I personally see no point in it, as the mail app covers all the basis, and the gmail app doesnt come with a widget...but I have a google branded phone, and could completely understand why I couldnt delete it (like how the IM app and the market are somehow closely related, and the deletion of one screws the other over) as it may cause issues.
On another note, is there a list somewhere that has all the apps safe to remove?

After following the advice of a responder to my original question, I moved the gmail.apk and gmailprovider.apk to my sd card, then removed them completely from system/app. I have rebooted, found no errors (downloaded an app from the market as a test, and also emailed myself) and most importantly, for the first time, have not had to resign into my google account upon reboot. Dont know if it was luck or wat, but Ive had to resign in everytimw (not a big de, but other then the intermitent lights, its the only bug Ive found with dcv1)
Im sure most of you are satisfied with the gmail app, but I personally prefer the mail app, as you can link more than one account and it has the widget. Ive noticed no delay in recieving or sending or any error outside of the mail/gmail app. Thought you all might be interested in knowing my findings

You can ADB into the phone and manually remove it, I believe.

All 17 pages of 'Apps Safe To Remove' talked nothing of gmail, other than how rming other apps effected Gmail; the search function brought up no answers, unless I missed something (which is very possible )

Try moving it and not completely removing it? Then if the phone crashes/wont work, you can move it back to it's proper location through recovery..?
I've never wanted to remove the stock gmail app, since the standard app doesn't requires checking of email, whereas the gmail app is a push email (I think?) I get notifications of gmail faster on my phone than I do on my PC.

I searched that thread, and every other one that came one while searching "remove gmail" but found nothing of use. I am fully aware of how to remove it, Im simply curious as to whether or not its SAFE to remove.

The email is delivered to your phone real time, as opposed to polling on a chedule (i.e. every 30 minutes).

The gmail servers notify your phone when you have a new email, instead of the phone polling the servers for new email (that is pull)
Saves battery life as your phone can sit idle and wait for google servers to tell it to get mail.

My battery life has been amazing since flashing DCV1. Ill definatly have to keep an eyye on that. Thanks for the response!

Have you guys tried using Exchange ActiveSync in the mail app for Gmail, this will make it push rather then pull. I believe you need to use m.google.com as the server, and change the frequency to "as items arrive".
Is the sign in thing really annoying? it only happens when you go to airplane mode or reboot. I dont think its a big deal it dont effects me at least

In my edit I stated it wasnt a big deal. Just a work around, to one of the few bugs left in dcV1.

Just a heads up, I still get the sign in error after I removed both apk's. I got it after rebooting and putting the phone into airplane mode.
Good attempt at trying to resolve the issue though!

Then you might just be screwed. Current speculation is that the trackball thing is intentional. If you check...whenever you get e-mail or a text message the trackball lights up. This behavior is quite possibly intended and a possible change for the 'official' 2.1 ROMs.

I can confirm that this is not a fix. I've had gmail deleted for weeks now (using k9 for pushing work and personal email) and I've still been getting the sign-in notification.
I was also thinking you need that for the market.

Ok. It should play the default alarm tone you have set. Could you pastebin a logcat, from before you click "play sound" until the notification appears.

Well that's why! I figured it would play it's own notification. I have the alarm volume set to 0 because I don't ever use it.lol
It would be nice if you had a configuration for that in the app or the portal.

I haven't included an "alert" sound yet, as I thought people would recognise their own alerts easier. I like the idea of adding a customise option to the app though Thanks!

Hmm that's weird. It didn't change the volume, but when I manually did it, the sound worked. Other than that, the app looks and works great!
One more suggestion though, idk if it's possible, could you have it force turn on gps? I normally leave it off so if I actually do lose my phone, it would just give me the giant radius of the cell tower location...
Also, I notice you're using dyndns. Is the computer/server you're running it on going to be up 24/7?

Sorry, starting from Android 1.5 cupcake, you cannot programmatically toggle GPS. It should be fine to leave it enabled though.

I have read through the SDK documentation and the best you can do is prompt the user to enable it. So kind of misses the point
I have also altered the JavaScript code so that clicking on the location refresh button zaps you to the marker instantly, but you still have to wait until the phone updates the server to see the latest result

I also thought of some wicked uses for the Nexus S, but that will have to wait until I get time ( here's a clue: Peekaboo! )

it sends notifications to your PC, when you got event on your mobile,
best case when you are charging your mobile in a room, and setting in another..
however you can use it in different purposes ...
the phone and the PC should be on the same LAN,
in future i may upgrade it to work over the internet ...
it notifies for those events:
1- Incoming Call (shows the caller number to)
2- Outgoing Call (someone using your mobile to call a number)
3- Your mobile is fully charged (in case you were charging it)
4- Someone unplugged the power of the charger.
5- New Incoming SMS.

Sounds great, but I think setting this up might be a tad harsh for general use (firewalls etc). I would suggest building an intermediary platform (web service) to communicate to. That way you can have a very easy setup. For instance, you can use the Google login service to identify yourself from the phone and the notification program and that's it then. No IP's or port numbers as most users don't know what that is anyway.
But for the techies, good start.

What a great find... The integration with Growl will be excellent on my HTPC. Also, this allows easy integration with EventGhost through Scripty.

Have you ever heard of...dare I say it...variation of ideas? Just because there is something similar out there, does not mean it is identical. Please do not spam dev's threads with others work.
he's right though, there is google voice add on for chrome that does this, mighty text, and that last one he mentioned.

its not a waste of time, and for sure i have learned couple of things while developing this app, its not a waste at all.
otherwise you will see a single app for each purpose ... on pc\mobile ...
one more thing .. why do you think there is Windows , Linux and Mac??

Using bluetooth maybe ? PC as a handset (would have to be paired before)
I understand then distance range would come as a limit for many use cases, but could still be enjoyable instead of standing up to pick up the phone !

I just started developing for Android and the Sony Smartwatch because i missed so many functionality on my Smartwatch and the apps where missing in the market.
Some of them are done after people asked they want a app like that. For example the GPS Maps apps and the whatsapp notifier.

Regarding the mail app, the "action toast button" doesn't do anything.
Also if i put my phone in airplane mode at night i get a flood of "failed to connect to server" messages. Would be sweet just to have one error which clears after the connection returns if possible.
Whatsapp notifier, don't use the open on phone option for now as it will stop alerting on new messages.
Seems as though something else stops it notifying time to time but don't know what triggers it. Disabling and enabling app fixes it.
If received two messages and both have been unread, will show an alert saying "2 new messages"rather than the actual messages. Customnotifier does the same thing so there may not be a workaround.
I'm here to continue testing at your will. Your apps will be great to end up on the market.

Good morning beowulf, thanks again for the multitude of apps, one question, the GPS google map seems too enlarged on my smartwatch to the point that i almost cannot see the blue triangle which i assume is my location, is there a way to zoom out? thanks

I just started developing for Android and the Sony Smartwatch because i missed so many functionality on my Smartwatch and the apps where missing in the market.
Some of them are done after people asked they want a app like that. For example the GPS Maps apps and the whatsapp notifier.
So if you miss some app for your smartwatch i might look at it to make it.
So here they are:
the Mail notifier (1.0 Beta):

is using the javamail library for android. So there might be some bugs in it from me and from the library. For example there is a bug-report for the library that getting mails from pop servers is not working right. But you can still try it of course.

shows the current/future event of your default calendar and you can swipe to the left/right to see the next or previous Event with time and description.
WhatsApp notifier (2.1 Beta):

shows a notification from the WhatsApp application when it is installed and running with notifications enabled. (still buggy as it looks.)

well done fourthw!! I was looking for some extra applications for my smartwatch too!! I was especially looking for an app for what's up!! Please dont stop and keep working on them! I will give you my, unfortunately, little help!!

1) is it possible to have a skype notificator ???
2) do you know the name of the application which shows how much you are running that is on the smartwatch adversiting video???

The light version works with the smartwatch as well. I use it all the time. Really slick.

The gps maps app does not work on my sgs2. It only shows a white screen. I only saw the map once for a short moment.
Hi. The loading sometimes takes a bit long.
But you can try the new version of it which will hopefully soon be available from the google market.
It is uploaded and published so look out for it. But i will hint to it as soon as i see it in the market. (I hope i am allowed to post links to my apps in the market)
It will have some new features you will hopefully like.
(You will need to remove the old version manually though)

I think i already found a bug though. It seems as soon as the app is closed and reopened on the watch that there is stil a old picture flickering. Will look at this. I would be happy if you continue to test and report bugs and ideas.
Just downloaded it from the Play Store!
Still not working though. Even the gps does not stop after closing the app.

yes. was the same cause of my problem with the flashing screen.
i hope i finaly fixed it. I already updated the app in the market and i hope it works now for you now without a white screen.

but my request is u better minus "open in phone" function since it will break the app after ward

I find the app still breaks here and there and i don't use the open function.

Installed and booted fine, seems to be working all good!
Now to dig through it and see whats working and whats not haha
Not found anything that does not work yet... but then again Im probably not testing things that other people ma use.
MMS is working for me no problems, I have installed many many games/app's and they are all working.
Comes with Nokia Camera Extras/contact share already installed.
I installed Nokia Drive no problems.
If anyone wants me to test something specific, let me know.

Ok, one thing thats anoying me slightly, is that I cant get it to sync with Facebook in Settings/accounts...

Yeah the app works, but I want all my facebook contacts/numbers etc to sync together haha

Has this issue been resolved? I'd love to test this ROM out and Focus 1.4 gets so few ROMs anyway.
Another important feature for me is the option of "Static IP". Can the OP confirm its availability?

The Static IP option in the Wi-Fi section is there matey.
Not sure on the FB issue though, I cant see any later versions of anything :s

Didnt seem to work for me, I get the same oops error.
I take it by this you mean go to people hub, then open bottom menu/Settings then click Add facebook?

I am not sure what it means, since I don't have the ROM installed. I am waiting for this sync issue to be sorted out; it's a deal-breaker for me.
Even I understood it the same as you, perhaps you're in a better position to understand the discussion in that thread (link). Check out the last post in that page.
