SMS Sounds per Contact - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S III

I have a Verizon GS3 - I used to use GO SMS for well SMS. Now I like the stock messaging app but the only thing I am missing is the different notification sounds for different contacts. While I'm driving I tend to ignore the texts unless it's from my wife who has a specific tone I used for SMS. Is there something out there that JUST does this? MEaning I don't want to install Go SMS and I don't want SMS messages popping up
any clues?

You can use GoSMS and disable the pop ups.

I am in the same boat and would love this feature. I came over from an iPhone (Sorry Apple your too slow at rolling out a LTE device) and you could assign contacts their own SMS tones. Android needs this too. For now once they fix Light Flow I think that will be my second best option. I can at least assign a LED light color to a few things but it's not working currently on the VZ GS3 version.

I use "Ringo" from the market. Works great, and easy to use.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.electricpocket.ringo
P.S. If you use this app, don't forget to set the default notification sound in the SMS app to "silent". Ringo will do the rest.

Previewing Texts

Early apologies if this is in the wrong section but i couldnt find anything when i tried searching this topic.
Anyway, my old htc phones (windows mobile), the screen would turn on and i would get a preview of a text i just received.
on the inspire, the screen remains off even though the notification noises and vibrations play.
is there any way to make the screen turn on as well ?
it drives me nutts that i cant just glance at my phone!! i have to turn it on then do the unlocking, etc.
any help is much appreciated!
I don't know about the stock HTC SMS app but there's an option for this in GoSMS. I highly recommended it.
Or you can try sms popup.

+1 - Great app!
Handcent has screen wake option. And it by far is better than stock messaging app anyway, a billion options to use.

Can't get into handset, it just looks too ugly - even with the skins.
They need to update handcrnt for higher resolution/larger displays.

Handcent, second to none for SMS!
thanks a lot guys!
i will definitely try out the apps you've mentioned.
umm?
im loving go sms pro. very clean interface.
however, i accidentally deleted some text messages.
and i dont see a deleted items folder.
is there any way to recover deleted texts??
another vote for handcent here..
Go SMS Pro seems pretty promising thus far. I hated Handcent because of the overall 'old' feel and sluggish performance. Go SMS was a little laggy but I bumped the performance down to the "middle" level and it seems to work quite well now.

If you didn't use the backup that Go SMS offers I don't think you can get them back. Maybe they're hidden somewhere but I wouldn't know how to go about finding them.
If you don't want to change messaging apps, you might want to look at SMSawake or SMS Screen WakeUp.
I'm using Chomp SMS. Let's you preview text and lot's of other options.

[Q] What messaging app do you guys use?

Just curious, I'm a heavy texter and the stock messaging doesn't really work for me. I downloaded Handcent, and it seems to do the job fine. But what messaging apps do you guys use?
And is there a way to download the stock vanilla Android messaging apk found on Nexus Ones, G2's etc?
I'm using stock right now, works OK for me although I haven't really explorer too many other apps. When I first got my infuse I used chomps sms which is just like bites for iphone. Quick reply and compose are the 2 things I really like.

Only other alternative to stock I've tried is go SMS pro. Its pretty good but as a preference I run stock with the android keyboard.

Been using handcent since i started using android... U can customize jus abt everything, including each specific txt thread, to ur liking. The main feature i use it for, however, is the ability to lock the txt messages (both handcent & stock) it so has the quick reply which is cool...
message from Sams inFuse... GINGERBREAD *****ES!!!!
I'm also using chomp SMS. I came from iPhone and had bitesms installed. Chomp is made by the same company as bite, so a lot of the features are similar. Quick reply and compose are my favorites. The lock screen notification isn't as good as bite for iphone, but its tolerable.

Handcent is pretty good but I went back to using the default messaging app. Just a lot less laggy imo.

Same here. Havent tried any others. Got used to "bite" on the iphone and so gave chomp a try. Always big on the custom text tones for specific contacts. Sure its not the only one with it. But i was used to it so went with it.
I tried of them out last night and ended up deleting all of them. The resolution of the apps were all terrible and did not look good on this super amoled plus screen. Sorry but that bugged me lol.

I use GO SMS Pro
I have try Stock, Chomp, Go SMS Pro, and Handcent. Go SMS Pro by far the best looking and best working SMS application IMO. For those using Handcent check out Go SMS Pro almost the same editing wise but slicker looking.
I use Go SMS Pro and love it. Didn't care for Chomp SMS as much as I did BiteSMS on iPhone.
I'm also using Go SMS Pro. The only downside is if you receive multiple images in a single message, they just show on a single page and you can't save them for Gallery viewing (at least as far as I can tell, lol). In that specific scenario, I switch over to the default Messaging app.
Haven't tried any other apps. The one feature I really like about Go SMS is the Private message box, not sure if that is available in other apps. You can also schedule messages, kind of neat for "texting in sick" early in the AM before the boss-man is awake (and can reply)
Go SMS does not appear to be able to show texts on the lock screen, but I always disabled that feature in iOS so not a concern for me.

Text message incoming call reject

I have a vibrant and my wife has the g2x, she really wants the option to reject a call with a predefined text message like my vibrant can. Is there an app or rom that can successfully accomplish this on the g2x ?

Try extreme call blocker.
Block all unwanted calls, secure private text messages, ensure privacy. This app is now fully compatible with Android 2.3 (Gingerbread), with pickup-hangup feature. *** LG phone users, if the blocked calls are answered but not hangup, please enable "LG mode" option in "Application Configuration".
Not free, been using it for a week works great.

You can on MIUI ROMs. Instead of sliding down to answer you slide up to reject.

GO SMS has this feature, although I haven't tried it out. Its a free app and is MUCH better than the stock messaging app.
In the app go to Menu > Settings > Services > Auto Reply. Then you're given a settings window that includes 3 pre-defined auto reply messages. Press directly on the text of one of the messages and it will give you options to change the message; change whether it's sent after a missed/rejected call, an incoming text, or both; and there are other options too. Like I said I haven't tried, but I've used GO SMS for quite some time and its a very reliable app so I'd be surprised if it doesn't work.
+1 on miui.us
Just checked and it has the option you want but it involves rooting and flashing a custom rom, guess your best bet would be the apps mentioned above.
I already flashed a custom rom on her phone so that's not a problem. The problem would be her not being very accepting of an entirely new UI and bugs. I'll give them apps a try. I installed handcent sms on it I'll see if it has an option.

Just tested it with GO SMS and it works beautifully. If Handcent doesn't have it definitely give GO SMS a try. I actually used Handcent before and I like GO better.

Love Handcent
I like the quick reply pop up of handcent, I'll try chomp n go too
Stock doesn't lag at all when scrolling with pictures. I tried to keep using it, but there were some annoying things. The text box was too big to start with. For some reason it was delaying text messages or not sending them correctly.
THe fact that INSIDE the bubble it displays the other person's name, kinda bothers me. The fact that there is no quick reply was a turn off. Although you could download sms pop up, I found that the communication between both programs was not the best.
Go is super, but... its REALLY over crowded. Too many options and extremely easy to hit the button you do not wish when in a rush. Other than that, its great. I liked specially from this one that you had the call button on the top of the contact and you do NOT have to hit 3 taps to call anyone from the app (Pic-Call-confirm).
THe one I am using is CHOMP. It's the one that most resembles the iPhone and bitesms (same makers). Its being updated CONSTANTLY. So it's the most promising. You can one click call the contact through the quick reply. The only thing I miss from Chomp that go has is the call short cut in the message thread. Its light and its fast.

(Q) Am I the only one here wondering about.....messaging??

Sorry if this was discussed but I think I just went through the last hundred threads on here, and when I 'search' for hangouts it gives me zero results
So onto my question; am I the only one mad and annoyed that there is no dedicated text messaging app? The only way to text someone new is to go to people> scroll to prison> click their name> click the text message icon....? Really?
Because when clicking the '+' button in 'hangouts' it only opens a new "hangout", and as I learned yesterday hangout and sms isn't the same, after someone texted me back saying "did you just send me something? "..
Why do they have to make such a simple a decades old thing so complicated and dumb?
Sent from my Nexus 5 using xda app-developers app
You're doing it wrong...
Press the + in hangouts. Start typing a name, number, etc. Matches will drop down and choose the one that has the SMS icon.

Moving SMS/MMS app from AOSP 4.3 is the best way, I guess
I don't find it complicated at all in fact it pretty simple.
I don't need to go to people app to text someone new, I can do it straight from hangouts. I just click the "+" and then pick my contact and right from that screen without any extra steps i can select either SMS or hangout as the new conversation type.

Replace Hangouts with 8sms which looks like the good, old SMS app from AOSP:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.thinkleft.eightyeightsms.mms
Don't forget to define 8sms as "default sms app" in settings and you're done. For me, this is much better than using Hangouts...

all you need to do is open hangouts, click the + button, then if you want to call Phil, type PHIL.
you'll see phil's mobile number, his work number, his home number, and you'll see his hangout email address.
click on the one you want to send him a message through....... that's it........ that's not too hard.
Thanks guys that's a lot better, I even hate the hangouts icon looks more like a iPhone icon than a text.
On a sidenote.. damn, clean android is very boring and NOT customizable at all. I need aokp asap.

I personally prefer chomp sms (they're working on updating it for 4.4) but their other texting app, textra has been updated and I'm liking it quite a lot actually.
Give it a try. It doesn't have the most customizations but probably more than 8sms. It's not bloated like go sms or handcent

Yeah I agree with you. I don't like how it defaults to using chat instead of texting. A lot of people at work have iphones, so I need to actually text them, not use hangouts. It isn't too big of a deal, but it takes an extra step to select "SMS" instead of in 4.3, just typing their name.
