framework-res.apk & services.jar - Nexus One Themes and Apps

Can anyone offer some insight on the SDK emulator? I'm trying to test out a new framework-res.apk/services.jar for white notification/clock text on froyo. trying to push it to an AVD(emulator) but getting errors:
"C:\Users\pwner>adb push C:\Users\pwner\Desktop\Theme\framework-res.apk /system/framework/framework-res.apk
failed to copy 'C:\Users\pwner\Desktop\Theme\framework-res.apk' to '/system/framework/framework-res.apk': Out of memory"
can't find anything about this on the web. sorry, know it's a noob question but i'm very much so looking forward to having a black theme back on my nexus + froyo. i'm also going to be developing my own themed* ROM which depends on white text.
any help would be greatly appreciated.

edit: using an emulator because i don't want to blow up my phone
edit2: yes, i've reviewed the documentation here: http://developer.android.com/guide/developing/tools/emulator.html

you ever figure this out? seems there is a way to change the clock color on froyo now, but i'm clueless.

yeah totally thanks to all the help to everyone who replied. LOL. NOT.
no, i never did. i quit screwing with the emulator.
there is a way yes, BUT, we need a fully deodexed froyo rom first. paul over at modaco has deodexed the build but hasn't released the deodex pack for the kitchen. once he does, i'll be building/releasing a theme. till then. we are fuct

Did you get this worked out? I haven't had much time over the last 36 hours but may be able to assist now since I've done it a few times.
Although I don't know much about using an emulator, I always use a handset.
So, if you think I can help, either with your patching or your future rom, let me know.

Hey thanks for the advice guys! Well, I've actually gotten a ported Kspec theme set up on my phone right now. Only problem is that I just pushed the framework and launcher and apps to my phone using adb push. so no update.zip
So what I could really use some advice on would be:
1. Setting up my PC for signing apps that I modify. I use windows 7 though. none of the articles about setting up signing seem to pretain to me, including stericsons guide
2. Creating update.zip files to flash(sure i can find more info on this in the forum but with out signing ability not too much point right now).
3. using apktool to decompile apps to edit XML files. this is so i can change the text on the music app's text color to white(so now playing shows up properly in the notification bar) along with other apps I use so I can theme and change font colors such as touteir, etc.
other than that, I'll be working on images to get my custom rom out! This is what I have on my phone ATM:
PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS IS NOT MY THEME. just ported it from brendank's kspec monster theme. i hope he wont mind that i'm sharing screenies of what i'm using on my phone here, and i have no intention on releasing his theme at all...i am using it as a temp theme so i don't go insane with all the white on the phone till i make my theme. anyways, screen shots attached.
edit:
just for anyone who cares, my theme will be very similar to the kspec monster theme(all black, with transparencies), but will have blue high lights to match the blue on the clock on my home screen.

Okay, there's a fair bit to answer there so perhaps we just take it one step at a time...
Windows 7 is not a problem. You will need to install the Android SDK and the included USB drivers. Once you've done this test that your phone can connect to your computer by USB, if not you'll need to diagnose that (that's a search).
You need the JRE (Jave Runtime Environment). You probably have this, type java.exe at a command prompt to make sure it exists, if not then download and install (any Windows version).
The you need to check that adb (Android Device Bridge) is working. Drop to a command prompt and go your SDK/tools dir and type adb devices with your phone plugged in via USB. It should display the serial number of your connected phone. If it does not then you need to diagnose your adb problems (that's a search).
The you need to autosign (search this forum) and apktool (search google), these will allow you to decompile/compile/sign apks and also sign update.zips.
Once you have all of that and you're familiar with how it basically works then post back here with some of your experiences and we'll take it to the next step.
Please also look in the Chef's Central sub-forum, there's lot's of helpful information (including many of the required tools) in there.

I love the Notification bar on that theme... You think I could get the string for that or maybe the theme to extract the framework-res.apk and services.jar?

Optimized Rosie.apk for KingxK 2.3 Sense Rom

Here is an optimized Rosie.apk for King's Hero 2.3. I used the theme from Black Eclair on the Hero forum and then used OptiPNG to reduce the size of the .PNG files, Used 7-zip to condense the file, signed it and then used Zipalign to correct the positioning. It's a little tedious but it reduces the footprint of the application from 4.5 megs down to around 900k. There are a number of ways to install this, but I would suggest the following:
First, rename the file from Rosie.zip to Rosie.apk
then connect your phone to your computer and type the following with ADB:
ADB push <directory>\Rosie.apk /system/app/
after that, you can just reboot your phone and you will be good to go.
A couple things about this -- Make sure that your wallpaper is not one of the stock wallpapers from the gallery because I have removed most of them. If you use the wallpaper gallery, it will FC on any of the wallpapers that are shown as a black square. Other than that, you should have a noticeable difference in the speed of your UI.
Red.
Gonna test it...
Now making backups...
//EDIT: It's working nice and smooth. I think I'm gonna keep the Hero ROM.
What makes you people believe that removing things counts as optimization? That's akin to calling DOS an optimization of window 98 (which some people would say is true, actually...).
If you're going to trade wallpapers for size, the replace them with single-pixel black pngs/jpgs, you use a lot less space and avoid the fc's caused by missing wallpapers.

I did not benchmark it because i do not know how, but i kinda of notice a speed boost

I followed Coolbho's method on an earlier version of JacHero. However, I did not know that he had written a script for the same proceedure, so I did it by hand. I used the highest setting on OptiPNG. As far as wasting my time, nothing is a waste if it was done in good cause.
Jubeh, I respect your work highly, and I also will take your suggestion to change out the wallpapers for 1 pixel png files. However, referring to me as "you people" and your negative attitude can go elsewhere. Many people, especially developers, seem to enjoy flaming people who are trying to help. Your insecurities will be your downfall.
Red.
I agree 100%. Red simply posted an update to a current rom that he and others might find useful for the time being. Thats it.
If you dont like the way he did it, or know a better way to do so, Do it your way. There is just no need for the influx of sarcastic, insecure and negative comments on these boards.
Even though there was an easier way for Red to accomplish this, I still appreciate the effort, thats what these boards are supposed to be here for. Not the constant bickering, insults and complaints that constantly plague these boards.

[Skins] HTC_IME High/Low Res v27 custom skin generator online! Updated Sep. 7th!

The reason I've been slower at posting requests lately is about to come clear!
I have created an "online kitchen" of sorts for creating custom skinned, signed, HTC_IME high and low res apk files. This means you guys can very easily create your own skins and customize the ones I've created!
What is this?
A website you can visit on your computer or directly from your phone that will let you a> create a custom skinned keyboard based off of any of the images currently in the library (various colored keys, backgrounds, etc) with whatever text color you want and b> customize existing "skins" (will be known as "presets") however your heats desire.
Currently, it should be considered very beta. All the features that are here should be working 100%.
Why beta, that sounds scary?
It's beta for a couple of reasons, 1 because it's currently UGLY as sin (concentrated on features and back end first) and 2 because I'm actively working on it which means it could break at any time.
What is the point of this?
Besides the fact that you can now customize the hell out of the way your keyboard looks, it drastically reduces the amount of work I have to do in the future. Currently, i'm uploading 46 pre-themed apk files for every single update. While this isn't really a big deal since I automated the process, it slows down how quickly I can put up updates. With this new method, all I have to do is upload the original unthemed keyboard apk and classes.dex for each new version and my work is done!
Everything else:
If you select a preset, you will still be asked to choose each portion of the keyboard (background, buttons, text color etc). The image with the yellow border around it (you'll see what I mean) is the default "piece" for the preset.
One last thing, depending on server load it could take anywhere from 30 seconds to 5 minutes to generate the keyboard. Most of the time I suspect it will be < 1 minute tho.
I don't mind if you use this to generate a keyboard and include it with something (theme/morph) or post it somewhere, just give due credit
URL for HIGH RES online kitchen: now offline, sorry
URL for LOW RES online kitchen: now offline, sorry
Current feature list / changelog:
Start from a "preset" (any of my current themes) and change any component of it.
Choose any of my current backgrounds
Choose any of my current primary/function key styles
Choose any of my current "symbol sets"
Choose any of my current space bar logo/images
Upload your own spacebar logo
Choose any color text for letters and alternate characters
Built in bug reporting/feature requests (for new image sets, for example)
Choose any color for background image
Preview keyboard before generating it
Option to see/reuse all skins you have generated
Option to see/reuse last 25 skins anyone has generated
Choose any color for symbol sets
Added lowres kitchen
Added option to choose between 1.5 only and 1.6+ low res versions in low res kitchen.
Added v25 froyo version.
Added all v26 versions to kitchen!
Added all v27 versions to kitchen!
Added v27-froyo lowres version to kitchen!
New option: Create your own primary/function keys is FINALLY here!
Pre-themed/Pre-built skinned keyboards.
Custom skins for Jonasl's HTC_IME high res.
These are signed with the exact same certificate that jonasl uses so if you can install his, you can install these and go back and forth with no problem.
These are no longer flashable update.zip files, all you need to do is download the zip file, extract the HTC_IME_hi.apk to your sd card and install with a file manager (linda, or something that supports reinstalling for future installs).
Special note, if you have not already installed v22 or higher, I highly suggest you read Jonasl's thread here for important information regarding this keyboard. You will need to re-enable and completely reconfigure this keyboard after installing (only if you haven't already done v22+).
One last note, there is a new hi res Clicker.apk available too. I have not included it in these downloads, you will need to get that from the official HTC_IME Mod download if you haven't already! Update: or get it here -> Clicker_hi.zip
v24 links removed because v25 is now available in the kitchen, screenshots represent some of the many themes you can create there!
Thankyou so much all working perfectly !
Oh thanks for this, I definetly don't like Metamorph - so this was a life saver. Well not really a life saver, more like a life enhancer lol..
Great job thanks .
I know this is an htc forum but is there any way you can throw an update.zip of v18 for us droid users? The candidate bar is broken on v19 for droid but it worked on 18... if you can do it would you make it the black with white text theme? This would be much appreciated! Keep up the great work!

Sure thing, I don't want to maintain to many old versions going forward, but this one is the most frequently downloaded one, and it sounds like Jonasl isn't going to get us a new version real soon (i could be mistaken tho).

I'm still having problems with installing the themes...I tried all 3 methods you posted, everything installed with no problems or errors...however, when I go to a text screen (sms, for example) I click on the input area and the keyboard just doesn't pop up at all, nothing. Any explanation for this? I don't understand why I can't get this to install properly. I'm convinced it has to do with my rom, jrummy's desire remix on koush's cyanogenmod

It must. Have you been able to install the un-themed keyboard from Jonasl? If that is the case, I have absolutely no idea why these wouldn't work. They are identical to the APKs he produces just with my theme changes.
These themed versions work like a charm on stock N1.
I extracted the APK, installed with ASTRO. Just to be safe, I uninstalled previous version.

Which install method did you try????
For stock I would recommend option 3 with astro file manager or similar.
I used option 3 with astro go to choose input method and it only gives me android keyboard option ? rebooted phone too just to make sure .
Thanks bro for the update.zip. I had almost given up on flashing the penguins skin as I could not get MM to do it no matter what I tried. Anyway this method worked. Have the keyboard themed with penguins.
quick question: if I install a new ROM and wipe data prior to that will I have to apply this again? If so can I do this directly without installing the orginal HTC keyboard? Thanks again.

I *think* either on stock firmware and/or first time you run it you have to actually enable it first. Try going to settings, language and keyboard, and see if you have touch input that you can either check mark to enable or go into for settings, then try to set it as your input type.

Yes you will have to apply it again, and yes you can go straight to my pre-themed keyboards (by flashing, pushing, installing, however you want!).
that did it thanks very much

Flipping Animations for Us too?!

I was browsing around and found this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=813162
and tried pushing and pulling the anim folder and all worked great, except everything!
the flip animations worked, but every app FC'ed.
so i basically only saw the flipping during the fc screens!
looks great, but doesn't work.
i have NO CLUE how to make it work.
what needs done to the files to get it to work?
and i MAY need the stock anim folder from our phone please!
by MAY i mean i do badly!
thanks!
:scooter:
Back when I was running Zen-ROM I was using Envynet's Elegant Envy theme, seen here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=768540
It had very similar animations to what I saw in the video...hopefully you can pull something from that.
i'm going to look into that.
thank you very much
Just wanted to say first time I pulled com.htc.resources.apk and pushed to that (made a backup before I modified) so after I pushed it nothing happened..
Then I pulled framework-res.apk and ploped the anim files in that.
Well now I get some really cool flip style transitions on my status bar up top, but no flip clock... Or is this what it's about? BTW, I got NO fc's on this either. If you want the framework-res.apk file, i'll post it.
Either way at least the flip style status bar will make a great addition to my roms
i could only get the ones from the dark to actually work.
all others wouldn't unzip.
so i'm giving them a go now.
i'll keep you posted.
sure, let me have what you got.
i'll toy around with them a little too.
thanks
so, the aria dark framework-res didn't work.
same thing.
force closes, but they flip!
by the way,
i'm using cm6 with adw launcher.
andro green theme.
i'm going to try LP instead of adw.
I believe envynet has did this before with his Envy Aria theme as I remember the flipping animations when i used that rom and his theme.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=768540
i tried those from Envy.
no avail.
still the same FC's as before.

Here's my framework-res.apk file:
http://www.mediafire.com/?1xdbf9w9308cwe2
All I did was pull the original from my phone, merge the anim directories with the file you provided and pushed back and voila! flips animations (between screens)
....
I just noticed you said your using cm6...
Well, I guess I better warn you.
I am using HTC Stock 2.1(base). And I am on Cellular South not Sprint, so definitely make a backup of your current framework-res.apk file before pushing this one.. dunno if it will work or not but hope so.
Thanks Hex:
Still gettting FC's.
i'm guessing it doesnt like AOSP.
i haven't had any luck with anything i've come across.
but they have ALL been from sense based roms. i think ....
i think i'm going to need some help on this.
anybody?!
Man this would be cool
it looks great,but ....
i can only see it on the FC screens!
Sounds to me like the xmls in that anim folder have settings pointing to various Sense related stuff (as I am finding out the hard way on my minimalist rom atm)
What you would need to do is decompile the xmls from cm6, and the xmls from the flipping anim folder and go through one by one merging just the flip code related to the animations and remove any sense related links... Which if I remember correctly are going to be addresses AND memory pages. This may prove to be quite tough to decipher.
Yeah I just think the .zip you found doesnt like aosp. I got it to work on my sense rom thanks to Hex. Now I like the animations.
Thanks man, always glad to help!
and how do i edit / decomplile these?
point me in the right direction, and i'm on it.
i want this to happen.
i'll probably hate it after a while, but i keep getting teased with the fc screens.
so for now, i want it!
what do i use to view xmls to edit them?
bump this up for a little help?
Shoot man, mah bad. I was meaning to help you.
#1 you need apktool:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=640592
This decompiles apks. I have never used it so... ymmv, but I have heard this is the best tool to do so.
Alternatively you can use xmlprint:http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=514412
This decompiles apks to text files, however it does it 1 by 1 and does not re-compile them into native bytecode, however at the same time since it's just one folder you may prefer this to apktool for decoding (but you still need apk tool to recompile them)
For CM6, instead of decompiling all of them, it may be better to just go grab the source for CM6. You can get that here:http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/index.php?title=Compile_CyanogenMod_for_Hero_CDMA
This wiki also gives a howto for compiling the code afterwards. The upside is you can tweak CM6 to your liking. The downside is... compiling the whole thing.
If you find a fast easy way of compiling just the files you need, you can just merge them with your current cm6 install.
DO A NANDROID FIRST SO IF YOU MESS IT UP YOU CAN GO BACK!!!!!
Hope this helps man!

Okay, found the dump, started boggling around the files.
S-Launcher2
needs some SE framework bits, and to be placed in /system (shares config files with the stock Launcher). Differences are the following:
- Added favorites menu
- Added settings icon next to the Google search bar on top
- The add widget screen has been a bit finetuned, now you can select default screen by the arrows under the screens
So, after fiddling and getting it to run, the following happened:
- Apps menu can not be opened (some kind of a static library problem, the needed file libark2.so gets the menu killed)
- Favorites part won't work
MediaPlayers
After doing some static library magic, it's starting, but then freezes (no "FC or wait" message until touch)
Visualiser
I did not try anything with it
What worth checking out was done

Yes, the favorites app is what I meant, but it's not a separate app - there's a button next to the "Apps" one in the Launcher, that goes to Favorites, but it's not working either (same Ark2 library stuff).
I'll upload them as soon as I get an all-in-one package ready - currently all the files are scattered around, fixed and unfixed versions, etc.
Don't use CWM then, but ADB to remount /system and write directly to it through USB!
Favourites is a separate app isn't it? Ive linked in the Favorites.apk i found in the sys dump
But anyways nice work so far
and i was originally pushing the apk's in with root explorer but i will try adb thanks
Thanks fonix232 for your work!
any progress here ? or is it a stopped project ?
I really like the idea thanks for the work so far
if you need a hand, just say. if you want a quick sign and zip-align of an app from the dump i can do that, also i can port the theme quite quickly if you aren't already doing that?

ICS ShapeWriter...

I know not everyone prefers ShapeWriter, not sure why it's the best keyboard out there, but with all the ICS stuff and themeing, here's a ICS themed ShapeWriter Keyboard.
ps-if anyone knows how to change the tracer color, please let me know. I've asked, pm'd, googled, all with no luck.

just like swipe. its in the libshapewriter.so file. only way to edit it is to use a hex editor. use this as a guild http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1162558
you will need to figure out what the HEX code for the stock color and find it in the .so
OK. So any help on finding that color in Hex Editor? I knew it was in the .so file but don't know the location.

you would have to decompile it and see what the hex code is used for the color then search the .so for it.
its easier in linux. i will see what i come up with then i am home tonight.

Thanks. I appreciate it. No worries if nothing happens.
I thought I was the only person alive that still uses shapewriter. Is there any way to remove the background image? It's a bit distracting

Check this out. It's a few replies in. If you want a certain color or background or whatever, I could probably do something for ya.
After I posted that, I did a little playing around.. Made an orange and black one to go with my orange MIUI 4.0 theme
Got it. I posted on other thread.
Shapewriter bug
HI
long time shapewriter user - recently upgraded to ICS (BCM on the desire)
did a restore of shapewriter from a titanium backup of it i had (this was from CM7 ie gingerbread). Works perfectly but for one problem: Whenever i switch to the number keyboard it duplicates the last digit when i switch back to the alpha keyboard.
Any ideas how to fix or workaround?
Presume the "data" part of the titanium restore is the bit that cointain info on my writing style etc so would be up to 2 years worth of learned data that i would rather not have to wipe and relearn. Maybe the app isnt as clever as this. Im not sure?
I think you might be able to do a fresh install and then copy over the library files. Once I get to a computer I'll look into it.

Shaspewriter isnt available on the market/play any more i know that there are modified variants out there but i'm not so comfortable getting it from a lesser source do to the security/easy ability to capture all keyboard input - do i need a special installer file etc or will the data stored by titanium backup suffice. Not sure if it has the apk file.
Any help appreciated.
I have a galaxy note and am still using shapewriter as it is STILL the best tracing keyboard out there. BUT unfortunately it appears on the note in a compacted form, only taking up 2/3 of the width of the screen. Does anyone know if there is a version that would adapt to any screen size??
ICS Shapewriter [Now with xhdpi support!]
Here is a nice ICS themed shapewriter. It also has support for hi res devices.
