Can asus transformer really take advantage of a Class 10 MicroSD card? Or should i just buy a class 4?

I think so. I have a samsung 32 Giga class 10 and the speed is appreciable.

The class Does make a difference, I have a 32 class 8 that works very noticeably better than my class 2 4gb. If you do HD video or heavy file transfer jump for the higher class. Class 6+ should be plenty fast enough for the average user, I'd avoid less than 4 though. Just my thoughts.
from what Ive read on this forum though class 10 write speeds are faster in some devices the way android devices read is different and you actually want something like a class 4. thread is in one of the general forums, title is something about looking for fast 32GB SD cards. That being said I picked up 2 class 4 32GB micro SD cards from newegg when i got this transformer. the second went to my G2X replacing a 16gb class 10 card and i dont notice any loss of speed.
Yea. this is also depending on devices ability in handling class 6 to class 10..
Some older device can only handle 32GB with class 6 max but would give all sort of problems for the same 32GB with class 8 or class 10.
But this TF101 would have no problem for all type of classes available since it's running dual core by default.. So a class 10 would be the best choice to fully utilize TF101 true power and speed..

I have never heard of an older device having issues with faster card simply because of the class speed, they just wont read it at the speed the card is capable of. My G1 and N1 both handled class 10 cards without issue even though the phones could not read that fast.
Ive also never heard or see how a dual core would make any noticeable difference on read and write speeds.
BTW I think if my memory is correct the difference in class speeds was read/write. if you plan to transfer lots from device to device or constantly write to the card like a digital camera you would want class 10. if you have an android that will mostly be reading a class 4 or so was recommended.

If you're using this for a phone, you may not want a class 10. A class 2 or 4 Sandisk may be better for you. Depends what you're using it for.
Class 10 gives fast sequential speeds, but it usually sacrifices random read, write and access speeds. I could go into the reason why this happens, but I've posted several times about that, so you can check my previous posts for that.
Class 10 is good for digital cameras or other things where sequential speed is important and random speeds aren't important. If you're using the card to run apps off of, or system files for Android, or any OS actually, or using it for WP7, or anything that will need sequential speeds and fast access times, class 10s are slower than good quality class 2 or 4 cards like Sandisk.
Higher class DOES NOT mean better or faster for everything. Class only refers to sequential write speed. Different types of cards are better and faster for different tasks. Class 10s will many times slow down or cause lag in phones, depending on how the phone uses it. Sandisk class 2 and 4 cards I have found to be the best all around cards for phones.

Depending on the usage since by default /sdcard is mapped into its internal storage, uSD (Removable/MicroSD) is hardly used by the apps, of course, media file, backup (Nandroid or Titanium) will be faster with faster uSD.
Here is an extremely informational post about class speeds and what they really mean. I have a 32gb c10 and love it but it would behoove you to check out the Small Block Write Speeds in this post to see the real differences of read/write speeds.

Been looking around for which microsd card to replace my venue pro one with. definitely want a 32gb one. Pulled up a few, are a lot of people having problems with the class 4 cards? I'm 100% sure someone had posted the 32GB MicroSD card S/N they use. I don't remember which post it was, it is somewhere in the Venue Pro General form.
I think class 6 should work. Max Miller at ZDNet has posted a blog about how he swapped a troublesome dvp's 8gb card with 32gb n the dvp is working like a charm after that. It has a video aswell.

Whats the largest SD card Windows mobile 7 can handle, and if it's less than 128 will it be able to recognize "partitioned" SD cards?

And from a random (not sure if reliable though) article online, it says WP7's file system depends on random I/O seek time (or alike) which is a different dimension from class, which gauge the continuous transfer speed.

Why would a slower class work better than a faster class of SD? Class ten is the fastest your able to buy.
If I can buy a class 10 32gb would it work?

I swapped my 8GB class 4 that came with the device to a 32 GB SanDisk class 4. I do notice slower write speeds - 720p video in particular seems to have a lag when capturing. Other than that, the phone is zippy fast.
I bought a Dell Venue Pro (normally hate Dell and don't give them the time of day) and from what i've been reading i'm going to be stuck with a class 2 or 4 (32gb) MicroSD card. And to narrow it down even further supposedly the ones that work best with these phones are sandisk.
So my questions are this. Will I actually be able to use a class 10 microsd card or is it a limitation of the physical phone. I mean windows is capable of 32gb and probably more.
If it isn't able to use class 10 right now will there be a firmware update for the phone that will allow it.
What would happen if i bought a kingston or patriot over sandisk (as i've always considered them the bottom of the pile)
I've been using a 32gb sandisk (class 2) for a couple days now and it's awesome. Despite being class 2, it's way faster than the crappy class 4 that came with the phone.
Random r/w speed is the most important thing to worry about with WP7 devices. Class rating does not say anything at all about random r/w speed, just about the maximum throughput. In fact, there is often a NEGATIVE correlation between class rating and random r/w speed - the higher the class, the lower random r/w.
So that's why class 2, 4, or 6 cards seem to be the best.

I read that some cards were more accurate with their transfer claims than others. Can't remember the brand of card but one was recommended as being closer to the spec than the others. Also remember reading something somewhere that suggested a Class 10 card wasn't desirable and not necessarily faster because of how it worked, and that a Class 6 would do better for read/write and battery life. Your thoughts?
not really sure if I would spend the extra cash on a class 10 16b over a slower card for use in a phone. class 10 are superior for video, especially hd, like with a digital camera.
now, if the price is not much more I would go for class 10 but that is because I have found that once you replace your device, you may use your old card in a new device that now needs a faster card.

The problem with these ratings is that they're intended for use in recording devices, and don't discuss suitability for use in a device such as a PDA where you'll be running programs off of the card.
The information I've seen on the 'net is sketchy, which is why I'm asking here.
Two things to answer:
1) What class is suitable for running programs from the card?
2) What brand/model of card comes closest to advertised rating?

It really depends on a number of things, how much information is being used at one time for a certain app, since all apps are different. So you can't really say, but if you want to make sure then go with a class 10. A class 6 should be fine for most of the apps on android though.
As for which brand of card comes closest to advertised. Each Sd card is different just like every processor is different. You can get a Kingston 8gig class 4 that only transfers at 3mb/s or one that transfers at 4.2 mb/s. Generally a good standard to go by is (cheap/fast/reliable) you can only pick two.
The only way you are going to know the actual speed of the card is to bench test it. For my money though I would probably go with kingston or pny.
The stock card is a Sandisk class 4 and based on that I would say that a class 4 would be fine, but a higher class shouldn't hurt.

It really depends on what you plan on doing with the card/phone. If you are just going to use it for apps and smaller data files the class 4 or 6 will be fine. For me I use the phone for work and media. I stream music via bluetooth in my car and wired to my boat while also storing larger pdfs for work, like my companies catalog. Not to mention if I ever want to take any 720p vids.
I have a 16gb class 6 that has outlived its usefulness as Android stores more data on it than my previous windows phone, so I'm deleting more & more music to make room. I just purchased a Wintec 32gb class 10. I will test the speed with the card in the phone mounted to my computer via usb and if the speeds aren't there I have no problem putting it in a card reader to transfer what I need. I can easily throw 18gb of 192bit mp3s on it, more if I keep some of the songs as flac. I feel the time saved transferring justifies the $76 price.
If you go with a larger card just remember to unmount it before disconnecting and you'll save yourself a lot of headaches.

I'm not saying it can't, I have a 8 mega pixel sony cybershot that has a carl ziess lens and its pictures are way clearer then my 14 mega pixel cannon point and shoot, but like I said before you have to bench test it before you know its true potential. One kingston 16gig class 10 is not going to preform the same as another kingston 16gig class 10. It is possible to have a class 6 out perform a class 10, but in general the higher the class the faster the transfer rates.

Personally I am not sure I tend to stick with pny and kingston. What I would recommend is looking on amazon or another place that has reviews usually a good reviewer will post a bench test with transfer rates.
I have been using this Adata 16gb cl6 for over a year and a half. The only problems I've had with it are occasional corrupting, but that is completely attributable to my lack of unmounting the card before disconnect. I haven't had a single issue since I started unmounting.
I would also recommend their cl10 card which can be found here.
I wish Adata made a 32gb version. I will report my results on the Wintec once I receive it.
I used a class 4 16gb SanDisk for a long time and it always was fine. I am a sucker for room though, and bought a Lexar 32GB Class 10 and I really couldnt be happier.
I just researched this the other day and can't find the link for the life of me..
Basically from what I read the class 2 and class 4 cards have a faster read than the class 6 and 10's. It has to do with some initializing the 6 and 10's do which is an extra step compared to the 2 and 4's.
For a digital camera the class 6's and 10's are better but for phones a class 4 is ideal. If I can find that darn link i'll post it.
I have an 8gb class 6 transend in my N1 atm and when I get my Inspire in tomorrow i'm going to test the class 4 against the class 6 to see which one has a higher read speed.

"The higher the better"-that's a false statement, but if you want to get the best oud of the MicroSD, go for class 4 or class 6. Am currently using a class 4 8gb.

the fact it may not support as high a speed class as you can find.
for example my N1 would support a more expensive class 10 card but not at those speeds as the N1 was limited to i believe 4? so a class 4 is all you would need

There are also quite a few tests out there that show many class 10s transferring slower than some 6s. I shopped around for a while on newegg, not many good things coming out of the 10s on that site. 16gb Adata 6 is what i settled for. If I end up needing something larger in the future, and I have the money, I probably would go with the 32gb Lexar class 10.
what's the cheapest anyone bought a 16gb from a reputable site/seller online? i'm eying the patriot 16gb on amazon for $25. 3rd party seller can be fake.

Theoretically, that is the case. 10s are suppose to be faster. But that's the manufacturer's marketing that says such. In real world testing, they are not getting much faster speeds (or are actually slower) than some 4s and 6s.
Buyer beware.. do the research yourself and you'll find what I found. I wanted to get the best card for this phone.. and after much reading, I stayed away from the 10s.. Do some browsing on newegg and read the reviews on all their 10s.. it's not pretty.
I'm not sure about other SD cards but i have a class 6 on my N1 that while it worked it wasn't great when running some apps from it or when view lots of pix in the gallery.
with the G2X that isn't as much an issue, but can anyone recommend a fast 16gb card? hopefully fast enough to run apps from if i need it later on

I dont know for certain but I doubt the G2X supports class 10 speeds.
as far as cards being slower than the advertised rating, its just typical marketing. just like HP ratings, GHz clock speeds, Megapixels, Amps,watts, ect ect
The class speeds stamped on these cards are notoriously unreliable. The 16GB Class 2 card that came with my HD2 consistently beats my brand new Class 6 card on every benchmark I run. I recommend buying from a retailer with a decent return policy and benchmarking your new card to make sure your getting the speed you've paid for.
The other issue is at what speed the G2X's SD interface maxes out...and I've seen no data on that...

I did on the Adata 16gb class 6.. It was reading at around 18 and writing at over 10. That was putting it up there w/ class 10 specs..
Manufacturers suggest using the SDFormatter V3 to format the card instead of using other utilities in the phone or windows.

I don't think anyone knows for certain what the phone is capable of. If you find that out, great.. please let us know.
What I'm trying to relay is that the speeds mentioned on class 10s are not what they are all cracked up to be. Sure, higher is better.. but it's only better if it actually achieves a higher speed. Also, it must be a higher speed that can justify the price difference. Beating a class4 by a cpl mb/s but double the costs was not worth it. I spent a few days doing research on this.. studying many different test results, etc. I could go back through and find all the data for ya.. but I don't have time. My final result was that the class 10s were not worth it.. they had a higher fail rate than the 4s and 6s.. they were less recommended/had lower reviews than the 4s and 6s.. in some cases, they performed slower or at par w/ a 4 or 6, and they were dbl the price. There was absolutely nothing that said it was a good route to go. Nothing outside of the marketing.. "Class 10!!!"
In some cases, depending upon manufacturer, you can find a class 4/6 that will outperform some class 10s. I also see a much lower customer satisfaction, malfunctioning cards, returns, etc. when it comes to the class 10s.. much more than any other class.

well the class is the write speed of the card. The higher the number the faster the speed with 10 being the fastest. I use a class 4 that i had from my thunderbolt and that works just fine

In my experience anything above a class 4 seems to work just fine. Even that isn't the whole story because it's incomplete - the class of the card minimum sustained write speed of the card under optimal conditions (i.e. a brand new and completely unfragmented card). I'm sure someone else can improve on that definition further!
As to what speed of card you need, from sdcard.org:

Class 10: Full HD video recording, HD still picture consecutive shooting
Planning on doing any of these with your TF?
I've been using good quality Sandisk Class 2 cards in all my Android devices since the original T-Mobile G1, and *never* had an issue with them. Plus when testing, I usually get a write speed of around 7.5MB/s.

I use a class 4 16gb and its fine. No problems. I think the faster classes are over rated. I typically try to find a class 4 or 6. Both work great. Don't waste your money.
You can get a 16gb for about $25 and a 32gb for around $40

FAssuming Asus implemented SD 2.0 standard, a 32 GB maximum storage capacity is your limit for any SDHC memory card. You can read more about it here: link.
As for which class you buy, it depends on what you're using the memory card for. Foxmeister answered with a class rating list. Do note that the higher the class rating, the more expensive the memory card is. Like wise with storage capacity. I recently bought my PNY 32 GB microSDHC class 10 memory card from buy.com for about $57. Caveat emptor with fake ones on eBay, especially ones shipping from China.

yep, picked up one of those "fakes on eBay". That really stunk.
I am looking at either a Lexar or Samsung both class 10, both around £37.
any advise as to which one is best based on anyone using.
The other question is do you need to format before use?
At the moment I have a 16gb but it is 98% full. Never chenged a card before was planning to copy the old card into a folder on laptop and then back onto the new card.

Go with transcend. If they have 32gb class 10.
They only do a 16gb class 10. I looked for Transcend first as I prefer this brand.....

I like transcend more than anything else.
I never had luck with transcend, i have a sandisk 32 gig which works great,
i had a kingston 32 class 10 within a few weeks it just burnt out on me it stop reading and wouldnt want to format or anything
I'm also looking for a 32gb micro sdhc for my HTC Vogue. I currently have a Sandisk 16gb that is nearly full. Earlier today I stumbled onto this thread from here at XDA...

I was surprised that class 10 cards weren't the best choice for the things I use my Vogue for.
Here is a passage that surprised me...
"Class 2 and 4 cards have better random access speed and random read/write than class 6 or 10 cards in general. To get higher sequential write speeds, manufacturers sacrifice the random access speeds.".
I would agree with Random read/write access might be better in Class 4 cards than Class 10...
But arent we forgetting that most of the applications are read more than Written when u open it.. I think a faster read speed with lower write speed would still be better than having lower read/write all together...Not unless you are downloading a torrent in background and running HD game with it... infact in that situation.. both cards will fail badly..
I prefer Sandisk.
A class 4 should generally give proper performance... 10 seems a bit overkill imho.
I've used the 8GB class 4 memory card that came with the Sensation for a while, and after switching to a 32GB class 10 Lexar I must say - it DOES make a difference. It's a totally different experience.
Been using SAMSUNG ESSENTIAL 32GB MicroSD for more than 2 months without issues. It has helped me to parallely download videos from tubemate in high speeds. Good writing and reading speeds. No slowdowns/jatter in 1080P recording which iam always using to cap my child.
Just bought a 32GB Class 10 Samsung card from play.com for £34.99. Working great so far!
I got the 16GB SD card for two reasons
1. The 16GB has a faster write speed.
2. I didn't have $90 to spend on the 32GB.

Copied a film over to it via usb last night and was getting 11.6 mb/s. Haven't tested with the card in a reader but would probably be faster even still.
