Ok, I was an early adopter of this phone bought it the day it came out July 18th. There are a great many things that disappoint me about this phone, main thing being lack of Froyo at the moment. I'm tired of waiting for samsung, I have little faith it will truely resolve my issues which are the following
In order to use wifi I must reboot my phone, this only occurred after the official JH7 was loaded on it through the over the air update that ATT did.
Constantly having lag all the time, and having apps running that I never ever use and dont want such as ATT Navigator, ATT Family Map, etc. I was able to root the phone and get rid of those but it really hasnt helped.
My stereo bluetooth headphones must be paired EVERY single time I want to use them, its not the headphones because they work perfectly with 4 other devices.
Of course the GPS, it sucks for everyone, any of these or all fix that? Samsung seems unwilling.
So maybe I'm wishing too much but I've watched almost every youtube review of the ROMs that are out there and theres a few details that stick out for things that I want in a rom so I'll detail them here and hopefully someone can point me in the right direction as to which one has the best combo.
1. froyo based, I need 2.2 for certain apps
2. I've heard theres different modems that can affect HSPA, I want fastest download and upload.
3. No wild color schemes, I dont like orange or green. I quite like the look of the phone I think samsung did a great job with the touchwiz and I know theres alot of you out there that perfer the "vanilla" versions of Android. I'm not one of those people. I really loved the look of the cognition rom and some of the things it had visually.
4. Overclocking would be nice but not at the expense of battery life, I'm right in the 24-30 hour range just as most are on here, better would be great if possible.
Go to romkitchen.org and build your own there. There are many threads about the advantages of one modem over another, and you can pick pretty much everything yourself. Then search for CLShortfuse's GPS fix and you'll be set.
Don't worry, its extremely easy

24-30 hours of what kind of use? There are a couple roms out there with stock appearance
Cognition
Perception
Precision
Andromeda
Docs
30 hours, you have to consider what you are asking. I want faster dl, no lag, better gps, but I don't want to eat any more battery. It is possible to get 30hrs of light to moderate use. Heavy use will yield 12-18
Andromeda v1.2 is a rom that is pretty vanilla....simple and has the things your looking for. You have to try roms that you think will be what you want.

+2 for Andromeda 1.2.
You can fix all of these if you root the phone. The best ROM out there is the Rom Kitchen (aka "Doc's ROMs") over at romkitchen.org. You can "cook up" your own ROMs using the specifications you want. This is what is so great about the ROM kitchen, especially when compared to the other ROMs like Cognition: you can pick what you want, and don't have to take whatever it was that someone else decided was best. For example, if you want the benefits of rooting but want to keep touchwiz, the ROM kitchen has an option for that. It also lets you pick things like the theme, boot animation, apps, etc. There are 5 captivate modems, and you might just have to experiment to see which one is best. I did this, and it was well worth it. The one that worked best for me was the XXJPP modem. Just load a seperate ROM with each of the different modems, flash each, and download a few things to see which is faster. Also check and see how well the GPS works on each.
Rooting will fix the lag, although one of the ROM kitchen kernels (Glitterball's Voodoo) will improve it even further. There is something called "Project Voodoo" which is a community of developers who build a kernel tweak called Voodoo which completely fixes the remaining lag issue (this is caused by the inefficient way the captivate organizes its folders), and also improves a few other features such as resolution.
You should go try out my ROM its small and fast and stable. I'm getting great battery life and DL/UL speeds. Give it a shot.
Here.
Well I decided to go with the serendipity 5.9, I love the speed, my upload and download speeds almost doubled, bluetooth and wifi finally work like they are supposed to!!
I do have a few complaints though, like the keyboard for texting, I loved the samsung one, I hate swipe any way i can get the stock one back on there?

It comes with the Gingerbread keyboard as well.
However, if you're still interested in the Samsung keyboard, it's in here:

I just found that, wow, short of having a flash on the camera and video chat this phone is now everything I could have ever dreamed of
Holy crap what a difference. Everything actually works and is super fast. I would be on cloud nine right now except for the fact I'm probably soon getting the Atrix, this will def hold me over till then.
Im using Precision 3.5 with the monochrome 3.5 theme. Its running the latest suckerpunch kernel. For sure my favorite combo I've tried so far. Its really amazing, not to mention dev'd by ryude, who is one of the best!

Samsung Captivate running Serendipity 5.12 Paragon6 1200-100hz (uv'd and slightly oc'd) and I9000XXJVE modem. Almost have it edited/themed up how I want it. Need to get started on custom icons and I think I want to try my hand at a completely custom framework. Anyway, I was perfectly happy with 'dipity out of the box, but since I've flashed Paragon this phone is AMAZING. It's quite fast and the battery seems to last forever. Just now recharging for the first cycle after having to reflash my rom w/o a full battery, so after today I'll know for sure how long the battery last, but initially it seems like I'll get a day or so with my daughter constantly playing video's and games all day.
I have tried the team phoenix roms. I'm currently running phoenix 7.0 and am happy so far.

I am running phoenix. 7 with latest paragon 1200 rom using uv and this is by far the best combo I have had yet. Using jl3 modem and call quality is great. I change roms almost daily and this one will be here for a while, I am happy with everything this combo has to offer and speed and battery life is excellent.

I wouldn't mind knowing either. I'm thinking it's a different launcher, but I'm only guessing. Still kinda new to android.
I have been using this build for quite a while now and decided to write a review of the ROM. Please keep in mind I am not a developer !!! I am simply writing this from a user standpoint and cannot nor will not support your problems. This is a review based on my opinions and usage of the ROM.
Pros:
I do like the UI. It is fairly stable and I haven't had much trouble out of it for the most part. The combination of ADW Launcher and the Cyanogen settings are great. The speed of the ROM is pretty good for a ported ROM based on GingerBread. I can't complain much about that. General things that I like are the advanced menus for customizing the dock and theme settings. The themed settings change icons for contacts, mail, messaging, phone, browser, calendar, and videos ( I may have missed some). The cyanogen settings cover an array of things that you can poke at but in my opinion should be included with stock builds as well. Overall if you were wanting to use this on a daily basis I think you would be ok to go ahead and install this ROM... NOTE: Don't hold me responsible if you brick your phone trying. It isn't one of the easiest roms I've
ever installed. The sleep policy has been fixed so that the phone doesn't reboot on unlock...which on my first flash hadn't been fixed and really really turned me off from this ROM.
Cons: I have yet to figure out why this is (again not a dev) but your microSD card will not mount when connected to the pc. I'm sure they are working on this but I haven't downloaded an update or nightly (which is current at the time of this post btw) that has fixed it. I do have some random picky things that I can't get an answer to, and good luck if you do...feel free to send them to me also. Some of my .mp3 ringtones will not work period. Different ones of even larger file size work... I'm not sure how that works out. Text messaging (native) doesn't work for incoming or outgoing... But I will say that I was having issues with that before so I can't blame that on this ROM. There are a few apps that won't work with this build easy uninstaller is one, I just get a fc. Battery is another issue that may be addressed with future releases. I don't run GPS (so don't ask if it's accurate) but keep wifi on all the time. I get probably about 8 hours with wifi on all the time. Not the best but definitely not the worst. You also cannot charge the phone while it is off... really not sure why, and the extended power menu doesn't work. And for the most part is an in depth install procedure... Back to stock with odin, flash two kernals, then a couple of files... Pretty lengthy and you have to be precise or else it bricks. Here it is if your interested... Thanks to MobileTechVideos for the instructions and video.
How to install CyanogenMod7
Other than that I have had virtually no problems (that I consider major) with this ROM and do like it and will probably continue to use it. If you have any general questions please feel free to ask. Again, again... I am not a dev so questions of that nature should be posted here: CyanogenMod7
I tried it and liked what works but it is still alpha quality and so i will wait for a few weeks until i give it another shot.

I agree, it is definitely still a beta build and as noted by Cyanogen... hasn't been put into the stable build section of their forums. I do look forward to a stable build. Perhaps the Dev's can address some of the weird issues that I mentioned above.
i also was not able to send multi media mms never would go through i tried for 20 mins to receive and send ,
this rom is great but here is why it sucks, i watch the cyanogen nightlies for the galaxy s phones, and with the types of updates im seeing on the cappy versus lets say the vibrant , there is no ****ing hope and this rom is dead.
the last update fixed an install file wtf. so at this rate cyanogen will be rc in o id say next year. ill have a new phone by then. my money is on miui

Well you completely forgot to mention that, currently it cannot handle lots of video format, most importantly mkv and even if you find something like Rock Player, there's a lot of lag in it. You cannot charge the phone while its off (because it'll turn on as soon as you plug the charger in). Also, you might encounter a totally new problem which you may not have an idea about. If captivate is your spare phone then play with it else stay away for a while until a RC is released.
This is just my opinion from 3 days of experience on CM7.

It was a total flop for me :/
It ran well when I first installed it, but started running "funny" (random crashing) after I installed gapps, then totally started crapping out after the 3/16 update.
I ended up ditching it for a 2.2 rom, mostly because I didn't feel I was gaining anything substantive and losing things I regularly use, like a feature rich camera app and divx playback support.
Been running for 3 days. 0 problems.
I've ran into a few bugs. External SD, booting when usb plugged in. Only charging to 95% (apparently a feature not a bug). At one point my signal shot down to searching, then it recovered and grabbed a signal. Not sure what caused that, but it was random.
I also cannot get it to mount to my PC. Kind of annoying, but if I need to transfer anything I just use dropbox.
I like it, and I think I'll keep with it. Even though it isn't 100%, I love gingerbread, and it's working for me.

I did forget that you cannot charge the phone while off and now that you mention it the extended power menu doesn't work either. It is fairly aggravating that Cyanogen updates the vibrant with "real" fixes other than this fixing little things but... All in all, it is still usable, just not stable or reliable.
Every time I try and warn someone that CM7 is not yet ready for primetime I get bashed for it, yet there seem to be plenty of people echoing my comments. Like I said in another thread, the people that are saying CM7 is stable and works great are either not using their device to its full potential or are willing to live without certain features. There is really no compelling reason to live with a ROM that has this many bugs or deficiencies when you consider how many really good ROMs there are available for our Cappys that have few, if any, issues. Yeah, they may not have Gingerbready theming or cutesy animations, but they just work. Andromeda 1.2 is one that comes to mind.
I am on it from I think last friday...Not a single problem...atleast how i use it...of course except battery life...which I am trying to solve...
Rock player worked well for me...I watched couple of movies when I was on road....never lagged just stopped couple of times....
great GPS...instant locks...i am amazed...But I also tried MIUI...and it is very very fast...and something different which I never experienced before...I think people should give it a try...ofcourse it has bugs too as it based on CM7...but they fixed camera bug and little stuff.....

I am by no means saying that it is ready for the masses... The only one that I would suggest without a second thought to someone who isn't willing to deal with at least some problems is Cognition Series by DesignGears. To my knowledge (and opinion) this is the absolute best rom for the captivate. IF ... Cyanogen gets to the point of a Cognition rom in function and use, then I might suggest it for the masses but not until then.

Your right in regard to it not being ready for most users (many are already praising the miui 2.3.3 also which is even less stable.....not saying it isn't promising). I think it breaks into 2 camps.
1. If you are a power user that wants all aspects of your device to function as intended...not for you. More specifically, If you use an external SD especially if your moving files to and from mounted to a PC....this is not the rom for you (this is my biggest gripe at this point). If you do lots of video in different formats...not for you as you will face compatibility issues. If you have to ask how your flash back to stock....this is probably not for you. If you value battery life as a top priority...not yet for you. Most of the other deficiencies or shortcomings had adequate work arounds but you until the major issues are resolved you will quickly find yourself flashing back to Phoenix, Firefly, Serendipity, Andromeda, etc.)
2. If you don't use and external SD and/or do much media vid/music then i can see why many view this as "stable" for their purposes. The UI, menus, and animations are smooth/fast and i never really had any issues with force closes while using it. Maybe its better linguistically to say its incomplete rather than refer to is as unstable and sorry if it offends the early adopters but if you are using it as your daily driver its pretty obvious you are using an inferior rom @ this point.

Excellent post.
Glad to see users sharing their experience on CM7. This is always good foe the community. I hope to see new users to read this thread prior to making any decision whether to flash CM7 2.3.3 or not.
On another note, I'm sure once Samsung do final release of Gingerbread 2.3.3 for i9000 series (last I heard that an early beta was released), we cappyites will see stable release.

Regarding the phone turning on when charging, I believe it's a gingerbread "feature". It's been said that it is working as intended. Also, the iphone does the same thing so I don't really see it as an issue. It's probably google seeing behavior they like and implementing it.
You can not mount the external sd but you can transfer to your internal then on the phone transfer to external, so I am not certain it Is fair to say you can not use your external sd. Video is an issue, and battery is as well.
At this point in time it is a trade off, there are several things cm7 can't do well or can not do at all. there are also several things it does much better than any 2.2 rom or are not available on 2.2 roms.
Its all preference and priorities. Kinda like any best rom discussion.

Largely it its because you have never used it, and have only tried one rom. That and you are compelled to jump on any thread that mentions it as if it is a personal mission. It its not as if you do not make some valid points, but it is not hard to see why it may rub some the wrong way after a while.

Agreed... I was not trying to start a thread to bash any rom. However I do know that there are some hard feelings that are out based on certain features that work or don't and peoples impressions about the ROM itself. I also know that there is quite a bit of loyalty to certain ROM creators that no matter what they aren't going to be going to a new ROM simply because they are loyal to that dev... which is fine! I simply wanted to create an avenue for people who have used the ROM to pass along information and opinions on the ROM to people who are thinking about switching to it. People are entitled to their opinions and I am all for that... Just don't bash any of the devs or their work, it is not easy putting this stuff together and I for one am happy that I have a place I can go to that allows me to get away from stock. I hope that all will realize that

Not having TSM parts is a selling point for me. Gummy has just gotten worse and worse since about 1.4, IMHO. I'm actually preferring debloated stock GB to Gummy GBE at the moment, so I'm glad to see another player in the field.

Out of curiosity what about Gummy do you not like so much that you have posted something along these lines multiple times today?

It has gotten laggier, bloatier, and more FC prone over time, not to mention the fact that I loath the themes. GummyComb is the only one that I like at all, but the light blue-on-white text kills it, and it still has the tiny status bar icons that I hate. Outside of that, I tried 3 times, with 3 fresh wipes and installs to get 2.0 FE to work and had continual issues with multiple apps including the Market.

Gotcha. I have never experienced any FC's that weren't app related on any version of Gummy so maybe I am just lucky. There are so many other themes out there that I don't really care about the ones built in. Right now I am running Matted Blues and I like it a lot (I used to run that on my Fascinate as well).
Either way, to each their own. I am definitely all for different options though. I will probably try just about any new ROM that comes out anyway to see if I like it.

Honestly, sounds like user error or a bad download. As for more laggy, that's just funny. For more bloat, new features are a good thing. As for FC prone, I have not had a single FC. For themes, that is your own opinion. I am a fan of minimalgummy.
I will respect your opinion, but like I said, it seems more along the lines or user error or a bad download. Always make sure you wipe data/cache when coming from a diff rom(most likely your FC issue).

Maybe you didn't notice where I said I wiped before every flash. The last time I tried it, I Odined the PIT and stock EE4, flashed CWM, wiped data, cache, and dalvik (I always do all the wipes when flashing a ROM even if it's the same ROM), and flashed 2.0. I still had issues. Both a general UI sluggishness as well as Market issues.
As for "more features", what one man calls features, another calls bloat. The legacy of Gummy is a fast, lean ROM. That is long gone. Granted, GBE is much quicker than FE, and I'm talking overall feel...not benchmark numbers. On FE, as more features have been added, interface sluggishness has been introduced. It hasn't been very pronounced until 2.0, but it's been creeping in for a while. I'm not really confident that GBE is going to be any better when it gets all the bloat from FE. I'm currently running debloated stock EP1W (since last night), and it's snappier than 1.9RC2.3 GBE w/ ext4. I'm waiting for a good GB ROM to get rid of these crap-toned colors, but it's not gonna be one that force feeds me a bunch of extras that I can't trim out.
I never heard of this rom so I was just wondering what is gonna make it great, and I would also like to know what the stock theme would be

Why don't you just cook up your own personal rom (Not in a snappy tone)? I haven't noticed any slowdowns, fc's, or anything out of the ordinary. I love this rom.

Not sure why everybody has to hate mummy is what it is. Most of their development is and has been around froyo. The GB build is half finished and has no flexibility tool.box hasn't been done and no themes. I think most of us root and mess with our phones to go forward, not just keep basically the same thing aka froyo. I could be wrong. It appears this leak has been done released to some people for awhile and waiting for the ok to go officialy go fwd. I tried 2.0 its laggy and is a battery hog. AKA froyo.

wow haha i personally love gummycharged!! its probably my favorite right now, but i had darkslide on my droid x and it is the best rom i have ever ran on a phone. BUT i will DEF miss tsm partts ! pretty much both roms and great and have great developers.
Saying dark slide will be the best charge ROM ever is a pretty bold statement and one I would dispute. I tried the dark slide DroidX ROM for a while and never really cared for it.
I swapped to Liberty and never looked back.....
I like trying new ROMs and may give this one a shot, but I'll be surprised if I stay with it.

This isn't meant as a slight whatsoever so please try not to take it as such, but I just don't get why you find the need to tout TSM parts so much and/or feel the need to remind us that TSM is such a true Mod everytime somebody states they like another Rom better than TSM. You're right about what you said about opinion but aren't others entitled to theirs too?

I will do my best to keep this short and also hope it hasn't already been answered for the sanity of the fantastic developers on this site. I know you guys hate repetition.
I've recently gone through a breakup with my now-ex, and we are not on speaking terms because of his inability to maintain sanity in some situations. My problem here is that he enjoyed continuously staying updated with the most recent updates and mods for my Charge. I have no clue how to do any of this modding, and since we are not on speaking terms, I don't know what to do about my laggy, hasn't-been-modded-in-months phone.
Before I ended communication, he spoke of a possible ICS update for my Charge. He told me it was solely open-ended developer stuff, no official update or anything, but that it was surprisingly stable. Even with him not in contact with me at this time, I would still like to see if I could do this 'update' myself. Is it possible for a complete noob like myself to do it? Or should I just leave it alone and find someone entirely more experienced to help me through it? If it's going to brick my phone with the slightest mistake, I'd rather not even try. But, like I said, you guys are the experts.
I would enjoy any kind of assistance, if possible, to install this pseudo-ICS; unless I can wait another however long the official update is for Verizon, un-root back to stock, and have the official ICS.
I guess my basic questions are:
When will the official ICS become available for my Charge through Verizon? I know it's available stock with the Galaxy Nexus (which I want quite badly) already.
Could a complete noob like myself do this with the help of you guys giving me links and step-by-step instructions (if you would be so kind)?
How easy is it to mess up without clear instructions?
I really appreciate any kind of input. MANY thanks for reading!

No ics. No word on official update for ics. If I were you I would go back completely stock. Links are in dev section

Girls?! On the internet?!
If you're not comfortable with any of this stuff then just go back to stock. There isn't any ICS, and there probably won't be, at least for a long time. best you can do is flash a theme or something.

My vote? Just learn how to mod the phone! It's really not that hard. Here's a post to get you familiar: http://rootzwiki.com/topic/4847-guide-new-users-guide-everything-how-to-root-rom-kernels-radios-cwm/
Don't flash the Froyo or Gingerbread links at the bottom tho, they'd a bit dated. Just check that post out to get familiar with the terms and process. While you're there, download and install ODIN (there's a link in that post).
***Before we move on...do you have Titanium Backup in your app drawer? If not, spend the $7. It's so worth it because you can save the vast majority of your data. It's worth the $7 (you may have it already because the exbf may have bought it/installed it). Get it and Google how to use it--make a full backup of system apps, users apps, and data before doing anything else.**
So, once you've read that post on RootzWiki, have downloaded ODIN, and made a backup with Titanium Backup, come back here and flash THIS file (follow the link in the 2nd paragraph for detailed instructions): http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1380430
OK. At this point you will be unrooted and have the latest Verizon updates on your phone. You can... choose to quit... or choose to mod more. Keep in mind, if you've figured out how to flash to stock, you know how to flash mods and can continue to mod.
If I were you, I'd check out TweakStock at this point. Flash the version WITHOUT the customized kernel. Probably your best bet. Themes should be coming out for TweakStock soon, so maybe you'll find something you like.
And yeah, regarding Ice Cream Sandwich... Not happening, at least for awhile. Don't worry about it--only the Galaxy Nexus has it right now anyway.
Thank you! This was very helpful. I'm glad you pointed it out; yes, I do have Titanium. He had the paid version, signed in my phone with his Google account, and DL'd it onto my apps.
But here is another problem I have thought of-- I don't know what kind of ROM or Kernal I have...at all. No clue. Like I said, he was the expert. He always tried to show me how to do stuff, but it always went in one ear and out the other. I'm a girl who needs to be shown something from the beginning, by trial and error, and he would simply show me something 'cool' if he came across it and show me how to install it. Haha. Not saying that was ever a bad thing, I'm extremely interested in learning, but we never really had the time, and I don't want to be alone if I screw up.
go to settings> about phone and look at your firmware version. If it's 2.3.x you're on gingerbread. (you should be, if not your bf was a noob)
If you go to Settings and you see TSM Parts you're on Infinity.
If you see poop brown as a main color theme you're stock rooted.
If you go to your lock screen and it says TweakStock in the upper right hand corner you're on TweakStock.
GummyCharged and Humble are hard to distinguish. But chances are if you're not on any of the above, you're running Humble.
For kernel: if you run a program called Voodoo Control and it says status: ext4 active near the bottom, you're running imoseyon's repacked kernel. Anything else, you're either on stock or imnuts' repack.

Megan... I love you...and I am sorry... I'm not sure if you were hoping i'd find your thread.
But heres the info needed incase.
It's the most recent rootzwiki gummycharged, it's outdated, but it's at least bloatfree. Stock leaked kernel from way back, but it was for sure 2.3. I don't play with ancient software.
When I said upadte, Verizon had finally gotten an Official 2.3, over the leaked, which I urged you to update to for stability, even with bloat, since most roms will now be based off the OTA. When I spoke of ICS, I meant on my phone, and I guess it's hard to exactly explain what open source is, roms, and ota's. But given a Dev and the right sources from Sammy and Google, it can run it. This phone just seems to lack the strong community it did with imnuts, like the fascinate.
Enjoy Inifinty. I'll be a better person someday in the long run, but right now, i've got a lot more to work on with myself rather than phones (which is why my ICS is kinda not a big deal to me as).

Charge Insufficient Memory On Device
I rooted a Droid Charge for my boss using the altered beast method, and now no matter what I do. When I try to download from the market, it tells me there is insufficient space on the device. When there is plenty of room on the sd card, and internal. Can someone please help me, I've tried a reset, and clearing the cache, and download history in the market. Any help someone could offer would be much appreciated.
I bought my Charge about a year ago (still no 4G in our area but that's a whole other discussion . . .) and figured I'd wait until the manufacturer warranty expires before rooting my phone.
I glanced over the development page and noticed that JT is still working on ICS but it's not yet fully ready. Does anyone have a recommendation regarding which ROM to root to my phone? It will be the first time I've ever routed a device before but I know how to follow instructions, so I assume I'll be fine.
Any recommendations anyone can give me would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, guys!

Either Tweaked or Eclipse. Essentially, they're our only two choices, but they're both good quality. For kernels, most people like Imnuts' PBJ kernel.
Yeah, I was looking at that one (someone else suggested that one and the transparent ICS theme). It looks like one of the links comes already bundled with the PBJ you mentioned so I'll probably get that one.
One question I did have was regarding EX4. I don't know if I need it or not. I have a stock SDA card but I don't know how to check if it's EX3 or EX4 or if I even need that portion . . . I'd rather not have to wipe my SD card but it's really not all that hard to backup to a computer so I guess it's not a huge deal. I'd rather not do an extra step I don't need to do though.
So yeah, is there anywhere in the forums that talk about EX3 or EX4? I searched in these forums and found a few articles about it but I still don't know if it's something I need or not.

I'm pretty sure EXT4 conversion does not affect external memory. It will only convert the data/dbdata/cache/system partitions to the newer file system. So no need to worry about your SD card. Personally, I would not recommend converting to EXT4 at this point. There is always a chance you can corrupt your internal partitions and brick your device. It is very difficult to hard brick a Charge, but from what I can recall those that have have been a result of a bad ext4 conversion. Ever since the Gingerbread OTA was rolled out, RFS has been more than adequate for the Charge. While you do get higher benchmark scores with EXT4, difference in real world usage is negligible (from my experience).
And Tweaked is by far the best current ROM for this phone. It is hands down the best ROM ever made for the Charge. If Eclipse is ever updated again, I would give that one a chance too.
In my opinion, the only reason to convert to ext4 on EP4 or FP1 is to make nandroid backups work. If you don't intend to use nandroid, no reason to convert.
ext4 definitely has significantly higher I/O throughput, but you'll only see it in benchmarks. You won't see any difference in the real world.
Tweaked gets my vote and as for kernels go, an increasing number of people prefer the stock kernel over PBJT for various reasons. Try both to see what works best for you.
Sent from my SCH-I510 using Tapatalk 2
I use Tweaked, and am very happy with it. I've tried PBJ kernel several times with EXT4, but can't get rid of some lag issues, so I keep going back to the stock kernel.

I like tweaked - plus it gets the most support right now. I think the eclipse developer has a newer phone, so that ROM has probably seen it's last update.
additionally, you've also got great themers here like Blackness, etc...
finally, you don't have to choose a custom ROM when rooting - you can still stick with stock or a debloated/deodexed ROM. but that will lack the bells and whistles of a tweaked or Eclipse.
also keep in mind that there are very easy ways to revert back to stock (just ask blackness - I think he did that 28 times over a 10-hour span last weekend ) so VZW will never know that your phone has been rooted....
I have what is probably a very silly, basic question. If I want to root my phone to using tweaked 2.2, should I be following this guide (except with Tweaked, rather than GB 2.3.4)?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1160580
Is there another guide you would recommend?
Also, I'm hoping to read a bit more about all the terminology for rooting phones, all the basics, etc. I've been able to find a couple of general guides (in this forum and using google) and each one teaches me a little bit but I figured I'd ask the masters. If you were just starting to look into this, what guide/articles/pages would you recommend reading?

That's as good of a guide as I've seen. I don't think I've ever had to "tap" the power button to get into download mode, fwiw. Just hold Vol down and plug it in.
There's not a whole lot you can screw up that Odin can't fix. Just make absolutely certain that your computer does not lose power and that your device does not become unplugged during any Odin'ing you do. I'd recommend going over to www.imnuts.org and pulling the EP4D and Charge.pit files in the event that you need to back out. Having them on your computer will save you the headache later on.
As far as guides, most of them are going to be really dated. The Charge community is winding down, and those of us who are left are generally pretty helpful and patient when it comes to questions. We don't have much in the way of guides because there is no large influx of newbies ever coming our way to clog up the forum. If you pay attention to Rootzwiki, there is a new fella who tried to do things on his own and got really frustrated by the lack of info. That lack of info is probably due to the fact that none of us really need it.
That said, if you run into a question, just ask. If nothing else, I'll try to help you out.
I had a babyzilla turn off my computer during the Odin process, and I was able to fully recover. So no real danger there.
Also, www.chargeforums.com has also got some helpful how to threads as well.

I've read that you can get hosed if it stops in the middle of flashing the modem? I don't know if there's any validity to that.
Not really sure where it was the process, but it happened a few tines. The first two times were due to a certain web page freezing up my PC.

For the record, I put Tweaked 2.2 w/PBJ on my charge, used tweaktools to add Transparent ICS and it looks and runs great. If anyone was considering whether or not to use it, I'd highly recommend it.
