Let me apologize in advance for this first post in this thread, I didn't want to create a bunch of separate threads for my opinion and experience with the G Tablet, and I didn't want a bunch of threads about my uses for the tablet and the apps I use. So instead, I'll first ask the original topic and then I'll give you some information about how I use the tablet and the widgets/apps/etc. that I use. Hopefully someone from Google will find this insightful, because I think my setup could be a great generic "spring board" for anyone who wanted to use this tablet for taking notes on images, and personalize it to their needs.
What are your favorite widgets?
Does anyone know of some widgets that do the following (screenshots are greatly appreciated as well!):
- I wouldn't mind a news reader that displayed more than just the first line of the news article and/or title. Currently I am using Express News, but it only does one line... it's better than the others I've tested, but it doesn't even automatically scroll the news. You have to tap left/right to make it change.
- Is there some weather widget that perhaps does 5 or 7 day forecasts ? I'm using Fancy Widgets right now, it says the temperature, the high and low, and the time. I dont really need the time, not a big deal since it already says it on the top right.
- I wouldn't mind a task management widget, a decent sized one would be nice.
Some other thoughts:
With the new G Tablet I got yesterday, I've quickly discovered the screen is quite HUGE (obviously). I have a Evo 4G, rooted since the day I got it, and I've got some favorite apps. But being a tablet, it has some different purposes that it works better at, than a phone.
For instance, as a bathroom reader, the tablet works great. The phone is kind of small, hard to read a lot at a time, constant scrolling, etc. The tablet also makes playing games like Slice It, a lot more fun.
I'm a web developer and manager of a small team, so sometimes it's nice to be able to take screenshots of a site we're working on and add arrows and notes to it - the best solution I've found that lets you load images and write on them and save it, is called "Pocket Sketchbook Pro" - and it switches to landscape mode automatically THANK GOD! Honestly, one of the main reasons I bought a tablet is because I wanted to be able to sketch things on a "near" paper sized display, and then immediately share it via Bluetooth to my computer or Email it or print it. My printer is a HP Officejet Pro 8500A Plus, my point in telling you that is because it has its own email address. If I email my printer, it will print the email & attachment I send it. Very useful when I'm out with a client and I want to print off my notes or mockups, etc. so that I have it waiting for me when I get back.
Forgot to mention that I'm using Toshiba Home Launcher, on my phone I use LauncherPro (paid version) and I love both. They've both got their benefits, Toshiba Launcher is just amazing on a tablet. Vegan 5.1 Beta.
One of my few complaints (other than many apps not switching to landscape mode..) is that when I'm holding the tablet in portrait mode, sometimes my screen will turn off. I guess the power button is receiving enough weight/pressure on it that it's going off. And then sometimes it will reboot on me when I go to wake it up! How annoying is that?! I know that I could just switch the tablet upside down.. but I should be able to hold it any way I want.
Oh, and the Rain-X idea was great. Definitely fewer finger prints and my fingers seem to glide across the screen now.
Also, Multi Picture Live Wallpaper is great.. I was getting tired of seeing the scrunched/weirdly resized wallpapers!
Lastly, Dolphin HD with a few addons = awesome. Web2PDF so I can email the PDF to my printer, Screen cropper which lets me save as an image so I can write notes on it with Pocket Sketchbook Pro, and the Blue Theme make it really awesome.
Weather Widget
Weather forecast widget is free, but the text is too crumped together and the 4x1 just doesn't look right.
Then I tried "weather widgets", but it kind of sucked.
Then I found out that Fancy Widget has a Pro version which does what I need for $1.99 - works great.
Task Widget
Taskos looked very promising, as it syncs with Google Tasks and offers a 4x4 widget on the home screen - something I was excited about. What killed my excitement was placing the widget on my home screen and finding out that - yeah it's 4x4 alright, with only 2x2 actually having any freaking content!! The rest of it was black! On the phone it looks correct, so this is definitely a tablet issue. That sucks hard.
So finally I found one that actually works, it's called Ultimate To-Do List, the licensed version is $5 and it syncs with ToodleDo which costs $14.95/yr and up (if you require subtasks like me).
I haven't done any digging yet on a good news widget. With almost 100 page views I'm surprised nobody has any widgets they recommend
Scrollable news widget and a home launcher that allows you to change the number of rows and columns on your screen. I have mine set to 10 columns and 7 rows and I can make my news widget as large as I want and it will fill the Widgets space
Oh and springpad is one of the best to do lists ever with a very nice expandable widget as well

LauncherPro lets you set your own # col/row and you can drag widgets to resize them on the screen, but I like the Toshiba launcher more because of the nice scrollable application list and they way they cleaned it up and put it at the bottom even though it's landscape mode - I love it. I can live with the defined # of cols/rows and screens, thats not a big deal. I know I'm limiting myself to just the widgets that exist that can take advantage of the tablet's size, but there has to be SOMETHING out there by now, right?

Hmm I will check that out, thanks
For weather related Widgets I recommend this app:
Palmary weather app. Tried to paste the appbrain link here but my GTab wont let me!

I have found a weather application for the HD2 that far exceeds the Sense UI weather tab and/or Ageye G-Weather. It's called Touch Weather from MobilityFlow (http://www.touch-weather.com/download-cab/).
It gives you a seven days weather forecast with weather screens of morning/noon/evening and night. Swiping up or down changes the time of day. Swiping from right to left changes the day. It has lots of applicable settings and also shows you the humidity factor, the amount of rain/snow, the temperature of the rain, etc , etc, etc. All in all a beautiful weather app that has a trial version for 15 days of the Pro version. The costs aftere that time is ONLY $5!!

This app is already known and I think it's primarily aimed at people who don't have Sense UI on their phone. No need for an app when you already have all the info on your homescreen.
Still nice though.

I do not entirely agree with you on that. Touch Weather gives you far more information then Sense UI weather. You can swipe the screen up and down to see the forecasts from noon until night and from right to left to see an entire week. It als gives you the amount of rain that is to be exprected and the humidity facto and so on.
True, $5 is a bargain I have to say.

Second that, certainly compared to G-Weather which costs 9.99 Euro. And there is also a possibility to get Touch Weather for free by posting to them suggestions for optimization of the program, etc.
o man i love this program
when i last hard rest my HD2 i did not accept the weather settings so now i have a nice clean home tab, nice transparent taskbars etc etc and no weather
with this app i got an even better weather app in return without the homescreen polution
THANNNNKS for the tip
My main concern with this would be that two different weather services will often supply different weather forecasts. Dumb, I know, but it's true. So I'd have one set of weather conditions on my home page, on the clock, and a different one when I run that app.
It makes a lot more sense to only have 1 application, and unless you can tie this app into the home page then I won't be even vaguely interested.
For ppl in sweden and norway, the weatherforecasts by accuweather are pointless, they are incorrect - plain and simple. Accuweather also serves incorrect time-info so that I can see a moon at like 10am
So: Accuweather sucks.
I agree with johncmolyneux, I'm not really interested in any weatherapp as long as i cant pin it to the weatherservice in Sense. I did buy G-Weather though, for my other device (TD2) where I disabled Sense...
AFAIN, Sense UI weather uses AccuWeather. With Touch weather you can choose between AccuWeather, GisMeteo and Intellicast, so you will be able to make the settings of Touch Weather compatible with the Sense UI, though with a lot more options and information than SenseUI weather.

In that case, I'll give it a go then. Thanks
And with Co0kie's home tab, I can link the weather icon on the clock into this application and just get rid of the weather tab.
its nice
but users who have sense ui dont need that

the accuweather setting is only for the US because that's the popular database used there... and i must say, that's what works. Other servers i've seen in weather apps work terribly for the US. So what sucks for you doesn't suck for others
Besides, there are two other servers to choose from in touch weather settings. Have you tried those for Norway and Sweden?

Works fine for me when in Sweden...
It's nice but does anyone else thinks their sun looks weird or is it just me?
Hello, I use this program since its release and helped in the translation into Spanish, the truth is in continuous development and extension, it is true that the time varies greatly depending on the server, but this provided more servers and its optimization.
My personal opinon is that it is a great program.
Sorry for my bad English writing
the best weather for windows is this, it has everything, it use weather.com , huminty, hour by hour, what you need, and you have two sources to compare, pocket whether.... enjoy, is not free, but good things you have to pay for......

good luck!
After having the phone for a little over two weeks now, i think i am going to keep it. There are a few things in the software that irritate me, but overall it's a good phone.
1) I'm ready to give up on Kies. It is just not stable. It won't connect unless certain files are not on the Internal SD card and as best as i can determine, those files are generated by the Phone/Apps automatically. Even when it does connect (usually after formatting the SD card), it will randomly swap contacts' first and last names. It will also give me duplicate entries for people's birthdays in outlook Calendar.
2) The Camera on this phone does not seem to be as sharp at the 3.2MP camera on my Fuze. Its colour handling however seems to be superior. The auto White Balance actually corrects for tungsten lights fairly well. It would be nice if the volume buttons could be mapped as shutter buttons. I am also having trouble telling much difference when i set the exposure compensation. I also notice that you can't use exposure compensation and anti-shake at the same time and that is lame.
3) I tried ADW Launcher is it felt slower than TW... yes slower. Things like the phone dialer took longer to load and search. the main thing i liked about it was the sliding dock at the bottom and the ability to use the expose like preview screens. Just which is worked better. Not sure if i'll give Launcher Pro a try or not. Also, if i set ADW or Launcher Pro as my default launcher, how would i set it back w/o uninstalling?
Thanks,
4) tried a few twitter clients, but haven't found one nearly as good as pockettwit on Winmo. I loved the side swiping interface and how it would autofill the handles of people i follow when i type @and the first few letters.
Still love:
1) the screen... it is utterly beautiful
2) the call quality so far has been great
3) i'm getting more used to typing on a touch screen. I have found portrait mode is easier with swype and landscape the android keyboard
I haven't uninstalled KIES yet but will probably soon. Haven't discarded only because I wanted to try to the movie conversion engine and a few little extras. Handbrake does a very good job though.
I too have tried ADW launcer and wasn't impressed. I lost the 3d app drawer capability, which I do like. IF ADW supports it and someone care to share where the settings are, I would appreciate it.
Launcher pro gives me the ability to hide the apps that are not common or everyday use and the 3d app drawer. I have stuck with LP for the time being.
If you go into settings-applications-manage apps-and select ADW, the 4th section is the default one. Tap on clear defaults and next time you hit the home button, it will ask you which launcher to use and give you a default checkbox.
thanks for the reply. i think i might give Launcher Pro a try
You can also try home switcher. Lets you use multiple homes as well as multiple lp's, ect for a work, home, play type profile.
Sent from my AOSP on XDANDROID MSM using XDA App
I found that home switcher program, that should be useful in case i ever want to give Kies a try again. On the overall whole, i love Launcher Pro. It works great. I even paid the extra for the additional widgets.
I am thinking of installing an Android tablet into my car as a carpc. Android is not very vehicle (minimal attention) friendly so an app maybe a home screen type application could solve this.
I have an idea of what it could look like nothing to complex. I attached a mock up. The buttons on the right can be bigger or more of them and can be customizable (auto call text playlist) the volume on the right could be a stage up down (more clicks the louder long press for mute) or slider whichever. Perhaps digital OBD II gauges could be added as well if screen size is big enough.
Haptic feed back and definitive clicks sounds should be optional so you know you have hit a key.
The wall paper behind everything should be customizable maybe visualizer or album art users choice.
I think simple gesture could be implemented as well slide for new song up or down for voice activities (voice search or vlingo) I'd have no idea what to do on the programing side, but I could learn and help.
Any ideas or volunteers leave a comment if this is done I'll delete but I could not see such an app not that I knew what to search for. this could be quite popular in the CarPC forums if it has not been done before. Market wise ad supported with a one time payment pro version (2-5$) would probably have best sales. (I just want the app take the idea nothing expected here, except maybe I get it free ;-). I'll help test)
bump it up
Android Car Dock available in 2.2+
Its a stock app
Not quite what I'm looking for all that is is short cuts to non mobile friendly apps. It also doesn't look as seamless as a single solution would.
Try Desktop Visulizer, it can create as big icons as you want, selecting custom images.
A new home screen and widgets seem to be the best choice at this point. "Where I'm at" widget is great for the maps part and a volume up down widget works great for volume. I haven't found a reliable media mute widget tho. Just about any music player has a mobile friendly widget.
A voice command app that pauses music correctly would really help though lol.
I'm interested send me a pm with more info and ill look into it

it is possible to have a map view in the middle of the application but not a navigation view as it is not documented by the api and simple odb2 data is easy its just serial data but not being able to ingrate navigation posses a problem
I was talking to the developer of "Where I'm At" and he said he would look into it. Could an alternative GPS app be used or even a 2x1 widget with next turn direction. Sounds like the best bet would be a new app with everything built in already. That would take away from customization of different music apps unless an option was coded in.

Only if it was open source because most navigation apps are paid and it is against the terms of service to use

basically, i really hate the ICS photowidget. it cops images to a square so all the images i have setup for HC now get cut off. and it no longer matches the size of the gmail and other 3x3 widgets which ruins my setup.
so i'm wondering if anyone can port, or knows an app that has a photo widget like the HC one.
bit of a bump on this, been through the market these last few days looking at different ones.. but none are sticking at the moment and the ones that are are not that good..
I like to have a set of 4 framed pictures on one of the screens for presentations to clients.. so I can tap in to them and go in to the DIR to show them the work..
thus need a functional one that is plain Jane but does the job..
Hi all,
a few people have asked me why I like Freenote+ and why I think it's better than S Memo, or other note taking apps.
I made a video to try and show the features that are the most useful for me.
I haven't shown all of the features of Freenote+, there are a lot of other useful features like the To Do list, shortcuts for commonly entered text (like your email address) and the paint function.
I've found similar features in other note taking apps, but Freenote seems to get in the way less for me and allow me to get notes down the quickest.
I hope you find it useful if you are looking for an alternative to S Memo.

That looks superb, exactly what I was looking for.
Silly question, but is Freenote+ the same as Freenote? (Thats the only one showing up on the Google Play store for me)
I think they've just added the + to the paid version.
This is the free version
This is the paid version
I don't think there is any difference in functionality, except for the nag screen on the free version. Once I had decided how much I liked it and how much I used it, it was worth paying the few bucks to get rid of the nag screen and to support the developer.
hi richlum,
thanks for the video.
to be honest, i didnt watched it till the end since i'm im quite aware of the functionalities.
but one thing i havent found so far, is how i increase the font size. i'm on ics stunner with 240. and i think the font is too small for me.
Do you have any solution?
Preferences> Editor> Handwritten
You can set the size of the handwriting there.
I have mine set at 50.
Sent from my GT-N7000 using XDA
it doesn't support pressure sensitivity. and it's slow as hell. no use for me.
In Paint mode it is pressure sensitive. Press hard to get a think line, lightly to get a thing line.
But if your note taking involves a lot of drawing and artistic sketching (as opposed to just drawing some shapes and diagrams) there are a lot better drawing/sketching apps like Sketch Book Mobile and Infinite Painter.
But I don't do much drawing for my note taking.
And I'm not worried about the handwriting mode not being pressure sensitive.
Different people are going have different work flows. For me, Freenote is the quickest way I've found to get notes down without the interface getting in my way.
That's why we're lucky to have so much choice to be able to find what suits us best.
When i add it to my home screen as a widget, the words look blurry, what size did u set ur widget as and font scale? Thx!
My handwritten font size is 50.
I just inserted the largest widget and then resized it in ADW (I have mys screen setup to be a 10x10 grid).
Typed text looks clear than handwritten text on the widget for me, but it's still easily readable.

Hi ... I noticed a difference that adds to the beauty of this application :
If you use the big widget of it on the home screen , In freenote+ , you can toggle between pages right from the home screen .. while in the free version you can't ...
But in both versions , you can perform all other functions shown on the home screen "Except for editing" .
