While a lot has been written, the following should provide an easy-to-follow guide:
Preparation:
1. A torch (read on and you will know why)
2. 256M SD card
3. Download ntrw.exe, romupdate.exe, hexedfull.exe from the ftp of this forum to c:\ and install hex editor
4. Download the appropriate ROM file (hereafter referred to as "newrom.nb1").
5. Cancel USB in ActiveSync
6. Use Sprite Backup to backup your ppc
Backup original ROM:
1. Put pocket pc into the boot loader mode (hold both on/off and camera buttons at the same time while resetting).
2. Insert empty SD card.
3. Connect pocket pc to pc through USB.
4. Run romupdate.exe on pc.
5. Select “\\.\WCEUSBSH001” in port settings. In the popup windows, enter “d2s” and press enter.
6. Don’t get panic to see the pocket pc screen goes dark. Use your torch and you will see the download percentage. Wait until it reaches 100% and shows “CheckSum is OK!”.
7. Insert SD card into card reader of the pc. Ignore the “format SD card” message and click “No”.
8. Run “command” to go into DOS prompt and change to root directory (cd c:\). Enter “ntrw read oldrom.nb1 s:” where s is the drive of your SD card.
9. Ignore the “Data error <cyclic redundancy check>” message. You should save another copy of this important rom file “oldrom.nb1”.
Change header of newrom.nb1:
1. Right click on oldrom.nb1 to open hex editor. Copy the first 416 bytes.
2. Open the downloaded newrom.nb1 file and overwrite the first 416 bytes with those of the old rom.
3. Save the edited newrom.nb1. You may save another copy of this important file.
4. Go to the command prompt and enter “ntrw write newrom.nb1 s:” to write it to the SD card. Ignore the error message “The parameter is incorrect”.
Update the ROM:
1. Insert SD card into pocket pc and put it to boot loader mode again (on/off + camera + reset). Use you torch to check the dark screen.
2. When it shows “Press Power to flash”, press the on/off button. Wait until it reaches 100% and ignore the message “Download Fail - CheckSum Fail”
3. Soft reset your pocket pc.
4. You may have to reinstall your software, unless you are familiar with the advanced features of Sprite Backup.
Ask you a question.
Does it backup 3 parts of rom (OS rom, extended rom and Radio rom)?
I am trying to backup my old Qtek Rom so I can install an update. I follow the steps to perfection..
The file created by ntrw is 999Mb big and at the end of the file I get an error stating that "parameters are incorrect"
Does this mean that the backup was not done successfully?
Why is the file so large?
Thanks for your help
ntrw get image SD card. Use SD card 256 Mb.
SD Card update problem
Hi I used ntrw.exe to backup my original rom to an SD card. It all went ok and I was able to clear the SD, write the rom back on the SD and put it in my M500. Normally I got a menu to press the power button to flash the rom to my phone, but now whatever I do I can't get the menu back. I won't get the option "Press power button" to flash. What I also see is that somethimes when I put the SD back in my laptop it is totaly empty. Normaly it would ask me if I want to format the SD because it can't be read. Can anybody help??
Thanks!
Dear All,
this is my first time to this site.
Could you please send me the download links for the files that are necessary (or the files themeselves) to backup the ROM (ntrw.exe, romupdate.exe, hexedfull.exe )
Thanks a million.
Will
i found this http://www.ccoo.net/MDAFlash/ntrw.exe
Thank you for this wonderful guide !!!
I am trying to backup my I-Mate JAM's ROM with a 256 MB SD card. However I have a similiar problem where when the ntrw.exe completed with the same "parameters are incorrect" error. The created ROM image is about 247,040 KB.
Is this correct? I did make sure the SD card is empty before the backup process (by deleteing everyfile on it), or should I use some proper method to ensure the SD card is actually completely empty?
Thanks in advance for any help!
Mine came up with that every time, but worked ok. I am trying to do the Anasky ROM update to my magician, and the backup i made of the original rom was fine to restore, even though i got that error.

someone in this forum told us that the rom size is vary and closed to the size of your sd card.
I used 128mb to backup and restore, it worked fine.
Has anyone experienced the problem of trying to reflash the device with the SD and when placed in Bootldr, the display just says serial and never progresses to press power to flash??
thanks
Jim
turn off the USB connection in your activesync, it will interfere the upgrade.
Found the fault, I reconnected the USB whilst entering the bootldr with the SD in socket and worked fine... Quite strange though as I couldnt remember having the USB connected the lasst time I performed the process

Hi All,
I was stuck at the Serial for a Looooooong time. Nothing worked. Until I did the following:
1) Using HHDHexeditor, copy the first 416byte (NOT 220byte!)
2) Write the copied original backup ROM into the new ROM (.nb1 file)
3) Put into your 02 Mini
4) VERY IMPORTANT! - Plug into your USB PORT!
5) Then I see the "Press Power button to Flash!"
and I am happily flashing my device now ... My guess is that it needs to be on external power in order to upgrade .... Thanks everyone .. can't wait to see my new baby with 27Mb storage!
I'm using 256Mb SD Card ....
Alvin
How can i know the backup file name stored in the memory card? (*.nb1)
Thx~~
i am not seeing the popup window in which to select "d2s"...can anyone help?
update: Ok, so i was just temporarily blind! Have managed to continue and have fingers crossed it is ok.
2. When it shows “Press Power to flash”, press the on/off button. Wait until it reaches 100% and ignore the message “Download Fail - CheckSum Fail”
3. Soft reset your ppc.
After this.... how I do the soft reset with my ppc?? Connect or diconnect with the USB?? Coz I can't turn it back to the normal from boot loader mode even I do soft or hard reset after the rom flashing.......why??

WTF ??? The only options are COM1 COM2 or COM3 and the Baud rate.
What a POS!
I'm sure this has been covered but I could not finding it after 15 minutes of searching...
I'm currently running JF 1.42 RC33. After following instructions here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=468959 to move apps to SD card I am unable to boot phone. It was in a loop with the Android loading screen and kept flashing the screen going blank and repeat. I did take a nandroid backup before I started the whole process of moving apps to SD card. But turns out I can't use it as I still have the stock boot loader on my phone. I wiped my phone just so i could use it for the rest of the day but tonight I would like to try and load the HardSPL and load the nandroid backup I have on my SD card. Is this possible?
Thanks!

If you have adb and are still able to get into recovery mode (turn off the phone, then hold power + back), you can try this:
adb shell
echo /dev/block/mmcblk0 > /sys/devices/platform/usb_mass_storage/lun0/file
then download the hardspl and rename it to update.zip, then copy it to your sd card.
eject your sd card, and unplug it from your computer.
Press alt + S
to update, and it should load the hard spl onto your phone.
Thanks for your help. I'm still not 100% clear on what I need to do. I've wiped and back into my phone. Like I said I'm running JF 1.42 RC33 and have a nandroid backup. Can I install HardSPL in my current state (assuming instructions you provided) so I can load my nandroid backup?
Thanks and sorry for any confusion!
Well if you can boot up like regular, just rename the hard spl zip to update.zip, copy it onto your sd card, turn off your phone, start up by pressing power + home, and update by pressing alt + s in recovery mode. thats all.

How To Guide - Install CAB's - Flash ROM's - HardSPL - Flash via MicroSD
Welcome!
The world of Windows Mobile is glad to see you! There are millions of things you can do with Windows Mobile, and some of the coolest will be described here! Follow the Table of Contents below, or read through the entire page to learn all you can!
Table of Contents
How to Install a Program (CAB File)
How to Flash a Custom ROM (Upgrading to Windows Mobile 6.5)

HardSPL Method - Learn More
Flashing Options
If you want to run one of the many Custom ROM's out there, then you will have to learn how to flash first! To learn more about flashing, click here. You have two options:
USPL - Use this method if you plan to only flash occasionally. This is a "temporary" solution, that simply bypasses the CID security for the duration of the flash. This is not the safest method, but is useful for flashing once in a while! Use THIS PAGE to flash with this method.
HardSPL - This is a permanent solution. Use this option if you plan on flashing a lot. It is also the safest, once you are HardSPL. Also, this allows you to flash LZX ROM's, and flash via MicroSD. Click HERE to flash like this (Non-PDF Version)

Steps to flash using HardSPL: (PDF Version) (Written by Apreincher, many thanks!!!!!!!!!)
It is a good idea to flash back to stock ROM just to be safe. If you are using a T-Mobile Wing you can download it from T-Mobile or from this guide. If it's a Herald you can download it from this guide.
It is important that your IPL is 4.xxx or Higher. If it is not, do not attempt a HardSPL it WILL brick your phone. You can find out the IPL by going into Bootloader:
While holding the camera button do a soft-reset by pressing the stylus into the reset hole next to the volume slider. Release the reset switch while still holding the camera button. A colored screen will come up listing your IPL and SPL. If next to IPL it says 4.xxx or higher, proceed to step 2.
Reset back into your normal phone OS.
Go to Settings- Connections- USB to PC and check the checkbox on that page.
Install the 3 CABs in this order:
Canon Yang.cab
ASerg Policies.cab
Disable Security.cab
Soft reset the phone.
Download the HardSPL folder, extract it, and place it on the Desktop.
Run ROMUpdateUtility.exe located in the HardSPL folder. Update the ROM using the steps on the screen. The screen will become white, but wait until the phone reboots itself. It could be 10-15 minutes.
Phone should boot back into some strange looking ROM. This is the HardSPL ROM. So far so good.
Check your SPL by going to bootloader again. If it says 4.70.yang, you are good as gold and HardSPLed.
Okay so now how do I flash after I'm in HardSPL?
There are actually two ways to flash while you are HardSPLed. You can use the flash center method or the SD card method. Most LZX and Micro ROM's require you to flash through the SD card method.
Flash Center with HardSPL:
Open the HardSPL folder and remove the .nbh file that is located in there. Replace it with the .nbh file you downloaded with your favorite ROM.
Run ROMUpdateUtility.exe
You've installed a custom ROM on HardSPL.
Flash through SD Card with HardSPL:
Unfortunately, sometimes this can be a bit more complicated. Make sure you use an SD card and not an SDHC card.
Your storage card will hopefully be lower than 4 GB, or else it might have trouble locating the file. If your storage card is larger, you can partition it to be smaller. Also, no SDCH cards will work.
You must format that storage card to FAT32.
Now, you download the ROM (and uncompress it if it’s a .7z, .rar, or .zip file).
Place the downloaded and uncompressed ROM file (.NBH) into the root of your storage card. Also, you must rename it HERAIMG.nbh. (Captialized)
Put the SD Card into your phone, and with your phone turned on, hold the camera button down. While holding the camera button, press and release the soft reset button. Keep holding the camera button until a new, white screen appears.
If it displays a white screen with blue text that says Checking SD contents and then Update Image proceed to step the next step.
If it immediately goes into the colored bootloader screen, it appears your phone's bootloader is not finding your SD card. Some SD cards require special formatting for some reason. Plug the SD card into your computer using an SD card reading and right click on Computer and click Manage. Click Disk Management on the right pane. Select the SD card from the list and right click and select Format. Under Allocation Unit Size, select 4096. Format and ignore any errors. Proceed with steps 2-4. If it does not work even with this adjustment, your SD card might be too slow. Or you have a SDHC card which isn't easily recognized by bootloader.
This screen that you’re on will have a white background, with blue letters. It will search for your HERAIMG.nbh file, and once it finds it, it’ll give you 10 seconds to answer yes.
To flash the ROM, when it asks you if you want to flash this, press down on the volume slider. Weird, eh? Just do it.
Now, let it flash for a good 10 minutes.
Success! Press any key. Press down on the volume slider again, and you’re on the color screen now. Hold the power button to turn off the phone, and then turn your phone back on. Welcome to your new ROM!
If you are already HardSPL and something happens and flashing doesn't work and you find that your phone appears to be off and won't turn on. Don't panic. Go into Bootloader and use the Flash Center directions to flash a ROM.
Flash Center with HardSPL:
Download the HardSPL folder and remove the .nbh file that is located in there. Replace it with the .nbh file you downloaded with your favorite ROM.
Run ROMUpdateUtility.exe
You've installed a custom ROM on HardSPL.
Flash through SD Card with HardSPL:

Waitttt. going for the entire first page...If this turns into what Apreincher wrote up over the summer, then we'll need it!!!
I feel so bad that Apreincher never released all of his incredible guide, lol. He wrote everything up, from installing CAB's to HardSPL, and he wrote it well!
Is there even anyone that hasn't HardSPLed yet??? LOL. Maybe one person, out of the 3 of us, hasn't yet?
Anyone believe in 2012 doomsday? Watching the special TV show on it, and it's soooooo gonna happen! Who's gonna be there on friday, to see the movie?!?!?
I'm sure Ivan will be cooking till December 21, 2012, to the last second of the world LOL.
Done!!!! Post your thoughts.
Sticky??
Maybe this should be stickied Ivan???? It'd kind of answer everyone's HardSPL questions, and then getting HardSPL would be a breeze, thanks to Apreincher's clear and percise instructions!

ROFL. Nah, I might eventually move on to another major project or one of my other smaller projects. Although I'm working on a few things for the kitchen right now. I'm almost done writing this installer/updater that automatically checks the server for an updated version of the kitchen compared to the one you have in your PC. (It actually checks the OEM's, the EXT, the SYS/XIP and the main kitchens files separately and only updates the one that changed.)

Need help with flashing ROM from microSD
Hey peeps,
I have been trying to flash my TMo Wing to the Glass ROM, which is the rom I really want to use. I have been trying to flash by microSD. However, even though following the directions to the best of my ability, I have failed. _-_ I only see the 'Searching for card' screen for a second, then surpases to the bootloader screen. I have tried downloading all of Ace's -The Wingster's ROMs for the wing and some of Ivan's as well.
Now my desktop computer died on me recently (damn 8-pin molex connector on my mobo). So my torment has been downloading the .nbh files with my phone. I don't think that downloading by phone would have anything to do with the failure, would it?
I thought it was my microSD card, so I downloaded Flash-Format. I made sure to format my 1 gig card to fat32 with an 8kb cluster.
That didn't work, so I went out and bought another microSD. Formated with the flash-format to fat32 as well. This one is a 256mb.
Now, I was reading in the directions that speed may be an issue. Being that I cant format from the desktop, is it possible to change the speed by using the device itself?
Also I was reading that it is recommended to flash back to the original Tmo Wing ROM. Is this a possible reason that I cannot flash by SD?
I have already HardSPL'd and currently have a HERA1100 ROM WM6.1 Gullum ROM installed.
Thanks for any suggestions,
~Trib
ok iv been flashing for a few months now through flash center and never really had to many issues, well i flashed Big Rom 23081 and have had nothing but trouble, one of them being that i can no longer use activesync.
i went and got one of my smaller sd cards formatted it and put on just stable micro to the root of the sd card, ( did not add any folders) followed the directions of holding down camera button then the soft reset button, well nothing happens at best i get the window that asks me if i wanna turn off my device yes or no and my camera stays on.
is there a roundabout amount of time i hold the camera button before i push the soft reset button, and a amount of time i hold down the camera button before the white screen on.
iv been searching and for the life of me i cant figure out what im doing wrong, the only thing iv read that might make sense is flashing back to the original tmo rom but i cant do that because i cant connect to activesync.
anyone have an idea or suggestion of what to do?
thanks

Confirm the following:
You renamed the downloaded file "HERAIMG.nbh"
You extracted the .NBH file, if necessary. Some ROM's come compressed in .RAR or .7z format. You can use 7Zip to extract those.
You do NOT have a SDHC card? SDHC cards won't work.
It should work. Hopefully you can get something going.

You hold down the Camera button, and while you CONTINUE to hold down the Camera button, you press and RELEASE the Soft Reset button. Then, continue to hold the Camera button down until the bootloader appears.
Flashing back to stock wouldn't do ****!

Yes. I have made sure that my card is not a high capacity card.
The file is HERAIMG.nbh on my card (not in any folders).
And its not archived. I think it might be because I do not have the original ROM installed. Can someone link me to the original ROM that Tmo uses on the Wing?
Thanks again,

Nah, that doesn't make a difference if you have the stock ROM. Anyways, flashing the stock ROM will remove your HardSPL, soo, you would have to re-do your HardSPL!
I really don't know why it's not working, honestly.
I couldn't take it anymore so I went to my girl's mom's house and just flashed the ROM by Active Sync. I wish I could have been able to flash by sd. Sorry to get off topic, but does anyone else think that it is as agonizing as hell to use the new IExplorer? It loads so slow and takes a lot of time to render when zooming.
Also, what program do I use to have the same on screen keyboard as I did with M2D TouchFLO?
I really have gotten used to that layout.
And lastly, I don't understand for the life of me why the only browser that I use out of IE, Opera Mobile 9.7, Opera Mini 5 Beta and SkyFire, SkyFire is the only browser that is usable. The only one that can utilize the flash player. So what do you guys think,

I have the TF101 with the b90 serial. Ever since running the latest update my TF wont boot. It sits at the Asus eepc splash screen. It is not rooted running all the stock software. I have tried a number of things and all of them seem to fail.
Things ive tried;
-I have held the power button down for 20seconds a minute etc and it just goes back to the asus splash
-tried to hit the reset button on the side
-held down the power + volume down till white letters. tried the cold boot and the data wipe.
-tried to do hold down power + volume down and hit the volume up to do the RCK recovery and it loads for a quick second then gives me an Android logo with a yellow caution sign.
-going to asus site and taking the firm ware saving it to a microsd card and trying to boot the TF with the card in. no luck there either (unless i was doing it wrong)
Does anyone know a fix so i can get this thing working? Any help is appreciated. This is my aunts tablet so im new to the android OS.
Did you place the firmware in the root of the SD card and booted into recovery (power+vol-, vol+)?
yea i unzipped the file into the root of a sd card and did the power + vol - then volume+ when u see white writing and i just get the android olog with a loading bar for about 1 second then goes to a android with a yellow caution logo and sit there.
Ive never flashed a ROM on the TF using the stock recovery, so I cant really be sure if this is correct but...
On my Novo7Basic, you have to place the .zip file (not extracted) in the root of the SD card, and name it update.zip (I know the TF needs to be named something else, but I dont know what).
So you could try just placing the .zip file in the root of the SD card.
Just to make sure the sd card has to be formatted FAT32? I downloaded the us firmware off ASUS site and I unzip the original file u get off their site and inside there is another zip file i save that zip file onto the root of the SD card.
this is quite frustrating havent been able to use this thing for over a week. id be willing to root it or put cwm on it to reflash it but im not sure if i can do any of that without being able to get into the OS.
Did you rename the zip to EP101_SDUPDATE.zip ?
