APP Request - Black Box Drive Data Recorder - General Questions and Answers

Anyone know of, or have an opinion about a black box drive data recorder?
A video recording of the view out of your windscreen (phone in a holder), with GPS co-ordinates and speed and heading overlaid, and perhaps G readings from the accellerometer. Could be limited to say 5 or 10 minutes in length to limit file size, with the older section being overwritten by the new so you always have the last 10 minutes of your trip.
Get into a crash, you can provide your insurance company or the court, with undeniable evidence of what happened, (or if you're at fault delete the file...)
Thoughts?

Id like it aswell. Any idea?

I just installed the app..I'll give it a whirl tomorrow outside. I did a test recording indoors and I noticed something weird.. the video doesn't show what I'm looking at, it shows everything rotated 90 degrees. But the video that gets uploaded to the site looks fine.
edit: Have you checked Qik? They're kinda your competition..they don't emphasis location as much, but it's an option there too.
looks interesting but what would you need it for?

Thanks for the feedback.
Could post details of which Android phone you tested on please and also if you have cooked or the OEM ROM?
On the Tattoo when you rotate the phone the video view rotates too, however, I did code both the broadcast and record screens to stay in portrait mode, which could be the cause of the problem you reported.

I'll try to give you a couple of examples:
The broadcast option is intended to be used for live tracking, for example, a phone mounted in a car and broadcasting can be tracked and viewed live on the web by other people.
Here's a link to how the US Navy used the app for asset tracking.
http://www.microsoft.com/casestudies/Case_Study_Detail.aspx?casestudyid=4000005831
The record option is generally used by people for social media - here's a good example from the website
http://www.ix-m.com/gps?movieID=20713_08122009114312
Hope that helps?
Its exactly the same on my Liquid, with 1.6

I've uploaded v1.1 which might fix this - please give it a try when you have time.
The new version is not fixed in portrait mode, so I am hoping you will get the default camera rotation - fingers crossed.
Caveat: on the Tattoo when you rotate the phone during a recording or broadcast it terminates it, so best to say either in portrait or landscape until I can resolve both issues
The GPS doesn't work on my Liquid.
I get fix and everything is ok when I go into "GPS - Enabled".
But when I start to record either in "Broadcast" or in "Record" mode, it loose fix after about 15 seconds.
And when I check the recordings it seems that the GPS data freezes at the start of the recordings, since the speed doesn't seem to change.
V1.1 seem to have fixed my GPS bug.
But the 90 degree rotation of what I see on my display is still there. As long as I keep the phone in portrait position the recording comes out correct on the web page. Will go out for another test drive now to be sure it keeps the GPS fix, and check if it updates the GPS data while I drive.
And the background is white on my Liquid now in v1.1, then its impossible for me to see which file I have marked in the Geocast folder.
Edit: nope, still the same GPS problems, can not keep fix.

Thanks for feedback above and also for your post #13.
FYI I've coded the app to drop the GPS connection after start-up to save on battery usage, so when you select broadcast or record it will re-initialize the GPS receiver, which depending on weather conditions etc, could take a while to get a fix.
In the Windows Mobile version we have an option "GPS always on", which might help (if I added that), but that doesn't help if the GPS receiver cannot fix on enough satellites (less than about 5 and you can get some random locations)
[edit] explaination about the number of satellites required for an acurate GPS location - if there are less than 3, then your location data might not change or be quite random - 4 to 7 satellites and you get resaonable accuracy ~10 satellites and then it's pretty acurate on the map.
I don't think this is the case. Every other program I use gives exact location and speed, at the same locations as your program looses fix.
Your program also takes very long time, and sometime can't regain fix at all until I turn it of and restart it. So it must be a bug.
The Liquid also have very good GPS receiver(much better than the one on the Hero), and also have A-GPS so it get fix very fast.
If the problem is that you have set the limit for how many satellites it need to approve it as good enough for your program, then at least it shouldn't affect the other GPS programs I have running at the same time.
After your program messes up my GPS, the other programs take a very long time to regain fix after I have shut down your program.
So as I said it must be a bug, and if its not then its useless since you can only use it as a video recorder, not a logger since the location you get on the map jumps all over the place, and the speed recordings show everything from N/A to 1000 kmh.

Yes, sorry it probably is a bug in the beta, but it does works fine on the Tattoo and as that is the only Android phone I have to test with I posted the link here to try and get some feedback to improve the app for other phones.
FYI there is no code in the app explicitly setting a limit on the number of satellites - my previous comment was generic about GPS, the higher the number of satellites the receiver aquires the more acturate the positioning is.
For example on the Windows Mobile version of the app it shows you on the website how many satellites the receiver has aquired throughout the tracking -- I'll need to delve into the Android APIs to see if that is possible to add to the app and that might help with debugging problems like this.
Many thanks for the feedback.
Ok, and if more guys can test it out on other devices maybe that can help too. I am subscribing to this thread and will test out a new version as soon as you have one out.
My girlfriend is using the Hero now and I don't have access to it until friday, but I will ask if she can download and test it on that.

Thanks - I think the next thing for me to concentrate on is the GPS issue, because you say the app is useless if that doesn't work correctly on all Android devices
I'll upload a new build tomorrow with some additional GPS info displayed so we can see what happens on your phone - from looking at the API I will be able to display the accuracy (in meters) that the receiver is returning - but I can't see anything in the location API that gives the satellite count.

There's an app called GPS Status that shows you how many satellites you are connected to (it shows position in a radar view and also the count). I don't know if the source code for it is available, but maybe looking at that app will be helpful to you.
GPSTest and Tricorder also show number of satellites.

Safe driving app (request)

Hi.
So, i just watched a show called SourceFed on youtube where they talked about a guy getting arrested for "driving homicide",
basically he texted while driving, he ended up in the wrong lane and fronted another car killing the other driver.
Which brings me to my request:
Could you guys help me by developing a free application which disables the text (sms) function in a phone once the phone reaches a speed of 25km/h (15mph)?
That's "all" the app has to do, just disable the SMS function while driving.
One downside that i would like you to ponder about, is the fact that this would disable the text function for the passenger as well, how can this be worked around without the driver being able to do so as well?
Perhaps a WiFi module somewhere in the car which gives more accurate GPS positioning data which then leads to you being able to tell if the phone is in the driver seat or not?
I'm not doing this for commercial purposes or for profit, i just had a good intention which i would like to see available to everyone and perhaps even standard in the next generation of phones so we don't loose lives due to technical gadgets..

Hate to be the bearer of bad news but gps is not accurate enough to tell if you are in the passenger seat of a car.
The speed limit thing can be done though, and I think has, but it would be easier for drivers to simply use self control.
However you can try apps like call guard, that apparently blocks texts and calls while you are driving.

or the most dummy-proof way: don't text and drive!
unless you are using your device as an GPS, shouldnt be using a phone while driving anyway.
got a text? read it during red light/traffic jam
need to talk on phone? invest in headset
etc

I know that you shouldn't, and i don't unless i'm parked.
This is my issue: google: teen-sentenced-to-prison-for-texting-while-driving-death (a few days old)
Over here perhaps 10-15% of drivers admit that they do text while drying more then once a week,
and most of them claim that they don't notice any difference while driving, meaning that they think they operate just as good as they normally do.
The rest knows it's bad but do it anyway.
Thx mistermentality, will check out Call Guard

I Need the g600 interceptor Firmware can you send a Link ??
Free Samsung G600 stealth firmware, 7 functions
You can download the updated firmware from here.
Another working link, just here.
Please make sure that you have read about this firmware.
And so - This is a copy of our phone with the sample program of 2007-2008. Then we just started and so many mistakes and mistakes were made. Later all legal copies to our customers we updated. In this program, even in the function of changing IMEI, there is an error about which we did not know then. Your native name will be at the operator at each change SIM cards. In a consequence this glitch was eliminated. The new version of this buggy differs externally in the EXTRA settings menu. The new version of this menu is not available in the phone menu. And to get to Extra you can only by a combination of numbers * # XXXXXXXX # and then enter the password. The last update on the Samsung G600 was made in the fall of 2014. More this model is not supported, and replaced by a new model Samsung C6112, which is 10 times better than this and which will be maintained for another 2-3 years. Having bought a phone from rogues with a program, you not only lose money but also put yourself at risk, because the phone does not perform as expected the claimed functions.?
this is a pirate copy, but what is the difference from the original, I explain my clients well and there were no bad reviews). - I am sure that this is not so, since I turn off a hundred telephones around the world a month, remotely.
Since you do not know what our old version contains, I'll write to you - all the same I was asked to do this by normal salesmen:
because they sold a lot in England on the XCell site, then first about holes in this version
What the crooks did from the site Home | XCell Stealth Phones:
1. Judging by their site they made their own box.
2. Wiped the inscription Samsung on the glass and tracerytom painted their own.
3. Instead of the inscription EXTRA they wrote XCELL, it's done in 5 minutes, we did not attach importance to that it's easy to change the name, but as I see in vain.
4. Drew a picture in .gif format, these are moving pictures. And their picture does not make any difference to the functional, just a picture.
5. They pasted stickers on the chips with the statement that these chips were soldered and put their own, which is a blatant lie.
On Siemens, the same hole in IMEI, besides the first half of the figures there does not change at all, we offered the buyer (bought the firmware) for some money to bring to mind, but they did not agree, they vparivayut so.
This is the end of their innovations!
Our policy on the contrary is that the phone does not differ from the usual phone. Therefore, we did not do such stupid things like the type of pictures and inscriptions.
They constantly write that they have updated versions of what is a lie, since nothing can change in the program and even more so they can not improve or improve. Sellers are just swindlers who knowingly cheat customers.
Holes and glitches in the copy version:
0. The phone did not see and did not react in any way to complexes that did not send a command to reduce encryption, these complexes simply do not support encryption themselves. And there are a lot of such complexes now, roughly speaking on two Motorola handsets, or freely sold receiver cards and transfer.
1. Change function IMEI has a hole that does not change the SIM card change in the phone. Those. having received once the native IMEI phone further SIM card change does not make sense, if the person who controls has access to the communication operator. This is due to the fact that IMEI in the phone is changing dynamically, and the operator when changing SIM cards has the opportunity to receive and actually gets the factory IMEI stitched in the phone. About this hole, we learned about two years after the version of our phone was copied. In all new versions, we made a patch separately to close this hole.
The versions that pradaetsya in the Internet all contain this flaw. This drawback has remained in all Siemens phone models with the IMEI change that we did.
2. The function of ping calls after 2007 (namely, this version is sold on the Internet) has been refined many times, because there were many false positives. The method of detecting ping calls was radically redone.
3. We changed the function of the operator profiles by dropping the profiles in principle and done differently, because users often forgot to create a profile for the new operator.
4. The functionality of working with remote base stations has been repeatedly refined, since when the signal was lost, the device reset this mode and went to the strongest channel, while the user did not see it because the phone menu still remained as it had nothing happened. It is for this reason that we did not see this glitch for a long time and then it was difficult to find the cause of its occurrence.
5. The crypto reduction icon did not work, and the device did not see if there was a decrease during the passive operation of the phone. This was fixed by a separate item in our menu - Scan detector
6. When working with new base stations, the device was restarted at any time, either in conversation or in standby mode. Gluck appeared about 4 years ago.
7. Recording conversations did not always work. I myself had a couple of cases when the phone did not record important conversations, it would have been better if he had not written everything before and he wrote it down. And there was a recording limit of 30 minutes.
There were many smaller and less visible corrections .............
Differences from the final version of the Samsung G600 made in the fall of 2014:
1. Fixed a hole with the sending of a native IMEI connection operator.
2. The most correct (it stands in the recommended by the manufacturer when resetting) the mode of changing IMEI - only if the SIM card is changed.
3. Extremely important functions related to the detection of active, semi-active complexes and catchers have been finalized, one does not even want to enumerate what has been done, but the phone 2007 (copies) and 2014 is heaven and earth.
The phone contains the following functions:
IMEI - change IMEI, protection from monitoring of conversations through the operator
A5 profiles - protection from active complexes
Call ping - detect silent calls
SMS ping - the detection of all types of hidden SMS, as well as sms that can harm the phone.
Scan detector - detection of crypt degradation in the passive state of the phone
Channels lock - protection from passive and active complexes with the A5.1 handler
Alerts - selection of alarm for events
Show TIMSI - TIMSI displays on the phone screen
Clear call log - delete information about calls from the phone's memory
One channel - detecting the presence of one channel in the network
Bluetooth - low
Recording - automatic recording of calls
Reset settings - reset to recommended
Information - output of the software version
In occasion of Motorola: In them except for a glitch with Ie there is not a correctness in that the first 8 digits remain unchanged, this is a serious binding. I did not expect the Englishman to finish the Siemens for a fee, but he refused.
*the price for the G600 is 40,000 rubles, the last update is the fall of 2014. But the new model based on Samsung C6112 - 150 000 rubles. But this phone did not stand next to the G600 and it's a cool professional product.

2015 Honda CR-V EX-L and bluetooth

I have posted a similar post in the CRV Owners forum, but I thought this forum would make more sense since it's filled with a bunch of hardware-hacking programmers!
The interface between my car and my phone (LG G2 Lollipop stock) is abysmal. I have seen a number of posts on the web about this issue with modern cars, but no real solutions. The following is a list of what I would like the interface to be between the phone and car. Then at the end of the email I'll flame a little about the "why"s.
GIve me a button to allow me to talk to my phone directly without the HondaLink getting in the way. There was a similar issue with a Volkswagon and a solution using Tasker to intercept the call. That solution doesn't work with my Honda and is a kludge.
Always have the phone interrupt the radio (whether it's a call or audio, e.g. Google maps navigation). For me, the information coming from the phone will always be more important than the music or talk show on the radio.
Mirror the phone screen onto the car screen when I'm driving (so I can see my map when I need to)
When I receive a call, let the phone do the talking (the phone can speak the caller's name to me and can send the caller's name over the bluetooth connection) and let me hit a button to answer it.
Has anyone successfully hacked into the firmware/software in the CV-R to fix these issues? Is it possible? At this point, based on my research, I see no other option. If there is another option that doesn't involve replacing the system or "just dealing with it," I'd love to hear it.
The "why"s:
My phone is custimizable, has all of my contacts, recognizes my voice, has GPS, accurate and up-to-date maps, and does everything that I need a phone and navigation system to do. The Honda solution tries to duplicate all of that functionality and does it very poorly. As one user wrote last year, my $50 bluetooth headset can listen to my phone and pipe in navigation directions and let me know when I get a call. It is a joke that an expensive car can't even get that part right. The fact that I can't put my phone screen on the car screen while I'm driving is idiotic. Now I've got to find some way to hold my phone up for navigation. I don't want this post to degenerate into a series of posts and counter-posts on whether drivers can handle the increased cognitive demand. I've been driving long enough to see that the majority of drivers are not paying any attention at all to the road anyway and no one seems to care.
The hardware in the CR-V seems to be capable of doing the things that I have listed above. So, if the Honda programmers can't get it the way I want it, the only solution is to take the programming away from them and do it ourselves. Has anyone done this yet?
Thank you in advance for your help.

Very Old + Blind relative - need remote control software to have calls with them.

Hi,
I have a relative well over 90, almost fully blind so can not see icons on screens but could about locate the phone. Currently spending a fortune on traditional calls and would like to be able to communicate via mobile. WiFi / internet access can be installed at very low cost. I am able to visit very, very infrequently so the software needs to be persistent and survive ROM updates etc.
Ideal Requirements:
1. When I am (and perhaps a few other preset users) calling on Viber or Whatsup any touch whatsoever answers. May be even auto answer.
2. Any other calls via whatever channels create no disturbance.
3. I am able to log in remotely to update device etc with no assistance whatsoever from the user. This functionality survives software updates bu the manufacturer.
4. If the user touches the phone it initiates viber/whatsup call to me and records what is happening and send it to me if I can not answer.
5. It has to be secure so remote access should be via encryption keys only to us and not the app service provider (I.e. akin to end to end encryption on viber/whatsup)
6. The app understands that the end user might be touching the phone in many different way and hence not respond to that during the call and say or 30 seconds after the call.
Realizing that chances are that there are no apps to satisfy those requirements. as a minimum:
Remote access and control software for the android such that:
1. I can start a whats up or Viber call from my mobile, then easily and quickly remotely "pick up" the recipient phone so that they do not have to do anything. This way the call between us could be started.
2. I can remotely log in, perhaps from PC for installing updates etc.
3. Persistent with regard to over the air android updates requiring no cooperation from the remote end user once set up.
4. It has to be secure so remote access should be via encryption keys only to us and not the app service provider (I.e. akin to end to end encryption on viber/whatsup)
(I understand that Skype has some auto answer features but would prefer viber / whatsup due to end to end encryption and better quality)
Also advice on handset also appreciated (loud clear voice and ability to have remote control software and viber / whatsup is a priority - no point in paying for 40MP camera or Virtual Reality capable CPU)
Advance thanks for any advice!
Life sucks. And changes suck. And I can image that when being old they suck even more.
Have to just suggest that you don't make any changes into her/his life.
As long as s/he is happy comfortable enough the way things are now...

She is not happy with the way things are because:
1. Calls cost up to $100 per month.
2. She actually wants a mobile because everyone else has ... even though she would not be bale to use one.
I can see no reason why there should not be a software that would enable even people in her conditions to have some very limited use of a smart phone - for example as described above.
