Somebody with GARMINFone get the APK ?? - Droid Incredible Themes and Apps

I would love to see someone with the new T-Mobile Garminfone pull out the apk and see if we can use it in our Incredibles. I would just love to see how it would work on a real powerhouse of a phone ;-)

Thanks for sharing =)

So anything you rip off another phone is illegal, how come we do it with alot of stuff on here... then again what do i care /ripriprip

The problem with this is that it's the map data mostly. When I was on Windows Mobile, we had the same problem with Microsoft Voice Command. Even though it came with most WM phones, you weren't aloud to share the .cab (equivalent to .apk) file for it. In fact, cooking roms with it was kinda frowned upon. The problem was the licensing, because Microsoft actually charged for the app, for the few phones that came without it (the manufacturer had the option to use it, I'm guessing they decided to just pay for it to have it come loaded). Even when TomTom came out with a "trial" for one specific WM phone, the cracked program wasn't allowed on XDA, even though cracking it just made it possible to use it on other phones...... You still had to buy the maps from TomTom for the phone..... It's all just a CYOA policy, and it's what makes sure XDA won't be shut down!

So I guess the question is: if I am able to find the.apk, would it work on my inc. Has there been any success stories?

It would certainly be interesting to find out. I remember someone in the past had made a GPS Phone based off Windows Mobile. I can't remember who offhand, but I'd think it would be more profitable for them to release the software for a reasonable price than to offer it only on their phone, which who knows how much they're really making off it. I mean it comes down to profit, but I'd think that considering my DInc came with built in Nav for free, and is a much better phone, why pay a premium for a phone with GPS, when you can get a better *phone* and add GPS software for a minimal cost (or use the FREE one included!). Just my thoughts though.....

Creating Windows Mobile 6 ROMs

Hello,
I wanted to ask is it legal to create WM6 ROMs for the HTC Wizard . Thnx in advance .
We are not CREATING ROMS, we are EDITING them to our needs and specifications.. for instance u dont like something that comes in the rom, or u want to add something to the rom (thus saving u space, for storage and Program) you just EDIt the rom.... by using the kitchens and packages.. hope i have answered your question

Sorry but still my questions remains but a changed a bit now, IS EDITING ROMS TO OUR NEEDS ILLEGAL? Thnx to funkadesi.
i would say this with some certainty, but maybe a senior member can correct me:
to edit a ROM to your own specifications and put on your device for your own personal use is not illegal, as long as the method by which the original rom was obtained was not illegal.
to edit a ROM and redistribute it to others likely crosses a legal line.
Why Does It Matter???
I'm curious why it matters so much. Fact is, for the Wizard, we would not and never will have a true WM6...and frankly, I could care less if I have a cooked rom, especially since my rom is better than what I would get from Tmo...who also will not provide any updates. So if I am to be held to pay for a new device for hundreds of dollars to have a WM6 rom, or use one of XDA's talented chef/developer's rom's...well hands down, I will stick with xda. If that makes me illegal, screw it. I refuse to use the crappy stock Tmo WM5 rom that came on my device...it is slow and buggy and needed daily rebooting. The only time my phone gets a reboot now is when I have to do it for a program install or uninstall. My beloved Jaguar is so dependably stable...I will never go back to a stock rom!!
I honestly do not know the ethics/morality behind cooking a rom, and really don't care either!! All I know is that XDA has given more to the "Wizarding" community than M$, Tmo, AT&T or any of those other greedy bastards ever have or ever will. I sleep just fine at night despite my use of NTS's rom.
Tell me this...let's say you bought a designer suit, but it didn't quite fit right...would tailoring it to your needs be in some violation? You bought the suit, you need it to fit you, so you modify to do so.
I bought the MDA. Someone somewhere also bought a device with WM6...it got tailored to my needs. Not point by point the same thing as my suit example, but since M$ refuses to produce a WM6 for a my device, why should I be punished and forced to buy a different device when my Wizard works so well?? Why buy another suit to wear when you can simply get the one you have tailored to fit you?

See, now more info is coming out from you. You are not wondering if it is illegal...you are wondering if posting a cooked rom on YOUR WEBSITE illegal. That would be something for the mods to answer...
I do not know the legality behind it, but XDA developers share their rom's here. Now I think if you tried to SELL a cooked rom, you could definately end up in some legal issues.
basically it doesn't really matter if it's illegal or not, it's nothing that will ever come back to you...
picture this...a cop jumps out of his car and is on fire, and you pee on him to put the fire out...yeah, you pee'd on a cop, but you also saved his life. lol, that probably proved nothing, but i found it kind of funny. basically it may be illegal it may not be, but nothing will ever come of it, so i wouldn't even ponder on it too much
All I'd say is that you make sure the rom you post is your work...because if you post another cook's rom without their permission or without giving them the credit, you will most probably have a pissed off XDA developer on your ass...and I'd think that could be worse than any BS legal threats that M$ will probably never do!!!

XDA-Dev used to store the roms right here on this website. Due to pressure from cell companies (as I understand it), Microsoft used legal threats to force xda-dev to remove all the roms (that was almost a year ago, and many felt that would kill this site). Thats why you mostly have to deal with getting them via rapidshare or whatever.
The Eula says WM is not to be modified or redistibuted.
I do know that some people from htc, Microsoft and AT&T watch this site and actually love the work that goes on here (Others definetly don't feel the same).

^^^Well at least that is my view on the subject!^^^
Here's the bottom line, when you get down to it.
You kill a resource like this, a lot of Wizard owners will buy a Nokia.
Then Microsoft and HTC never sell that person another device/OS on a mobile platform.
That's kind of a problem for them. Unlike the desktop PC where you pretty much have to run Windows for a lot of purposes, on the mobile side there is no particular need to use a HTC device or Windows Mobile - there ARE other, competing alternatives that in fact have majority market share.
The carriers "efforts" in this regard are beyond lame and border on stupid. The instability in most of the stock ROMs are nutty bad and there is no "retail" upgrade option available (that is, unlike my home PC, for which I CAN go buy Vista, the option doesn't exist for my HTC Wizard)
Here's an ineresting article that has a Microsoftie recommending using some rom tools to pull out products like rdp for various reasons
msmobiles article

Scott Yost from Windows Mobile division of Microsoft USA, who specializes there in code signing, security policies, revocation and certificates, admits:

grow up, its not about being a "tattle tail" its about keeping this forum alive and problem free, to help develop xda devices. Creating problems via copy right issues is not the way to go for this great forum. Finding web sites with illegal software is very easy, but this web site is not about that, so relax!! and learn to spell.
Does igo8 use different maps then the previous version?

First of all he isnt tattling... this post wasnt even reported, but us mods and admins do read these forums as well... Second of all he was letting the OP know that posting warez or links to warez site's is prohibited. XDA does not support warez nor condone the use of them.

Actually the agencies DO care - that's why the Hermes Forum had to remove a lot of the shipped rom downloads to prevent the site being closed, chefs have to re-cook their roms to remove non-freeware apps etc, etc.
We all know people use the warez sites, but to keep THIS forum open we have rules which we must follow. If you don't like it or want to get mouthy that's your choice, but you'll end up being banned or no one helping you when you have problems.
I merely stated that the new igo works well and looks great, the site i linked to is not a warez site as there is no programs to download from that site Please remove my post if you feel that strongly about it.
Also i don't care if it is illegal or not i will try out a program before i buy it. Otherwise i would have thrown out over a grand on **** navigation software like navigon, route66 and so on
Don't visit the site if you don't agree!!!!!
Also i would like you all to know that TomTom sold over 40 times because of my recommendation and so will igo8 once their poi's have more coverage and once their traffic updates can be received through data connection.
XDA-developers is a great website to say the least and i would never consciously jeopardize their operation i do not feel that the link i posted pointed towards a warezsite especially since a simple google search pulls up that very same site and google has tried their utmost to keep from displaying such sites (officially)
I personally strongly believe that if you are going to use a software title (no matter pc, pda or elsewhere) you should buy it as a lot of hard working people rely on the income!
However this beeing said in todays market there is too much crap software floating around and there is no way of getting your money back for software you don't want to or can't use so we have to let each other know what works and what doesn't and IGO8 works as opposed to all other navigation programs except TomTom which is all i really wanted to say here!

Yeh Garmin mobile XT runs really well, no problems at all. Its the maps that do it for me, they are just so much more beautiful than tomtoms, and the POIs are massive, its got my local pub in there!!

After a significant testrun it is well buggy with missed phonecalls during navigation and sound lost and trouble exiting.
Once again proves the point of trying before buying
Hopefully the full release will cure these issues because it is fantastic piece of software!

New Home Screen Alternatives

I checked the first 3 pages of the forums and didn't see this posted.
Here are some upcoming home replacements for Android. One name that should be familiar to us old WinMo users and a "newcomer."
http://www.tat.se/home/
http://www.spbsoftwarehouse.com/pre...gs-support-for-symbian-and-android-along.html
they both look pretty cool but I think tathome looks like it might be a little more to my liking.
SPB isnt out yet, is tathome available yet, i didnt see a download.
+1 for TAT home it looks like it could be NICE I checked out the video (good music and all ;-)) here: http://www.engadget.com/2010/02/15/tat-home-the-gesture-powered-3d-home-screen-your-android-device/
I used SPB Mobile Shell 3.x with my Touch Pro and I wasn't too impressed.
*** EDIT ***
Here is a video of Mobile Shell http://pocketnow.com/tech-news/mwc-video-spb-mobile-shell-50-on-android IMO Mobile Shell is suffering from what it always has LAG!!!!! Even on the N1 it looked slow, maybe because it's BETA.

Yes there are a lot of different spec'd Android phones out there but I think he is referencing the fact that Android apps are easier to "warez" than the apps on other OS's. All you have to do is sign up for the paid app extract the .apk post it somewhere. Also any dev can try to "reverse engineer" the app, change a few components and BAM it's on the Market as their "original" creation. Just my .2 cents

that is correct. when swype was first leaked I was actually talking to them about the bennifits of releasing it through the market instead of through manufacturers and one of the biggest concerns that was brought up was the fact that security for apps is too lax. now dont get me wrong everyone knows that for every security mesure there is always a way around it but android security just sucks thats why for the most part people afften have a free version and a donate version. if people can try it and like it then they are more likely to buy it rather than just pirate it. setcpu is a perfect example of this. sure the dev could have made it a protected app (but being a member here at xda he probably knew it was pointless) but he offers it free here and then if you like you can buy from the market to donate to help keep him developing.
so basically all im saying is...ok we all (me included) have pirated apps but if you like the app make sure to go buy it from the market and help keep these people developing for us.
I know I went off on a rant there but without intrest in app development this great platform will fail.
I might be the only here without pirated apps then haha. I did have CoPilot once, but I didn't like it much so I got rid of it. The only time I ever use something pirated is to try it. If I like it and feel the developer should get credit, then fine, I'll donate/buy it.

It seems by your theme that you're still using WM6.1. You may want to update to a 6.5 ROM.
I'm just preparing to swith into Android. I'm pised off with that WM crap... ;/
Moved as not Software release.
I had been using it mainly for local searching, movie times, and gas prices.
And yes I am still rocking an old WM6 ROM on a Kaiser.
But still, why just stop supporting it all together? That's pretty disloyal to the same people who have been loyal to them.

BING app stopped from working
Hello Sean D,
I have encountered the same problem with the Bing app running on my at&t TILT. Have you gotten any more feedback, how to correct this problem? Like I mentioned, I'm running a TILT w/WM v6.1 and I'm really not in any mood to go thru the 'possible' upgrade to v6.5. I'm not a graet fan of bing, but the mobile app was perfect for getting info when quickly needed. I will not run the browser version.
