[Collection] MTD Roms Thread - G1 Android Development

As many of you know, Firerat is a genius, and has made an amazing implementation of lbcoder's idea for mtd partitions in this thread below (the link)
Disclaimer said:
You must read this thread and understand that these are not conventional, easy-to-flash roms. You must understand how to do the process in the thread below, as well as a comprehensive idea of what is going on at each step, and so on. Good luck, feel free to use the following list of roms to your disposal.
If you don't have the experience to do this, stay out of the thread until you've figured it out. I don't like stupid questions that are answered by this simple link:

This is the place collection of roms I will make that work with this hack, and are unusually fast and stable, due to no symlinks and no a2sd. People please keep posting your mods, i'm just the keeper of this thread because i'm online often and can update op. Thanks to the community for this amazing method.
Firerat said:
you only need to flash the recovery patch once, each time you want to resize
you must reboot each time you resize
you must fastboot erase system -w each time you resize, or for convenience use clockworks partition formats (before reboot)
you must use the bootpatcher, unless the ROM is pre-patched with AutoMTD
if you need many apps, keep a2sd
if you want to remove a2sd (old style, pre cm5), you must replace with
Code:
#!/system/bin/sh
cm.filesystem.ready 1
read the custom MTD thread, your question is probably already answered

bro are you saying that i can run sense hero 1.4 themed (which by the way is also my favourite sense rom for the htc magic) with this this new txt file that will make it run smoother then before??? This was the 1st rom I ever used after my magic was rooted.

guaranteed. Turn off compcache, too and it'll fly. You have to install and patch the awesome recovery image in firerat's thread linked above. it's pretty complicated for most users, but if you can/already have done it, then go ahead. firerat makes it easy!

So is the patch already integrated into the ROM? Just download and flash? If so, you are my "hero"

that would be really awesome! but wow that guide given by Sir Firerat looks complicated to me I'll wait to see if a more simplified instruction is supplied lol. anyways thanks for your hard work brother

haha no you still need the custom recovery and the sdcard file...
and the fr boot patch.
I've just rearranged these roms for optimal performance with the above configuration.

I vote for FR's MTSlide
would you added to the collection?
EDIT: I just tested SenseHero and runs really smooth but, oh surprise when I realized it is Firmware 1.5 still
also you have to type: "setprop cm.filesystem.ready 1" on every reboot or it won't boot.. very inconvenience (b/c of adb)
thanks for sharing this anyways

Hey if you could help me get this to work, i could add it into my rom and you could include it. that way you don't only have sense roms and you can have a flying froyo.
This would also be good because i yanked the a2sd script from my rom and recommended people use the mtd hack if they needed more space, and if they needed MORE space then they could add the a2sd script themselves.
I've tried previously to get the mtd part hacks going in my tests. but never successfully got it. this was back using the froyo aosp. When i tried doing the mtd hack it wouldn't run scripts on boot. (that's not good ) and my data size never changed
i had flashed the recovery1_1, and added the automtd stuff that firerat had created and posted in our thread for the rom (replaced the boot.img and edited the updater-script to flash it correctly).
I notice that now there might be newer stuff, so if he got that working, great. let me know the proper procedure for a cm6 based rom, and i'll try it and offer it for a test.
Thanks man, hope this works out!
Edit: well i tried this all again on my own. and got it working.
now i can't "touch the android to begin".. i just get "ignoring touch event because phone interface was null" from logcat. and i just did a fastboot wipe. ? do you think it's because of this? turns out it was because some idiot (me) decided to replace the phone.apk. but didn't notice he replaced it with phone.zip........... hahahahaha
anyways i now have a working MTD Froyo rom that's good news right? well, you would think so, but there is better news. I didn't think this rom could get faster. well damn was i wrong. this MTD hack really sped up not just the rom, but the boot up (not first boot).
Here's my post with my rom in it
There is no theme on it (yet). so flash any theme you want. metamorphs are recommended. dont blame me if you flash a theme through recovery and get a bootloop.

Hmm, mine says Insufficient storage space when I try to install things. Was I not supposed to flash firerat's no-A2SD patch?

ummm no. firerat's no-a2sd patch is completely unrelated. this if for firerats custom MTD patch.. lol
and that sounds like it was because you tried flashing one of those hero roms onto yourphone and you don't have room for it in /system. those roms need to use the mtd patch to increase system so they fit. mine decreases /system a tiny bit (default with mtd patch)

I can fit the hero rom ANYWAY, I just wanted to see if there was a speed boost. and I'm pretty sure I followed instructions correctly.
I installed the firerats no-a2sd patch because i have no ext partition, and some roms don't boot without one and then continud to flash the custom MTD patch

the point of this rom is that you don't even need ext on ANY phone, g1 or mytouch... so the patch might have broken the a2sd bypass... lol

Oh dude i think you should include in the OP info about the two different types of mtdpartmap.txts and the recovery patches, just so we have a few less noob questions. Just say that they should make sure that the type of mtdpartmap.txt corresponds to the type of recovery patch they used, and example "this goes with this", "that goes with that"

Enjoy,
Suggestions.
If I may:
- Add Plurk, including the widget.
- Render the notification tray transparent.
- Implement EXT4 support.
- Be sure that the Compcache modules are correct.
- Linux-swap supported AND/OR back_swap supported.
- Add Stocks, including the widget. (It's not that much of a resource hog.)
- Add Spare Parts.
- Keep all standard wallpapers to avoid gallery selection force closes.
- Keep all media to avoid "Ringdroid" or "Rings Extended" force closes.
- Keep the standard lock screen w/ throttle bar. (It's gorgeous.)
- Be sure that the latest kernel is the BFS-222 kernel. (Cyanogen's latest is.)
- (Opt.) Twisted's "black dialer."
- (Opt.) 2.73 based-build number. (Modaco's latest WWE dump.)
If you can make that happen before your release...or keeps your initial release HELD OFF...that's fine, trust me ---> it'll be worth it!
The community would be going nuts if you can make some of that happen!
Seriously, if you make at least half of that happen, I'll flash this ROM to both of my devices, and promote the hell outta' this.
Thanks.
EDIT: The reason for the Modaco dump suggestion is because he has the only build that DOES NOT force close while using the People Search function in the contacts. That's a big deal. IMO.
haha am i following you or the other way around. i Used your rom on my Wing, so i will be sure to check this one out.

That's strange, I've test it before uploading, the file must have gotten corrupted or something.
I'm going to download it and try again.

Bro this thing is very fast. And as what you said its a full verison so it might be a bit slow. But i dont think its slow at all. I have a class 2 4gb. Its still fast! Getting my class 6 in 3 days
I did notice one thing, with JACHEROski builds the prediction on QWERTY mode prediction dont work. But that is not a problem to me i can just use better keyboard while this whole thing gets figured out why it wont work on texting mode only.
But hey other than that this ROM is go for.
Thanks.

Man, I'm starting to hate megaupload.
It should be the same file.
As for changes, I'm going to wait until tomorrow after folks have had time to download it and provide their feedback.
I personally like the other build I have of JaCs, but it looks as if people want MoDaCo rom.

Premise:
1. Performance degradation with HD roms (and regular ones as well) occur when essential parts of the device's operation are from the sd card, instead of working as much as possible from the internal memory.
2. Deodexed roms render a substantial part of the /system partition into a bloated archive, since no apk or jar file is actually used. Everything is odexed and copied into the dalvik-cache, which leads to -
3. The dalvik-cache of a deodexed rom is much larger than that of an odexed rom. So now we have large portions of the system partition that are not used, and a clogged data partition.
4. So we use a2sd, a2sd+, d2ext or d2we - and essentially, what we get is that almost nothing is being run from the internal memory. What a waste.

If this is true, only intensive testing will reveal. So lets give it a shot.

Applications and system framework files don't run from jar or apk files. They run from odex files within the Dalvik Cache. So placing the Dalvik Cache on the sd card causes performance degradation, and keeping these jar and apk files in the internal memory is a waste of space.
In this method, we try to keep in the internal memory only the files the phone actually uses during its runtime, and move to the sd card all the archive files that are not in use.
Quadrant tests will probably not reveal an improved performance. They don't test for what we have done. But the user experience is much, much better.

This was my Idea after reading this (but bad english [writing])
Quadrant Scores are not very itresting.... User Experience counts more.... I take a look now ;-) Few minutes and i can give a little feedback ;-)

I am assuming this means the black out is over... This seems like an excellent direction to be heading, and the logic sounds sound! It is bed time on my side of the world, but I will definitely be testing this one out in the morning (or once i can slack off at work...)
For people who struggle with running commands, there is a windows app for flashing hboots/recoverys - fast boot commander which is a fairly easy way to proceed...
Big thanks to baadnewz (and co) for being so prolific in work of late.... keeps us compulsive rom swappers happy...

That's the one problem with a tiny cache partition. You cannot have too many market downloads at once, and you cannot flash a new radio with a zip file. I sent a message to the wonderful people at alpharev, asking for a new partition layout. If this type of rom gains traction, they will probably accommodate us.
Device booted very fast And market is working.
Very responsive.

It can be used without any need to have any Google application installed. Linked below is a package that has come from another Android project that restore the Google parts. CyanogenMod does still include various hardware-specific code, which is also slowly being open-sourced anyway.
All the source code for CyanogenMod is available in the CyanogenMod Github repo. And if you would like to contribute to CyanogenMod, please visit out Gerrit Code Review. You can also view the Changelog for a full list of changes & features.

NOW INTRUCTIONS--[--Unlock bootloader and root your explorer (if you haven't already) follow this link http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1415223 to root. Dont create a partition just yet.
--Download cm-7-20120807-UNOFFICIAL BUILD #4-pico.zip from mediafire link below and copy it anywhere on sdcard.
--Download gaaps from link below and copy it on sdcard
--Boot into recovery
-- (optional but recommended) go to backup and restore and select backup. This will backup your phone just as it is so that if u ever wanna revert back you can just restore from recovery. (Thanx Liverpool_fan for tip)
--Go into mounts and storage and format /system and /boot and come back and wipe data/factory reset (even if you have any custom rom installed)
--Select Install zip from sdcard-> choose zip from sdcard-> browse to where you have copied the zip file and select it
--Wait for the installation to complete and download latest kernel from link below and flash it in recovery. (format of kernal MDD so update to the latest one)
--flash gaaps to install basic google apps.
--Now select reboot and wait for your phone to boot up.
--If you want to move your dalvik cache to sdext first you will have to partition your sd card. 512mb partition is enough. Use minitoolwizard to partition your sdcard. Partition it in only ext2, ext3 or ext4 format because fat32 is not supported. You can also use recovery (advanced>partition sdcard) to partition but it will erase all data on your sdcard so back it up.
--Now dowload a2sd.zip (credit- Sakindia) and flash it through recovery. You can find a2sd.zip where the kernals are uploaded (check below)
--Reboot and go into Terminal emulator and type "a2sd cachesd" (without quotes)
--Wait for the working to finish and reboot. You have 148mb internal memory free now. :good:
--Alternatively people are saying that s2e is more stable. So download s2e from play store.
--check everything except application data. Reboot.
NOTE: Either flash a2sd or install s2e.
--Enjoy.!!
(OPTIONAL)--
--Download titanium backup and come to the app list now long press on any app and select move data to sd. It will ask you to create a directory, accept! Now select menu button while still in titanium backup and select batch. Come down to option "move app data to sd". Run it to get more internal memory but I recommend to use class 6 sdcard if you are moving app data.

Fantastic work!
But I suggest you to change the thread name, and including the following "[TUTORIAL]", because poeple will think that is the main thread to this rom.
Regards!
a nice guide to help people:good:, one thing to though is you need to say "backup your old rom with cmw 1st before installing any other" (just incase) and also to stop conflicts from other roms that have been installed you really need to format system, boot, in mounts/storage menu aswell as factory wipe..............
You sir just made my day.

I know, I installed the Consumer Preview in order to try it out, problem is I was doing multiple things at the same time and accidentally installed it over Vista.
I was too lazy to reinstall Vista back so I just decided to wait for the final version to be released as the preview works just fine for everything I do with my laptop... Well until now anyway, ha.

Lol..
(I would use jaggy's tutorial to ask but since it hasn't been active for ten days I thought I'd be better to ask here instead of bumping the other thread, if I'm wrong I apologize)
So yeah, I'm still at the rooting process and it seems I'm definitely out of luck on this one.
So first off, I apparently managed to unlock the bootloader (and it IS unlocked, when I'm in bootloader mode I do have the "*** unlocked ***" on top of the screen) and at the same time keeping my apps, settings, etc...This was the first flag that something was wrong.
Adding the Recovery seems to have worked out fine, however when I tried to install the Superuser.zip I got the apparently not-so-uncommon "(Status 0) Installation aborted" message. I did some research and tried the method of removing the extra "updater-script~" from the archive but it did not work. Tried the method of doing a nandroid backup and then installing Superuser but no luck either.
I'm getting seriously hopeless, any idea on what I might have done wrong and how to get Superuser working?
Which recovery did you install, I was having some problems flashing anything with non-yannou's (I know i wrote it stupid but, you've got the idea )
Anyway, give a try to flash some rom, not sure if it will work without superuser installed, but nothing worse can happen (I think)

I installed the Recovery given by jaggy's tutorial. But Recovery isn't the problem as far as I know, since I've the option to install .zip file when in Recovery mode. My only issue comes from the fact that the Superuser file won't install itself.

Check out http://whatisbloatware.com/ for a quick overview of what bloatware is and why it's used etc.
Personally, I hate it - kills battery life, keeps your phone "awake" while running in the background, gathers usage stats and "anonymous" data/analytics, uses your data connection a hell of a lot.....
I'll make a de-bloat script to remove particularly useless and intrusive apps now.....
**If anyone has anything they want to have removed (e.g. Google Play Books/Movies/Games/Newsstand, Facebook, Social Engine etc) please let me know.....

**If anyone has anything they want to have removed (e.g. Google Play Books/Movies/Games/Newsstand, Facebook, Social Engine etc) please let me know.....
ideally a majority of the htc stuff, stock, kid mode etc and how a bout having the ability for a seperate gapps package like these http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2397942 . i personally use minimal gapps so use the micro modular package.

Bizarre..... I downloaded it again about an hour ago, only issue was that I had to add .zip at the end of the filename and choose "all files" from the "type" dropdown....
If you can hang on a while, a deodexed version with Busybox and supersu, plus unsecured kernel will be up.... working on it now!
no boot for me

[Script][Tool][Windows][4.4]Convert Any Rom to Full F2FS

This is a Windows Batch Script/Tool to make any 4.4 based ROM to full F2FS compatibility !! This tool can convert any existing ROM from ext4 to Full F2FS Compatibility in a few clicks !! All tools necessary for conversion included in the batch file itself !!
Basic Info
What is F2FS?
F2FS (Flash-Friendly File System) is a flash file system created by Kim Jaegeuk at Samsung for the Linux operating system kernel. The motive for F2FS was to build a file system that from the start takes into account the characteristics of NAND flash memory-based storage devices (such as solid-state disks, eMMC, and SD cards), which are widely used in computer systems ranging from mobile devices to servers.
What is All-F2FS?
We used F2FS only for /data. It was simply because we have only to flash a compatible Kernel and Format /data partition. With All-F2FS we use F2FS for all partitions and we need a compatible ROM

Lol where were you weeks ago when we needed you most? Thanks for this work, but I wish I had something to flash just to try it. Right now SlimKat is working wonderfully as is.

Its just 3 weeks ago things started to build up for f2fs for mako !! I created this script primararily for my Mako dont own a grouper !! Took me two weeks to polish the script !! Basically wanted to make kernels compatible too but after trying hard had to give it up !!
Do I get this right: I can use this script to convert the latest CM 11 nightly to F2FS compatibility? And what if the kernel changes in the nightly? Has the included kernel the fixes for the recently changed ram disk?

I was just poking fun at ya, nothing rude was intended. I am very happy to see something like this take place. Now we have something to do the next time our favorite ROM gets released.
We just need about 100 more devices to get supported and this may take off with the manufacturers themselves. Then I will consider all smart devices up to that point one large 10 year long beta test. Lmao

No idea I don't own a grouper so I don't test it at all !! @USBhost gave this boot.img to me and I included it in my script !! I think he could explain this better
Hey, I've been trying to troubleshoot for about 30 minutes but I simply cannot get the script to repack the ROM.
Here are the issues I'm running into:
1) When I am instructed to place the original ROM zip in EXTRACT/INPUT there is no INPUT subfolder.
That was easy enough though. I simply made one, placed the zip in, and everything seemed to move forward fine.
However:
2) During repacking, the script runs into a few errors. Rather than describing them here, I will post pictures of them below.

The end result:
I can't find a repacked ROM in any of the folders or subfolders.
Any ideas about where I went wrong?
Note this does not convert the kernel to f2fs you have to flash a custom All-F2FS kernel
Oh, I thought it did that? Can we please have that included into this script? Just put your favorite f2fs kernel into a folder and let it include it into your new f2fs rom? That would be nice...

If I get some time, I may try to put together a bat file to do this. Should be able to just extract both zips, merge the kernel library modules into the system folders in the ROM zip, and replacing the boot image. The whole system folder gets extracted recursively so the kernel files go with it, and zip it back up. This program fixes the updater-script.

Its not that you went wrong it's my script which is calling the wrong directories !! I had faced the same problem with my mako script in its early days but after changing a few things here and there it was gone !! Bdw I'll hook you up to a test script hopefully by today evening and I think you should be good to go
Edit : Others report it as working !! Might be you doing something wrong on your end ! Bdw you should extract all my folders in d F2FSROMCONVERTOR folder !! Name change or anything will effect the script to through errors
And ya the v3 test version is d same as the released version as far as I remember

That's exactly what I tried
---------- Post added at 01:42 AM ---------- Previous post was at 01:32 AM ----------
I wonder if you just replaced the boot.IMG from the ROM with the kernel's boot.img
Would that boot

F2FSROMConvetorV3
this one works for me
I tried using this tool to build a omni verison and a cyanogenmod version, both the latest nightly. On each build I get the message " Type Password to Decrypt ..."
Also the recovery provided does not boot up after flashing it using fastboot. The recovery from http://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-4/orig-development/recovery-rom-kernel-f2fs-05-04-14-t2706825 is working

You flashed a MAKO recovery onto your Grouper? I did not know that would work
EDIT: Never mind me, I see that you have a mako and trying to convert your Omni to it.
