They already posted that it does break it. I wish they wouldn't post "midnight" when it is past midnight in every market that the EVO has been released in.

Well going by the latest tweets, to me it seems that it is suggested that you do not do the OTA, because the latest tweet states "checking this OTA to make sure things are still OK" unless there has been a recent development that confirms that the OTA will kill this or all Root methods, right?

That's what I said. It's suspected that the OTA will break it, so don't do it. That's why they've delayed the release of their method because they are still playing with it.
So if we do a master reset, does it clear the update? Or no?
The unrevoked hack was released in the hero thread. not sure if it will work on the evo but if you read the thread, after running the unrevoked script it displays

Code:
adb push ~/Downloads/hero-root/unrevoked /sdcard/unrevoked

did you take the ota?
No I didn't. I was never prompted, and knew better than to seek it out.
I started a fresh thread with my findings. Thanks for the heads up!

i would really like to know if this OTA update breaks the unrevoked root or not? can someone please confirm or deny or should i just do it myself and report the findings?

There was a lot of people asking how to do it since they couldn't figure it out from adwinp's post and any advice was getting lost in the thread.
I just put my own work into a new thread so it was easy for people to find
And this method avoids terminal or adb so is a bit more beginner friendly I was going to wait for the visionary update tomorrow but now thanks to evostance's guide I have permaroot on the day it was found/exploited/invented.

I don't know if VISIONary will just be able to root one Kernel Version, or if it will be able to modify the wpx.ko file depending on your Kernel Version.

Are we supposed to have run VISIONary before we run the scripts? The guide PDF doesn't say to run it until after, but the original forum topic says run it before... because I'm getting that blue screen that does nothing.
Edit: Okay I got it, maybe prefix the part about running the Gscrips with "Open VISIONary, tick "Run on Boot" and then click "Root Now!" before you continue to running the GScript actions.
You need sudo access before running GScripts.
I have longed for this day for 8 days now

Root however you want to, keep us updated on how it works out.
The method in the first post works well. In step 5 after adb shell you will need to input chmod 755 /data/local/GingerBreak or you will get a permission denied error when trying to run gingerbreak.
Just got my Charge from work finally, will root today and keep you guys posted. I will try z4root first to see if it can be done easily.

What does that mean "just got from work"? Were you able to purchase one? I backed down on getting one from Best Buy at the last minute on the Sunday after the missed launch (they were willing to sell it to me), but when I tried to get one the other day, no sale!
Sorry for the delay, z4root does not work nor does superoneclick method. You need to use adb and add in step 5 that was previously posted. Worked for me. Also to clarify i work for verizon and I was able to get one early, I will not be paying for it until I get back from vacation so we do not get flagged in our commission system.
The adb method using Gingerbreak is broken by the OTA update that just came out as some of us more overeager updaters have learned. Here's hoping for a revised method soon!
I figured that ota did more then something usless. I will not be taking it, my phone has been running great rooted for almost 2 weeks.
Anyone know what I have to do to get rid of the ota notification? I'm rooted but the constant asking me to update now or later is annoying.
Well i did the OTA update because I did what I needed with the root. I will try to get a way to re root and get back to you guys.
when will the ota updated charge get a root?
I was screwed from the start. the guy at verizon updated my phone afer he activated in the back.
I ended up taking the ota after I had frozen all the bloat. I'm guessing the OTA fixed some serious battery issues because this morning at work I went from 100% to 60% in one hour with light usage. I don't know if this was a software issue or because my office is fringe 4g... my phone constantly goes back and forth from 3 to 4.
The rest of the day though after I let the ota install, battery life was much much better.
Found this over Droidpolice forum
At step 5 after adb shell you will need to input chmod 755 /data/local/GingerBreak before doing /data/local/GingerBreak this enables the permissions
Has anyone tries this?

Tried and failed with ED02. This was mentioned a few replies up.
Any chance we can get the OP edited?
If you are rooted then go to the build.prop and change all instances of E1 to E2 that should get rid of the notifications as you are tricking the updater into thinking its updated. If you already on E2 you are SOL until a new root method is posted. I got my charge yesterday and Verizon dude updated the phone before I had a chance to tell him not to. I figure I will wait. All I want is root for titanium backup. Ive been happy with this phone.
Congrats to all those looking forward to the 4.1 OTA. I'm happy for you. However, I just got my Razr Maxx HD and I'm happy with it as it is.

Thanks for the response, but I've been told OTAs can't be continually refused (like after the 5th decline, they will update automatically). You seem to be stating that if I decline the OTA, it will not update ever.
If I'm understanding you correctly and I decline the OTA, will it continually prompt me to do it?

Looks like there's a few ways to block OTA updates. Installing a custom rom does, but you want to keep it stock, obviously.
You can edit your build.prop file to "spoof" the current version so it doesn't try to update you. Do a search for editing build.prop, I don't have the exact details on hand.
The specific line is ro.build.fingerprint= but you'll have to wait until someone has the update installed to find out what the new information after the = is.

The leak might not, but the soaktest should. I would imagine it'll be on some phones in the next few days. Just make sure you get the line from someone with the same provider.
Having said all this, I have my older Defy running JB and it's an improvement over ICS. I personally am looking forward to the update. I feel a little like they didn't do as much optimization on ICS as they could have just because they knew JB was coming soon after launch.

Wrong! Wrong! Wrong!
I still had the option to install now or later. I chose later.
Edit for better info: The download, "Update (0.7.2.en.US) has been downloaded and is ready to install."
Can I still root using the prev mentioned method if I install this?
Any other options to prevent the JB OTA?

My error, I meant to say "You have to accept *to install* the download." I did read that it'd download anyway, unless you already had the version spoof in place. If you intend to root, root first, then use VooDoo OTA Rootkeeper (from market) to backup your root before update, and restore after update.

yes, but the problem with that solution is that it will keep downloading the update over and over, it'll just fail the certification process prior to install, and it'll eat your battery doing all the repeated downloads. You are welcome to try it though, and report back your results please.

@Tilde88 or another will have to look at this. I just cant see an update so soon after J. We all know how good LG is at updates as well as source.

Probably didn't, maybe next device hehe. Have to change their process again, possibly; however the command we exploited to escalate our adb commands can't necessarily be blocked/disabled as it is required. They may however drop the privileges that the command has, and take our leverage point away.

I tried to pull it but the issue is the update.bin file is in /data/fota which cannot be accessed and I tried to root to grab it but current root method deletes everything and there is nothing I could do about it. I also tried to get update when I was on Sampwnd firmware but Software Update threw error saying I had modified system.

I actually have updated. The update is rather quite nice and super snappy. You can now also send .gifs through stock messenger. I signed up on the wife's phone for the beta as well that's where/how I will grab the .bin

I have already grabbed the bin but its completely useless for now because It can't be flashed at all. signature verification failed and missing footer. fota app on phone does something to bin file to convert it to flashable bin file but I still could not figure it out. But I wonder if anything on .bin file could be helpful for root
EDIT: I grabbed .bin file for S8 though not S8+ and I grabbed it directly from FOTA server.
I've updated to Oreo, however I can flash TWRP through Odin, but going in recovery only shows stock recovery. Haven't tried to flash CF-AutoRoot with Odin.
