Is cognition worth rooting?

Hey guys,
I am coming from a G1 which I got from craigslist that I did not think twice about rooting. Now, I bought my captivate brand new and am over all pleased. The thing that drives me crazy is I would flash my g1 constantly. I liked the tinkering aspect. My question is at this point, are the custom roms out for the captivate worth rooting?
Keep in mind, I really do not notice lag on my phone and the GPS works fine for what I use it for. I also use the sideload wonder machine to load non market apps.
If you like to tweak - Designgears and others are pushing ROM builds like crazy.
Personally I will probably never run the phone stock again.

Right on, looks likes I am going to root my phone when i get home and see what I can load up. Thanks.
If you are happy with your phone and it does what you need it to do there is no reason to do anything. Look at what the custom ROMs have to offer and if there is anything you really think you would miss not having.
I'm personally running Con 2.2beta4 and have been running what dg has been putting out since SRE 1.2 or so, but I'm the kind of person who likes to tinker

Well, that's up to you, if you're pleased with your current setup, there's no need to.
Keep in mind stock rom with no lag fix gave me 900 on quadrant..
i9000 jg8 eclair rom (not recommanded unless you have a good reason for that specific rom) with reoriented kernel gave me 2200, and now, with cognition beta 4 I get about 1900 with lag fix, but it feels fast enough for me
and there's awesome flash support.
Stock setup is not using half of the potential of this phone if you ask me,
but if you're happy with it there's no need to risk it, you can always
brick it by accident if you flash (even though I flashed it a lot and unbricked it too many times but seems like some people managed to brick it completely..)
Unlike most of you guys I don't have a warranty, I'm living outside the u.s so I can't just go to at&t store and I paid for this phone
more than 650$ in cash and I still take the risk and flash it, I admit, I'm addicted.
So, I went ahead and rooted my phone and I have loaded a few roms already. Now I remember why I like android phones so much, heh.
quadrant doesnt matter.
if you like customization i say root. if you are in the know, then you should definitely root and customize

I ended up at the stock firmware rooted, OCLF (honestly, besides the benchmarks, the phone does seem to be less laggy), stock lock screen and minus all of the ATT bloatware.
I feel silly for not rooting my phone before because this is exactly how I wish the phone was from the get go.

[Q] What ROM will make my Charge work like I need!?

I'm just so effin fustrated cause this crap is getting old. ALL I WANT IS A PHONE THAT DOES WHAT IS SAYS! Stock was crap, so I rooted. Now the Roms I've tried are way above what stock was. I'm gratefull to all the Devs that make this all possible. I'm in no way upset with all their hard work. They've worked hard to improve the crappy stock ROMs. Here's a list of my probs...and this is common with ALL ROMS, stock, custom, bloated, debloated, odexed, deodexed, w/ voodoo, w/out voodoo. most of my probs are with the net.
4g freezes...I get constant hiccups when I need the net the most. I just want it to work all the time..jebus!
HotSpot freezes...this is caused by the problem above. Now I pay for hot spot and use the App, and since rooted I use WiFi tether. Still same prob. My PC loads pages fast and DL quickly, then all of a sudden...nothing. I have to cycle Airplane mode. This is just getting old already...just work like it does in the damn commercials!
SiriusXM....I love listening to it. I listen in the car, but when I have a 4G hicupp, music is gone...cycle airplane mode...or restart cause the App gets frozen as well. The app works by DL about 5 mins of airplay at a time...I get stops and freezes when it does that too.
Madden 12 not smooth...why have a game compatable with a phone that doesn't work properly? BS...
Same with Skype...never works like it should.
I just want my phone, apps, and internet to work when I need it. IS that too much to ask? I can never catch a break. Right now I'm on HumbleComb 4.0. So far this is the best ROM I've had. Still have same probs, but they happen fewer than with other ROMS...
I never tired Darkcharge cause it didn't have the toolbox. Now that it does I might try it. Should I? Or should I wait for the new 2.3.5 that P3 has been saying is the best Stock ROM beating out MotoBionic, and HTC Tbolt?
Anyone else have all these issues? Am I too picky? Just wanted to vent my frustration and see if other experience the same.
Check your PM.
sucks to hear you're having these problems but a lot of them are hardware/software related an not fixable as of yet, there is a huge issue with data connectivity on the Charge which seems to be the huge deal and the GB leaks are full of bugs (and not officially supported yet which is why there's problems with apps/games on GB)... the only thing I could suggest is Imnuts Infinity rom, I had maybe 1 little issue the whole time I ran it which I unfortunately can't say about the other roms
blazing through on my 4G Droid Charge
The best luck I've had is with the ep1w leak that I manually de-bloated, and zipalign using the ron toolbox. Also installed immuts repacked 2.3.5 voodoo kernal. Runs smooth. I can't remember my last force close or restart since I've been on this set up. Also using launcher pro plus
Sent from my SCH-I510 using XDA App
Thanks for the replys...I will try what has been suggested... still I hope when we finally get an official update(2.3.5)...and the ROMs that follow that..

TB to Charge - Advice Wanted

Because of the many issues with the TB, VZW has swapped out a charge as a replacement for my thunderbolt. Received the charge yesterday afternoon and I have already replaced the ROM using Odin with the ep1w which appears to be a stock rooted gingerbread rom.
I looked over the custom ROMs but since I've been with HTC phones for years they look a bit foreign to me and I don't know which one is which, what the differences are nor do I have a clue what "voodoo" is that I keep reading about.
I like a ROM that is clean looking (looked at Darkslide and the look of it made me cringe), doesn't have tons of added in features that break the basic services. I expect to learn more as I spend time in these forums now but for now I would like to get this phone up to speed without bricking or breaking it.
All advice and help will be read, considered and appreciated.

Here is the official page of Voodoo.
It is basically a tweak, that improve the color, sound and lag fix for Galaxy S phones, that's including Droid Charge as they are using the same processor.
You might want to check out GummyCharged ROMs, they look like vanilla stock Android. There are two versions, Froyo (FE) and Gingerbread (GBE).
There are also some other ROMs on other forums, that I'm not allowed to post the link here, google it =)
Didn't look like the link came through - is this what you were going to link?

Yup, thanks!
For rom recommendations I say try out infinity or gummy gbe. Both are gingerbread and supposedly good, though I haven't tried gummy gbe because infinity is great, both are available over at rootzwiki
Voodoo is EXT4 which many HTC's have that support.
I am using gummy charged gbe and I like it a lot. The status bar will force close ever now and then (pretty rare and it happens when you charge to 100% battery) but other then that it is smooth. Here is the rom. http://rootzwiki.com/showthread.php?6634-ROM-EP1W-CWM-GummyCharged-GBE-2.0-9-28-2011&
I would also apply supercharger tweaks. http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&sour...K0jfQLLLQ&sig2=MdzoMAhAadsmDvMvAmreiQ&cad=rja Download that and then download busybox installer, install version 1.18.2 and reboot. Then you will need script manager, open the script you downloaded and make sure you check "run as root." Follow the prompts and do option 12 for a HUGE improvement.
If you want a clean look then check out the theme I ported over from an HTC phone. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1282585
And! Welcome to the Droid Charge forums, I hope you enjoy your new phone .
Thanks or the help and advice. I did put up Infinity rom and it seems pretty nice. No issues so far but its only been since last night.
As for gummycharge, the minute you mention fc's (even if only occasionally) and also when charged to 100 percent, you lose me. That's what I'm trying to get away from.
As for the other stuff, I'll take a look at it in the next few days. I want to live with each change so I know where I'm at before I push something else to this phone. Makes it a lot easier to troubleshoot if a problem arises. When you dump too much stuff on the phone all at the same time and something goes wrong you don't really have a starting point to work from in term of what is causing the issue.

Constant Random Reboots

I am getting really frustrated with my wife's Nexus S. Currently it has ICS with glados kernel, but the problem persists no matter what rom/kernel combo I put on it, the phone always randomly reboots. It has been doing this for months now. It will be sitting on the bed and we'll just see the boot animation, it turns right back on so only has a few seconds of down time but it does it CONSTANTLY, every couple of hours.
Is it possible the phone has something physically wrong? What can I look into? I'm bout ready to unroot and warranty exchange. I run the app "aLogcat" on it, but that doesn't really answer much *probably because it's a bit over my head* When I set it to Fatal level logging, nothing really even shows up. I can post the log cat result if anyone would care to look at it for me
Have you tried raising voltages??
Are you using any oc settings or live oc?
I haven't messed with anything related to processors since I had a G2 lol. Do I just use Set CPU? I've never really dredged into that subject because I don't know what voltages to set it to, etc. Can logcat help confirm that could be the issue? The only thing I can really interpret from it is that winamp is having Wifi issues... but I don't even have wifi activated in the app.
I see these posts all the time and I'm sorry I picked you to harass.

DON'T MOD YOUR WIFE'S/GIRLFRIEND'S/FRIEND'S/ANYONE'S PHONE!
Seriously, they don't care about overclocking, undervolting, cool mods or whatever as much as they care that the phone turns on, makes calls and doesn't reboot. And if they really do care you need to tell them to do it themselves.
/rant
Also reboots are annoying and I hope you are able to get yours sorted out.

Wow, I didn't realize that you knew my wife. She had a rooted G1 when I met her, and has been using Cyanogenmod since CM5, with a break while she had a vibrant because it doesn't have CM. You are extremely offensive to women, and you are a sexist, close-minded neanderthal.
She does lots of things with her phone, and hates it stock. She and I are both stumped about the issue so *I* posted up. I'm not some retard that modded my casual girlfriend's phone and screwed it up on her.

Yeah it's really frustrating, at least it comes right back up. My Evo 3D needs a battery pull when it happens because it locks up on the bootanim
I may look into newer ICS builds, but like I said this is across all rom's/kernels
Can SetCPU help even if I'm not sure the exact voltages to play with? I've just always been against Profiles running so I haven't used it in quite a while. Any ideas to try out?
I think that you should go back to a factory set with GB just to check that the hardware is fine...
I'll try that probably tomorrow. Going to drive her nuts stock though haha. I know her vibrant GPS issues ended up being hardware

See I knew I was going to say it to the wrong person. I'm not sexist it's just that so many people think it's a good idea to mod someone else's stuff and usually what I read on here is "my gf". I'm actually quite sure that tons of users on here are women either intentionally trying to hide there gender or use a name that is neutral. Which is sad if they have been made to feel that is necessary. Anyway if your wife actually does some flashing, modding, or whatever then I apologize to you. However, my point still stands for the rest of users that mod other people's phones. Just don't do it!
Didn't mean to go off on ya, but we're definitely not that case Our whole house is full of modded stuff, Modded Wii, PSP, Anything android, lots of *geek* mods to my car, etc. I've swayed her this way but she already had it in her to begin with
But yes, I agree with you. I have people coming to me ALL the time to root/mod/whatever their phones and I used to help out a lot, but now I debrief them on what it all means and most back out of it because it isn't relevant to them. And whoever I do help I treat it more like a learning experience and teach them how to maintain it on a basic level without me *changing roms, etc* and don't help people unless they're willing to understand it. Pretty good system I think lol
I'm also having random reboots on the Nexus S that I got just recently. I ran a 100% stock unrooted rom for about a day and no reboots, but I primarily got the nexus for cm7 so I had to go back. Sure enough, within about 12 hours of rooting and flashing, got another reboot. Tried many different roms/kernels and underclocking/overclocking. Let me know if you find a solution.
likewise, if ya beat me to it
Anyone know what voltages to try out? I'm in the process of booting up into GummyNexus, and to test it out I flashed this too:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1236779
Anyone heard of the Adrenalin Shot? Found it while digging into the Vibrant 4G forums. Universal flash, says it can even help an Evo 3D's 3D Picture quality, but general snappyness. This Nexus S is running crazy fast/good at the moment, but not sure if thats just because its a fresh flash with no apps loaded yet.
Try Matr1x v14.0!!!
Sent from my Nexus S using XDA App
I purchased a third party battery and have been using it for nearly a week without any reboots after having a reboot nearly everyday with the stock battery. Although it doesn't make much logical sense, a different battery seems to have fixed the issue
The battery: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005DC2MF6/ref=oh_o00_s00_i01_details
Running Gummy Nexus I haven't seen any reboots VERY stable rom, highly recommended. I also flashed the Universal Adrenaline Shot. I found it hidden in the Galaxy S 4G threads but it's got a specific GS4G version, then a universal that worked great. Very snappy

USB Debugging not functioning.

Hello guys, this is my first post so hi there. First of all I lurked this site for quite sometime but finally a decent need to make a account arose. I rooted my phone, Galaxy S 4G obviously, with intentions to put a custom ROM on there. I couldn't tell you which ROM it was as I forgot. But one of the higher rated ones available for this model. I was 2.2 at the time. I mistakenly flashed it to the official 2.3 ROM (from Samsung) and at first there were no issues. Until I realized I needed to flash it again because Superuser wouldn't work. Okay no issue. I go and turn USB debugging on so I can root it. I plug the phone it my computer via USB and the debugging icon doesn't show up. I tried unplugging and replugging it while turning the setting off and on. I don't know what to do. Stock ROM is pretty buggy on here. Any help is appreciated.
If your on GB the debug icon doesn't show in the status bar. If you turn it on from the phone rest assured it's on.
I wanna believe that. But when I used...Superoneclick I think the rooting didn't work. I'll have another go at it however.
EDIT: Well, my phone didn't even recognize my phone plugged in however I could turn on USB storage...could be apart of it.
I haven't used super one click in a while but I'm pretty sure if you are trying to root GB you have to use hte most recent version of SOC. If that doesn't work you can always flash this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1380331through heimdell. Or flash one of honks kernels through odin.
I'm rooting my phone as we speak, and I uninstalled superuser because I was getting pissed off how slow my phone was. Is there any good ROMS for this phone that increases performance?
Yeah theres a bunch of good ones in the dev section. I like valhalla black ice edition. Super smooth, great battery life. Just look over there you won't be dissapointed.

Yea! For example there's Octane 3.0, Valhalla, Valhalla Black Edition, ICBINB, and AOSP style. Go try them and see which one you like.

I have my eye on that Valhalla black edition, but a lot of my decision goes into the UI. Black Edition apparently has a decent ICS launcher. Which makes me interested as ICS reminds me a lot of the Windows Phone UI to some extent.
Octane 3.0 looks a lot like ICS as well. Can anybody help me with the pros and cons of each? I need something to discuss while my phone is rooted. It takes forever.
Should I be worried my screen won't turn on in the middle of rooting it?...
Once your rooted and get cwm just take Ihelpers suggestion and try a few ROMS and decide for yourself. It's hard to give someone suggestions about personal preference. I really like IPA's but my best freind prefers Pilsner. You get the idea.
Before I delve to deep in that....It says running rageagainsthecage. Okay cool, my phone vibrates to tell me its done charging, okay cool. The screen won't turn back on. What damage could I do if I pull the battery?
EDIT: went ahead and did it. Did not brick. I honestly didn't know what would happen if I did so don't judge me D: but, I went ahead and tried it again. Got up to the same point, and then my computer stopped reading my phone for a second. My computer recognizes it right now but superoneclick still says waiting for device....
How long have you had it going? I remember it taking alot longer than I thought it should. But that was on froyo. Don't pull the battery unless your absolutely sure it's not working. If that's the case study up on ODIN or heimdell.

I guarantee it froze, I know its not rooted. But gonna try superuser and see what happens. After I rooted on froyo it was really slow until I rebooted.
If it boots up just DL root ckecker from the market. Run it and it will tell you whether it's rooted or not.
Weird, Superuser doesn't autoclose yet it says my device isn't rooted.
No root for you! Seriously look at my 4th post and just go one of those routes(or roots). Take your time and remember to enjoy a nice IPA along the way.
It keeps looping and stops recognizing. Guess I'll use another method to root. I think I might just do that tomorrow. Getting up there into the night.
Any other method of rooting thats simple and reliable(main reason I liked SOC) Also very odd bug where the screen would come on for no reason, just odd.
