My battery dies extremely quick with minimal use, as oppose to when i had it rooted, which was significantly better. with minimal use today, its been off the charger for 5 hours and im already at 50%. i also dont force close. i just click that menu button and press close all when nothings being used, or are you saying thats not good to do?
i have mine for 10 months, and i don't regret it at all, i had a galaxy S2 and S4 before and i always said i won't get another samsung because of the lag, but this time i made the right choice...the phone flies through everything, loading apps takes no time, opening apps really fast, the truth is this is the first galaxy that didn't lag after a couple of months, at least not for me, there are sometimes some frame drops, but in general it's really fast, i use stock apps, i restart my phone about every week, the battery isn't that good, 3-4 SOT...so not bad but not that good, because this is a phone you wanna keep using all the time and then suddenly the battery die.....the truth is if i had the money now i would get the NOTE5/ S6 EDGE PLUS...because of the battery and big screen, other than that it's perfect....best screen, camera, the new TW is really good....

yeah, but this time it's different, the phone is as fast as it was when i bought it....really fast, my old galaxy devices lagged when opening even the dialer, not to mention the gallery, takes 2 seconds to load...now it's instant....
