Awesome Benchmark - Captivate General

I am officially impressed.

very nice. i really want this phone.

This is why I refuse to use qualcomm devices ever since my last qualcomm CPU+GPU. Even if it has the MHz it still sucks.
This should tell you samsung put a lot of effort to get the device's hardware working with 3D, because beyond the GPU there is RAM speed to worry about and I think they got it working. HTC doesn't really care much on 3d performance as much as samsung or motorola.

i don't know why u should really care about 3d on a phone. its nice to have but... nvm its friggin NICE.

If you're not going to game on it then its pointless, but I for one would like fluid 3d live wallpapers, google earth, and video games to work smoothly.

This is one of the reasons im selling my acer liquid..cause of its ****ty gpu performance...

Yeah one of the reasons I did not go with a Qualcomm Snapdragon is because the last Qualcomm phone I bought was the dreaded TyTN II. So "F" them.
Anyway the Captivate played back all the movie files I tried (DVD rips at different resolutions, mostly 1.4GB+) silky smooth. I didn't try any mkv files because my SD card is pretty full and none would fit.
Anyway I was playing Clerks II avi that is 1.4 GB and I let it run for about 15 mins and the phone barely was getting warm. If this phone had HDMI out it would be the best phone prolly ever made. It only has VGA out.
If Samsung can deliver on its promise for the 2.2 update this thing will smash all the benchmarks.
So who is gonna port WP7 on this thing when it is released? lol.

Why would you want WP7 on this beauty?!

Who knows maybe it'll be good. More options are always better.
The only thing I really want from WP7 is netflix streaming to the device.

[Q] What would you like to see most in next gen WP7 devices

Wp7 devices have been reasonable but obviously missing a few things, i feel i have had to settle for 2nd best. dont get me wrong, the OS is great but hardware wise i feel a little bit cheated, so ive already decided, my next WP7 phone will have something a little extra and completely fulfill my demands next time. what is the thing you want most in the next gen wp7/8 device??? any other suggestions welcome but im starting with 5.
How can YOU decide what your next WP7 will have before they've even been announced? For all we know, there will be no future hardware upgrades, as the OS is running flawlessly on the current technology. Sure, in theory it would be nice to have more memory, a better CPU, a better GPU , etc. But if WP7 doesn't like it, Manufacturers will never release it.
Should be more along the lines of what people would LIKE to see in future devices.
simple. if the next gen of wp7 dosnt have any of these features. i wont be buying a new one.
Honestly, I want parity with the highest end Android phone...JUST for the sake of specs. The OS is smooth enough, so it certainly doesn't REQUIRE so much horsepower...but Android-loving friends will always boast about the specs...
Anyways, hardware-wise, a dual-core Qualcomm SoC, with a high-quality 8 megapixel camera, FHD recording, a YELLOW flash (and I don't care about front-facing camera, but it would be nice to get a more than 1MP camera on the front as well), and physical buttons are a must. Right now I have the LG Optimus 7, so I would expect the same industrial design or better in a next-gen phone. And anything under 32GB storage is unacceptable. 1GB RAM would be nice too for when you want 10-20 tabs open ( I use metro browser ). I have tried 5 WP7 phones, each for about a week, and I can subjectively say the size of the screen on the Optimus 7 is near ideal. I want a 100mm (3.94 in) IPS screen on my next phone...
OK, I am done ranting. Oh wait, a price under $500 is also appreciated, since I tend to NOT get contracts.
And Microsoft, seriously, I live like 2 hours away from your campus in Washington, but in Canada. The world is NOT just USA. Bing features, as well as other localized features should be available in Canada at the same time as US. I can understand Zune Pass (CRTC...those bastards), but anything else is INEXCUSABLE!!!
I would expect WP8 to have all of the above as minimum system requirements.
I would want CDMA carriers (Verizon mainly) to have Window Phone 7 models before any new models come out. I want one but, I am getting sick of waiting just to get good coverage on a phone.
Maybe S-AMOLED Plus (that acronym needs an acronym).
4g, that is the one feature I definitely want on the next generation WP devices. I am in no rush for dual cores just because I know that Microsoft will probably provide good drivers enough to make it even more fluid. I really don't care about the other things (more storage would be nice though).

as much as i like your spec list for the future of windows phone... do you really see all of that coming in at under $500?

So basically if MS follows your train of thought all the earlier adapters to the game would be SOL

From reading this section of the forums I thought Android was something you throw on a cheap, why are you complaining about the cost?
Apple is going multi core, so Microsoft has no choice but to introduce multi core phones this year if they want to continue this.
Also looks like FFC is now the standard on the major players devices.
1080 recording should be on the list too.
Everything else I want is mainly software related.

I would gladly take a phone without a FFC. If I wanted to video chat someone, I would tell them to use a computer.
1080p is only on dual core and as long as the quality is good.
A better UI interface!
How about a port to connect to my Zune docking stations? Could probably replace the microUSB.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
MS should buy Nokia out, and start making their own phones(ZuneHD like)
high end phones all the way!
-Dual core processor: Cool but probably unnecessary considering how well optimized WP7 is on a single core 1Ghz.
-Better GPU: Would love to see more powerful GPUs in the future. Xbox Live Games need it to beat out iOS and the next PSP! If Epic can make a game as gorgeous as Infinity Blade for the iPhone and not WP7, Microsoft has fallen behind. (I voted for this one)
-Front Facing Camera: Only worthwhile if Skype ever makes an app. Besides that I still don't see much of a point.
-4G: Always a welcome addition, but I don't want it if it's going to adversely affect battery life.
-At least 32GB NAND: High quality NAND memory is still not that cheap, so I think the minimum should be 16GB (that's more than most people would ever need).
also voted for GPU, since this MS's mobile gaming rig. or so they said

Good luck with the PSP thing, apparently the PSP2 is just as powerful as the current PS3. If Microsoft can make their next generation of WP7 phones better than that, I would be more than impressed.
Depends on the technology really and coverage.

1080p is a terrible thing to want in a phone. look at file sizes of 720p. then consider post-processing, editing, and emailing/uploading somewhere.
check out some of the forums that deal with shooting amatuer action (motorcycling/bicycling/bowling/whatever) in HD and see what they're saying. 1080p is nuts. if we're not careful we'll end up with no option for lower quality, and a 5 second clip that is 75Mb !
that's all

Better GPU comes with dual cores. Multi core is mainly for media and gaming. The mobile gaming market is headed towards PC capabilities.
FFC, Skype purchased Qik. Don't know if they will make it to WP7 though. Me personally I don't care, but having the option to use a FFC means everything.

I want to talk about quadrant score.

I know a lot of people are using quadrant to get an idea of system performance, and I did some playing the other day so I wanted to discuss what I noticed.
On monday I went into the verizon store to use my upgrade to get a new phone. Coming from the droid incredible, I was going to stay with HTC as I love sense and I love HTC phones.
so i started installing quadrant on all the phones I was interested in, the Dinc2, thunderbolt, and charge. This store also sells att phones as well, so i installed quadrant on the HTC desire and the sansung infuse.
the HTC phones all scored almost 2x as high as the samsung phones. the thunderbolt hit 1980 or some craziness, while the DCharge and the Dinfuse got about 950.
so initially i thought "wow those are slow im getting an HTC"
but then i WATCHED the quadrant run on the phones.
when pressing start at the same time on the HTC thunderbolt and the Charge, the Thunderbolt got into the graphical part of the test about 2 seconds faster. however, when you watch the framerates on the renderings, the charge is easily 2x faster. during the "walk down the hallway" part the thunderbolt was getting 15-17fps while the charge was getting 30-40, during the "dna" rendering, the thunderbolt was again about 12-15 while the samsung was in the 30s.
so.. what did that mean? I wanted to find out. I installed several live wall papers on each phone, and yup... the samsung was able to run the live wallpapers without bogging down the UI, the same live wallpaper on the thunderbolt cause sense to skip a little when switching screens.
however, i noticed that when the samsung is downloading and installing apps, it starts to become pretty laggy until the install is over.
Overall thoughts:
i think quadrant is ONLY measuring the CPU power of the device. The thundebolt seems to have better processing ability when it comes to CPU intensive tasks, like installing programs or unzipping files, but it seems to severely lack behind in GPU rendering. While the Samsung is lagging behind in the CPU department and doing very well on the GPU end.
All in all i would say that the difference between processing power is less drastic between the 2 than the GPU performance between the 2.
I hope this helps some of you out there when trying to interpret Quadrant scores and what they actually mean.
Even with a quadrant score of nearly double the droid charge, it still struggles to run a simple live wallpaper as easily as the charge can.
The Thunderbolt and other HTC phones use the Snapdragon processor, which is a great CPU, but not so great GPU, hence the bad frame rates. The reason that the Samsung phones bog down when installing stuff is more from the fact that Samsung created a proprietary file system based on FAT to use for everything, and the IO performance isn't so great. Voodoo Lagfix can really speed up the IO of the phone, reducing the lag you see and also bringing the Quadrant numbers up closer to that of the Thunderbolt, etc. I'm getting 1700-1800 in Quadrant on my Charge, not that the scores mean anything.

that's interesting, I had been reading about the voodoolagfix but wasn't entirely sure what was going on with that.
What we need is a phone with HTCs processor and Samsungs GPU lol.
So what causes Iphone to be soo incredible smooth? I hate apple, but i have to admit that their UI is incredible smooth and damn near flawless on screen transitions and GPU rendering. It seems like almost all android phones are more powerful hardware wise, yet even the smoothest UIs out there still stutter compared to Apples UI

Probably like you noted during the Quadrant tests, Apple's GUI takes full/more advantage of the GPU since they control both the hardware and software. There aren't multiple chipsets out there to cater, so all the programming efforts can be concentrated to just one setup.
IIRC, that's the job of Android GB/ICS. The base OS is there, now little tweaks need to be made to optimize for the various hardware. Well get there soon enough, I hope.

[Q]Torn between Phones

Hi all,
Since the Evo 3D was announced I was determined to get it but just near the launch i hear they removed 1080P video recording :S which is sh!t if you ask me. Now you know I love technical features and im pretty sure the whole 3D pictures and videos thing is a bit of a gimmick. Ive seen 3d Movies in the cinema and all it does is give you a very slight feeling of depth in a 2d picture. Nothing like how they advertise in IMax where it looks like someones coming out the screen lol. So if thats the capabilities of IMax what will it be for this tiny HTC phone?
I currently have a Samsung Galaxy S and I love it. The camera is good the features, the power and especially the Super Amoled screen. Its gorgeous.
Im sure many have pointed out before that the touchWiz interface is absolutely boring. There is no sense of design or thought in it. Im sure people just sat around and decided "well lets make some icons and then stick it in an iPhone-like menu". On the other hand HTC give a higher resolution AND the amazing HTC Sense 3.0 interface. It is absolutely lovely. I had an HTC before (TyTN) and when i changed the crappy windows UI for the Sense UI it was well worth all the hassle of learning to flash roms and so forth.
So now I present you a summary:
Samsung Galaxy S 2 Pros - 8MP camera, Full HD Recording, Super Amoled Plus, better benchmark results than the Evo 3d
Samsung Galaxy S 2 Cons - No 3D (?), Annoying TouchWiz interface, Same old design (of the phone)
Evo 3D Pros - 3D Cameras (?), Dual LED, Nice HTC Sense Interface, HTC Speaker is always LOUD, downright sexay lookin
Evo 3D cons - no 1080P Recording!!, Alot less powerful than the galaxy s 2, no amoled
So what do you guys think i should do? any opinions?
I'd go with the sgs2 just for the raw power then put a sense rom on it....many of them are great. But at the same time, if you are looking at an evo 3d that means you are on sprint like me, and we dont have sgs2 yet. It depends on if you want to wait or not. Personally, because of the power an sleekness i believe that the sgs2 is more future proof. Or you could go the same route as me and just wait for the Nexus 3....if it ever gets announced
See the thing is im in the middle east im not on sprint and the evo 3d has not been released here yet
tell me more about the sense roms is there one for the galaxy s i9000? And is there already one for the gs2? If there is something like that for the gs2 then i will take that although i do think the evo 3d has better design the gs2 could have used more buttons at the front so what about these roms?
tmobile g2x vs the sensation
anyone has any experience with these phones
and which do you prefer and why
sorry is starting a new thread and forgot to go back to general
Evo's camera is really messed, get the sgs2, it'a much better phone under every other aspect as well imho. 3d feature is bull and will bore you after a day i bet...
how bad exactly are we talking? and i had a look for the htc sense rom on galaxy s but its still in development... i have to say i really really like the htc sense UI and the last htc i had has a pretty nice camera and that was only 2MP
Edit:
I was browsing around the reviews and i saw a few clips of Evo 3D recording... Was disappointed that such quality can come from an expensive high end 2011 phone. i mean i think the original galaxy S has better quality from its 5MP camera.
So instead of constantly baiting myself with reviews about Evo 3D and comparisons (which mostly turn out in GS2's favour anyway) I thought id look at a GS2 review.
I gotta say its amazing, its absolutely blazingly fast. I change my opinion there is no more competition the GS2 is way better Why? because:
Evo 3D has worse quality than what i originally thought
The Evo 3D scores ~1900 on benchmarks (quadrant)
My Galaxy S scores 1600 on benchmark after darkys rom so why should i shell out so much cash for 300 benchmark points??
Some people said Evo 3D is still new and I should wait for some optimizations. Taking this into consideration it occured to me that even if the Evo 3D manages to hit 2800 (and i guarantee there is only so much optimizing you can do that it will not cross 2800) it still wont be as powerful as a SGS 2.
Think of it in terms of cars, I have a V6 and i can race quite a few V6s on the roads. Now if i were to modify my car i can easily beat a V8. But what if the V8 gets modified too? So as such wait till darkys crew gets their hands on the SGS 2. I mean they added about 700 benchmark points on my i9000! It just shows the durability of the SGS series to allow a huge optimization and customization. For example the headphones volume was not loud lo and behold there came the Voodoo kernel app to give a boost. Now you tell me, if a phone allows you to fix every single niggle that u hate about it is that not a perfect phone?
Im not saying the Evo 3D is bad but the galaxy S 2 really kicks its ass in terms of speed.
Now about the UI:
Sure HTC sense is nice but I never actually saw the TW 4.0 UI up close. After watching a number of reviews my conclusion is, its not bad at all! Seriously, check it out. Its got 3D rendering, its got folders in its menu. It no longer looks like a cheap iPhone clone! It is really really slick. Its got a video editor a native chat application and FULL 1080p recording with flash. I was never too concerend about camera quality because im not much of a photographer but man oh man can you see the difference. As for the screens? the AmoLed doesnt even give the Super LCD of the Evo a chance!
Ive decided, SGS 2 it is!

Sony Xperia Play Vs HtC Sensation

I own a Sony Xperia Play r800i I believed unlocked on T-mobile US and I also own a HTC Sensation 4G.
Now the Sensation of course has a slightly bigger screen at 4.3 inches and the screen is a bit darker being QHD vs the Play's LCD i believe.
But I am trying to decide which phone I should keep and which phone I should sell and i was playing with both phones at the same time and I noticed that my Sensation is sometimes right on spar speedwise and often times behind the Xperia Play.
Which is baffling b/c the Sensation is 1.2 GhZ dualcore vs the Play's 1GHZ single-core.
Example:
Launching both HTC Contacts & Sony Contacts, the Play always loads the same contact faster. Sense tends to have to "load" the contact for a second or two when the play automatically launches it.
I'm using Go launcher on both with the same theme and the rotate times on both phones is equal though at times the play tends to rotate faster and the app drawer opens faster.
But the Speed of the browser is what baffled me the most. Now the Sensation is 4G so i didn't use T-mobile network speed. I used my own wifi connection to test the browsers.
I went to 3 different sites with both phones at the same time and loaded the pages. Flash was enabled on both phones and the Play loaded faster. Granted the Sensation did start showing pictures and text first by the end of the load times, the play loaded faster.
So how is this possible that a 1GHZ phone can best a Dualcore phone? I wish I still had my Galaxy S2 to test it.
Have you tried your phone against Dual-core phones?
Personally i am a bit torn on which to keep.
The Play does work out of the box the way it should however the Cameras on the front and back are awful though the Sensation is only slightly better....
The Sensation is an attractive device with a slightly brighter and bigger screen but at the same time it can be slow and the call quality is not great at all tbh.
It's OKAY but eh.
I wish I could root them both to see which is better but no clue where to begin.
Have you tried your phone against Single core phones? Notice any differences?
Well on stock our Sennys do have dual cores but the phone does not utilize the second one until it's needed. It reduces the strain and battery usage. It's been stated in many different threads.

Well given that I just got this phone and I only started frequenting this forum just last week or so, I didn't know that
SO to make sure I understand, essentially both my play and Sensation are only using 1 core until the Sensation actually needs to use the second One? If that is true, then would it have to "need" to use the second core.
If the day to day performance if the xperia play is only slightly behind (or maybe better?) than that of the sensation, then I say what the heck keep the xperia play.
I only say this because I'm a big fpse fan and the fpse experience on the xperia play is unmatched.
But that's just the opinion of a grown up gamer who is still trying not to let go.

LOL i understand
The gamepad is unmatched really when it comes to gaming.
THe only thing really is the camera really of the play...it is utter crap.
Well, not crap really but i have seen much better 5 megapxiel camera and the Front Facing camera is even worse
Though the Sensation isn't the best either.
Such a tough decision and Idk what to lol
for gaming sensation will be absolutely better, a lot better!
consider that Sensation got a new cpu and games are to be optimized for it and for its dual core cpu, that use only 1 core if 2° not needed
For the pad, xperia own it, and there is no discussion, for gaming is better than touchscreen
But if you search for pure performance, Sensation is A LOT BETTER
Sensation btw, lacks on OPENGL driver, and sucks at that benchies.. But for sure it will be fixed by HTC soon, maybe with official ICS

[Q] What should I be excited about in my next Nexus device?

I've had my Nexus S since official launch day in late 2010. I still love it. I've been mildly tempted to replace it with the Galaxy Nexus a few times.
I'm somewhere in the middle between amateur and power-user. I enjoy rooting my device and installing custom roms, but I don't go beyond that. Also, once I find a rom that works well for me, I generally keep it for several months or more.
I'm trying to figure out what is potentially on the horizon that I should find exciting in the mobile device world - any thoughts? I'm asking more about things that actually improve my daily use of the phone. Right now, I have email and calendar push-sync (important for work), fast web browsing pretty much anywhere I go (typically getting 3-6Mbps anywhere I am), and can easily stream movies and music. What could I ask for that would actually improve my phone experience?
1. Bigger screen - obviously has its ups and downs - for me wouldn't make any positive impact.
2. Higher resolution - this is cool, and was one of the main reasons I was tempted by Galaxy Nexus, but again, wouldn't actually make any difference to me. I don't have any interest in gaming on my phone, beyond Angry Birds or Cut the Rope-type games.
3. Better camera - always nice, but for my use, the camera on Nexus S is more than adequate.
4. Faster data speeds - wouldn't help me at all. As long as I can stream TV and movies (which I already can), I have no need for anything faster, particularly if batter life is impacted.
5. Updated OS - this is probably what would tempt me most, due to my incessant need to always run the newest software available. Not sure what actual improvements it will have, though...
I guess my point is, I look at the latest and greatest devices out there (GS3, OneX, etc.), and I think to myself, "If I had that device, what benefits would I have compared to my Nexus S". And honestly, I can't think of a single one.
Any thoughts!
Thanks!
I think almost the same as you. Thinking about change my Nexus S, but it make almost everything I need already. If I change, it's only too see something new, hehe.
I think part of this speaks to how great the Nexus S is. In nearly 18 months of bigger screens, dual-core and quad-core, higher resolution, bigger batteries, LTE, etc., I've barely even been tempted to switch. I think that Google pushing out ICS to the Nexus S so early was a huge "lift" to my deciding to hang onto it for so long.
The nexus S has a more compact design and better audio both from speaker and headphones. The camera isnt better on the galaxy nexus, only video recording is. The screen is higher resolution but has so many horror stories about it. I personally didnt like the colors that much on the galaxy nexus especially the whites which were the worst I have ever seen on an AMOLED screen. But apparently there are good and bad screens of galaxy nexus so maybe I saw the bad one.
The most tempting thing for me is dual core CPU and 1GB ram, 2 areas where the nexus S is notably behind now and it really does enhance smartphone experience to have dual core CPU and more ram. And obviously it will get updates faster in the future provided the nexus S gets anything at all which it may not after 4.0.4.
The galaxy nexus also looks so damn epic, one of the best looking android phones for sure. And textured plastic back >>> glossy plastic anyday.
The disappointing parts of the galaxy nexus for me are,
- screen is not as good as reviews would have you believe
- speaker sound is disastrous
- Not much of an upgrade in GPU from nexus S, just higher clocks
- too big
I suppose since you are an i9020 owner it would be easier for you to switch to galaxy nexus since you are used to SAMOLED screens. I have an i9023 and just love the SC-LCD on it, the galaxy nexus screen seems like too many compromises for those infinite blacks.
same dilemma
Same issue as me, not sure whether I should upgrade or not. I've always been a "nexus behind" in that I held onto the N1 when the NS came out and only bought the NS when the GN came out. It's been cheaper for me since I had to pinch money in college.
Now that I have a job and income, I'm really tempted to finally catch up and buy the GN even though I'm extremely satisfied with my NS...

Web browsing can max up nexus S ram pretty quickly which causes lag and launcher redraw on exit. Web browsing is perhaps the biggest advantage of dual core and 1GB ram especially if you like to use desktop versions.
There can be serious lag in doing anything when an app is being updated in the background I had to turn off automatic update for that and I think the single core CPU might be to blame for that.
With more ram you can run more third party apps that have background services. The ram is perhaps the biggest limitation of nexus S. It's almost impossible to play games smoothly when you are online on skype because it eats so much ram.
And lastly there are a few games now which lag on nexus S and I believe again the ram or CPU are to blame for that as we have very good GPU for our resolution.
But when it comes to screen and sound, nexus still holds its own against the new phones and provides a very satisfying multimedia experience.
I am personally still thoroughly satisfied with nexus S overall and will wait for the next nexus phone(or series of phones) to come.
happy with my nexus s, but if I had the chance and was able to afford it, I'd ditch it for the GS3 any day
why i want to upgrade:
1. more RAM, power.
---------- DEFINITELY something I found myself always wanting while watching videos on the browser.
---------- Annoying waiting for important apps such as dialer/camera to load up.
2. larger, hd screen. (especially for watching videos; something i do often)
3. camera
I also just wait for next nexus this december..
Buying galaxy nexus seem not worth it for me..

I agree about waiting on the next Nexus release. I really like my NS still and I skipped out on the Galaxy Nexus. Now that we know a SERIES of Nexus's ( :what: ) are coming I'm definitely holding out. The S3 sounds great but the new Nexus line may out shine that later this year.

I'd have to agree with everyone about the NS shortcomings when compared to today's phones. To add to the list is the internal sdcard. I will NEVER get another phone without a removable sdcard. 16GB is just not enough.
Unfortunately, my NS is also sensitive to overclocking and crashes often even with raised voltage. Anyway, it's still a good phone holding it's own for 18mos.
PS: i, too, will wait for the next Nexus.

I would also say ram and cpu are pretty big improvements.. Although I'm waiting for the next nexus as well. It's only a few months away and it's gonna blow the gnex out of the water for sure.

Good explanation, thanks! Glad to hear that the RAM and CPU improvements will make a nice difference in my next device, even for daily tasks.

What do you use to fill all this storage? I used to hold music on my phone and quickly maxed out the 16GB limit, but Google Music has completely obviated my need to hold files locally.

Some people aren't lucky enough to have multi-GB or unlimited data plans, let alone decent service to begin with. I'm also weary of sound quality with many online services too - i know what's going on with my own files.

Couldnt agree more with this.
I think it would be wiser if waiting for the next nexus
Gnex is good but is not good enough
For some reason I've never actually been attracted to the thought of replacing my NS with GN. I'm happy with my NS and recently, I've been tempted to get the SGS3. I've been tempted but my NS does everything I need and well, I think I'll wait till the next Nexus device shows up. Long live NS!
