[GUIDE] Root Instructions (manual method) - Motorola Milestone Android Development

If you are on FW: 2.0 or 2.0.1 Read PART 1
If you are on FW: 2.1 Read Part 2
MOD EDIT: For the Telus 2.0.1/2.1 Milestones, start at Part 2.
PART 1
So you are on Firmware 2.0 or 2.0.1 and wanna get root permissions.
First thing you need is the rooted update.zip, which you can download HERE
Put the ZIP file on your SD card
Shut down your phone
Go into recovery mode by holding the Camera-Button and pressing Power-Up
When you see the /!\ -sign press Volume-Up and the the Camera Button
Select "Apply update.zip"
Your'e done
PART 2
Be sure that your phone have atleast 80% of charge.
To root a 2.1 phone we need to downgrade the recovery
For this we need a Only-Recovery SBF file which we can flash via RSD Lite
First install the USB drivers from Motorola
The you need the RSD Lite Tool | Linux machines can use the linux flasher (created by [mbm])
And the Recovery-Only SBF (which will downgrade the Recovery Partition and not the system)
Start the RSD Lite, select the SBF file
Plug in your phone (while its off)
Go into the Bootloader Mode by holding UP (on the hardware keyboard) and press Power-On for 2-3 seconds (if UP doesn't work try pressing X)
Now select your phone which should be now visible in the RSD Lite tool
Press Start
The phone will reboot 1-3 times while the downgrade process. DO NOT unplug it
When its done, you can apply the same method as in PART 1

If Im correct then the Telus MotoMilestone requires a different method to root?

I would update your Telus Milestone to 2.1 and then use the Part 2 method. That will work.
EDIT: The Telus 2.0.1 method requires you to flash the Brazilian 2.0.1 SPF, and then do the rest of Part 1. I would not recommend that.
However, I have a nandroid backup of a Telus 2.0.1 stock, if you ever need to restore that.

Nice work, if we keep the forum clean and add stickies like this, it will stay nice and clear.

Telus 2.0.1 was also rootable by flashing the same rootable recovery only SBF. I did it and it worked.
Indeed though, the only way back to Telus 2.0.1 is by nandroid, not SBF. But you'd have to have a pretty good reason for wanting 2.0.1 over 2.1.

After being rooted, does Android Wifi Tether work on this device?

Worked flawlessly with Brazilian retail 2.1. Additional thanks for Linux sbfflash, no need to fire a Windows VM

Does part 2 work with the moto droid? The only reason I ask is because the file downloaded, is milestone_root.zip, trying to be cautious and not brick my phone thanks in advance for the info.
Wow, soo sorry, I just did the research, the milstone and the moto droid are one in the same, >.<

NO, the CDMA Droid is not the same as the GSM/UMTS Milestone. We can't guarantee these methods will work for Droids. But if they do, feel free to report it!

How can i solve this?

Droid root 2.1 tethering
will it erase all data on droid? What is a good kernel for wifi tethering on stock 2.1?

I get the same damn error, even though I had root before updating to the newest 2.2.36 update.

does this works with a non-retail 2.1 Milestone? I got a (unlocked) 2.1 Milestone from TIM (Brazil).

Don't know if anyone notice but there's an app out to root your phone now even if on 2.1. Its called easy root and its on the market. It says its been tested on Droid and couple other devices. Just something for noobs to know and if you had questions about rooting with out computer in passed. Give it a look!

[obsolete] downgrade from OTA 1.32.651.6

Hello
THIS THREAD IS OBSOLETE. PLEASE CLOSE.
YOU SHOULD BE ABLE TO ROOT DIRECTLY FROM 1.32.651.6 WITHOUT DOWNGRADING.
EDIT:
This is only confirmed to work with 1.32.651.6.
Refer to toast's reply below to understand why it might not work with other versions.
STEPS IF YOU WANT TO DOWNGRADE FROM STOCK .6 to STOCK .1 (NO ROOT)
1. I installed the latest RUU 1.32.651.6 found in this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=695604
2. And I was able to downgrade back to the original one found here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=685835
IF YOU WANT TO ROOT YOUR STOCK .6, JUST DO THE FOLLOWING:
3. Then did toast's root tutorial and got to the recovery and everything:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=690762
4. And am back to the rooted 1.32.651.1 with the ability to get to recovery and flash roms:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=693980
On step 2, the RUU was not able to reboot my device into the bootloader. So I booted into the bootloader myself (hold vol down + power on) then plug in the usb, select fastboot and then start the RUU from the PC. It installed like a champ and brought me back to 1.32.651.1.
Hope this helps everyone who decided to upgrade.
perfect!!! thanks for doing all this, testing and documenting your process. i was concerned with being limited between which versions, root process, recovery versions, etc.
this is great to know and should remove any doubts/concerns anybody has about jumping into the fray of flashing/experimenting/developing!
Yeah I had the ota RUU 1.32.651.6 installed, then found a method close to toasts method, rooted, flashes flipz stock rom, flash radio update, back to 1.32.651.1 with the radio update, still rooted!!! I even tried the froyo rom and thought it was cool, but waiting on more functionality version, so flashed back to stock rom, still rooted! Even thing works great (no 4g in my area so dont know about that.)
It's not that the current ruus won't allow u to downgrade. It's that every time u flash a newer ruu, u are gambling with root. Go look at the Eris and hero forums and u will see. I'm not gonna promote the flashing of ruus because I know what can happen. I have a eng ruu that is older and it can not be flashed because the mainversion is lower then the current mainversion. My goal is to inform everyone of the risks involve in flashing the newer ruus. The fact of not being able to downgrade isn't something I made up. U are just lucky that the newest ruus don't set the mainversion past the bootloader limit for downgrading.
Re: [howto] downgrade from OTA 1.32.651.6
I remember we were told excessives flashes can cause problems but with my htc diamond for the past year i was ruu updating weekly using different roms with their latest releases on my diamond is still going strong.. i like to say its user specific but i could be wrong

appreciate your feedback, knowledge and experience toast.
seems like the most accurate way to state this is flashing a newer RUU puts the EVO at risk of not being able to downgrade (or use root, wifi tether, custom ROMs, etc)
hopefully we will be able to detect when this change takes place, by md5sum on hboot.img and compare to previous versions. it didnt seem to change between .1 and .6 . hopefully it wont change in the future! once the md5sum changes, i'd say the risk of not being able to downgrade increases significantly!
although, ive only had an HTC phone with android for 3 days now, i could def be wrong in my analysis ...
I mean it could be the .1 and .6 doesn't matter. But idk

I flashed the .6 through running ruu .exe,I havn't root my phone yet,can I run the unrevoke.apk to root then install wifi tether pre14 ?will this work?thanks.
So, semi-floating off topic. It turns out that ultimately the unrevoked root doesn't really do much, and apparently isn't enough for custom roms... if I was going to want to flash something custom, would I need to FIRST follow this guide to downgrade, THEN perform toasts root?
tl;dr - does toasts root work on .6?

Yeah - if you are on .6, just do steps 2 and 3 then flash whatever rom u want using toast's recovery
Sent from my PC36100 using Tapatalk
I installed Sprint's official .6 by mistake, but was able to do steps 1 and 2 of your guide. I can see I'm in version .1 in my phone settings. However, when trying to follow toast's instructions from your step 3, I can't even do "adb push". When I do "adb devices", it doesn't see the phone. So I manually copied the PC36IMG.zip to the SD by mounting the USB and went into Fastboot. It did see the ZIP file and scanned (blue progress bar on the right). It actually looked like it scanned it twice, but, at the end, I didn't get an option to flash it. It just went back to the original 4-option fastboot menu. What am I doing wrong?
Re: [howto] downgrade from OTA 1.32.651.6
Sounds like it fails when it checks the rom. Make sure htc sync is installed on your pc then boot the phone, connect it and instead of charge only, select htc sync. Then, do the adb push stuff and try again.
And dont go to fastboot this time, just boot and wait and it should ask you whether to flash or not

No. this won't work. These are .sbf files so they have to be flashed via rsdlite. They CANNOT be flashed with clockwork and will probably screw up your phone more if you do. Boot your phone into bootloader, connect to your pc, and use rsdlite to use these files.
Before you do that, though, try a battery pull. Do that a few times and it might get you into clockwork.

Sorry dude but you'll lose your Metro flash. It will have to be reflashed. If you don't want to pay to have it flashed, I would start reading some online flashing manuals.
On the other hand, does anyone know where I can get the 2.2.1 files?

okay. so i flashed my droid with the 2.01, not knowing which version it was on before it got bricked.
the backlight turns on, but NOTHING ELSE shows up.
when i flashed the SBF to the droid with RSDLITE, the bootloader shows the SW UPDATE in progress, but it still boots to NOTHING...and when i try to go to the bootloader, all that is shown is the blank backlit screen..same when starting the droid.
i'm confused as to what exactly is missing here...the stock SBF is flashed, yet it still won't boot??
edit: tried 2.1, same problem!! currently trying 2.2...i'll update when it's done.
2.2 same problem.
Just as an alternate incase any of the links in the first post die, Peter Alfonso (Creator of Bugless Beast) has some links on his website.

Are there no files other than Verizon SBF files??????????

can i use these to recover from a hard/softbrick do not have device yet but i am getting one in the coming days
As long as you can get into the bootloader, yes.
I downloaded each one of these and tried to do this with RSD Lite but it keeps telling me it fails.
I am not sure what I am doing wrong. Would someone be able to assist me?
No data
Ok, my droid lost data connection ( no 3g or 1x icon) it has just the phone´s signal strength bars, wifi works fine, and the icon only appears momentarly when I turn of data connection in wireless settings or turn on airplane mode. So I read some place that I had to run sbf files to reset radio or change radio, actually my phone has Steel Droid v.10.2 (gingerbread 2.3.7) on it.
So my question is if it´s ok to run any of these sbf files on my droid, and will it get stock radio?

Anyone have a mirror for the 2.0 SBF?

*Unroot 2.2* 3.29.651.5 10/20/10

Ok, this worked for me as of 10/20/10, i had my phone rooted by unrevoked, I am like many of the people here who kept having issues with all the PC36IMG.zip not working. I have extracted a new PC36IMG.zip from the ruu's and have not had any issues. I also had the dreaded "main version is older" issue. This seemed to take care of the issue! Im now back to stock!
Step 1 you will need to go here:
http://downloads.unrevoked.com/forever/current/unrevoked-forever-son.zip
If you used Unrevoked Forever at any time, flash unrevoked-forever-son.zip from recovery until hboot shows S-ON(Credit to djR3Z tut)
Step 2
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=108Z9R8Y
This is the PC36IMG.zip file that you will need
- Put this on the root of your sdcard
- Boot into hboot and let it load up the PC36IMG.zip
- It will run like a normal update
- Reboot when finished
- It will do a few other things (Load radio and update)
- After it fully loads you should be back to complete stock!!!!
Lemme know if this doesn't work for you
LIKE I SAID THIS WORKED AS OF 10/20/2010!!!
I am not responsible for damages to your phone! You chose to go the route you did, so face the consequences, I'm just posting what has worked for me, so use at your own risk! Love the android, love my evo!
Has been tested and works if you have a rooted via unrevoked method.

Im not understanding? If you apply just the PC36IMG you should at least lose root and be updated to latest update. You have to run the first tool to relock the bootloader. You will see in hboot if it is locked or unlocked. Locked is s- on unlocked is s- off
My bad, I was wanting to root or better yet, update to 29 and then root.
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
yes you can achieve root on the new update through unrevoked. I'm not a fan of rooting this way, as people have had lots of trouble unrooting (had this problem myself). Thats why I came up with this tut so you can unroot if you have to send back to sprint. my method was the only one that worked for me to get unrooted.
people...just use unrevoked 3...i mean its a one click process...u dont have to do anything after that in about 2 minutes your rooted and nand unlocked =P

Just flash a ROM that's based on the 3.29 update.
Well hopefully this works. I'm not going to root with unrevoked again I don't think. It was much easier for me to unroot my last phone w/o using unrevoked.
Nope, as of 1/19/11 this does not work.

Hey all. When the 2.3.2 update was released, my Droid 2 was trying to automatically download and update but it failed the update every time. Maybe because I'm rooted and I had removed several of the B.S. apps I didn't want. So I downloaded the full SBF and used RSD Lite to update it. Everything went smoothly. Now I have an issue where several times a day I'll get a toast entitled "Info: Download of update failed." If I go to settings > about phone > system updates I get a toast that says "An update is currently being downloaded. You will be notified when the download is complete" followed by the download failed notification.
It seems like the phone is still trying to download the update even though I already have it. Any idea how to stop the automatic download? I already tried rebooting the phone with no luck. Any suggestions are appreciated!

My only suggestion is that your phone still wants to update. If you were to wipe cache and wipe data/factory reset I would think the problem would be gone.
You can Flash straight to this SBF. I started playing with roms after I got the update and basicly bricked my phone I was at the M screen or a boot loop just after and just flashed straight to 2.3.2 and it worked fine.

I don't know if I need to post this here or not. I somehow messed up my phone. I didn't use any sbf and or rsd lite before i rooted my phone. But I was upgrading a rom from rubix 1.8.6 to the 1.8.9 and messed it up. It was stuck at M icon forever then i started messing around with the bootloader and reading these boards. I tried flashing the sbf 2.2 and all that stuff, and couldn't get it out of boot loader. I then tried the 2.3 sbf and now it says low battery, corrupt file..... please help on how i can fix this. I am a noob when it comes to this and any help would greatly be appreciated.

You need to get a charged battery and then you can try flashing the 2.3.2 SBF again(Droid 2 only). The phone won't charge unless your phone has software on it so you need to find somebody with another D2 or a D1 or an external battery charger to get a battery with full or near full power. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=804088 Read through this tutorial even if you are flashing in windows. It's got everything you need to know about SBF flashing (more for linux but the fixes at the bottom are for anytime you flash an SBF).
If you mess up an install it's always better to try and get into clockwork because unless you really messed up the install you can just get back in to clockwork and re-install and you should be fine. The best way to get into clockwork is to:
1.Shut off phone(battery pull if you need to and wait about 15 seconds so that it doesn't just boot up again).
2.(with phone completely off) plug the phone into the wall charger.
3.Now turn on your phone. (if you get the battery charge screen just press power again)
4.(wait a bit) Now you should be in Clockwork recovery.(if that didn't work try it a few more times.)

ROOT] HTC EVO 4G 2.3 Gingerbread root tutorial

Alright guys, this post is just for reference and ease. I've been using xda ever since I got my old HTC Hero a year and a half ago. Now I have the EVO and xda has been nothing but helpful to me. I've decided to make this post to try to help anyone that might not know much about android so I will make this a simple, easy to understand post tutorial.
HTC EVO 4G 2.3 Gingerbread root tutorial:
(Step 1) Power down your phone and take the battery out. Printed on the phone under the battery is a serial number. It is on the bottom line and usually starts with the letters: HT then a series of numbers and letters. Write this code down for you will need it later.
(Step 2) Download superuser from this link: http://www.mediafire.com/?q3ujsx1m4uq1662.
(Step 3) Download the HTC drivers from this link: http://api.viglink.com/api/click?for...13139469417033
(Step 4) Plug your phone to your computer and put the phone in disk drive mode. Now put the superuser .zip on the sdcard and change the mode to charge only.
(Step 5) Put the phone in usb debugging mode. Do this by: home>menu>settings>applications>development>usb debugging.
Also, enable fastboot. Do this by: home>menu>settings>applications>fastboot.
(Step 6) Got to: http://revolutionary.io/ Go down to the downloads section and select either windows or linux. (depending on your machine) Allow the file to download and proceed to the beta key generation.
(Step 7) Select your operating system (windows or linux) and your device and hboot version.
If you are unsure of your hboot version you can check by powering down your phone and holding volume down and the power button (make sure fastboot is turned off before doing this. just make sure to enable it again once you have checked and have the phone powered back up.)
Now enter your serial key (the code you got from under the battery.) select generate key and it will give you a beta key.
Make sure to keep the window open.
(Step 8) Extract the revolutionary.zip and run revolutionary. It should recognize your device and then ask for the beta key. Enter the beta key it gave you, remember it is case sensitive.
(Step 9) Revolutionary will now work its magic. Let it do its thing and DO NOT interrupt it. It may seem like it is frozen but it sometimes just takes a few minutes.
(Step10) After it gets done with all of its operations, revolutionary will ask if you want it to connect to the internet and download the recovery. type the letter "y" and hit enter. It will do it and then reboot.
(Step11) Now you need to flash the superuser .zip. Disable fastboot and and usb debugging and power down the device. Hold volume down and power at the same time until you get the hboot menu. It may check for an image and shouldn't find one. Just let it do its thing. Volume down and select recovery. It will reboot into recover. Now just volume down to install .zip then select choose .zip from sdcard and choose the su 2.3.6.3 efgh signed.zip and select yes. It will flash it. When it is done just reboot.
Congratulations. You are now rooted with superuser and s-off and have full root access.
Thank you, xda. I am grateful for this forum of great and helpful people, without you guys my android life would would be simply mediocre.

I'm pretty sure this method isn't going to work with 2.2 froyo. If it is 2.2 just use unrevoked.
i'm sorry to keep on askin you question- appreciate your help

k, since i'm on rooted froyo 2.2, how and what options would i choose to upgrade to rooted gingerbread?
i mean could i first do mybackup of apps and data, then manually update via sprint to their latest ruu , then in theory i would lose root and be on the latest sprint update, but then could i follow your instruction to root gingerbread, then after following your instruction in this thread then just restore my apps and data from mybackup- would this work? your help/feedback is certainly appreciated....

For the love of god, if you're already rooted (on 1.6, 2.1, 2.2, 2.3) flash whatever you want. Flash ginger roms, flash froyo roms, flash eclair. Thats the beauty of root. Flash wahtwver the hell rom you want. You Dont have to reroot or something to upgrade your google code.

The only reason to unroot and upgrade would be to get the new Sprint stock GB 2.3.3 ROM to have the latest HBOOT/bootloader. It's something I've been thinking about lately and just trying to debate on when I feel like this hour or so task. Is my thinking anyway, I'm just not sure if it is the best course of action or not (please feel free to post opinions)...
thank you
