I have decided to look at some of the home replacements instead of running senseUI. I have searched and read about aHome, OpenHome, GDE, DXTop, and PandaHome. After looking I realized that I don't use any of the HTC Widgets other than bookmarks so that is not a loss for me. In many of the posts about the replacements people mentioned lagginess on all of them except GDE. Most of those were older posts so I was wondering from those who are running the most current version of these replacements, do they still lag when moving from screen to screen. I also saw that PandaHome can use the themes and icons that were made for OpenHome or aHome. Can GDE do this as well?
GDE is still the best. It has been my everyday Home for about 1 month now and I have no complaints. I have tried Panda and aHome and and both did lag on my Hero. GDE on the other hand is just as quick as SenseUI if not faster.
I do not believe it is possible to use OpenHome or aHome themes with GDE. I just tried a couple and could not select them in GDE (maybe if they were in GDE directory, didn't try that..). There are many nice themes available for GDE though. My favorite is obsidian. Here is a modified version of obsidian I am running on my phone now (icons changed with bettercut).
Gde's the best,i think...been running it for a couple weeks now.runs smoooooth..n phone looks super slick..ill try gettin screen shots

thanks for recommending this, i LOVE this program. very lightweight and runs much smoother than sense and is easy on the battery.

How do i delete rosie?n how much of an improvement will i see?...hook it up with some infoooooo lol.thanks
theres no need to delete rosie. go to settings, applications, the find sense ui. click it and go to clear defaults i believe. then push home. now it will ask select what you want to use home or sense ui. check the box that says use this as my default and then press home. now you have cupcake home. then install whichever home app you want (i.e ahome GDE pandahome)
i did this and i hated it. even with themes i just hated the feel of the home. but hey its preference.
hope i helped
Right on...well when i installed gde.i set it as my default home...i got a task manager n dont see sense or rosie running,so i guess im good ?
well if you did all i said and set home as default you should be good. you would know if sense were running because its the UI. if you a little tab on the bottom of the screen and if you push home and no dialog comes up your set.
Aightyy..thanks
home++ but its only for 1.6+
I'm a big fan of Slidescreen, it's really simple and provides pretty much everything you want on one screen. It takes away the android feel though imho...
I was going to give you a link but I can't post links since i'm new but its slidescreenhome.com if you want to check it out.
Slidescreen is cool

As of now I just run the stock 1.6 home.

I modified the obsidian theme myself. It is a work in progress. It currently has a completely clear bottom bar (no fade to black) and updated action buttons on the bottom bar. I also changed the color of emerica6541's task bar from white to blue for a more seamless look. I plan to add more blue to GDE and its menus for a more complete look and feel. If I find the time I will also try to add some blue to some of the stock apk's...
Big thanks to emerica for the beautiful task bar and gZ for the original obsidian theme. I only tinker with this stuff and would never have the time/knowledge to pull this off on my own. Thanks to gbhil too... GDE runs incredible on Bare Gumbo 1.5c.
I had thought of trying Open Home but I will try the GDE first. Thanks for the input.
after running GDE for awhile i notice how much faster and smoother sense seems to run.
alright ill edit this post... after trying both gde and sense IMO gde looks better and the battery lasts longer. you basically just have to set gde as your default home and it runs really nice.
Update:
I have put one for OS 2.1 version. this one is with scrollbar, no customized screens yet. 800k looks very small.
------------------
hi all friends,
I have mod the original launcher little bit, to add a screen indicator, the source code version is 1.6.
how to install :
Code:
adb remount
adb push Launcher.apk /system/app/Launcher.apk
Hope you like it.
updated, change the indicator picture little bit.
if you want to change it, the images are under res\drawable-port and res\drawable-land
I put a 2.1 version in the attachment. with scrollbar instead of image .
thanks.
Looks cool
This is pretty cool, I have often wished Android came with this functionality by default.
I made some screenshots in case people want to see without pushing the apk. They're JPG so obviously it looks a little better on the phone.
Keep in mind this Launcher has 3 screens, so if you're coming from a 5-screen Launcher you'll have to re-organise your icons beforehand.

I wonder if it's possible to change either anderweb's or this one to be similar to the scroll bar on sense roms or espresso.

when i first saw AnderWeb's launcher, that's the first thing that i tried to do, but really haven't figured out something yet. The closest I came was the sense ui in my adw themed launcher2 thread. i do agree. Getting this will be awesome! Seems like we are slowly but surely gettin' donut to run like sense/2.0 without having to ever switch roms. All thanks to the great devs we have here on xda. Keep up the good work!
looks lots of people like sense ui.
Afaik, the sense scrolling thing is pretty much the same as nexus scrolling dots with a minor annoyance:
-if you do it graphically identical (following the circular pattern on the drawer 5ab) you are condemned to a fixed number of screens by design.
-if you want customizable screen number, it can be done the same way as Home++ does, with a bottom stright line (same way as the mod on this thread)
so users need to make the choice
It shouldn't be too hard to implement the sense bar, the rogers magic on cupcake has it. i myself hate the sense iu

I wouldn't mind sticking with a set number of homescreens. I myself have become accustomed to using just five homescreens and that alone. I think 5 is plenty, but I'm just one guy and other people have different desires and needs. I wouldn't mind seeing it put into action. I am very much a big fan of sense ui, if you haven't already noticed. lol

Summarize all friends' comment,
1, scroll bar would be better.
2, customized number of screen would be better.
After having the phone for a little over two weeks now, i think i am going to keep it. There are a few things in the software that irritate me, but overall it's a good phone.
1) I'm ready to give up on Kies. It is just not stable. It won't connect unless certain files are not on the Internal SD card and as best as i can determine, those files are generated by the Phone/Apps automatically. Even when it does connect (usually after formatting the SD card), it will randomly swap contacts' first and last names. It will also give me duplicate entries for people's birthdays in outlook Calendar.
2) The Camera on this phone does not seem to be as sharp at the 3.2MP camera on my Fuze. Its colour handling however seems to be superior. The auto White Balance actually corrects for tungsten lights fairly well. It would be nice if the volume buttons could be mapped as shutter buttons. I am also having trouble telling much difference when i set the exposure compensation. I also notice that you can't use exposure compensation and anti-shake at the same time and that is lame.
3) I tried ADW Launcher is it felt slower than TW... yes slower. Things like the phone dialer took longer to load and search. the main thing i liked about it was the sliding dock at the bottom and the ability to use the expose like preview screens. Just which is worked better. Not sure if i'll give Launcher Pro a try or not. Also, if i set ADW or Launcher Pro as my default launcher, how would i set it back w/o uninstalling?
Thanks,
4) tried a few twitter clients, but haven't found one nearly as good as pockettwit on Winmo. I loved the side swiping interface and how it would autofill the handles of people i follow when i type @and the first few letters.
Still love:
1) the screen... it is utterly beautiful
2) the call quality so far has been great
3) i'm getting more used to typing on a touch screen. I have found portrait mode is easier with swype and landscape the android keyboard
I haven't uninstalled KIES yet but will probably soon. Haven't discarded only because I wanted to try to the movie conversion engine and a few little extras. Handbrake does a very good job though.
I too have tried ADW launcer and wasn't impressed. I lost the 3d app drawer capability, which I do like. IF ADW supports it and someone care to share where the settings are, I would appreciate it.
Launcher pro gives me the ability to hide the apps that are not common or everyday use and the 3d app drawer. I have stuck with LP for the time being.
If you go into settings-applications-manage apps-and select ADW, the 4th section is the default one. Tap on clear defaults and next time you hit the home button, it will ask you which launcher to use and give you a default checkbox.
thanks for the reply. i think i might give Launcher Pro a try
You can also try home switcher. Lets you use multiple homes as well as multiple lp's, ect for a work, home, play type profile.
Sent from my AOSP on XDANDROID MSM using XDA App
I found that home switcher program, that should be useful in case i ever want to give Kies a try again. On the overall whole, i love Launcher Pro. It works great. I even paid the extra for the additional widgets.
Let me apologize in advance for this first post in this thread, I didn't want to create a bunch of separate threads for my opinion and experience with the G Tablet, and I didn't want a bunch of threads about my uses for the tablet and the apps I use. So instead, I'll first ask the original topic and then I'll give you some information about how I use the tablet and the widgets/apps/etc. that I use. Hopefully someone from Google will find this insightful, because I think my setup could be a great generic "spring board" for anyone who wanted to use this tablet for taking notes on images, and personalize it to their needs.
What are your favorite widgets?
Does anyone know of some widgets that do the following (screenshots are greatly appreciated as well!):
- I wouldn't mind a news reader that displayed more than just the first line of the news article and/or title. Currently I am using Express News, but it only does one line... it's better than the others I've tested, but it doesn't even automatically scroll the news. You have to tap left/right to make it change.
- Is there some weather widget that perhaps does 5 or 7 day forecasts ? I'm using Fancy Widgets right now, it says the temperature, the high and low, and the time. I dont really need the time, not a big deal since it already says it on the top right.
- I wouldn't mind a task management widget, a decent sized one would be nice.
Some other thoughts:
With the new G Tablet I got yesterday, I've quickly discovered the screen is quite HUGE (obviously). I have a Evo 4G, rooted since the day I got it, and I've got some favorite apps. But being a tablet, it has some different purposes that it works better at, than a phone.
For instance, as a bathroom reader, the tablet works great. The phone is kind of small, hard to read a lot at a time, constant scrolling, etc. The tablet also makes playing games like Slice It, a lot more fun.
I'm a web developer and manager of a small team, so sometimes it's nice to be able to take screenshots of a site we're working on and add arrows and notes to it - the best solution I've found that lets you load images and write on them and save it, is called "Pocket Sketchbook Pro" - and it switches to landscape mode automatically THANK GOD! Honestly, one of the main reasons I bought a tablet is because I wanted to be able to sketch things on a "near" paper sized display, and then immediately share it via Bluetooth to my computer or Email it or print it. My printer is a HP Officejet Pro 8500A Plus, my point in telling you that is because it has its own email address. If I email my printer, it will print the email & attachment I send it. Very useful when I'm out with a client and I want to print off my notes or mockups, etc. so that I have it waiting for me when I get back.
Forgot to mention that I'm using Toshiba Home Launcher, on my phone I use LauncherPro (paid version) and I love both. They've both got their benefits, Toshiba Launcher is just amazing on a tablet. Vegan 5.1 Beta.
One of my few complaints (other than many apps not switching to landscape mode..) is that when I'm holding the tablet in portrait mode, sometimes my screen will turn off. I guess the power button is receiving enough weight/pressure on it that it's going off. And then sometimes it will reboot on me when I go to wake it up! How annoying is that?! I know that I could just switch the tablet upside down.. but I should be able to hold it any way I want.
Oh, and the Rain-X idea was great. Definitely fewer finger prints and my fingers seem to glide across the screen now.
Also, Multi Picture Live Wallpaper is great.. I was getting tired of seeing the scrunched/weirdly resized wallpapers!
Lastly, Dolphin HD with a few addons = awesome. Web2PDF so I can email the PDF to my printer, Screen cropper which lets me save as an image so I can write notes on it with Pocket Sketchbook Pro, and the Blue Theme make it really awesome.
Weather Widget
Weather forecast widget is free, but the text is too crumped together and the 4x1 just doesn't look right.
Then I tried "weather widgets", but it kind of sucked.
Then I found out that Fancy Widget has a Pro version which does what I need for $1.99 - works great.
Task Widget
Taskos looked very promising, as it syncs with Google Tasks and offers a 4x4 widget on the home screen - something I was excited about. What killed my excitement was placing the widget on my home screen and finding out that - yeah it's 4x4 alright, with only 2x2 actually having any freaking content!! The rest of it was black! On the phone it looks correct, so this is definitely a tablet issue. That sucks hard.
So finally I found one that actually works, it's called Ultimate To-Do List, the licensed version is $5 and it syncs with ToodleDo which costs $14.95/yr and up (if you require subtasks like me).
I haven't done any digging yet on a good news widget. With almost 100 page views I'm surprised nobody has any widgets they recommend
Scrollable news widget and a home launcher that allows you to change the number of rows and columns on your screen. I have mine set to 10 columns and 7 rows and I can make my news widget as large as I want and it will fill the Widgets space
Oh and springpad is one of the best to do lists ever with a very nice expandable widget as well

LauncherPro lets you set your own # col/row and you can drag widgets to resize them on the screen, but I like the Toshiba launcher more because of the nice scrollable application list and they way they cleaned it up and put it at the bottom even though it's landscape mode - I love it. I can live with the defined # of cols/rows and screens, thats not a big deal. I know I'm limiting myself to just the widgets that exist that can take advantage of the tablet's size, but there has to be SOMETHING out there by now, right?

Hmm I will check that out, thanks
For weather related Widgets I recommend this app:
Palmary weather app. Tried to paste the appbrain link here but my GTab wont let me!
I hear a lot of people saying Sense is awesome. This is my first time using Sense.
My favorite part about it is the Weather animations. Is this the awesome part? Not being rude but am i not using Sense to its maximal potential?
Sense overall is the meaning!
Sense is 500mb of pure ****.
Clean android 2.3.4 is perfect for me.
But to be ontopic I think most people love the widgets. The email/friendstream/calendar etc.
Try it out and report back if you like it.
Sense is the best UI on Android IMO - stock Android is FAR too basic

i would like to know it too.cause i never had HTC phones and iam using SE phones
I thought I liked vanilla android till sense 3.0 , vanilla android is just that .....vanilla , sense overall IMO just looks better ,widgets etc...etc..,that's why we need s-off so we can make it fly , I don't think I'm ever going back to vanilla, I installed ADW on my sensation and instantly got depressed and took it off ...vanilla just sucks compared to sense 3.0 ,but its all android so its all good
I love that you can go from the lockscreen directly to certain apps
I'm loving all the widgets, the lock screens, the carousel, and all the other neat features.. I love Sense 3.0 better than any other UI!
I like it....but then again I am coming from Touch wiz...
I like the sexy weather animation on the lock screen, also the lock screen itself. Otherwise, I feels really chunky. For the average user it seems to be really user friendly, but I am far from an average user.
However, I am angry at HTC for removing some things from the last Sense
- Reply to text messages from web
- A differerent dock, the older Sense let you choose from a rounded design to a solid block.
It's how you configure and place widgets that makes the UI aesthetically awesome, Sense is merely offering you a starting point.
Sorry, but Sense is just too much razz-ma-tazz bull**** for me. I grew up with Sense on my Hero and when aosp (the dev) came out with his stock Froyo (and later Gingerbread) roms I initially thought they were just so bland, but I grew to really love the way ADW Launcher could be set up to instantly flick from one screen to the next. I really loved not having to wait even a fraction of a second to get to the next rock-steady screen, and I came to hate the way that Sense couldn't be set up to jump instantly to the next screen. And it still can't be set up to do that, and I still hate Sense because of that. And I hate it when I unlock the lockscreen then I have to wait for that stupid carousel to quit spinning. Jeeze, that **** is truly maddening. I didn't buy a smartphone so I could watch the goddamn carousel spinning around. That got old after about 2 minutes, and I REALLY resented that I couldn't deactivate it. My time is valuable to me, that's why I got a dual-core Adreno 220 1.2ghz machine. Sense doesn't do anything for me except waste my time. The second day I had this new phone I put ADW Launcher on it and I've been a happy camper ever since. I've got it set up so all I have to do is touch the flip-screen dots in the lower corners or give the screen a flick and BAM, instant screen change! Very satisfying!
Also, ADW lets me set up 5 rows of icons on each screen, which is perfect on the size screen we have now. Being limited to 4 rows just feels like an awful waste of screen space.
So now I've got a screaming machine all set up like I like it! The only thing I don't have yet is root!
ADW on top of Sense is nice. I do like some of the apks provided with Sense. The Launcher, however, is complete garbage lacking any kind of decent customization for better useability...aesthetics only.

Thanks. That's exactly what I was trying to say.
Sense is awesome because of the widgets and sleekness of it, the effects. also you get those htc apps that are pretty cool too. also the touch input HTC_IME is the best touch screen keyboard IMO.
What i find not so awesome is 7 home screens i wish you can change that. i only use 3 to 5. Sometimes it feels like over kill. Ram hog is a under statement
android with Sense is much more convinient than non-sense android..

So with a 1000 word essay on why you hate sense you go and buy a phone with the latest version of sense on it and then you come on a forum and bash it when you knew before you bought it you were going to hate it . People like you aggravate the **** out of me
Some extra things on Sense I like that isn't the widgets or animations. Pure functional things it brings to the table that I really like:
-Quiet Ring on pickup
-Pocket mode where it increases ringtone volume when in your pocket
-Flip the phone face down to activate speaker phone
-I like the Dialer but that's more cosmetics. I do like the dial by name function from the dialer.
-I won't use a ROM unless it has the power controls in the notification window and the newer Sense builds have this (Still prefer Cyanogenmod's implementation though).
-I know some people hate it but I like the facebook linking in the contacts
That's what I can think off of the top of my head. I don't use most of the widgets (I use Fancy Widget instead of the weather clock), though I do really like the people/contact widgets.
Sense 3.0 is way too bloated. HTC needs to take lessons from Samsung (YES, SAMSUNG) and dial it back about 10 notches.
Sense is awesome because:
1. Best phone dialer and contact management
2. Best integration with social networks
3. Best keyboard and amazing auto correction
4. Awesome notification bar with quick access to apps and system settings
5. Best UI for music player with easy streaming to any wireless or Bluetooth capable device
6. Best text selection and copy paste ability. Highlight a word or paragraph in the browser and it will give you a definition, translation, YouTube results, Wikipedia results and more.
7. By far the most useful and integrated widgets of any android UI. Sure there are replacements in the market but they don't work as well as the sense widgets
8. Best gallery app that let's you wirelessly print your pictures to your printer. Also let's you edit your pictures and add effects and it has auto enhance feature that works really well.
9. Awesome browser with great rss integration
10. It's pretty
