I'm running CM 6.1 so I don't have Sprint VMM and I setup Google Voice using my cell number and went through all the steps to activate Google Voice, I then created a greeting but whenever I call my number and let it go to the voicemail all I get is "Could not complete your call, please try again." The phone I am calling my cell with is not broken or anything like that so I know it's something to do with Google Voice. What am I missing?

What maybe the issue and what was in my case, go to settings call settings and then voice mail number, mine was like *38 but after I put in my number everything fine.

You also need to go to the voice homepage on your pc and activate it there for your phone.

On google.com/voice my phone number is listed under "Mobile" and it says it is activated. My number is also correct in the google voice application on my phone but when I call my phone and let it continually ring, it still acts like I have never setup a voicemail and just says "Could not complete your call, please try again."

Yes it says my voicemail provider is google voice but I think I found the problem. Under Call Settings > Voicemail Settings it says Voicemail Number 9165381466 so I press it to change it and it says "To set up Google Voice as the voicemail provider on your phone you need to enter a special provisioning code." So I dial the code it tells me to dial and everytime I call the provisioning code it connects for 2 seconds then disconnects.
Sprint is my carrier.
And I just want Google Voice to receive the voicemails that people would normally leave on my phone. Basically I just want it to act like Sprint VVM. And I'm running CM6.1 if you're wondering why I just don't use Sprint VVM in the first place. If I can't get voice to work I guess I'll just flash VVM.

I set mine up to work like that. You only have to call the "provisioning code" once. It is just like forwarding, it sets it up to redirect calls to google voice if you don't answer. I have Sprint, also, and loved the VVM, but google voice works great.
I know how to fix this I wrote a post on this about a year ago. Sprint voicemail is terrible. This same thing happened to me and i didnt realize people couldnt leave me voicemails for about 2 months lol. Forget the provisioning code it means nothing after you do this. Listen close because heres what you do....
1. Go to google.com/voice on your computer and at the top right it says settings.
2. Highlight settings then click the drop down arrow and select voice settings.
3. The 1st tab says phone/your google voice number, select that and change your google voicemail number.
4. Once you change it, you have to delete google voice from your phone then reinstall it to finish this. Go thru process as normal when setting it up.
5. Now the final step, go to settings on your phone, then CALL settings then make sure voicemail service is set to GOOGLE VOICE, and right under that theres a tab in CALL settings that says VOICEMAIL SETTINGS. Select that and you will see VOICEMAIL NUMBER, press that once and you will get a pop up box that says a bunch of junk just hit ok and open google voice once and it should be done.

From my desktop PC, I am able to login to Google Voice and use it to make and receive calls.
But when I try to setup Google Voice on the G Tab, it seems to get stuck on the "Set up voicemail" screen

I am having the same issue. Google Voice had been working before but I recently had to wipe user data and now when I go through the setup it gets stuck exactly as you described. Has anyone found a solution. btw I am running tnt lite 4.2.5

I could be completely wrong, but I had the same problem, my conclusion is that google voice is trying to identify your number through voicemail BUT...it can't because there's no sim card. I don't know I might be wrong. Hopefully someone else can come in and correct me or confirm the info. Good luck.

This time I moved beyond the "Set up voicemail" screen.
Finished the Google Voice setup completely.
When I try to use Google Voice using my Landline as the forwarded phone, it works.
But when using Google chat as the forwarded phone:

Trust me,
Google voice still works for text and calls. Once you sign in just hi the home button. You can then select a contact to text or call. It infuriated me to no end untilled I figured this out. Now I call my best friend in Hawaii for free.

I was messing with Google Voice just last night. I found a post that suggested getting to the voicemail page and then just backing all the way out of GV again. I did that then went to test by sending my very first SMS from my gtab (i think I went to the 'phone' app then found the contact I wanted then long pressed or something then saw a little message button, clicked it and it took me to a place to type a text... and based on the tiny icon on the top I believe I was actually in Google Voice). Oh and the sms went through. As far as calling goes I didn't test it but I'm pretty confident that if I just go to the phone app and dial a number it will work. If I had my gtab with me I'd put my money where my mouth it right now.
I'll check on this thread when I get home later and let you know if I have better details or new info.

I had the same problem but resolved it by downloading the latest Google Voice from the market. Went through the setup again and when it failed the first time I found the "Skip" button had been moved and worked flawlessly.

That's the build I have and is the current build in the market (as far as I can see...).
It is not just the Google Voice app on the G Tab.
When I open the web browser.
I log in to the Google Voice web page
https://www.google.com/voice
I click the Call button.
In the Number to call field, I enter a friend's landline number.
In the Phone to call with, I select Google Talk.
When I hit connect, it says "calling you ..."
But there is no ringing on the G Tab?
So what exactly is it calling?
I powered off the G Tab.
Use the same Google id on my desktop to access the Google Voice web page.
Made the same outbound call, it works.

Last I heard, Google Talk for Android did not yet support voice/video calls. You should still be able to have it set up a call to your landline or cell.

I had the similar problem. I finished the install the file you provided. Voice mail set up was done. But, when I go back to the home screen, click on the phone button on the right side of the screen (one of the three button) and dialed a number. It says call setup failed. I am not sure why that happened. Does anyone know? I just want to be able to make calls, no need to receive calls. Thanks

Google Talk for Android (the app on the G Tablet) is not the same as the Windows app or the browser plugin for desktop machines. It doesn't support voice or video calls so when you select it to be used from Google Voice it won't work. To make and/or receive calls from GV on your tablet you must use a VOIP product and set it up in GV as you would any other phone. There are threads on this forum that discuss how to do that.
You can still initiate calls from your mobile or landline by setting them up in GV then selecting the appropriate one in the "phone to call with" menu from the web page.
Interestingly... you can also log into Google Talk (or gmail with the GT plugin) from your desktop and use your G Tablet to initiate a call using that instance of Google Talk.
Hey everyone, I've had an OG Droid since Jan 1. 2010, and just upgraded to the Thunderbolt, I love it! Anyways, my name's Wes, and I need to build up a few posts before I can write in the development threads. So here's my tidbit of advice, if you happen to be on a family plan or have limited available minutes, you can combine GV+Sipdroid+GVDialer to make free calls over wifi AND 3g/4g. This is covered on the internet all over the place, but I had to research a ton before getting it to work on my droid because I found that many guides out there were from back in the day when google hadn't made things so easy to set up. Now that a lot of us have 4g, call quality and connection will be very consistent. How it works (confusing i know!): free VoIP #'s are available but only allow free incoming calls, so google makes them all in coming. GV dialer uses the internet instead of minutes to tell google voice to dial your desired call out #, then google voice sends the call to you as an incoming call. Google then lets you reroute that incoming call to your random DID # from ipcomms.net, and BOOM, a free "outgoing" incoming call. So in a quick nutshell, here's what you do.
Get a google voice #, download google voice app to your phone
Download GV Dialer from the market (paid app, maybe 2 bucks or something i forget)
Download Sipdroid from the market (not sipdroid + Showmee)
Then visit ipcomms.net and get the "free DID" by registering. Once you get the email with your free did, open the document with your info and jot down your username and password. (i think they're both 10 digits, you can't change this password either)
Open sipdroid, and hit Menu>Settings,SIPAccount#1, then for username and password enter what you found in the step above. For "Server or Proxy" enter "sipconnect.ipcomms.net"
Scroll down and you can adjust whether you want it to connect over 3g(4g works also) and/or WIFI, Edge
if it's working, you'll see a green light in your notifications bar, meaning your DID # is ready to receive free calls, but no one knows that #, so...
IMPORTANT: navigate to google.com/voice on your computer, login with your credentials, then go to to settings (top right corner) > Phones tab, then click "add another phone" Enter you're 10 digit ipcomms #, then click call to verify(make sure green light is on). You will get a call on the sipdroid app, slide to answer, then enter the code google gave you in your web browser on your computer to activate (if no keypad is showing, hit menu button and you can get to it during the call)
Once this is done and your phone is added, make sure calls to your voice account are set to forward calls to you ipcomms number.
Finally, open Gv dialer, login, go to its settings, and click "default phone to ring," after a moment you'll be given the option to select your ipcomms #, click that. YOU'RE DONE!
To make a call with VoIP, open gizmo(make sure you've got green light), then on your phone open GV dialer, dial the number you want, click "connect with google voice", wait for the internet to tell google to call the number and call your ipcomms # back, and voila, you get an incoming call, answer it, and you'll hear the call connecting and starting to ring.
I wrote this in about 10 minutes so if you have any questions of if anything sounds wrong or I made typos lemme know, now i'm going back to this VCU Kansas game for a bit. Hopefully someone out there finds this useful.

Under Sipdroid's description in market: "Being open source, Sipdroid has often been cloned appearing under names such as Guava, aDIP, Fritz!App,..."
You can actually do it without Sipdroid on phones with Gingerbread (its built into the settings you just enter your ipcomms info) but we don't have it yet, and the gingerbread version has very few adjustable settings.
there are also alternatives to GV dialer as well as sites that offer free DID numbers for inbound calls, but this setup has worked fine for me.

Any other sip providers working? Using Ekiga and ipkall for Gv calling,doesn't work so well on CSipSimple...... Would like to transition to another service easily as possible,and ipcomms is a bit confusing.

+1 but this only works if you have F&F and have a number to burn to put in there. Don't use it much but when calling my bud in canada or maybe a conference call i use it and it works just swell....on an incredible though, I"m still a wannabe

Sipdroid thing was annoying when I tried it. I really prefer gv callback. I have it set up to ask me every time. Its pretty sweet.
so how exactly do you do this without sipdroid? I've got gv callback and its like the same as gv dialer asks which number i want to forward to, you're saying you can forward to google voice somehow? gv callback has option to start sipdroid before callback, so i would assume i still need something to handle the call received? Do I use google talk as callback number?
Do you have a google voice number? If not, go get one. It's free. Use you're regular gmail account to set it up. Then download goog voice also. There will be an option to use GV as the call back number. (also under the online GV settings you have to link you're mobile to the GV #). last, then you just set it to ask you every time to call you back, then when you go to call someone it will give you the option to use GV or not. If still need help I'll pm you my phone.
i have a google voice number, and the google voice app already. what do you mean forward to your GV number? Under google voice app there are no forwarding settings.
you mean you forward to your mobile number on google voice online settings, as in your verizon number? And it doesn't charge you any minutes? I'm pretty sure it still counts as using your minutes, you checked exactly when you called and compared it to the dates and times on your bill?
Gv callback requires friends and family to be of any benefit. Sipdroid allows you to make calls over your data connection, uses no minutes. It lags heavily though, not recommended if you have friends and family at your disposal.

I'm sorry, I've been mistaken. Somehow the actual GV app gives me the option to make voice calls. That is what i have been using. GV I downloaded but never set up. Not sure how I ended up with such a confusion. It used to just give the option to make international calls, but now you can set it up to ask everytime. I'm not yet rooted or I would take some screen shots.

Sipdroid is better when you're on lte. If you are on conference calls a lot, sipdroid does help saving those minutes

Do you get free texting using only GV? I know $10/month is not a whole lot but for those that have only voice (no text plan), it will come in handy.
This video will show you how to make calls using your WIFI through your home network or public hotspot, it will also show you how to make a call through your 3g (data connection) and bypass your Mobile carriers voice network. This is a perfect solution for people who have no or little coverage in their homes or apartment!

Step 1. Go to Android Market and download Google Voice.
Step 2. Go to the web and log on to your Google Voice count and make sure you enable googlechat.
Step 3. Go to Android Market and download SipDroid. Clink the button that links your Pbxes to your Google Voice.
Step 4. Once you do step 3 , SipDroid would have created a Pbxes account and linked it to your Google Voice account. Now you will need to extract your some info (SIP credentials) You will need your Username,Password, and Server. Remember this info.
Step 5. Un-install SipDroid
Step 6. Now we need to log on into our Pbxes account. Go to www.pbxes.org . You will now need to enter in your Username and Password which you obtained from SipDroid before you un-installed it.
Step 7. Go to the left column and click on, "Personal". Input your all your information, make sure you do this or Pbxes will delete your account. Now go to the left column again and click on, "Extensions" and chose "Sipdroid200". All you really have to do on this page is just re-enter your password. Make sure you enter your GoogleVoice password this is very important so make sure you do this correctly.
Step 8. Now go to your Android Phone running CyanogenMod or ASOP version 2.3.5. If not update your phone to the latest OS.
Step 9. Go to settings on your phone, then go to phone settings and scroll all the way down until you see the native SIP calling. It will say, "Accounts" and "Internet Calling". Go to Accounts. Now add an account and enter in Username, Password, Server. Server will be pbxes.org. Go to options and make sure transport type is set to TCP, not udp.
Back out of this screen until you get to the screen that says "Receiving Calls". Your Phone will try to connect and should successfully do it unless you did something wrong.
You are ready to make a call. I have mine set up to where when I make a call it asks if I want to make a "Internet call" or "Cell Call".

Alternatively you can use an app called GrooveIP from market and just use your google voice number. No need for a third party SIP/VOIP account.

theres also an app called groove ip in the market that does all that without any extra signing up just give it your login/password and your set
Doesn't GrooveIP do this, but in a much easier way for $4? I understand if some people want to save the $4 though. Nice tutorial!
No need for all of that when you can use groove ip to sync to your google voice account and make few calls from there on 3g or wifi

Just watched it, very well made video for this set up procedure! If possible could you provide a second video or post regarding usage? I've tried Groove IP and I thought the call quality is terrible. This method just uses your Native Sip Stack that's built into your phone, so their is no bloat from adding an app and also you still use your native dialer, it just adds an option for internet calls.
Alternative no-video guide
1/ Register an account at iptel.org
2/ Check your mail and put the info into the phone, following Step 9 above. (Suggest to use UDP, not TCP.)
3/ Go to IPKall.com and get a free US number there using the iptel.org credentials you just put into your phone. Check your mail again.
Note: Your number will be cancelled unless you get at least one incoming call every month.
4/ Install Google Voice, go to https://www.google.com/voice and set up your service, forward the calls to the phone number assigned by IPKall.com. (Make sure to disable all the nonsense like calls monitoring etc.)
Note: For people outside of US: You need to connect via a US proxy or VPN, otherwise, tough cookies.
5/ Done. You can now be reached @ your Google Voice number, IPKall.com number or via sip://[email protected]
Note: Of course, only the last way is free.
Graci, When you dial out, you use your native dialer it will give you an option to make a internet call or cell call. When people call in the same applies. Hope that helps you.

I can install it, but doesnt allow to sign up..it cant verify the phone number..also from the web version google voice not fully enabled..only usa still

I just use GrooveIP, even an idiot like me can install it and it sets itself up entirely.
But not sure what this has to do with the NC considering it doesn't have a microphone?
In phone settings, under voicemail provider, the only option I have is Voice Mail, there's no Google Voice option like they're used to be. I uninstalled and reinstalled Google Voice, went through setup, still no option under voicemail provider. All voicemails open with the standard phone app and it dials into voicemail...

The stock Samsung dialer will never show Google Voice voicemails. You still have to either use the Google Voice app for that, or the Google Dialer. Set it up with conditional call forwarding with your carrier and you'll be set.

It has shown in the stock dialer in the past. I think maybe the new Google Voice update broke something? Because after going through proper setup after reinstalling Voice, I can't get it to work at all. Stock phone app notifies me of voicemails, clicking that takes me to my dialer where I have to call in to check voicemails, and that sucks... How do you set up conditional call forwarding, within the Voice app? I've never had to do that before, and I've been using Voice since the beginning.
Again, to be clear, I'm not looking for Google voicemails in the stock dialer, like in hangouts. Open phone app, more, settings, scroll down to Voicemail - Service Provider. Normally, Google Voice is listed there as an option (instead of using your stock voicemail, you can select to use Google Voice for voicemail). This is what's missing. So every time I get a voicemail, it goes to the one where you have to DIAL into your voicemail! No voicemails go to Google Voice.
OK, I will repeat, because I must not have explained it properly:
You must set up conditional call forwarding. This is step #1, and it absolutely must be done.
Your carrier: T-Mobile Change carrier
Note: This feature does not work with T-Mobile prepaid phone plans.
Follow these steps to have your mobile phone use Google Voice for voicemail instead of your carrier's voicemail. You can always go back to using your carrier's voicemail later if you want, by entering another code. Learn more here.
Enter the following exactly as written, as if you are dialing someone:
**004*1(your area code & number here)#
Press "Send" or "Call" on your phone to dial that number. When you see the confirmation message on your phone, you are done!

So if your number was (123) 456-7890, you would dial **004*11234567890#
Step 2 - Go into your dialer settings and look for your call forwarding settings. You should see options there.
For always forward, select off. For the other three, put in your Google voice number.
There. Done. Should work perfectly now. You can view your voicemails in the Google voice app.

I appreciate the help, I'll do this later today when I have a chance. I will say, though, that these steps are ABSOLUTELY not necessary for my T-Mobile Galaxy S7 Edge. For some reason, my fiance's regular S7 won't use Google Voice. So again, I'll try these steps later for her, thanks!

I am having the same problem. I followed the instructions of dialing **004*1 (area code plus number) into my new T-Mobile Galaxy S7 phone and got: "the number you have dialed is not in service.
Have I followed the instructions incorrectly?

Don't forget the pound sign after your phone number. This method did work for my fiance's S7. I never had to go through all this with my S7 Edge, though.
I have the same problem. I tried the code above and get this error:
Call forwarding
Connection Problem or invalid MMI code.
I had the same issue. Noticed recently I wasn't getting my Google Voice voicemails when my phone started telling me to install Verizon's visual voicemail to view my voicemails. Setting Google Voice also wasn't an option all of a sudden in the phone app, as it had been for years. I also noticed when I opened the new Voice app on my phone, it promoted me to pick a new Voice number, so the recent updates must have broken something.
Anyways, this is how I fixed it.
1) On a PC, go to voice.google.com (log in, if you aren't already)
2) Hit the menu button, scroll down, and select 'Legacy Google Voice' (should open in a new window)
3) In the new window, you should see your Voice number and then your cell number below that
4) You should see a link that says 'Activate Google voicemail on this phone'. Click that.
5) A box will open telling you to dial and call *71(Your Google Voice number)
6) You should be good to go, I placed a test call and it worked like it always had before except for an a couple extra rings before voicemail kicked in.
I also did the following to get it to go straight to voicemail after the normal number of rings...
Under your cell number, hit 'Edit' > 'Show Advanced Settings' > 'Forwarding Options' > Select 'Go straight to voicemail' > 'Save'
YMMV but I hope this helps someone. It certainly had me stumped for a couple days lol.
Call forwarding
I have a new SM j32 7T1 and it won't let me set call forwarding to anything but the pre-programmed MetroPCS voicemail everytime I put in my other phone number which I have two phones it says there's a network error which I don't think is an error I think it's the software will not allow me to put in a different number
Yeah, I got that "Connection Problem or invalid MMI code" code too after typing in the **004... code. However, I was able to successfully set up forwarding to my Google Voice by following the second step of instructions given. (Note: I recently bought this Galaxy S7 unlocked, previously T-Mobile carrier and need to set Google Voice as my voicemail - it was all set up on my previous phone, so I've done everything in Google Voice to set it up, and I had to of course install Google Voice on my new phone). Anyway, here's the instructions for setting up Google Voice as my voicemail on Galaxy S7:
(1) Tap phone icon to open phone app
(2) Tap 3-dot menu upper right corner
(3) Select: Settings
(4) Under CALL SETTINGS section select: More Settings
(5) Select: Call forwarding
(6) As the other person's instructions stated: leave the "Always forward" setting turned off, but tap the other 3 settings ("Forward when busy", etc.) and enter your Google number. Voila, all calls that you don't answer, for whatever reason, will go to your Google Voice where the caller will record a message, and you'll receive it via your Google Voice app.
