[Q] Stuck on first step! - G Tablet General

I tried a quick search but it looks like everyone else here is at least smart enough to get past the first step.
I was attempting to follow the quide for clockwork and tnt however the clockwork file automatically downloads to my tablet memory instead of my sdcard. It seems like this is because my tablet memory file is labeled sdcard which auto labels my actual sdcard "sdcard2". I tried to rename the folders (wouldn't let me) as well as copy and paste clockwork via my PC but I can't see the sdcard on the PC. I tried mounting and unmounting the card and turning off the tablet but nothing seems to work.
So here I stand...finally choosing to root this thing and my idiot self can't even download the file!! Ha!
Feel free to give me a very hard time while also helping me out. I can take it.

I don't claim to be an expert, but you are right. The drive in the tablet is sdcard. The external card is sdcard2. And a USB drive plugged in is USBdisk.
If you are trying to burn ClockWorkMod, you will have to bring up the Recovery file on your PC when you un-RAR it -- open the "Command" file in something like Windows Notebook -- and edit the sdcard address reference in the command line to sdcard2 -- then save it and put it on your external card. You should have two files on the external card -- a Recovery folder and "Update.zip".
Then shut down and reboot holding down the Power Button and Volume + button. Should load by itself after that.
I offer the usual disclaimer about doing this at your own risk. Sometimes things go wrong even when you do it right.
I have been trying to save you time and grief -- but you also might be smart to search and read the many other threads on these forums about CWM installs.
And by the way -- I hope you are install CWM 8. I hear there are problems with the other version. Again, read!!!

[Q] Need help after recent update

I loaded the recent update on 12/24 and have not been able to use my tablet since then.. When turned on, it goes thru the ViewSonic screen and the gtablet screen, then just goes to a blank black screen.. It was stock before I loaded the last update..
I have tried to reboot using the power button and vol+
- if there is no microSD card in I get the following message
E: can't mount dev/block/mmcblk2
(no such file or directory)
E: can't mount SDCard2: recovery/command
Formating MISC:...
Rebooting...
- if there is a microSD card with the new download and recovery/command I get the following message
Formatting MISC:...
Rebooting...
Either way, I get a blank screen and no way to change things or update.
Is there anything I can do to get it working again?
This was all stock? Sounds like the flash update failed badly.
Suggestion -- reflash using one of the stock ROM's we've grabbed. Post info: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=842000. Quick instructions:
- Have a microSD card ready.
- Download the 3338 ZIP file, save it to the root of your microSD card and then rename it to "update.zip".
- Grab the homebrew 1.00 ZIP and extract just the /recovery/command file to the same folder in your microSD.
So, if your microSD is your F drive, you should have the following:
F:\update.zip
F:\recovery\command
- "command" is a text file. Open it in notepad and edit "SDCARD" to "SDCARD2". Make sure notepad doesn't add a .TXT extension when you save it.
Insert the microSD back into your device and reboot into recovery. If you're lucky your device will reflash and reboot.
If this all runs and you still get the same black screen on reboot, my next suggestion is to try one of the older firmware ZIPs and flash as I mentioned above.
edit due to Roebeet answering while I was
It was all stock, with a few added apps...
I tried to reflash the file as noted, with no success... same with the 12/19 -3316 update... it goes thru the recovery reboot, and then to the black screen...
A question on the recovery file.. my computer will not allow a "\" as part of a name... I have been trying this was a recovery file, with just the command file in it... if I need to do something different, let me know..

The instructions posted by roebeet should work. Make sure your microsd card is formatted as FAT32.
1. The file update.zip should be in the microsd card's root directory.
2. The folder recovery should be in the microsd card's root directory.
3. Inside the recovery folder there should be a file named command.
4. And inside the command file you should have the following line:
--update_package=SDCARD2:/update.zip
Still don't have it working.. I have tried all of the updates, and still have a black/blank screen once it goes thru the ViewSonic and gtablet screens..
I have noticed that when I take the sd card out, and check on my computer, that the recovery folder is empty, but I know it had the command file in it before..
any other suggestions??
I believe it's fixable but at this point you may be happier returning it for a new one. It sounds like your update download was corrupted and borked your install.
Not exactly what I wanted to hear.. but..
I called customer support, and got thru today (tried last night and was put on hold then the call dropped)... I was told I wasn't the only person who had this problem with the last update... they are going to send me instructions on how to send it in for repair...
The only I can tell you to try is the same thing Roebeet said earlier. If you have never installed clockworkmod recovery then go here and download the 3389 update
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=879534
Rename the file to "update.zip" ....make sure it doesn't get named update.zip.zip
Then go here and download cwm 0.8.zip
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=865017
Unzip the cwm0.8.zip and you should have this
update.zip
a folder named "recovery" with a file named "command"
update.zip.......DELETE THIS FILE
recovery/command
the command file should have this line in it
--update_package=SDCARD2:/update.zip
If you have a micro sd card then place the 3389 update file that you renamed to "update.zip" on the root of the micro sd card. Not in an folders
Now place the recovery folder on the root of the micro sd card. Make sure the "command" file is in the recovery folder.
When you open your micro sd card you should see this
recovery (folder)...."command" file in this folder
update.zip
Insert the microsd card into the GTab. Make sure tablet is off and then Press power and vol+. hold Vol+ until you see "recovery key pressed". It should install the 3389 firmware and reboot.
If something happens during the install or if your download is corrupted again always check the recovery folder for the command file because it will be deleted on install.
Just a thought, are you sure it has a good charge on the battery? When I first got my gtab I had a similar issue getting it to boot, until I realized the battery was drained

[Q] help w/ clockworkmod

Hi everyone, I'm a new android/gtab user and looking for some help with installing clockworkmod. I've followed some instructions from this web site. It looks like the installation goes through successfully because I see "Detect a recovery key pressed" followed by "Booting recovery kernel image" after pressing Power and Vol+. A package gets installed and the device reboots normally. they I power down again and try to enter clockworkmod by pressing the Power and Vol+ again and it just keeps doing the same thing over and over. I have in my root the update.zip file and a recovery folder. Am I supposed to delete these after installing? Any help is greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

Once the tablet boots once it deletes the command file in the recovery folder
Thanks, I've read it through and had the files on the internal SD card exactly as the image in the link shows. I get the message in the upper left corner saying "Detect a Recovery Key Pressed", and then a 2nd line that reads "Recovery Image Detected. After that I see the cardboard box. The tablet then reboots as normal and I do not see any signs of a clockworkmod menu. Can I use the built in data erase function to restore it back to factory conditions and start over? I have rooted it with z4root.

If you are installing from the internal sdcard make sure the line in the "command" file says "SDCARD" not "SDCARD2"
/sdcard/update.zip
/sdcard/recovery/command
The command file deletes every time you boot into recovery even if it doesn't install cwm. Make sure the file is there and pointing to the right sdcard.
You have to reboot after installing to get into the clockwork menu. Power/Vol+. If it doesn't go to cwm recovery it is not installed
Thank you very much! That did it! I did read your suggested link carefully but I guess I just didn't understand it enough to really "get it"
Thanks again!

i hate to start this up again but i'm having the same issue and followed the steps from the other thread about cwm and roms.. to my understanding i followed the instructions and downloaded the file then exstracted it and putting the update.zip file & recovery fold on my enternal sd card but each time i do this it boots up and the two lines of txt appear but once i delete the folders and push the pwr & vol + buttons it just boots up normal again. i think i may be doing something wrong while labeling the files but i've done this at least 8 times already and no dice.. i'm at the point of returning it if i cant manage to get this to work unfortunately i was so excited to get this tablet with such high hopes but now its just a head ache, well if anyone wouldn't mind to give me some pointers, i would be greatly thankful.

SDCARD!
Jalladi,
That is exactly what mine was doing until I edited the COMMAND file that is in the Recovery folder. In my case, I installed CWM on my internal card. After editing the COMMAND file to point to SDCARD instead of SDCARD2, it worked correctly. I used Notepad in Windows to edit the file while connected to my laptop.
Good luck!
Thanks for this forum, worked like a charm. FYI the command file does not have an extension (ie .txt).
I'm sorry I still don't understand, I'm trying to install on the internal card, but just keeps restarting. I see the recovery folder with command file. It doesn't have anything about sdcard or sdcard2. What do I do with the file to correct?
Thank you for your help!!

When you download CWM, you extract the contents of the file. The contents are an update.zip file and a recovery folder with a command file in there (no extension on the command file at all). The command file will have only one of the two lines below, depending on where you are installing from:
--update_package=SDCARD:/update.zip
--update_package=SDCARD2:/update.zip
SDCARD is the internal memory of the tablet, whereas SDCARD2 is the MicroSD card that you have in the SD Slot on the side of the tablet. The update.zip file and recovery folder with the command file inside of it should be placed on the root location of either your internal memory or your MicroSD card. I hope this helps. Good luck.

Memory and Stock Recovery Info

Everyone,
I've written this a bunch of times but and putting it in
it's own thread so folks can read and use it.
Memory and Storage:
/sdcard -- internal memory of the tablet
/sdcard2 -- microSD card in the external slot
/usbdisk -- USB key slot
Stock Recovery Info:
Main method: Put your recovery folder and update.zip on /sdcard, turn off the tablet, the press power and volume + to initiate standard recovery.
Second method: Put your recovery folder and update.zip on a microSD card. Edit the command file in the recovery folder with Notepad to change the location from /sdcard to /sdcard2 and save it with the name "command" (NO
.txt or other file extension). Then boot recovery with power/volume + and the OS will use the sdcard (assuming you don't have a live recovery/update.zip file in /sdcard).
Third method: If you can boot recovery to CWM but can't get your ROM to work, go in recovery to the mount menu and go down to the mount USB memory option and choose it. Then plug your connector cable from the miniUSB port to your PC. When you plug into your PC an Explorer window should open and you should have a drive letter representing the G-Tablet (it's G: on mine) on your menu. You now can select that letter and you have access to your tablet memory (/sdcard). I've even had a time or two when not a single file showed!!! I added update.zip and recovery and loaded
a ROM!
The tablet boot process apparently checks /SDCARD. If it doesn't find a recovery file there it does the same check if you have a miniSD external card installed. The large USB slot is not useable for booting or recovery so far as I have determined or read.
I hope this helps you.
Rev
EDIT: I didn't put one fact in here about recovery that everyone should know. When you run a recovery operation, the system deletes the command file so you can't accidentally do it again. If you have to run a recovery or
attempt to load something again, make sure you have a command file in the recovery folder with the correct command in it!!! Sorry I omitted this first time around.

Can you also add information about partitioning of /sdcard and why would one need it?
Is there another "hidden" flash memory available for firmware or all mods and custom ROMs go into /sdcard only?
Thanks so much, I thought I'm dead cuz I wiped out everything.
This may have been asked before, but how does one perform a full data wipe w/o using CWM? Thanks.

You need to use nvflash (nvidia tegra SoC flashing utility). There are alot of posts about it. Do be carefull if you go this route, as even though you will not damage your tablet, it may be difficult to put it back to a bootable state if you don't do it properly.
thanks!
thanks great. simple and to the point. should help people that get confused. thanks again!
Vlad_z,
It has been my experience that when somebody gets boot loops, it often involves a
partition problem. Also, sometimes the G-Tablet does flaky things. I have one I
just shut down. Restarted it with boot looping and had to rebuild.
The three locations listed above are the three memory places you can store stuff
unless you find software that custom sets up something else.

That's kind of odd, my removable sd card ended up with the label ex-sd. Doesn't seem to be messing anything up though.
sixtofive,
I've never seen or heard of that with the stock ROM. Are you running a different ROM?
Some of them do change the directories.
Rev
So simply put, we should copy and backup the recovery folder and update.zip in /sdcard (or tablet storage) and when things get f'ed up, we move the recovery folder and update.zip back into the /sdcard?
Maybe it's just me, but I looked into the recovery that was already in the tablet and there's nothing in it; is that normal? If not, can anyone provide the back up recovery folder and update.zip just in case?
sam,
Recovery is simply a folder which holds a file named "command" in it. Command is a file
that has the command line in it with the command and parameters to "recover" or "load" files onto your G-Tablet.
Sometimes when your tablet gets messed up, you can still use recovery and are lucky. But sometimes the recovery partition gets damaged and then you have to look
for other ways to get in and fix things.

Many of us keep telling people there is a lot to learn here -- and Android doesn't have
all the stuff built into it Windows does. Nor is Android known for it's great documentation!
If everyone would read all the stickies at the start of the forums, it would provide
probably 80% of everything they need to know.

If OP also put links to stock ROMs, that would be great
interesting...even though I don't have a microSD card in mine /sdcard2 seems to be a valid directory within "root explorer"
what partition and memory structure should I be seeing on my brand new g-tablet? any suggestion on "mount" and "df" output?
Question, which is the best method or quicker to backup before attempting other rom installs?
Deleting CWM
How would one delete CWM so that the tablet can be returned?
Got my gtablet last evening. Seems there is a lot to learn.
thanks butchconner...
Thanks all the people who are contributing at xda. You are doing a wonderful job. In fact I bought this device because of you ( I think Viewsonic owes you guys a lot. At least they avoided a big loss because of you. )
Two questions:
1) Is it recommended to flash back to stock before changing roms?
2) Is there a link to the stock Rom files that I am missing?
Thanks

Root Roms not showing up on SD card

Hey everyone, I recently decided that it IS worth it to root and flash a custom rom onto my 2.3.3 LG G2X but unfortunately I'm having a bit of trouble getting to that point. I just realized that I'm unable to post a link to the guides that I used until I have more posts :c Hopefully that won't be too relevant and if it is it won't be too difficult to find them since they're the only guides pertaining to rooting a 2.3.3 I could find. Anyway, after following those guides to the tee and reaching the final step of installing the zip from the sdcard, to much dismay I realized that the zip refuses to appear on the phone. If my laptop is to be trusted it is definitely on the root of the SD card so I have no idea why this is happening. Any suggestions or responses in general would be greatly appreciated!
I've also considered simply putting the zip on the phone's internal memory, but I'm kind of at a loss for how to get to it while the phone's in this state :/
Edit: I managed to access the internal sd card but unfortunately the zip does not show up there on the phone either
Also, if more information is needed please don't hesitate to ask! I'm new to android modifcations and wasn't really sure what else to put since the phone is pretty much entirely stock save for an lg driver to fix the white noise/clicking problem on calls and the apx drivers required for this process
I'm assuming that you used the NvFlash method so you should have clockworkmod recovery installed correct? If that is the case finding the rom you would like to flash will depend on the version of cwm recovery you used. The easiest thing to do is to place the rom (it's a zip file but do not unzip it) that you downloaded onto your internal sd card and also put a copy of it on your external sd card. Then reboot (or boot) into cwm recovery by holding the volume down button together with the power button until the LG logo changes to a different color and then let go of the buttons. It should take you to cwm recovery and from there use the volume buttons to navigate and the power button to select. Navigate to and then select "install zip from sd card", then "choose zip", and then the rom you placed on the sd card should be somewhere in that list. If it says choose zip from internal and choose zip from external you can pick either one and the rom should be in that list because you copied it to both. Hope that helps

[Q] HELP! Goophone i5 with damaged SD card

I have a problem with a goophone i5. First I had problems with it not having a signal but that got solved. Now a second problem came up. I plugged the phone in the laptop, clicked on 'turn on usb', after a while I clicked the 'turn off usb' on the phone. It was off, I unplugged and then it gave a warning "not safely removed, sd damaged", while it was safely removed! Now I can't do anything with it like download apps to it etc. It keeps giving that memory is full. So I assume the 8GB is damaged. I have no idea how to fix it, since I searched already, but it's not like I can take the 8GB out, since it's not removable. Do you know a solution or can you help me? Thank you in advance. When I plug the phone the card is just unrecognisable, therefore I can't format it in anyway :crying:

Hi mate!
You have there a problem! First of all goophone do not come with 8GB sd card storage. There are 2 different options: the 16GB and 32 GB so, first of all, try to see if you have a real goophone i5.
Then, there is a way to format the SD card. For that you must buy a Screw Driver to open it. After that take out the screws, pull up the display and you will see the sd card inside. Just unplug it, put it on a SD card Adapter and format it on your desktop.
It can give you SD card Damage for a few times, but ignore it and keep formating it until the warning disapears.
For the screw driver you just need to search on ebay. They are very cheap. So all you have to do is to buy one.
Hope this information helped you out.

Loren can I ask how you got a signal? I just have no service at top of screen. Driving me nuts,

Is there a trick to getting the glass to pull up? I've taken out the screws, and put the suction cup down near the home button, but when I pull the glass wants to separate from the bracket that holds it to the phone. There is a tearing sound, like adhesive giving away, and it's fighting me. I don't want to pull any harder for fear that I'm going to damage it.
The reason I'm doing this, is that my SD card has also died, and is no longer recognized by the phone, and I'm wanting to replace it.

Can't this help? :got this from android website: ((((( I have been fighting this issue for 6 months, off and on. Used to think it was the SD Cards, but have concluded its got to be software. I used different methods to fix it, but over trial and error I think I found the easiest way.
Reboot into Recovery, go to advanced options. Select to mount via USB, then connect to a pc. May take a few times plugging in and out, till you get the sd card drive to appear on your pc. Once you get it, back out of usb mount. Disconnect the cord, and verify your sd card is mounted. I just go into the install a zip from sd card option, if I see files/folders I know its mounted. back up and select the restart device.
This method I stumbled on, in my efforts to just try and get my phone back. After I made the mistake of formating everything includeing the boot, and other internal components. Was pure luck, but it works. I know now it wasn't the format of the SD Card nor the sd card itself, cause I have tried several. Also used to think it was the file system, cause I used to get the cards working again by formating and then pasteing saved files/folders from an earlier back up. Also have factoy reset many times, that doesn't fix it, and reflashing a ROM sometimes does appear to work, but I think its because of restucture of the file system during that process. Anyway let me know if this helped you.))))

Thanks for the suggestion. Unfortunately, it didn't help.
Got exactly the same problem.. and this is what I have found out so far
If you go to mnt folder using programs like root explorer or rom tool box you will notice 2 folder.. 1st called sdcard which is your internal card and sdcard2 which is the external card
under scard card there are some letters which indicate the permission level it has but under sdcard2 it only shows -----, I manually changed the permission for sdcard 2 (normally long click on the folder name and select permission from the menu) once I done that the external sdcard started to work fine, however when I reboot the phone the sdcard2 lose the permission again
Also, I contacted the guy who I bought the phone from (efit) who told me to open the phone and take the sdcard out and then put it in again and that should make it work, I managed to remove the screen off (not really sure but I think the 2 screws beside the lightning connector is for decoration only).. as you can see from the phone there is no way to access the sd card (unless I did something wrong here)
I contacted efit asking him for some instructions on how to open the phone but I couldn't find the sd card and now he is telling because I opened the phone myself I lost the warranty... what a scum bag !!!
tried the mount to usb thing but that didn't work..
hopefully will find a solution soon
Thanks for this, I almost opened my phone for nothing.
I went to a store to get it open but one of the screws would not come lose, so they didn't try further.
Stupid problem with SD, hope someone will find solution soon.
But you managed to get it working until reboot?
With my phone in mnt folder: sdcard has no permissions and sdcard2 has ---rwxr-x as permission.
What should I change there?
Thanks
ciao

Thanks
ciao

Do you have manuxo rom or pure ICS installed on the phone because I've noticed that with manuxo rom sdcard2 have no permission but with pure ICS sdcard is the one with no permission.. which I thought it's a bit strange
I have asked before in this forum if anyone with working sdcard to share what permission they have but no one answered !

I Installed the Manuxo rom v1.28, sd card problem happened week later.
I installed like viber, skype, whatsapp, facebook, soundcloud, simpsons tapped out, angry birds and all that stuff on phone, transferred to sd.
And just all of a sudden, when phone was lying there, it gave error, I rebooted and I lost everything..
But I can still see the fotos on sd card2 through file explorer. Weird stuff.
OK, let's wait for answers of other users I guess.
I also mailed to androidsale what to do, he said try to pull it out and try it a few times, maybe not good connected with sd slot pin, but I can't believe that because phone still finds SD in ROM TOOL lite.
Thanks for your time and effort in this problem!!

Hello, I have the same problem with my goophone i5 v88 I can't mount the sd card (16GB)
I have try to remove my screen but I have the same problem I can't found the sd card (just my sim card...)
Adb shell
you can connect the phone to pc and use adb available with mtk droid tools to force format the sdcard.
Adb shell
Fdisk (search google for how to use fdisk)
If the phone is rooted and has cwm you can format sdcard via cwm.

Thank you very much for the response!!
But I am a noob and don''t know how to do it all, first adb is installed and made available.
Then I installed mtk droid tools. It gives this in info :Free space: system- 251M; data- 153M; sdcard2- 1G; C:\ 75544M
But I don't know how to format now.
Do I have to enter a command in the adb terminal?
Do I have to combine Fdisk and adb shell?
I's not rooted cwm with me, its the chinese recovery from Mayiaandjay from youtube.
Many thanx for the help, almost was going to use it as a picture frame
I do not have access to my PC right now but...
On the right of MTK Droid Tools there are 3 buttons "Root" "ADB Terminal" "Reboot"
Root the phone by pressing "Root", and follow instructions...
Pres "ADB Terminal" to enter Windows command shell, type "adb shell" (without the quotes) to enter the phone shell. Next type fdisk then "enter" and see what comes up...
type "mount" also to find out where your sdcard mounted...
Then search with Google for how to format sdcard...

This is where I got.:
How can I mount or unmount the SD Card using ADB?
The sdcard can be umounted by using the umount command.
unmount /mtn/sdcard/.android_secure
how can it be remounted again :
mount /mnt/sdcard/.android_secure
.
Type mount sdcard next to the "#" sign & press enter...
You will need to know the mount point also if you intend to mount the external card.
As an example:
su mount -o bind /mnt/emmc /sdcard/external_sd
.....................
Like this? And I need to write sdcard2 instead of sdcard I guess?
or this:
First, on your phone, go into Home -> Settings -> SD card & phone storage, then click on "Unmount SD card"
Then, in your shell, do the following.
Code:
adb shell
mkfs.vfat /dev/block//vold/179:1
Then go back to the phone and mount the SD card again. Of course, it would probably be easier to just click "Format SD card," rather than going through adb.
.....
Difficult, don't want to brick my phone..
Many thanks
