Google voice - Nexus One Themes and Apps

Now that Google has opened the flood gates to the US is anybody working on a widget that will display the number of new voicemails? Or is there one available somewhere I'm just not aware of?

The stock apk displays the number in the notifications bar, but that's not a bad idea.

Yeah there are 2 apps for gmail, SMS unread and gmail unread or something like that. I use SMS unread because it does text, missed call, as well as gmail.

please help with sms notifications and gallery

HI Everyone,
i am so new to the andriod system, and coming from my nokia my life is rather difficult atm. I am after 2 things 1 x when i recive an sms i always have to drag the the notification bar down to get the sms, is there an app that when i get an sms or miss a call it syncs with my led notification and pops up on my screen so i just need to tap it away i go to see the missed call or sms?
and 2 is there an app to replace that stupid mediascape ? so i can view my galleries of movies and pictures better ? that mediascape is so crappy it drives me up the wall.
i have unbrabded X10a
firmware 1.6 Build number R2BA026 rooted phone that i managed to do yesterday. thanks for the help in advanced.
For your sms try downloading handcent sms from the market.
I haven't found a gallery app that gives me photos AND videos but if you wanted something better looking for photos try just pictures app also from the market.

HI thanks for the relply angie i will look into those apps.
I am ok with the mediascape, with the upgrade of Android 2.1, the speed for the mediascape should be improved.

If you don't want to install an entire sms program like handcent you can download sms popup from the market. You'll still use the default sms app(which i think is pretty nice) but it will give you a popup that you can reply/close/delete directly from.

Push notifications?

How come android doesnt have push notifications? i believe gmail is the only application that has push notifications, theres no setting for the refresh frequency so i assume its push, but what about official twitter, facebook, hotmail?
It depends on what you consider push notifications. If you consider them notifications that appear in a box right on your screen then only system programs can do that. If you just mean notification that appear in the notification bar any app can access that.

In a box right on the screen? you mean ala iphone? no thats no im talking about, for example if someone comments on my facebook wall the notification gets instantly delivered to my phone in the notification bar, the same with emails, not having to wait for a refresh time , 30 or 40 minutes
I'm just freaking out !! I searched everywhere for some explanation, I want my twitter dont receive instant tweets like the one for Iphone. I tested all the apps , the twicca has the fast refresh time (3 minutes ).
Somebody knows how to do it instant or an app that do it ? (for twitter )

[Q] Asus Email Widget for GMail?

Is there any way to get the Asus email widget to open GMail instead of the stock Email app?

Menu in the top right hand of the screen (in the email app)
Click account settings
Add Account is in the top right hand corner.
Make it your default. If you have another email account setup, you may want to delete it. The widget will tell you the total unread emails across all accounts setup.

Already done that
I'd like to know if there's a way to make it so that tapping the widget brings you to the GMail app instead though
The stock email app isn't quite as good as GMail
@slient
I have the same question/problem
I think that's impossible because Google is blocking every connection with Gmail app. No app on the market can connect to Gmail! Even ASUS is not allowed to create an app that works hand-in-hand with Gmail... sadly...

Well, technically, the desired effect can be achieved by checking for unread mail the way it is now but tap action should just open the different app.

Ah my bad, I misread the OP.
Out of curiosity what features do you want the gmail app for? The only real difference I saw was priority inbox/starred mails support. I don't use that often enough myself to worry about it.

GMail handles labels better and has a bigger viewing panel
also the default email app doesn't string conversations together
Not impossible, launcher pro has gmail widgets that I use everyday on OG EVO and 3D EVO

SMS Sounds per Contact

I have a Verizon GS3 - I used to use GO SMS for well SMS. Now I like the stock messaging app but the only thing I am missing is the different notification sounds for different contacts. While I'm driving I tend to ignore the texts unless it's from my wife who has a specific tone I used for SMS. Is there something out there that JUST does this? MEaning I don't want to install Go SMS and I don't want SMS messages popping up
any clues?
You can use GoSMS and disable the pop ups.

I prefer the stock messaging app. Isn't there something that just does per contact sound

I am in the same boat and would love this feature. I came over from an iPhone (Sorry Apple your too slow at rolling out a LTE device) and you could assign contacts their own SMS tones. Android needs this too. For now once they fix Light Flow I think that will be my second best option. I can at least assign a LED light color to a few things but it's not working currently on the VZ GS3 version.

I use "Ringo" from the market. Works great, and easy to use.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.electricpocket.ringo
P.S. If you use this app, don't forget to set the default notification sound in the SMS app to "silent". Ringo will do the rest.

(Q) Am I the only one here wondering about.....messaging??

Sorry if this was discussed but I think I just went through the last hundred threads on here, and when I 'search' for hangouts it gives me zero results
So onto my question; am I the only one mad and annoyed that there is no dedicated text messaging app? The only way to text someone new is to go to people> scroll to prison> click their name> click the text message icon....? Really?
Because when clicking the '+' button in 'hangouts' it only opens a new "hangout", and as I learned yesterday hangout and sms isn't the same, after someone texted me back saying "did you just send me something? "..
Why do they have to make such a simple a decades old thing so complicated and dumb?

You're doing it wrong...
Press the + in hangouts. Start typing a name, number, etc. Matches will drop down and choose the one that has the SMS icon.

Moving SMS/MMS app from AOSP 4.3 is the best way, I guess
I don't find it complicated at all in fact it pretty simple.
I don't need to go to people app to text someone new, I can do it straight from hangouts. I just click the "+" and then pick my contact and right from that screen without any extra steps i can select either SMS or hangout as the new conversation type.

+1
Replace Hangouts with 8sms which looks like the good, old SMS app from AOSP:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.thinkleft.eightyeightsms.mms
Don't forget to define 8sms as "default sms app" in settings and you're done. For me, this is much better than using Hangouts...

all you need to do is open hangouts, click the + button, then if you want to call Phil, type PHIL.
you'll see phil's mobile number, his work number, his home number, and you'll see his hangout email address.
click on the one you want to send him a message through....... that's it........ that's not too hard.
Thanks guys that's a lot better, I even hate the hangouts icon looks more like a iPhone icon than a text.
On a sidenote.. damn, clean android is very boring and NOT customizable at all. I need aokp asap.

I personally prefer chomp sms (they're working on updating it for 4.4) but their other texting app, textra has been updated and I'm liking it quite a lot actually.
Give it a try. It doesn't have the most customizations but probably more than 8sms. It's not bloated like go sms or handcent

Thanks, I tried it but I really dislike the icons and especially in the notification bar.

Yeah I agree with you. I don't like how it defaults to using chat instead of texting. A lot of people at work have iphones, so I need to actually text them, not use hangouts. It isn't too big of a deal, but it takes an extra step to select "SMS" instead of in 4.3, just typing their name.
