Otterbox over rated? - Nexus One Accessories

I work selling phones.. So I get asked for the otterbox all the time.. despite never having any..
However, I am wondering if anyone else out there feels the otterbox is over rated... I mean sure it may protect your phone from a nuclear holocaust.. However, if your buying a phone that is a half an inch thick.. it probably adds two and a half inches to it.. (exaggerated I know but, you get the point).
While while I know everyone wants their phone to be protected..It seems sort of ironic that you find a phone that you like... (I personally love the style of the nexus one from what I've seen.. I'll judge it more in real life when/if I get one)... However meandering back on topic.. If you like the style of your phone.. why get a huge bulky case for it? I mean I see it every day.. people want the iphone and love the way it "looks".. (iphone is best example I can think of atm).. And then they turn around and want an otterbox to protect it..
I know accidents happen and we are willing to do what it takes to make sure our investments stay pretty.... However, Lately I've come to wonder if thins like otterbox are really the answer....
*edit* I also laugh because people keep telling me it is waterproof.. and with a name like OTTER box you would think it is... but, the majority of them warn "not protective against water"

You're assuming people buy fancy phones because of how they look and not functionality. I bought a Nexus One because of it's power. It's looks are a nice plus since it's so sleek, but really i just want a great phone that can do the things i want it to do.
When people go buy an iphone or any other smart phone sure they think it looks cool and its a factor in their decision to buy said phone but at the end of the day does it matter how it looks? Or is it more important to make sure your $200-$500 investment stays protected?
I have the otterbox commuter series for my N1 and although it makes it slightly larger i love it and am glad i got it. Helps me put my head at ease since i'm afraid of dropping it and whatnot

Don't mistake me I'm not putting anyone down for buying an otterbox..
However, I've noticed the ones for the iphone multiply the size alot..
And for what you pay for an otter box it does do its job I don't think there is any denying that..
However, while you do buy smartphones for functionality, I think it is safe to say we expect them to look nice as well...
My main concern when dropping more or less any phone is scratching it not it breaking altogether.. However, there in lies the irony.. Huge bulky case which adds considerable size to the phone..
Or worrying about having it scratched or possibly break.. with that said any sane person would go for some form of protection.. However, I suppose I just see an irony if the phone is comfortable before the case and less so after.. when comfort of use is something I imagen most of us would demand from a phone.

For us N1 owners, remember that we bought it sight unseen (going solely by pictures). So I think a large majority got this phone because it was (and still is) the badass world changer... Sleakness and style were just a bonus.
Particularly for me, I have big hands (i wear size xl gloves), so having this ultra thin phone in my hand just doesn't feel comfy.
I had the body glove first and liked out alot, but when I saw the pics for the Otterbox Commuter, I had to have it!
The little bit of extra thickness is actually welcome and fits beautifully in my hand now. It's also one of the few (maybe only) cases that plugs the power and headset ports.
Anyway, your point about the irony of people buying a phone because of its sexy sleekness, to only put some case on it is valid... Just no so much so for us N1 folks that bought it for what it can do, not so much how it looks!

Using the iPhone as an example I think people get cases because you can't get decent insurance for the phone from AT&T (may change with iPhone 4, who knows). If you break your iPhone you are out a sizable lump sum which some people can't afford. A case is inexpensive protection against some of this risk.
Since you can get a $6/mo full replacement insurance on the Nexus One this risk is less of a problem, but even with lower risk dealing with insurance claims are inconvenient. A case then boils down to how abusive you are to devices. I have friends that drop their phone *all the time* so a strong protective case is mandatory or their phone wouldn't last a month.
It's all a trade-off. I usually don't use a case on my phone but if I'm doing something higher risk having a case around to pop-on is a nice option.

That is a very good point. Things can appear very differently once you see them in real life from the glamour shots on google.
With that said, I suppose it is because I do find the nexus one aesthetically pleasing that I am so easily able to ask. It was a logically fallacy to think that others had the same views on aesthetics I did.
And if in the next week or two I pull the trigger, I will be pulling it for what I want the phone to do.. not for how it looks.. Although if a phone looked "unacceptable" in terms of aethetics.. It better be a marvel of modern science.
I am not obsessed with looks by any means but, I suppose I expect things to have some sense of style.

I have the Otterbox commuter case. There not to bulky mostly use it when im at work other than that I don't use a case for my Nexus.

I couldn't justify anything bigger than an invisible protector for daily use....but that's because anything else would interfere with the car dock

My N1 lives in the neoprene sleeve it came with as I'm paranoid about it getting damaged. I hadn't heard of Otterbox until now, after having a look I think I may have to get one

So true!
Just like when I bought my G1.
It was rectangular. Had this silly chin thing on it. And it was thick!!!
But I didn't care about how thick it was, or how it looked, or how it was perceived by anyone. I KNEW, that with support from Google, it would be the best device I ever owned.
AND THENNNN, came the announcement of the Nexus One
My heart just about stopped!
Both phones were and are ahead of their time (in my opinion).
Both my G1 and N1, only have a screen protector.
I've never been afraid of dropping my phone, because I never have.
It's never in my top shirt pocket. Never in a belt holster. It's always safe in my pocket, safe in my palm, or safe sitting on my desk.
As for bulky protectors?
That's why I don't dare buy one.
I've yet to read a 10 star review for a protective thing case.
Until then, I'll continue to baby my N1

My buddy heard about the Quadrant benchmark app, and wanted to compare the results of his EVO to my Nexus.
He was shocked that my 6 month old device kicked his ash, hahaha.

[Q] All about Otterbox..

First of all, sorry if theres an existing topic about this.
Which one suits you? The Defender or the Commuter and why? For me I "think" the Commuter will suit me because I'm not the ones who does it hard , But the downside for me is that Commuter series got a lot of problems, like the rubber part became loose and the hard case often gets a crack without doing anything harsh(e.g: some people broke it while removing the hard case just to clean it, some people said it cracked without doing a thing!). So about the Defender series they said it is very attractive to dust and the screen protector makes the screen difficult to look at sometime, the worse of all is the Bulkiness. So.. Need some opinions here, "Thanks" in advance!
Hello , you can find same otterbox thread here . I've bought defender in march , no problem to use my phone everyday , my DHD is really in safety with it ...
I use the commuter and love it. The little plastic piece by the power button broke from the amount I press it. It was a bummer but I cut it off a bit and I don't notice it now.
I like this case because it keeps the phone protected without adding a ton of bulk. It also keeps the camera lens from scratching from setting the phone down on its back.

Well, many many thanks to both of you guys. It gave me more options.. So..
1 - Commuter
1 - Defender
I love my commuter. Not too bulky, can still change the battery within a reasonable amount of time. Still feels like I could throw my phone at the wall without damage (Not going to try).
I find the commuter is not too bulky and feels like it will protect the phone from most things. But I seem to use it less now since i rarely seem to drop my phone, though I may soon (hopefully not though) regret that soon.
Commuter here, broken part of the plastic casing though so off to there website now to see if I can get spares..
My Commuter case looked so good.
I bought one to protect the phone, of course.
It cracked right between the speaker on the back, and the rubber area between the power button and volume rocker switch.
It did this while either adjusting volume or hitting power. I've never compressed the case much, its either in my pocket or gently put down flat on a surface. It's never been dropped, and I only had it for a month and a half at the time.
It sucks because the case seems like a sure fire winner for protecting my phone, then this issue happens after a month and a half. I think I'll go get a refund from Telus, because I'm not going to get another that'll end up having the same problem.
I might get the defender for when I go up to the cottage, though, however I'm pretty disappointed so far with the reliability of this case.
I've got the defender and so far i am satisfied albeit its really bulky.. XD

I ordered Otterbox Commuter when they dropped in price and I'm really satisfied.
My phone doesn't drop often but it's just a safer feeling that I have when handling it.
I really recommend it because it's not as bulky as the Defender series.
I'm using Commuter for my DHD and I pretty happy with it! Not too bulky and it make my DHD look more rugged. Now I dont have problem to put it on any table or surface because I dont have to worry the back case and camera lense will scratch.
I have used the commuter for the last 11 months. It has saved my DHD from my destructive 4 year old many times.
I decided on the commuter over the defender as the defender was really large and the commuter wasn't that much larger in my hand. Actually I think it makes the DHD easier to grip.
I couldn't recommend the commuter highly enough.
i've got the defender, have demonstrated it's drop protection (by dropping it of course) many times to friends etc. no cracks
have also dropped it a few times by accident, and no problems whatsoever, it does sound painful when it hits the floor though!
i'd recommend this case any day, the bulkiness is worth it, it does protect it really well. I peeled my screen protector off it straight away.
I've got the commuter.
The silicon is great (allthough it's ripped apart at the micro-usb port).
The shell on the other hand doesn't like being dropped to often and really hates it when you take it off your phone. Got cracks in all four corners and one of them became really really long after some time. Fixed it with a lot of superglue but it's sadly not made to last very long.
i have the commuter for several months now. it was the best buy since my DHD. doesn't make the phone much heavier/thicker. but i think it feels better in my hand when holding it. i really love it. also the silicon covering the plugs is a pretty great idea.
i can't confirm the low quality and possible cracks my pre-posters mentioned. i'm not having any of them.

It was fine for almost a year.
And it's saved my phone multiple times from being damaged in drops.
So don't get me wrong, i really like it!
But the cracks are there...
I know this is an old thread but I just wanted to add in that I love my defender series. I thought it was "just nice to have" until I dropped it out of my pocket on a busy street without knowing, and watched a car drive over it once I turned around.
You'd think that it would be crushed even with a nice Otterbox case... but I'd have to say "Nope" because when I picked it up off of the street the box and the phone were still in MINT condition. Best piece of plastic I've ever purchased.

Two pieces of plastic and all the waterproof membranes. You're paying for the R&D as well as the quality nof a name brand. It's cheaper than the otterbox armor cases go for as well as lifeproof cases. If it's too much buy a cheap one from ebay and after you submerge it in water and your phone is garbage buy a more expensive case for your new phone.

If you have a couple of days to read this, here is my thoughts (LOL)...
Well, you are correct there is never a 100% guarantee, even if 99% of the units work great 1% might have problems. It reminds me of the S4 Active. The difference is that $90 for this case is a lot cheaper than taking the same gamble for a $600 phone. At least that is the way I look at it.
I'm just looking to use the case as a "what if" type of protection. Hopefully, it will be a lot better than that. I hope it will be good enough to take into the water and take pictures with or drop the phone from chest-pocket high and not have a scratch, but I'm not going to expect it to be that good until I test it to that point...slowly. The case's rating is better than the rating of the S4 Active, but that is only as good as the smallest defect might let it be.
I have square trade insurance, but I would rather not use it. I don't want to take the chance of getting a phone with MF3 as a replacement or even having to re-setup a phone that has MDL. To me, the $90 is worth the extra protection. So even if it doesn't stand up to the ideal standard, it will still be worth it for the extra protection is does give.
You see, I know the case I have on the phone now will not protect it as good as the OBEX will... I currently use the Seidio Surface and it is a real good case, but even if it only lives up to half of the hype the OBEX will protect it better.
Again, it will be a "wait and see" situation as to how good it will work. Maybe I won't throw it in the water right away, but it is nice to know if I accidentally drop it in the water that it should help.
One of the major things I want to know is how well it will handle heat displacement. Under normal conditions, my phone never gets real hot, but in my ibolt car cradle, charging with the sun hitting it through the windshield and using Navigation, it is a different story. I want to see how it handles those situations. So for me, inside forces are going to be more interesting than how it protects from outside forces. But, I will report what I find out.
I like the previous poster's thought process. I have a S4 with ATT and bought the S4 Active the third day it came out. I never used it outside of the house because there were no cases etc for it. After a week or so I started seeing reports of issues. Since I spent $640 on that phone, I thought I could do everything right with this phone and still have it get ruined by using it in a manner that they promote. I returned it after a week.
I then bought the Lifeproof case for my iphone 5 and it was amazing. I was taking pictures and video in the pool! My wife has a S3 and we bought her a Lifeproof case for our beach vacation. I was great having our phones (left my S4 at home) on the beach and the sand and in the water. Of course we tested the cases first underwater without the phones like they recommend.
I will seriously look at the Obex for the S4. The S3 model was too big and they say they have slimmed down the S4 model. $90 is great for the peace of mind near the pool or water which we are almost daily living in Dallas. Not sure I would leave it on all the time but surely on the weekends so hopefully it is fairly easy to put on and remove.
With the money from returning my s4 Active I got a S4 Google Play edition which is an amazing device! That is another post though...

Thanks.
I have the ST warranty as well on my S4 and my wife's S4 Active. I do like the idea of being able to take pictures under water, but the biggest benefit for me would be the dust proofing. I can't stand the lint from jeans pockets mixing with skin oils and getting jammed in every nook and cranny on a phone. It is gross, and eventually eats away at the finish.
I do understand the fact that we would be paying for R&D, and I am no enemy of companies making a profit, but from the consumer side (at least from my point of view) $80 is a bit steep for a couple pieces of plastic that 'may' protect your phone under water.

It is a lot especially since I already payed a good amount for an Otterbox. But my daughter put a cup of juice on my night stand once while I was sleeping didnt know it was there and knocked it over on my droid 2 and it ruined it. I went 4wheeling with my s2 and sunk my quad with my phone in my pocket in a river and it was done for a week and then I was lucky enough it worked again but after a few months started having problems. So its worth it to me that I know if something haopens my phone will be ok. And its cheaper than paying for insurance and a deductible if my ohone got destroyed.

True.. however don't you also need the insurance in addition to this case if you live such an active lifestyle?
I am not knocking the need for the case. I just don't see the company selling all that many at that price tag. Surely they could easily cover R&D with quantity. There's maybe $5 in materials in it... purely from a business standpoint, for a more attractive price they can lure people away from the cheap knock-offs.
the case does look pretty solid, though. I doubt there will be many complaints about the quality.

I see your point brother, but I know I'm getting it after I see a third party stress test it before I pay for it.
I work for a cell company and the case we sell the most is the lifeproof and the Atlas (also $89.99 price tag) , and at least 50% of my s3/4 customers want that option, of course I live in a rural state so lots of hunters and outdoorsy types, but point is there is a demand for them, I want mine for the waterproof, me and friends regularly go to the river on days off.

I've got my S4 in the Seidio Surface and with the Convert for outdoors etc. Would love to get the OBEX for those water days, but being that summer is almost over and wont see much water here in NY except for rain and snow I'm having a hard time justifying another $90 for case and holster when I already have 2. All I'd be adding is waterproof. My Convert already protected me from a 6 ft drop to cement floor.
Also thinking for those that are planning this as weekend case, what effect adding and removing the case so many times will do to its waterproof capabilities.
I just got an email saying my case has been shipped. Hopefully it has actually been shipped and not just a label made up waiting to be shipped next week like they originally said. I would like to get it before Wednesday because I'm going to the shore for a few days. It would be nice to have it.

Why do people complain about build quality if there going to use a case?

Is it just me or does it this annoy you to? when people are comparing phones and lets say for example the galaxy s4 to something like the HTC one. They would say the galaxy s4 is made out of plastic and the HTC one medal. They say the HTC ones build i hands down better. Now why does that matter if 4 out of 5 people with each phone will put a otter box case or something else on it.
Sent from my SCH-I545 using xda app-developers app
It could potentially impact the durability of the phone I suppose, but I agree, it's largely irrelevant. People will just take any reason they can find to try to prove that their phone of choice is the 'best'.
I got a Lumia 521 for $79 (total cost) which is about the worst in build quality. Got the best case I could find for it and it helped tremendously. So this can work for you also. Hide low build quality with a decent case!
Really, the only concern I have with build quality is how sturdy the phone is. I'm a clumsy guy and I'm prone to drop my phone a bit. I want to know then when I drop the phone, it will stay in one piece. Maybe even be resistant to scratches/dents. The last think I want is for the thing to shatter like brittle glass.
Other than that, a case will hide any shortcomings.

i personally prefer a plastic device with removable barttery and sd card slot than a full metal body with these limitations. it would be best though if samsung replaced the plastic on the next S flagship with aluminum(something like htc sensation). however this would mean to return to square one and redesign everything, therefore making it more expensive. i believe that they don't want to risk their good sales and do something that may leave a scar on their reputation. in addition, i don't know of any samsumng device made of metal, so it would be a huge change for them.
we, as users, would have to take into account some other disadvantages of a metal body. i put an sgs3 in a metal locker and it lost almost all the signal, it even missed a few calls, it caused huge battery drain (when in low signal area devices lose batteruy faster) so the antennas will have to be placed accordingly. plus, scratches and marks are more visible on metal, you can't really put a plastic case on a metal device(in most cases it is really inestethic, imho. but it depends on the case), hard cases can affect connectivity and if dust or sand is caught between the phone and the case it will produce nasty marks on the phone.
so, practically, plastic devices are better. it's just the common opinion that they look and feel cheap. i look forward to reading further replies on this matter.

The reason I love my s4 is the removable battery. if I know I'm going to need it I use my 7500 mAh battery if not I use my stock battery. I hate when people say its made of plastic. So then I show them my extended battery and then they become amazed LOL

case quality
I'm always amazed at how expensive some cases are - £30 for a case is really unreasonable imo. My I9000 was protected really well in a £3 case I bought off eBay!
I think it does not matter, but my Sony Xperia P is constructed of metal, and in my opinion it feels better than plastic:fingers-crossed:
How is it possible to be so much expensive! I pay only US$20 for mine. I use switcheasy colours. nice to touch, but only last 1 year and then cuts appeared in case. had to get new 1. sorry for any bad english.

Simply because casing adds bulk to the device. If the build is great, there is no need to use any case at all because we are assured that it is fine with heavy duty usage ang rough environment.
It's usually Apple fans that claim Android phones have poor build quality...and then put their delicate iPhones in a protective case.

Well Iphones are meant to have 'superior build quality' but I think that is debatable
Brand new they look amazing, with a bit of use, not so much. I suppose it all depends on the care taken by the user, but my personal experience with Iphones holding their looks isn't great. My Iphone 4 had numerous scratch marks on the glass. My Iphone 5 was covered with marks on the bezel.
Whilst my samsung phones didn't look as premium, they didn't mark up like the Iphones.
If build quality is based purely on durability, I don't know if a phone being metal makes a difference. If it's based purely on looks, perhaps, but then as I mentioned, the looks of a metal phone don't necessarily hold up.
Also on the subject of 'build quality'. I am definitely in the minority it seems, but I don't like the look of the silver HTC one. Sure it's aluminium, but for whatever reason I just don't think it looks that good? Just thought I would put it out there because everyone goes on and out about how good the HTC one looks
because people in their nature don't like to waste their hard earned $ on something made of chew-able toy plastics, especially far an expensive flagship phones
its like questioning or undermining everything fine in life, why do u pay for that expensive leather or well designed wallet, its just a wallet after all
or why do you pay good money for a good quality car with fancy dashboard, a crash is a crash after all
i am sorry but this makes no sense
justifying lack of taste or quality by the "case" argument is just like hiding your head in the sand
there real question is: Why is the richest Android builder of them all so dead cheap with it's loyal customers?
and the answer is: LEMONS
Alternative answer: it's all wasted on marketing
Stop justifying lemons, currently Samsung is sitting at the rock bottom when it comes to design or quality, you name it, Apple, Sony, HTC, LG, Nokia even Huwai are all building better than your (un)precious Samsung
Personally I couldn't care less what the phone is made of, because at the end of the day the phone is a productivity tool. What matters is what I can *do* with the phone, not what it looks like or feels like. I could understand if metal was more durable than plastic, but that is debatable. My phone is plastic and it's in the same shape as the day I bought it. My iPod touch is metal and has tons of scratches on the back. I've treated them the same.
The problem with phones made of metal is that they typically have a non-removable battery and many of them don't even have a microSD slot! When it comes down to form vs. function, I'm going to choose function every time.
It's about material choice and balance for the money spent.
Plastic is good, like the Nexus 5 but glossy plastic is bad as it is fingerprint magnet and fugly (S4). Aluminium also dents, Check out all the 6 months after of HTC One and iPhone.
Also price matters too, you don't wanna spend a lot of money just to get a cheap looking and feeling plastic.
And most people use cases but it's always good to have a great built quality inside.
A sound phone dwells within a sound built quality, and a sound case.
Sent from my blazing fast Nexus 4
Build quality and using a case are 2 different issues, using a case doesn't mask the build quality....like poor headphone sockets that go wrong, or buttons that get stuck (hard to press).
Personally I always drop my phone - clumsy in nature! So have to have a case. Now i'm looking for one which has a battery built in to double my usage time for the Samsung S4. That chomps up battery like nobody's business. I am a heavy user to be fair. Just my 2 cents

Portenzo Bookcase for the Nexus 9

Today the FedEx guy showed up with my Portenzo bookcase.
This is the first time I've ever ordered a case that cost me 100+ after shipping, but damn does it feel solid. The wood frame isn't too tight and putting the N9 in was easy, removing is just as easy since I have the intellistand feature which allows me to prop up the tablet with the added bonus of allowing me to push at the back of the N9 to remove it if necessary.
I got it in black (yes I'm not very creative) but to me it looks like a nice mystery book with no title. I didn't get the magnets that keep the cover closed, it was already quite expensive and I felt that I could live with a strap that kept the case closed. It feels great to hold and the sleep/wake magnet works pretty well.
Overall the case is very solid and in my opinion is a bit expensive but does offer the style and a sense of security for the N9.

I'm jealous. Hopefully I will get mine soon!
I just bought a Portenzo for my wife's Ipad and received it yesterday. They are amazing cases. I really don't think you can find a better case for a tablet.

Hey thanks for sharing great pics. Can you tell me where you got the bookcase or show me a link? It's pretty expensive in my opinion lol but I would like to check it out.
Just google Portenzo and you should find it. It is expensive and I can't get myself to pay that premium.

That's the link. It's expensive but then they also have the pricier leather model. I wish I was loaded and got that. Maybe for my next tablet, for now I like the standard bookcover.
Amazing wonder if the ship to Canada?
What about the camera you need to remove the N9 for pictures?
Worry about heat?

I think you have to pay $5 more for the camera hole. Keep in mind, they hand make these tablets made to order for each customer individually. It is DEFINITELY worth the price, in my opinion, it is just a matter of how long you will keep the tablet. I bought one for my wife because she will keep her Ipad until the damn thing literally falls apart. For me, I wouldn't dare spend that much money on a tablet case because I always have to upgrade.

Thanks I found out about the camera from the website, after I sent Portenzo a message.
Do you think ventilation maybe a issue with the tablet in the case?
People are complaining about heat, it looks like it may if anything add to the issue.

I dont think so but I'm sure it depends on the tablet. The nexus 9 does get hot but i dont think the portenzo will be effected more than other cases.

They do ship to Canada and provide different shipping options too.
I did pay for the camera cut out, it was 5 dollars I think. As for the heat output, the N9 has room to breathe and it doesn't seem to hinder the tablet from cooling down in anyway. I'm not sure (is wood a good insulator/conductor?), but to me it works fine.
I plan on keeping the N9 for a while since it's just the right size compared to the smaller N7 (2012 and 2013) and the Shield Tablet just wasn't to my liking. So spending this much for a sense of security is nice, plus it feels amazing.
I just ordered one, sure from what I read I will not be disappointed
Looks amazing and is my style but I'm entirely too active to have one of these.

I just took delivery of mine and it looks great! Maybe I have more money than sense, but this is my third Portenzo case, the others were for my Nexus 7s. It looks particularly good in this size and aspect ratio, and the angle on the stand is perfect. I wouldn't use anything else.

Well, I was not considering this case until reading this thread, and it seems that this would be a worthwhile investment. LinS123, wood is a great insulator- there should be NO problems with letting the tab breathe. I think that this case looks quite worth the money.
Got it
Two things I am not fond about.
1) It is thicker than I expected. Kind of a let down makes the Nexus 9 in the case at least twice as thick than a naked Nexus 9.
2) Should of not got the elastic.

Yeah, I just am not using a case, I think. Too much bulk. I have a little carrying case, but I'm not going to strap it into an overbearing piece of plastic.
I purchased an OTG cable, does not fit in the cut out.
It is shame, not going to cut down the opening and while the Nexus 9 is nice a secure do not want to pull it out of the case.
These are some great looking cases. I especially like the leather ones. I might have to pick one up! Thanks for sharing op!

[Q] S6 non-wallet leather case (back only, brown, in US)

I think there used to be a thread on this, but I can't find it anymore. Here's my question:
I'm looking for a thin leather case for my S6. Not so much a wallet style case, sleeve, or one with a closure, just a protector for the back and sides of the device. My experience with PU or low-grade leather (<$20) isn't great, so I'm fine spending a little more money (>$50).
Ideally, it would be brown and available in the US. The options I've seen so far don't fit in with the color, price, or domestic availability. Any suggestions? If you're going to suggest these, I've already looked at them and they are a bust:
I'm an XDA noob, so I'm prevented from posting links, but I've looked at cases from Stilgut (can't order from Amazon US and potential returns to DE seem difficult), Sena (no back-only case for the S6), Vaja (not making a case for the S6), and Montblanc (if I'm gonna spend $110, I need one that is perfect, i.e., brown). None fit the bill.
Again, apologies if this is a duplicate thread. Any help/suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!
P.S. As an aside, I'd consider a wooden case, but none of those (Carved, Toast, etc.) seem to be what I'm looking for either.
I'm interested in this as well.
The official Apple leather case for the iPhone is perfection for what I want. Unfortunately, that's one area that Samsung doesn't seem willing to take design queues from. I wouldn't mind paying 40/50 bucks if its THE only case id want/need.

Currently choosing between Galaxy S6 and iPhone 6. As silly as it might sound, a good leather (shell) case is one of my highest priorities.
I broke 3 iPhone 5's until I put the official leather case on it (I always disliked plasticky cases).
It added more grip, and just enough protection from average falls.
Ridiculous really. Choosing a $1000 piece of tech based on a $50 accessory. But that's just how it is.
Hopefully someone knows of something.
They haven't announced the S6 case yet but I have always been happy with with Vajacases - if you are willing to drop some extra cash. Here's one of the options for the S5: http://www.vajacases.com/galaxy-s5-leather-cases/premium-leather-grip
Edit: I see you mentioned Vaja is not making an S6 case. What is your source? It usually takes them a few months before the new models are ready.
There actually was a thread on this subject until recently, but when trying to find it now, I just realized it has inexplicably been deleted. Had a few good examples in it, but they're obviously not reachable now. I'll post the link here below in case the thread turns up again.

I contacted Vaja through their website back in April and they told me that it was under development. When I checked in last week, they said that a case for the S6 "is not currently being planned for production. We planned to develop a line in the past but I am afraid right now the project has been cancelled."
Whether that means it may show up later, who knows, but for now we're out of luck. Boo.
Yeah, no clue either why the other thread disappeared. It led me to a couple of versions of Apple-esque leather Galaxy S6 cases on eBay.
This one without a plastic fill in the camera/HRM cutout is the one that I already bought in dark blue for my black S6. In short:
Top and bottom are left uncovered
Fit is pretty good, no looseness anywhere really
The power + volume down buttons are both properly clicky
The volume up is pretty mushy, but not too bad
No interference with headphone jack or bottom USB port
The width of the case means that the camera module no longer touches the surface when laid on its back
It does NOT, however, appear to have any lift on the front so your screen will touch the surface when laid facedown
The last item was probably so that swiping in from the edge of the screen is still quite comfortable
Overall I'm pleased enough with the quality and feel of the PU leather cases that I might end up also trying out this slightly different version with plastic fill for the camera/HRM cutout . I'm not sure if it's unclear photos but it looks like this version has full coverage around at least the top of the bottom?
Anyhow, the one that I have feels a lot like the Apple Leather case I've tried out on iPhone 6, which is exactly what I was looking for.

Wow, thank you so much. The "more expensive one" is exactly what I am looking for. No cutouts on the side or anything. Looks perfect. Out of curiosity, how long did shipping take? I have the worst luck with that kind of thing, and it looks like it ships out of China.
Also, since you have the dark blue/black S6, can you throw up a few images for me?
I just ordered one of each... hopefully they arrive before S7....
Looks like one of these would work. Thanks for the tip.

Yeah, the buttons on the second cases I linked in my post look like they'll have better buttons. On mine it's like... slits on each end of the button section.
Shipping was surprisingly fast for me. I think I wanted like... just under two weeks? I was quoted a shipment time like 30+ days from purchase (which is insane), so I was pleasantly surprised when it showed up in normal China --> US shipment time.
If I can get a few minutes to myself at home tonight I'll try and snap a few choice pics of the dark blue on my black S6.
Though it's not without its tradeoffs, I think you'll be more than pleased with your order

I found a high end solution for you guys as well. Reviews on Bouletta from the Sony forums talk about them being some of the highest quality leather cases on the market.

I know exactly what you mean. Originally I wanted an Xperia Z3, but there are literally no cases available without massive side cut-outs. The Z3 one is borderline ridiculous: http://www.bouletta.com/index.php?id_product=103&controller=product
The Galaxy S6 one isn't too bad. Not as good as the standard Apple one though unfortunately =\
I have the second case linked from ebay earlier. It is nowhere near leather feeling. I would say it feels more like a smoothed out velvet than anything. Also, the case does not really offer any protection for the front. It might stick out 1mm past the screen. Overall it is an okay case for the price, but if anyone wants a "leather" feel to a case, this is not the one for you. The buttons are not that great either. You lose most of the tactility from the keys with the case. I imagine over time they will break in and feel better, but after a week of use it doesn't feel great, but doesn't feel as bad as it did at first.

Am I missing something? I can't seem to find a price/how to buy? Is it a non-US site?. Also, the brown case looks grayish, no? (I'm legit color blind though, so that could just be my broken eyes)
Hey that bouletta case looks really nice. However, is the thickness of the back of the case enough so that the camera doesn't touch the surface the phone is placed on? I've seen many posts of people saying how they cracked the camera lenses after just putting the s6 on its back like on a table or something similar.
Thanks

ARRIVED!!
This one came in today : http://www.ebay.com/itm/Luxury-Orig...Domain_0&var=570673785727&hash=item3f4af29e66
Gotta say... i'm insanely impressed. I can't imagine getting much closer to the official Apple Leather case than this. Sure, there is virtually no drop protection, but that's not what I'm into. Just need to keep it scratch free and get that camera bump evened out. I have attached some pics.
Biggest problem for most people will be lack of lip around the screen. It's pretty much flush with the aluminum on the device. I actually prefer that since I never ever place my device face down... so i'm able to still feel the slight curve to the glass.
The buttons are a little stiff right now - but I'm going to chalk that up to material. It'd be awesome if they wear in over time, but not a big deal if they don't. I'm thrilled with this thing for 8 bucks... could easily sell for 30 in US retail stores.
I also got the 5 dollar version and it's not nearly as nice. That two dollars makes all the difference in the world apparently.

Thanks for the pictures. It looks to be a little off around the bottom of the phone. Is it just the angle of the picture or is that the case?
I had purchased something like this for an iPhone 6 plus that I had and it just slightly didn't fit the phone. The cut out for the camera was off were it wouldn't sit flush with the back of the phone. I ended up just biting the bullet and paying the 50 odd bucks for the apple one. It would be nice if there was a decent quality real leather option, even if the price was higher. I guess we'll just have to wait and see. Again thanks for the picture.
