Hey, I need some advice on which card to get;
I like having loads of space, but I also want a card capable of recording p720 video and run apps from SD in a decent manner.
So what card should I go for; 16GB class10 kingston or a 32GB class2 Sandisk?
They are about the same price.

I'd say go for the class 10 16Gb.
In my TP2 I have an 8Gb class 6 and read write speeds are wayyyy faster then my class 2 4Gb. A class 10 would be great for taking pics and videos without lag.

True, but do you really need a min transfer speed of 10MB/s to store those pictures and videos? AFAIK, a picture taken using the Desire camera is approximately 1MB...
Just some food for thought.
how about hd recording? whats the transfer speed?
the Class 10 16GB wins hands down, try using class 2 in android 2.2, your phone will slow down so much its annoying when loading large apps from sd

You don't "need" it, but you will notice a HUGE difference in the speed of taking and saving the pictures and videos.

Get 32gb class 2 from SanDisk without question.
I have a SanDisk class 2 16GB microsd card. Here are the benchmarks:
Code:
Sequential Read : 17.914 MB/s
Sequential Write : 9.358 MB/s
Random Read 512KB : 17.922 MB/s
Random Write 512KB : 2.131 MB/s
Writing an image or 720p video is (more or less) sequential, so You can expect to have around 9MB/s which is more than enough. Class 2 means writing speed in worst case scenario is minimum 2 MB/s.

Do you have any tests/benchmarks that would show this? I, personally do not believe this since random read speed = sequential read speed = ~18MB/s.
Class 10 microsd card has about 23MB/s read speed. That is not much different from Class 2.
Besides, how big would an app need to be to notice the difference between 18MB/s and 23MB/s ????
Just found another benchmark of class 10 kingston:
CrystalDiskMark
The benchmark runs the test in Seq read/write, 512k read/write, 4k read/write.
In the 4GB Class 4 test, we can see a Read of 20MB/s and a write a 7.16MB/s. That is pretty good for a Class 4 card. When it comes to smaller blocks of 512K and 4K, the performance dips in the writing to 2.9MB/s and 0.039MB/s. Reading 512K is still at 20MBps.
[...]
With the 16GB Class 10 card, we can see that sequential read is 19.8MB/s which is almost consistent with the 4GB card at 20MB/s. With 4K block, the read is slightly slower at 3.2MB/s. A check on the write, we can see the sequential writing seems to be almost 2 times faster than using a 4GB card. It writes at 12.45MB/s. Writing 512k and 4K blocks are slower though. It proves that Class 10 card can write with a minimum of 10MB/s sequentially.

any chance you could do a benchmark with the speed tester app on the market to see if the speed is the same on the phone?
http://www.appbrain.com/app/br.com.fast4ward.sdcardspeedtester
My phone is currently in the service for warranty repairs. I can check it as soon as I get it back.
If it turns out slower on the phone, that would mean the phone is a performance bottleneck - proving class 10 cards even more pointless on Desire.
Seems the best bang for buck would be the 32gig one then judging by the very little difference in transfer speed!
Think I might look into one myself seen as though the desire has now become the replacement for my ipod video.

that's my thinking behind it, no point getting a fast card if the phone is a bottleneck.
i've only got a slow card so cant confirm one way or the other, except i dont get any slowdown i notice with apps2sd.
on the phone my PNY class 2 16gb card:
3 MB/s write
14 MB/s read
on my laptop (with H2testw1.4) Clicky
3.95 MB/s write
14.8 MB/s read
not much difference for me, i still had apps running on the phone and using the tester via apps2sd - so probably about the same.
EDIT: just tested it again after a rebootiing the phone, 4MB/s write & 15MB/s read so mine is class 4 speed on the phone and my laptop.

How did you get such reading i ran the application on mine and only got write speeds and reading speeds it also seems to always be .0, does it round up or down?
I did three runs and results were around Write 10.0MBs, Read 19.0MBs give and take a MB (results being the highest). I also get ClassUnknown on 2/3 of the tests!. The slowest was 8MB Write and Read 17MB which now i look at it doesnt seem to be that fast.
I did same tests on a 32GB Class 2 Sandisk and the results were the same compared to my class 10!!! cluster sizing is whatever windows 7 defaults them too, cards cleaned, not sure if its worth doing the tests again but with used space on SD?
I tried the same tests on 8GB Kingston / Sandisk 8GB Ultra Class 6, Class 4/2 are Kingston and Sandisk, both produce same results.
Class 6 and Write 7.0MBs, Read 14.0MBs,
Class 4 and Write 7.0MBs, Read 12.0MBs,
Class 2 Write 6.0MBs, Read 12.0MBs
I have not tried to benchmark these SD cards out of the phone onyl using that app but from looking at the app test results there seems to be so little gain for such big spend.
Reviving an old thread.. but i have two questions:
1- Are 16gb class10 cards even compatible with HTC Desire? There is no clear indication on this anywhere.. atleast to my info
2- Any class10 user here who can vouch for the difference in speed? Is spending 100$ really worth switching from a Class4 card??
Thanx in advance
I had a class six card vs a class two that was larger with my HD two. And when running an app, such as Igo navigation which all the files were on the SD card I could tell that the bootup was faster. If you are just using a card for storage and not using it to run important things then go with the cheaper one.
Class 10, this is the first time I heard this standard. How fast it can run ?
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
With an aligned partition you can get read/write speeds of about 10 MB/s instead of 2-3 MB/s. That's what I got on the PC. Dunno how to easily see this on the phone
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
Ok, enough about read/write speeds!
There's not only advantages on speed with higher classes, there's also better performance in read/write cycles. Meaning longer life for our little buggers the higher you go in class.
You know that these things have limited write cycles right?
The choice is yours!

if you are just planning on using app2sd, it doesn't really matter which card you use, but if you're planning on going one step up like data2sd/data2ext then a 32GB class2 sandisk is much much much much much much much much much much much much much BETTER!
the reason why it's better is because what determines how much of an improvement data2sd/data2ext is over stock setup is how fast it can read/write small files (i.e. how fast it can write sqlite)
it's well documented that a class2 32GB sandisk (i'm only talking about that particular card, card of different size/class or manufacturer is a completely different beast) has a 4k random write speed of 2.5MB/s wheres kingston crap is about 0.04MB/s, sandisk32gbclass2 is 60 times faster than kingston crap
i foolishly listen to ppl on this forum about getting a class 10 microsd for improved performance so i bought myself a class10 4GB patriot microsd, it is a piece of sh!t! i benchmarked it with crystaldiskmark and sure enough squential read/write were 18/12MB/s well within specification. However the 4k random write was only 0.03MB/s
today after doing some research i forked out $20 to buy a class4 4GB sandisk which has 4k random write speed of 1.15MB/s, my phone has never been faster

Hi Community,
Does the class of a SD card really matters?
Info:
Using HTC Magic or see my sig
Using CyanogenMod 5.0.8.
Using Apps2SD
Using a 8GB ScanDisk class 2
and this morning when I try to play a game which is loaded onto the SD, not internally, my phone hanged, and followed by very sluggish response.
So I rebooted my phone, and when it was done, my SD card got corrupted. I tried to reformat and it won't. I used BOTH my phone's and computers/laptop's reformat function to do it and it won't work.
Thus, I guess I am left with a dead SD card.
Community, please tell me, does a class of SD card really matter for Apps2SD? I mean I did my research and their are 2 sides to it, some claims that ScanDisk cards are good enough, others suggested the need for class 6... Which is oh-my-god-so-expensive.
I thank anyone for the upcoming response.
Cheers,

As with all things computer, faster is better. I'm using a SanDisk 8G class 2 myself. Yes, apps 2 SD on a class 2. It's working for now, but I'm pretty sure that it's because I have a CDMA Hero. I haven't had many issues, other than my photos taking forever to load and one time that it locked up and I had to pull the battery. I'm looking at getting a class 6 8G real soon. I've seen them in the $20-25 range on eBay.

I guess we are better getting a higher class of sdcards. Thanks.
Yes we are. Class 2 works, but it's a bit slow for today's devices. I really thoght I was doing good with an 8 G, but the speed of R/W is a factor, especially with apps2SD.
From Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Secure_Digital
Speed Class Rating
The Speed Class Rating is the official unit of speed measurement for SD Cards, defined by the SD Association. It is equal to 1 MB/s (8 Mbit/s), and it measures the minimum sustained write speeds for a fragmented state
The following are the ratings of some currently available cards:
* Class 2: 2 MB/s
* Class 4: 4 MB/s
* Class 6: 6 MB/s
* Class 10: 10 MB/s
So theory stands - the faster the better (and more expensive!)

Inasmuch as a high speed card is better, at what speed are phones usually pulling/pushing data around at the moment?
I'm currently in the market for a 16/32Gb card for my SGS and this has made me curious on whether or not to consider Class 4+, as somewhere along the line the speed of the card might be irrelevant and the depth of my pocket will make its presence known.
It has been claimed (I think over on the CM forums) that the G1 is incapable of reaching speeds higher than Class 6.
That would be consistent with the state of the art when it was released.
In fact, I would expect that the newest round of phones coming out right now are the first that can handle Class 10. The cards have just been hitting the market lately.

A 16GB class 10 card for €104 is a big tag, but directly in line with speed....can find a 16GB class 2 in supermarkets for a fifth of that or thereabouts ;-)
Must shop around. I'm sure that a microSD card isn't onerous on shipping costs.
My local retailer already has stocks for the 32GB Sandisk MicroSD Class 2 card, I know sandisk under rates their cards but Im wondering if anyone has this specific microSD card can tell me how fast it read/writes if its inside the phone..
If possible post some benchmark numbers and the name of the benchmark, no actual screenshot needed, I just want a basis of comparison so my current 16GB class6 Team brand. I really need the space more than the speed though.
Haven't checked the speeds, but I can watch 720p video from my Sandisk Class 2 card, can't think of a use-case scenario where you need to read quicker than that. If you're writing large quantities of data to the phone very often the write speed may be an issue, but I suspect many people are like me and the only time they do that is when they first load their music collection onto the card.

Yeah, first load of music/movies into the card.
Please also remember that there is no standard way of measuring MicroSD speeds at the moment and the present system only really relates to the write speed. For playing content they will all be the same it is when recording HD video that the faster cards come into their own. I have also heard that all class 2 are actually class 4.
I just got the card now and the read speeds as tested by crystal disk is twice as fast as my Class 6 16GB the write speed is only slower at sequential w/c is 4.6MB compared to the 5.xx mb that my class 6 did but all the other write speeds are more than 2x faster!
$88 well spent!!
Yes its still $88 here and its the cheapest you can get!

Hi all,
What is the maximum capacity Micro SD card size on the TF and also, what Class type do I need?
Thanks in advance
32 gb has always been the limit.
OK thanks, but what 'class' type? I see class 4 and 10 advertised?
well the class is the write speed of the card. The higher the number the faster the speed with 10 being the fastest. I use a class 4 that i had from my thunderbolt and that works just fine
Dont think it matters what class, it's just the write speed of the sd card.
And what all can you use this SD memory for?
Class just specifies the maximum write speed, but with day to day use in the transformer (other than transferring the initial media) it's the read speed that's the most important. You''ll be storing and opening your media from it (music, pictures, videos and PDFs or other e-reader formats most often). Usually a card with fast write will have fast read speeds as well but there can be some anomalies with certain cards so it's not always so clear cut. In my experience anything above a class 4 seems to work just fine. If you're working with a lot of larger video files though probably class 6 or above would be better (and as it's also a little more future-proofed). I would always prefer to go with a named brand class 4 or 6 rather than a non branded class 10 though.

Even that isn't the whole story because it's incomplete - the class of the card minimum sustained write speed of the card under optimal conditions (i.e. a brand new and completely unfragmented card). I'm sure someone else can improve on that definition further!
As to what speed of card you need, from sdcard.org:
Class 2 : H.264 video recording, MPEG-4, MPEG-2 video recording
Class 4: MEPG-2 (HDTV) video recording, digital still camera (DSC) consecutive photo shooting
Class 6: Mega-pixel DSC consecutive photo shooting, professional video camera
Class 10: Full HD video recording, HD still picture consecutive shooting
Planning on doing any of these with your TF?
I've been using good quality Sandisk Class 2 cards in all my Android devices since the original T-Mobile G1, and *never* had an issue with them. Plus when testing, I usually get a write speed of around 7.5MB/s.
Regards,
Dave
I use a class 4 16gb and its fine. No problems. I think the faster classes are over rated. I typically try to find a class 4 or 6. Both work great. Don't waste your money.
You can get a 16gb for about $25 and a 32gb for around $40

FAssuming Asus implemented SD 2.0 standard, a 32 GB maximum storage capacity is your limit for any SDHC memory card. You can read more about it here: link.
As for which class you buy, it depends on what you're using the memory card for. Foxmeister answered with a class rating list. Do note that the higher the class rating, the more expensive the memory card is. Like wise with storage capacity. I recently bought my PNY 32 GB microSDHC class 10 memory card from buy.com for about $57. Caveat emptor with fake ones on eBay, especially ones shipping from China.

yep, picked up one of those "fakes on eBay". That really stunk.
Can asus transformer really take advantage of a Class 10 MicroSD card? Or should i just buy a class 4?
The difference in speed is noticeable but it depends on the price difference...
I think so. I have a samsung 32 Giga class 10 and the speed is appreciable.
You can find on amazone for around 35 Euros this type of micro sd
The class Does make a difference, I have a 32 class 8 that works very noticeably better than my class 2 4gb. If you do HD video or heavy file transfer jump for the higher class. Class 6+ should be plenty fast enough for the average user, I'd avoid less than 4 though. Just my thoughts.
from what Ive read on this forum though class 10 write speeds are faster in some devices the way android devices read is different and you actually want something like a class 4. thread is in one of the general forums, title is something about looking for fast 32GB SD cards. That being said I picked up 2 class 4 32GB micro SD cards from newegg when i got this transformer. the second went to my G2X replacing a 16gb class 10 card and i dont notice any loss of speed.
Yea. this is also depending on devices ability in handling class 6 to class 10..
Some older device can only handle 32GB with class 6 max but would give all sort of problems for the same 32GB with class 8 or class 10.
But this TF101 would have no problem for all type of classes available since it's running dual core by default.. So a class 10 would be the best choice to fully utilize TF101 true power and speed..

I have never heard of an older device having issues with faster card simply because of the class speed, they just wont read it at the speed the card is capable of. My G1 and N1 both handled class 10 cards without issue even though the phones could not read that fast.
Ive also never heard or see how a dual core would make any noticeable difference on read and write speeds.
BTW I think if my memory is correct the difference in class speeds was read/write. if you plan to transfer lots from device to device or constantly write to the card like a digital camera you would want class 10. if you have an android that will mostly be reading a class 4 or so was recommended.

If you're using this for a phone, you may not want a class 10. A class 2 or 4 Sandisk may be better for you. Depends what you're using it for.
Class 10 gives fast sequential speeds, but it usually sacrifices random read, write and access speeds. I could go into the reason why this happens, but I've posted several times about that, so you can check my previous posts for that.
Class 10 is good for digital cameras or other things where sequential speed is important and random speeds aren't important. If you're using the card to run apps off of, or system files for Android, or any OS actually, or using it for WP7, or anything that will need sequential speeds and fast access times, class 10s are slower than good quality class 2 or 4 cards like Sandisk.
Higher class DOES NOT mean better or faster for everything. Class only refers to sequential write speed. Different types of cards are better and faster for different tasks. Class 10s will many times slow down or cause lag in phones, depending on how the phone uses it. Sandisk class 2 and 4 cards I have found to be the best all around cards for phones.

Depending on the usage since by default /sdcard is mapped into its internal storage, uSD (Removable/MicroSD) is hardly used by the apps, of course, media file, backup (Nandroid or Titanium) will be faster with faster uSD.
Here is an extremely informational post about class speeds and what they really mean. I have a 32gb c10 and love it but it would behoove you to check out the Small Block Write Speeds in this post to see the real differences of read/write speeds.
I am going to buy myself a 64GB micro sd card. I guess I will go with sandisk. But as there are certain sd types there come certain speeds. Such as UHS-ll, UHS-I ,and microSDXC. Now I want to make sure that my phone (SM-G3858) Galaxy Beam 2 is able to do r/w at certain speed levels. But how can I determine that? How can I check if the sd card slot takes UHS-I? I can do a micro sd card speed check when I already bought the sd card (with some apps). But is there any way to check the speed compability BEFORE you even buy the sd card?
I did 3 speeds test on my kingston 18GB MicroSDHC/SDHC Class 10 and the sd benchmark tests were ranging from (max): Read 401,31MB/s Write 10,45MB/s (400 seemed a lot to me, but thats what it said) So that would mean my phone supports at least UHS-l?
I was thinking to buy either the Sandisk Extreme at 45r/45w, the Sandisk Ultra Plus at 40r/lower write or the Sandisk Ultra at 30r/lower write. Or should I go with another brand? Any help is appreciated
thanks
:good:
EDIT: After searching for several hours to find the best 64GB micro sd card I decided to go for the Samsung Evo 64GB. It has full 5 star reviews on amazon and the price was way better than the Sandisk extreme plus. (I paid 37 euros including shipping) This is the best review I found:
"This is a very fast card, particularly suited to not only transferring files quickly but also running as a phone or tablet card for applications as well.
In phones and tablets one of the most important things is not just the transfer speed but also the IOPs that the card can deliver. Many class 10 cards have great transfer speeds but terrible and I mean terrible IOPs, often a 5 year old card easily out performs them in IOPs.
This card delivers in both areas, fast class 10 transfer speeds 23mb read, 15mb write but also 482 write IOPs and 1668 read IOPs.
That's IOP speeds that are slower than an SSD but way faster than a hard disk. Bare in mind that some class 10 cards give 4 write IOPs and you can see why I'm impressed. The only card I have seen outperform it in IOPs it the SanDisk Extreme Pro and they are seriously expensive and not available in 64gb. Testing against the third SanDisk I have, a 32gb ultra, is almost funny as the ultra only gives 15 write IOPs under the same conditions, making this card 30 times faster.
What does this mean for normal use, well it translates into an excellent general purpose card, that even if it doesn't have the official fastest transfer speeds will actually perform much better in the real world. Which is why its getting such rave reviews on here for speed (so long as you get a genuine one!)
This was tested in my Dell Venue 8 tablet using the built in card reader. For the techies (if you've got this far then I assume you are)I am actually using it to run Server 2012 virtual machines in VMWare workstation and the performance is surprisingly good, I would even call it snappy!
