Easy Update ? - Touch Cruise Android Development

Hello all,
I've been using android for a while now, running haret, and I get more and more convinced to remove my Windows Mobile to flash android on the NAND.
I'm daily looking at the froyo for vogue thread, but before flashing, I have some question in order to good understand :
- the current froyo thread has about 1 new release per day, how do you guys update the rom without loosing all your parameters and apps ? Or do you reinstall and re-set everything ? I don't want to do this every day ...
- will there be a tutorial, or can somebody put me here some explanations, to install froyo to nan. Cause I don't get everything with the nbh, the install ... what should got where, how to install, what is the utility, in what order to do everything ?
Thanks in advance.

For backup you can use titanium backup (now included in latest froyo) and you can simply follow superjvm guide.

Thanks l1qu1d, I think I'll try it this evening, since my current warm donnut is completly corrupted after trying to update google maps app ...
So, I will be forced to re-install everything ...
Do I also need to install the latest "radio" for the polaris.
And again, could someone just briefly explain me what is this nbh that dzo is alwais updating, I think it has a link with the zImage i'm using for haret, but I'm not sure ... I just would like to understand.

Th nbh file is the flashable version of kernel+bootloader+initrd. It's for nand install but it doesn't contain the whole sistem.

Can I dump my touch with all installed programs, cooking a complete rom including installed programs?
No - that's not possible I Think.
But you can use sprite backup.
It worked perfectly for me when I flashed the ROM back.
But keep in mind that it only will work correctly on the same language of the ROMs.

I have Sprite Backup, but after flashing the device with the same rom, the restore didn't work, so I had to install the programs again.

Here is a trick I have used for quite some times with Sprite Backup 5.1
Sprite Backup version 5.1, version 6.02 is more fancy, 5.1 is good enough.
1. Do a full backup, make sure option Create Self Extract Exec
2. Hard reset (optional)
3. Flash new ROM
4. Run the backup file, make sure the Upgrade Mode Restore Option is Check.
5. Kneel down and pray (optional, or take a cup of coffee).
SKtools is handy.
Step 4 is most important. When it asks you for the upgrade fine, Click None. Minor cleanup unavoidable but heck a lot better than of re-install all the softwares.
Sometimes you may find the machine run slugglish by doing that. I am not sure why.
You may flash the new ROM, re-install all the softwares, see if the machine run faster, but few days later, you will feel it run slugglish. I am not sure why. (The laptop runs runs much faster than once I bought it and take it home and installed with applications.)
So I just keep buying new machines... hahaha
holy moly.
going great at 10% of flashing.
but i feel confident the tute was on the spot.
muchos gracias.
And yes you are right (you didn't say it but you must have thought it), I could have added it myself to WIKI. But just had to try it myself first off course.
And am i right in believing i could have allready replaced some of the graphical files in the dumped "ROM" directory?
Or is it to dangerous at this change because the file size needs to fit?

Thanks for this tutorial.
Now i can safely backup my Dutch rom and test some custom ****..

Do NOT change files in the dump directory without proper tools!!!
You will mess up the ROM
When you have a look at the dump directory there are some info files with data for the places in the ROM which need to be recalculated.

Dumping Elf WM6 Italian version ROM
Before trying to put new Rom images, i would like to backup the original one.
I followed the (simply) tutorial, but i'm confused about this step:
"need the ruu_signed.nbh from valid update (extract with winrar)"
Which file do I need?
I don't understand why I need a valid ROM when I'm trying to dump a Rom from my Elf
Can I use an other language ROM version (English, Dutch....) or is needed only an Italian one?
Thx in adv and sorry for my poor english

you need this as a "shell" or "template" because the .nbh files are made in a way that cannot be recontructed (so far I understand - correct me if I'm wrong).
And yes you can use an ROM with another language. I took the Australian ROM - look at the first paragraph "files you need"
This is usually a .exe file that you can extract with winrar (or winzip maybe)
P.S.: your english is not so bad

Don't upload to XDA. I've seen some directories with full roms on FTP. But this is no longer allowed and files will be deleted.
XDA's allready been in trouble with MS about this. So either use third party file sharing or privatly owned FTP.
r0p3..
So to get the radio and SPL do i need to redo first extraction but then for these files? Or are these IPL/SPL?

I don't know yet - I still have to dig in the wiki about that.
It's very dangerous in this area - if you mess up IPL or SPL your baby is usually lost forever. I don't mind about those as long pof's USPL works beautiful.
Radio might be not so critical. But 2.97. is already available - so it would only be for the fun of it

Is removing or upgrading a program included in a ROM possible?

Hi,
I have a tmobile wing flashed with touch-it 2.3. The JAVA midlet manager is part of the ROM, it is an old version and I would to install a newer version. My question is, if I install a newer version will the installation be similar as an upgrade on a desktop computer or will I have 2 different versions (I am not sure it this would cause some interaction problems that is why I have tried this yet)
Or Is there any way to remove a application included in a ROM?
Thanks!
not sure about the upgrade part .. i assume the program will auto know that a newer version is being installed and will remov old ver.
as far as removing from rom, by my knowledge, the only way to do that is by extracting the rom usind the kitchen for that rom and recompiling it with stuff u want .. for this however u need to hav chef permission and kitchen
I am new with the whole cooking/flashing world, so I am not sure about the cooking thing. I will have to read about this. I guess I will have to try the upgrade thing.
Well, I tried and instead of upgrading the existing the older version of the application I have 2. This is a bit annoying since I have to install it on my already very limited internal memory. Is there ANY way to go around this, either by actually writing over the older version or removing it?
Help please!

Best ROM for my Hero?

Hi guys,
am new to this whole rooting/ROM updating thing.
Would appreciate if someone could guide me to a good ROM for my HERO (currently running stock 1.5)...its an Eastern/Central European version (i.e. has language for Czech, Hungary, Poland etc) and has no market place.
Basically the ROM I am looking for should:
Give market ability
Android 2.1
Fast to use
Give a better/more practical contacts selection option...i.e. the fastest way to select contacts (bypassing having to go through multiple screens!)
Be generally cool and not make me want to buy a new android phone for the next few month!
would also appreciate instructions (or link to) for how to update the ROM.
thanks!
Raidroid seems happiest on my hero from the handful I tried so far
-------------------------------------
Sent via the XDA Tapatalk App
do you have a link where I can get it from (including instructions)?
thanks
I installed Fresh 2.1.2 a few days ago and am loving it! Looks slick and is fast.
I think in terms of speed, any of the 2.1 roms are great when the hero is overclocked (OC).
I had been using BeHero 1.2+ before the OC patch came out and it was occasionaly sluggish but after I applied the OC patch it is perfect now. LAGLESS
what i really need are links where i can download these things from...from whatever i've found, it seems to be through rapidshare.com which doesn't work...
Latest raidroid is here: http://www.multiupload.com/C54GAT6DLJ
thanks! finally found a site from your link that lets me d/load
Glad to be of assistance, is what we're all here for after all
Whatever ROM you install, I recommend that you install SpellDial to search for your contacts (it is free).
It gives you a T9-style search of your contacts. Type in the name on its telephone keypad and the you will usually get your contact listed within 3 to 4 key presses.
SenseUI already does this.

hello again
now that I finally downloaded this, I don't know how to install it!...
I have an unbranded Hero (i.e. not locked to any network)... do I still need to root my phone first etc?
where can I get instructions on how to install the ROM?
many thanks!

yup...you need root access to install ROMs. Google Search on how to unlock your version of the HERO. Good Luck!
What he said.
Google 'how to root HTC hero'
Basically:
allow 3rd party installs, dl and copy the Rom zipfile, flash backup/loading tool and the recovery image to SD, install the tool, run it, backup, then flash the recovery bin to the phone, power off, power back on holding home and power until the green on black text recovery screen comes up, wipe all, then flash from SD and select the raidroid zip
Will take a few mins to flash and reboot, reboot will take a bit longer than usual but that's it in a nutshell.
Good luck ...
ok.. so the day started off with trying to root my hero with the 'one click' unlocker...
finally d/loaded the program, ran it but it somehow couldn't find my android phone (on Win 7)...
wasted a couple of hours on above, then tried it on a WinXP machine... found phone no problem, ran the one-click unlocker and got an error while trying to 'update' (i.e. downgrade ROM)...
so then thought I'd give the 'goldcard method' a go...
followed instructions to the letter...got as far as trying to write the image on the SD card till when I pressed save (on the hex editor) and it gave me a 'cyclic redundancy error'...
not sure what the heck that means!... don't know whether it had anything to do with me not formatting the SD card when sticking it in my PC since WinXP said it needed to be formatted....
however, the instructions didn't say anything about formatting it!... tried to re-insert it and format it but don't get the format option this time....
SD card works fine in phone...
Don't know whether its to do with brand of SD card not being compatible with the 'goldcard' method (San Disk)... read that Kingston works... can't be asked with all the hassle and going out to buy a different one etc etc...
Hoping that a new ROM is released by HTC officially, soon!

Help needed ASAP to recover from messed up phone!

Hi!
First off, if I have posted in the wrong place, I am sorry and if necessary please move to relevant location!
Right, I have had a major problem with my HTC Desire, I spent all day & night yesterday trying to fix!
I rebooted the device as it was running short of memory, then phone just got stuck on the white HTC boot screen & wouldnt move from that, so I restored a backup of the phone using Nandroid, but I had the same result, fine I thought, Id just download a RUU to reflash the device, this didnt work and came up with errors, BUT what I did manage to do is take the rom.zip and make a new ROM in Cygwin which flashed perfectly and I ended up with a stock 2.2 and all seemed to be back to normal, so I then tried to restore a backup again, but same problem, white HTC screen so I have came to the conclusion that I will have to TRY to re-create my old ROM & settings using this stock ROM!
So far I have managed to root the ROM & add everything that my old ROM had (was using the latest Lee Droid ROM - man big respect to you for what you do!!) but there are a few things missing which I do not know about and this is where I need all your help with!
Below are the bits I desperately need including with the ROM (my phone wont install any other ROMS other than the stock 2.2 I said earlier) I am not expecting the members here to do it all for me, BUT if you could point me in the right direction to either the posts with directions for what I need or other places where I can find the bits & how to do it!
*** Wireless N support (my router is N & so are the other wireless devices)
*** An overclocked kernel (such as Lee Droid's V2.2e_A2SD ROM)
*** The ability to wake up & unlock the phone with the optical thumb trackpad
*** The reboot option when long press on unlock button (ideally the nice, clear menu that includes Hibernate from the new HD ROMS)
*** Branding & naming the ROM (as Lee Droid does on his ROMS)
*** Custom wallpapers instead of stock wallpapers
I am sorry for the long post, but I really NEED this completed ASAP and I know with all your help, I can do it!
Also, I am making a simple program on my PC to custom ROMS (add & delete apps, alarms, ringtones & notifications etc) which I will upload for the community when it has been completed & working 100%!
Thanks in advance & I hope that you can find it in your hearts to help me!
Arty
I don't think nandroid restores the kernel. After you do a restore with it, you need to flash a kernel that is compatible with the rom being restored.
Personally, when I restore I backup on my phone, I reinstall the rom and then just restore /data from my nandroid backup.
Thanks for your fast reply DiGi760, however I think you misunderstand!
I need a kernel that supports overclocking the CPU as I use SetCPU and so far its just the standard 998MHZ I can set the clock to, where I would like it to be higher, like 1038MHZ or whatever it is
Your backup copy is broken. You can't "really" recover from this. Just reflash 2.2 and update it to whatever you had before and start over. You may be able to manually pull stuff from your SD card where the nandroid backup was written to but that would be a tedious amount of work.
Thanks Syn Ack, why would the backup AND the info on my phone corrupt at the same time?
I do actually have a copy of the Clockwork folder from memory card stored onto my PC, but none of the backups will restore (I have a total of 10 going back a few months) but none will restore, not even any other ROMS that Ive downloaded with ROM Manager or from forums will install to it, only the 2.2 ROM that came with the RUU file I downloaded.
An update on my progress of making my new ROM:
I have managed to get the Reboot menu integrated into my ROM, so now I am just stuck on the following:
Wireless N support
Overclocked Kernel
Unlock the phone with trackpad
Branding & naming
Custom wallpapers
so if anybody can help me I'd really appreciate it!
Wow, its been over a week and no replies, why cant anybody see it in themselves to help? after all, you all was newbies once too, just remember how you felt when nobody answered a post you *REALLY* needed help with!!!
Just saying
Gees thanks for nothing u lot!!!!

[ROM][Updated 10/02/11] Higgsy_Modded_3.4.2_GB_Froyo_RC2

Update 10/02/11:
For existing users of the ROM, flash the 2.2GB_NoCG_31_39.sbf (Link below). This will flash the rest of the ROM apart from the part that stops the ROM from being downgradable and system - Don't worry your ROM will be as it was before after flashing - you won't loose any data.
##CAN PEOPLE POST WHETHER THEY ARE HAVING GTALK/MARKET ISSUES PLEASE## Please also post if it is working ok for you
Back up after needing to sort out a few niggles and an issue with the rom including my Titanium backup license key. Now RC2.
Higgsy Modded 3.4.2 GB Froyo for Motorola Defy.
Fully working, no niggles ROM. Everything works. Its a blank canvas, All social networking blur stuff removed, some widgets, some other stuff.
Included:
Launcher Pro
Milestone Overclock
Titanium Backup
Widgetsoid2
Clockworkmod Recovery
Es File Explorer
Also:
Deodexed
Rooted/Busbox (Busybox installed in /system)
Over clock Script included with following freq/vsel 1000/52, 600/36, 300/26. (milestone overclock is not loaded as default - just go in and load module and set to apply on boot then forget about it)
Install process - this must be followed to the last letter - there is no variation so please don't ask.
If you have already followed the process to get onto a downgradable base, (i.e. you already flashed RC1, or, you followed the other thread Here then all you need to do is boot into clockworkmod, wipe data/cache and restore this. It will wipe everything again, sorry about that.
I never flashed a non downgradable .sbf before, such as 2.51 Eclair, or the GB/US Froyo, so can't vouch for whether it will work correctly on peoples devices that have done that, you should however just be able to flash the system/image if you've already got a 3.4.2 froyo base. If you have never either recieved the phone/flashed one of the undowngradable .sbfs, this process will ensure you keep you downgradibility.
Files Needed to complete This:
2.2 Chinese .sbf(Unzip the .sbf from the archive)
Higgsy_Modded_3.4.2_GB_Froyo_RC2 (Unzip and put folder in the sdcard/goapkrev/backup folder)
Superoneclick Root
Clockworkmod Recovery
2.2GB_NoGG_31_39.sbf(Unzip the .sbf from the archive)
1)Make a backup of all your apps with Titanium backup on your current ROM.
2)Boot into Stock recovery (Power On/Vol Down, then press bottom right hand corner of the screen when you see the warning sign) Then perform a data wipe.
3)Using RSD Lite flash the 2.2 Chinese ROM (Guide Here if you need it!)
4)Once the phone has rebooted, skip set up, root via superoneclick and then install clockworkmod recovery/apply.
5)Boot into Clockworkmod Recovery and wipe data/cache
6)Now got to backup/restore and restore the Higgsy_Modded_3.4.2_GB_Froyo.
6)Important! Once the restore is complete pull the battery, as you are reconnecting the battery hold volume up, so that it goes straight into bootloader.
7)Once in bootloader flash the 2.2GB_NoCG_31_39.sbf by RSD Lite
8)Once the above is completed it should reboot and you are done
PLEASE READ:
I don't recommend restoring settings via titanium backup, only apps/app data, in the past I have done this and found it problematic. I suggest to redo your settings manually.
If you want to use setvsel (as it now works fine with froyo) you need to remove the setscaling scripts I put in for overclock and also milestone overclock. Setscaling scripts are located: /system/xbin/setscaling.sh + /system/etc/install-recovery.sh
If you report a bug I need to know what roms /things you have flashed before, there are too many variables, most notably if you been on non downgradable roms
Enjoy!!!
Thanks go to:
Sorensiim - Hosting all my files
mcm_xyz - for the haptics fix
Bizzaboy - for info on updating media profiles, so improving video recording
Authors of all the apps included in here, donate or buy the full versions they are worth it!
Further updates I intend to release as update.zip's, looking at themes, bugfixes (even though there aren't any that I can find) etc etc...... Please don't pester me for these, I do it as a hobby and sometimes don't have time for days to do things.
Change log:
03/02/11
RC2 release
Removed my TI Backup license that I had inadvertently included
Removed various info from the data.img, that I believe could have been cuasing some of the niggly issues people were having.
01/02/11

Hey higgsy, i didn't flash your ROM yet but i have a question
At the moment I have a Defy which is on 2.34, and I didn't upgrade yet because i NEED a downgradable ROM (for warranty reasons, the DE version is still at 2.21)
now thanks to your tutorial, i can upgrade to froyo while being able to downgrade to the official 2.21 if needed, but here's my question:
what happens if i nand restore a different ROM based on the 3.42 UK rom (like HandlerExploit's upcoming Vanilla version), will I still be able to downgrade?
(e.g. does restoring a backup WITHOUT flashing a new sbf make your device undowngradable?)

Its flashing the sbf what locks you out of being undowngradable. simply restoring a system and/or data partition should not cause an issue. Ask the authors of the other ROMs, I can't comment on what effect there releases will have on your phone.

Screens are pointless mate, its a blank canvas there is no theming etc. the screens in my 2.2 CN thread are pretty much the same
Looks nice,
so far running very smooth every thing ive tested and works well as far as i can tell!!
although I cannot got into recovery just get a black screen
Overall very nice cheers!!
Duh! I just flashed the uk rom posted by iaio72. I just realize it is not deodexed and i *must* (must?) replace that statusbar. If i understand correctly, it is not possible to theme odexed roms, right? Do you think i can just flash your system image or may this raise some issues ?
Higgsy, first of all thanks you very much for this rom, but I have a "little" problem. With a clean nandroid and with your, I have problems with gmail notification and "google talk connection problem" (don't know how is exactly writen, I have in another language)
what can be?
Edit: Just say: "Google Talk failed to login. If this is a google Apps account, confirm that Chat service is enabled for this account."

Just a blind guess: you did disable usb debugging before booting into recovery, right? This is mandatory for froyo (don't know why though).
Another, market is not the new.
Edit: Now is up to date, it just didn't want to update, or install app. Removed data and restarted. Somebody know something about the other issue?
If I already followed the safe upgrade to 3.4.2, it should be good enough to simply do a nandroid restore and flash devtree again, right? I so want to get rid of blur
Camera not working!
Everything run smooth but the camera is not working.
if i'm already on 2.51 (it came stock), how do I go about flashing this froyo release?
Can anyone help? thanks.
Hi, Thanks for the good work
I've the same problem with Talk, authentification problem...
I've another problem with the LED from camera doesn't work.
Any idea?
gratias mate, for your work.
I had the blur-UK ROM installed, so I was able to restore your system.img only. Non of my data got lost and it's running smooth on your deblured version
