How come android doesnt have push notifications? i believe gmail is the only application that has push notifications, theres no setting for the refresh frequency so i assume its push, but what about official twitter, facebook, hotmail?
It depends on what you consider push notifications. If you consider them notifications that appear in a box right on your screen then only system programs can do that. If you just mean notification that appear in the notification bar any app can access that.

In a box right on the screen? you mean ala iphone? no thats no im talking about, for example if someone comments on my facebook wall the notification gets instantly delivered to my phone in the notification bar, the same with emails, not having to wait for a refresh time , 30 or 40 minutes
I'm just freaking out !! I searched everywhere for some explanation, I want my twitter dont receive instant tweets like the one for Iphone. I tested all the apps , the twicca has the fast refresh time (3 minutes ).
Somebody knows how to do it instant or an app that do it ? (for twitter )

So I lent my friend my inspire 4g yesterday so he could check his facebook. He was using the regular facebook app (other than htc sense, i don't have any other facebook type apps installed). He showed me the phone to check out a status, and up in the notification bar there was a notication icon that looked like the icon on the notification bar on facebook's homepage. So I pulled it down and lo and behold it said "John Doe has commented on your status"! When I got my phone back I signed in, but i haven't gotten any notifications. Anyone have any luck?

when you open your facebook app, go to the page where it shows you all of the icons (news feed, profile, friends, etc). go to settings and check to see if you have notifications selected (with messages, friend requests, and event invites selected underneath)

Yeah i've known that for forever, but I'm talking about actual push notifications that alerted you whenever someone commented on your status or a status you've already commented on, similar to the facebook iphone app

IS there any app or a mod that will allow me to get a none intrusive pop up when I get a message or something? Kinda like how it in iOS 5?
I have having to stop my game, and go into the menu only to see I have a message from someone I wouldn't of bothered checking in the first place?
Usually I am playing a game, and my phone vibrates but without a way of knowing if its worth my time checking or not, I have to press the menu key, and then reload the game. In the case of Order & Chaos, having to resign into the account is a pain.

You might wanna check out Popup Notifier Lite and Popup Notifier Pro in market. Let's you decide what popup notifications you get (sms, email, gmail, calendar, missed calls) works extremely well. Even the Lite version does the job nicely
I use handcent for that exact reason... You can even allow the popup to overlay your lockscreen. This allows quick responses without unlocking the phone.

Isn't the iOS 5 notification style the way Android has been doing it for years?
if I'm playing a game, I drop down the notification bar and see a portion of the message and from who it was... if I'm not bothered, I just flip the notification bar back up and continue gaming.. I never leave the app that I'm in.. in case of full screen games putting them no pause or pressing the menu key will show the notification bar if they're coded correctly.
the last thing I want is a popup appearing in the middle of the screen when I'm gaming (or whatever I'm doing on the phone actually), just my 2 cts.

Well I play Order and Chaos, and for some reason whenever I press the menu key, check the message app, upon loading O&C back, it freezes, and I have to manually remove the task,
This is true, but when we get a notification, it doesn't have a pop up like iOS 5. In the sense that, playing O&C it just plays the ringtone, and sometimes not even that. I have to go check the notification light.
I don't play, so the pop up doesn't bother me at all

Sweep Texting allows users to receive, view, and send text messages, all without touching their phones. It uses the proximity sensor to implement intuitive gestures: you can sweep down your screen as though you're giving permission for the app to "come" to you and display itself. An alert dialog will then pop up with the text message and you can reply to it within the dialog itself (you don't have to switch out of the app you're currently using). Then, when you want to send the message, you simply sweep up as though you're commanding the text message to "go away" and send itself.
Since the app is completely touch-free (with the exception of typing in your actual message), it is extremely useful in hands-free situations where looking at the screen and switching through multiple screens to access messages may be a hazard (driving, for instance). The app also gives users a nice futuristic feel to their text messaging experience and allows them to customize it with multiple color schemes.
FULL LIST OF FEATURES:
--Sweep down to view a text message after it arrives.
--Sweep up to send your reply back to whoever you're texting.
--Tap on your message to go directly to your Inbox.
--Supports multiple messages from different senders.
--Supports messages longer than one text message.
--Hide a message and then sweep down to view it again at a later time.
--Choose between Holo styled (ICS only) or five different dialog colors.
--Choose between five different text balloon colors.
--Toggle to disable in Landscape mode.
--Toggle to enable/disable "Message Sent" sound.
--Enable/Disable toggle so you can turn off the app's features when you don't need it.

UPDATE: More color schemes added! Check it out!

Unfortunately, the app is only available in the United States for now (due to export tax law issues). I'll be rolling the app out to other countries soon, though!
Really like this app though sadly it doesn't work with 3rd party messaging apps specifically sliding messaging (what I'm using) only seems to work with stock :-\
also can't reopen text a after dismissing..

Yeah, I could only find Intents that work with the stock messaging app when a text comes in. I'm actually working on porting it over with Google Voice and other 3rd party messaging apps are on my to-do list. I'll let you know when the updates become available.
And "Dismiss" is supposed to mark a message as read (so you won't be able to access it). If you want to be able to access a message after you view it, you should use the "Hide" button (that's what it's for). Glad you like the app though!

Are you using one of the custom color schemes? I don't think they have support for the "Hide" button (I couldn't get the dialog to accept more than one button for some weird reason... prolly an SDK bug). Try using the Holo theme. You can see from my screenshots that there actually is a "Hide" button for the Holo theme. Hope this helps!
Also, if you like the app, please consider sharing it with your friends/leaving a rating and review on Google Play. That'll help support future development of this app. Thanks!

I don't think activities can be shown on the lockscreen. The text message dialogs are individual activities so I don't think I can place them on the lockscreen. If I do find a way though, I'll implement that into the app. Thanks for the tip!

k cool, i would also like to pint out that if you are using a alt messaging app that has an option to wake upon receiveing a text enabled the app works fine, though if it wakes to the lockscreen and is in your pocket at the time you receive a text then this app wont respond to any sweeping after unlocking until you receive another text (unless of course the same scenario happens at which case you'd have to open the text normally) now if there is a way for it to ignore all sweeping over the sensor while at lockscreen then this would be fixed but as im not an app dev idk what you can and cant do, maybe something to look into maybe a waste of time idk, just the only thing that i can think of that would provide a nice work around

That sounds like a good plan. I'm looking into implementing that right now.
Also, the price of the app has been reduced by 25% ($1.50). It has also been released in most European Union countries, so if you weren't able to download it before because of country limitations, you can get it now (as long as you're in the EU)!

Also just found that under certain situations sweep texting may keep the proximity sensor on even if there are no more texts but a user workaround is to freeze the app with titanium backup or rom toolbox(what I use) or the like and then to unfreeze it will see if I can figure out what causes it or get log for you

Hi everyone ,
This is my first time here so hopefully I can get some help.
Every time I turn on my tab I get app pop ups on my home screen and also automatically apps are saving to my pages, I've gone through my settings and checked to see if I have anything turned on that shouldn't be, if someone could point me in the right direction would be greatly appreciated as it's really starting to annoy me.
Cheers Headman

It's a rogue app the causes that. It contains adware and spyware by changing your homepage (monitor what you search), constantly adds search icon on homescreen and comes up with annoying ads in both the notification bar and by pop ups.
Run this app:

And remove those apps.

Agreed, my fiance had one in her phone and it would push notifications, pop-ups, all sorts of invasive stuff. I wanna say she used an app "installer" ( like the ones found in 4shared), which was what installed the "rouge" app.

Hi Guys,
Huaewi's messaging app is really bad and not customizable at all. I look for only 1 feature in a messaging app and I.e. An option to delete sms from the pop up itself. This saves me the trouble of opening the sms manually and lon pressing it to delete.
This exact feature is there in Go SMS pro but it proves to be a battery hog more than often and I tend to delete it every time I install it.
I tried and I couldn't find any other app which gives a pop on the screen and has the option to delete in embedded.
I would really appreciate if someone could point me in the right direction.

Evolve SMS is capable of deleting messages from popup window, but when you're in conversation, you cannot jump back to overview all messages that's really annoy me a lot.
