How to change the default call picture? - EVO 4G Themes and Apps

Could someone help me with this? Is it a regular PNG, is it a apk, or what? I have no idea at all of where to find it...
The picture I'm talking about is the Android that is on the screen when you make calls to numbers that don't have a contact photo.
Any and all help is, of course appreciated.

i would love to be able to change that, hope its possible

its a png that needs to be changed in the phone apk

I think it's in framework-res.apk
Check /system/framework/framework-res.apk, unzip it and look inside, it should be somewhere there.

@ McCurt: Where is that located?
@Genius: Ok, I'll check that now

It is in apps>phone.apk
res>drawable-hdpi
image is called phone_default_icon.png
needs to be 480x618 attached to the one I am using... not sure why it attached as a .jpg so here is a screen shot

Hey thank you. I found it, and I've edited, zipped up, and signed the apk file, but, for some reason, it won't let me install it.
Is there anyone who can take a look over this and see what I did wrong?
I'm using HTC Sync to push the file through to install it, but it's not letting me do it on the phone end.

Try this:
Code:
adb remount
adb shell rm /system/app/Phone.apk
adb push *your apk's name* /system/app/Phone.apk

I don't know about doing it as an installable apk file. I take a flashable .zip, open it (not extract... just double click into it) browse to the apk, drag and drop the new .png, and close it back up. Then I just flash the zip using Rom Manager.
EDIT: I see Geniusdog showed you how to push it

Push the original apk back to your phone and reboot
take a copy of the original and then try inserting the .png into the "phone.apk" without extracting or changing it... and repush it to your phone

You sir, are a SAINT.
That works, but I know how I screwed it up thinking back... I forgot that it was a system apk (total brain fart) and unsigned and resigned the apk and all of that.
Anyways, thanks a lot guys, and here it is:

Nice job... Looks great

Thanks. I used this on my girl friends evo. I made the android guy pink

in alot of the roms I've used, there have been 3g variations in the files, just not in the right place or named correctly for CDMA. You can grab those if you want or create your own. Name them the same as the ones you want to replace. Open the apk with winzip or whatever app you use, find the files you want to replace, then drag the new ones into the apk.
If you get a prompt about encryption, choose other, then no encryption.
After that, build a folder structure just as if the app would be in the phone.
ex: system/framework/
- place the apk inside of the framework folder, and zip it.
- next you need to sign the zip, I'd use flipz's kitchen
- install via RA (place on sd card, reboot into recovery and install)

beyond that, you might want to make a request in the thread where you got the ROM.

hey man thanks!!
but, back to the long way. i found the right file, (using regaw mod, comes with the 3g icon) what do i change it to?
thank you for the zip I booted into recovery and flashed it but i still have the EV?
it's not a zip you flash. Download metamorph from the market, and install it from there.
and mountain... I just used the default 3g icons in framework-res.apk and placed them into com.htc.resources.apk with the metamorph
thankx guys I got it working
no problem
I installed MetaMorph, but at the beginning it says start basic checks to see if your phone can run, and it just hangs there and says its not responding, asks to wait or FC, please help

ATTN THEMERS.. Pushing Framework-res.apk = Success!

Now that we have Root and the amazing recovery tool... I decided it was time to test things out. No we dont have MetaMorph, but until then... The "old fashioned" way will work. I pulled the framework, made a quick modification to the BATTERY icons and pushed it back... and BAM!! Blue battery!
So far i see no adverse effects... so i will be pushing my fully themed Framework-res.apk to my INC later this evening. Proof? See pic...with BLUE battery! Thats just the start of my theme!

All the images are located within framework-res.apk, But there are several other places that you can edit xmls to make further changes. you can extract them directly from there, and replace them using 7zip without need to sign the apk. The most common are found in /res/drawable hdpi/
Before experimenting i would suggest reading up on Patch 9 files. Those require more than just editing the png.

To my knowledge that requires editing the Services.jar file. There are scripts out there for editing this file, but the short answer for now is NO. (unless you're a java guru)

2. push framework-res.apk file to root of sdcard

I concur with ALWAYS do a back up...
no need to push file to SDCard though, or use busybox cp
Just push it directly from its location.
Reboot to recovery...
Mount /system (under partitions menu)
open cmd prompt and type:
adb push (file location) /system/framework/framework-res.apk
example :
adb push c:\android\framework-res.apk /system/framework/framework-res.apk

FYI i will be sharing my modded framework-res.apk shortly, working out a few things. My version will change ALL status icons, battery meter, signal bars, and a whole lot more (basically everything GREEN)to the Blue you see in the battery in the pic.
Having a lil trouble....
Ok so i managed to edit almost everything in framework, (still working on the.9.pngs, they take sooo much time)..... But im having an issue...
Hopefully some one here can help me solve this. Unlike the moto, i cant seem to get the signal meter, or the 3g/1x/etc icon to change. all other icons are acting as they should but these stay the same. Ive re-copied them, and pushed the apk 3 times...
Anyone with ideas...

Simple XDA splash, black

7/11: I have posted new versions of each. The white is toned down a bit to match the HTC EVO emblem, and not be overwhelming. And both fonts have been smoothed so it looks much better.
I also changed the file in each zip to contain the correct name so those of you having problems should be able to run the command without changing filenames.
Mirrors also added!
Hey guys, I made this to represent xda when I boot
Thought I would share
The files attached can be flashed through bootloader.
Boot your phone into fastboot (hold vol up key while powering phone on, select fastboot)
Now open command. To verify your computer is recognizing your phone, type
Code:
fastboot devices
This should list your device. After that, you want to unzip the file you downloaded and place it in your android sdk tools folder.
Now, back in command, change to your tools directory and enter
Code:
fastboot flash splash1 splash.raw565
Remember to back up anything you don't wanna lose, and nandroid. Not responsible for anything that happens if you don't
That said I have flashed it and it works.. enjoy

If not maybe it needs the original raw file in there too.. I didn't think it should tho. If you wanna try I have attached it. You could try dropping that in tools too and running the same command. Even though thats not the file its looking for.. so it leads me to believe one of previous should fix it
It looks awesome. I think I will leave that one on there for a while. Well at least a couple of days

Instructions on editing the sprint banner can be found here -> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=708419
To do this mod you wouldnt delete the original png...you need to replace it with the modded png file. I would make and save backup of the original on your local hard drive that way if you ever wanted to go back to stock or create a new banner with a different image you would have a copy of the non modified stock png to work with.
Thanks, I got the header and closer .png changed. Now to get rid of the pesky Sprint lettering.

For those looking for an easier way to do this you can make a flashable file here --> http://circle.glx.nl/
Oh wow! Can you do that with the Blacy emotes?
trying!
@martijua i just tried it and let see if it worked. rebooting now!!!!
It worked great!!
@GENEius what are blacy emotes?
Update i saw the" blacky emotes" and i would say yes you can if you had all the icons the right sizes
I decided to try other icons and i found out that....
- nandroid backup is a must just in case you mess anything up!
- If it is not the right size 24 x 24 px it will show a blank space instead of an icon.
-While doing this process you will see a FC error but that's ok just adb reboot
POSSIBLE CAUSES FOR FC ERRORS!
- If you do not adb pull before you abd push.
- Receiving a text while trying this out.
Not 100% sure because both of these things happend within the same try!
-I noticed that i actually put >PNG instead of .png and that may have been the problem.
NOW IT"S WORKING WILL UPDATE WITH A IMAGE!
SINCE I AM ACTUALLY DOING A LOT FOR THIS AND WILL TRY TO DO MORE I WILL CREATE MY OWN POST!

Yes that could be possible provided the dimensions are correct and you name them accordingly.

+1 on that!
Is this something that should not be done on a custom rom? I tried on my phone with the latest fresh rom and all of my contact disappeared.

Google contacts? Make sure that your google account is still there...if it isnt re-add/sign back into google account.
Hm. I can use any pixel size. HTC Evo 4G seems to support most (I'm on 40x40 now). Using kawaii kitty faces from MSN :3
Anyway of doing this with APK Manager? Or NinjaMorph?
****..I wish someone could get emoji working! Seen a few threads about it but seems kinda shoddy.
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App

well....use root explorer, navigate to system/app and extract the framework, replace the emoticons, and copy-paste the mms app back where it came from
Reboot
you're done
thank you
These are awesome thank u!
Just wanted to add my testimony.
This works, but it will remove all your accounts from the Accounts section, thus removing you contacts, and resetting your wallpaper, and probably other personal settings.
However, setting them back was easy, and re-adding the account was also easy. Got all my contacts back and so on.
Thanks martijua!
http://circle.glx.nl/ is gone. Any alternatives?
ATM I don't have time to deal with missing stuff and restoring them back
P.S. Which way of those two mentioned exactly leads to losing some data? ADB or RootExplorer way?
New Emoticon Pack
Here is a pack of Emoji Emoticons if anyone wants to try out.
Do it at your own risk, i am not responsible for any damage.
O.K., that's cool - but is it possible to "replace with nothing" or simply turn them off?
What happens if i try to put empty files with png extension or blank png files or something - I believe that won't work...?
i want Sony Ericsson c901 & k800 smiley pack on my Samsung Galaxy Ace..
how do i get that?
