Can I block the 4.1 OTA (new developments!!!) - RAZR HD Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Congrats to all those looking forward to the 4.1 OTA. I'm happy for you. However, I just got my Razr Maxx HD and I'm happy with it as it is.
If I root using these instructions: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1943851 will that stop my Maxx from getting the pending OTA?
If not, what else will I need to do?
Thanks in advance to all willing to help.

OTA aren't automatic... You have to accept the download. So just don't accept it. Easy enough.

Thanks for the response, but I've been told OTAs can't be continually refused (like after the 5th decline, they will update automatically). You seem to be stating that if I decline the OTA, it will not update ever.
If I'm understanding you correctly and I decline the OTA, will it continually prompt me to do it?

Looks like there's a few ways to block OTA updates. Installing a custom rom does, but you want to keep it stock, obviously.
You can edit your build.prop file to "spoof" the current version so it doesn't try to update you. Do a search for editing build.prop, I don't have the exact details on hand.
The specific line is ro.build.fingerprint= but you'll have to wait until someone has the update installed to find out what the new information after the = is.

The leak might not, but the soaktest should. I would imagine it'll be on some phones in the next few days. Just make sure you get the line from someone with the same provider.
Having said all this, I have my older Defy running JB and it's an improvement over ICS. I personally am looking forward to the update. I feel a little like they didn't do as much optimization on ICS as they could have just because they knew JB was coming soon after launch.

Wrong! Wrong! Wrong!
I still had the option to install now or later. I chose later.
Edit for better info: The download, "Update (0.7.2.en.US) has been downloaded and is ready to install."
Can I still root using the prev mentioned method if I install this?
Any other options to prevent the JB OTA?

My error, I meant to say "You have to accept *to install* the download." I did read that it'd download anyway, unless you already had the version spoof in place. If you intend to root, root first, then use VooDoo OTA Rootkeeper (from market) to backup your root before update, and restore after update.

Not sure the reluctance to dl jb. It's faster than Ics, and you can keep root.

JB is nothing but pure improvement. Absolutely no downsides. That's why people are foaming at the mouth for it. And 0.7.2.en.US is just an ICS update.

From another forum, I found this advice:
"I renamed my OTACERTS.ZIP file to otacerts.zip.bak ... and this stopped updating on my DI2.
The OTACERTS.ZIP file can only be modified by ROOT users, and it's located in: system/etc/security/otacerts.zip"
Would this work?

yes, but the problem with that solution is that it will keep downloading the update over and over, it'll just fail the certification process prior to install, and it'll eat your battery doing all the repeated downloads. You are welcome to try it though, and report back your results please.

I just updated my rooted Epic via OTA and it went through without any problems. I've also confirmed that I'm still rooted.
I've read that if you have removed any Sprint apps after rooting you might have errors during the updates.
BTW....my root method was performing the one click method shown in the sticky forum.

So many threads about this already but it all depends on what root method you have installed. IF you have noobls kernel then you must return to stock if you have joey 2.2.4 then just run the update
yah i got some errors during the update.... what should i do?
i deleted a few sprints apps.
You need to restore most of the stock Sprint apps you removed.

Here's instructions how.
Yeah I tried to update.. It was the samsung media hub update. Is that the update u were getting?
I did the kernal update.. so I guess I got to get it back to stock... I'm not looking forward to it because I had a hard time flashing it. But its ok...

Question about installing OTA

I was supposed to be part of the soak but for some reason my phone is invisible to the Moto update servers and they cannot push the update to me. I have the update file someone gave me a link to download. I have two questions about how to install it.
1. Since I am rooted can I just put it where Moto would have downloaded it to and then my phone will update it like it got the OTA?
or
2. If I install it off the SD card will it just do recovery first and then display injured android man, and then have to reselect the zip package again to finish instlling the update?
I would prefer method 1 if possible. If one of the devs or a knowledgeable person could respond I would appreciate it. I'll give Moto about six more hours to get this straightened out, otherwise I am tired of waiting to get my Atrix 2 onto ICS.
Hi. I don't suppose the end result would be different, whatever method you choose.

Where does moto put the zip file so I can try putting it where the OTA would have downloaded to? Then when I go to check for update it should say an update is ready for installing. Do they put it in the cache directory? Someone who knows please let me know. Thanks.

AFAICT this seems true, you I could run a leak#2/soak based ROM as a second system (first system too?) with boot menu manager by following the guides:

Yes, it is /cache... but I think you also need the .crc file of the same name along with the actual .zip - not positive though. And, it can take a little while for it to recognize it - but I have done it that way, by putting it in the cache folder - also, it will disappear if you reboot.
But, you do know what you are doing, right? There is no fxz yet...
---------- Post added at 08:17 AM ---------- Previous post was at 08:12 AM ----------
Edit.. since it's the same files as leak#2.. for the .crc file, you could just make your own if you don't have it:
-Just create a new blank file with notepad++
-Add this as the first and only line (no blank lines after)
Code:
3114145323
-Then, save it as Blur_Version.55.13.25.MB865.ATT.en.US.crc

Yes, I know what I am doing. I used to develop roms for LG P999 but have not played around with my Atrix much. LG does their OTA updates very differently and downloads them in pieces all over the place so no way to use the method I am suggesting for the Atrix. I don't care about being able to fxz back as I just want the phone on official ICS; but I do appreciate your caveat. Thanks for the reply.
If anyone has the .crc file please upload somewhere so I can grab it. Thanks.

Thanks. I will give them a few hours to get to work and see if my phone is visible to the update servers now that I have done an FDR as they requested. If so, I will just let the OTA do its thing. If not I will manually update my phone.
Also I do not think you can be rooted to update the check will prevent you from updating, also you have to be as close as stock as you can..... Meaning all bloat must be unfroze.....
One more note there is a Q&A section now so try to post questions there.....

Could the fact that you're not in the US, are now unlocked and on another network have something with failure to get the OTA!?
You can be rooted. The update asserts only check for the original system files to make sure they have not been modified or deleted. It does not check for extra files like superuser.apk or busybox. Rooting is not a problem. I set superuser to OTA protect and it worked. After the update my ICS was still rooted without me having to root it.
For the person that wants the leak the OTA is leak # 2. It is exactly the same. Just find thread with download link for leak # 2 and you are good to go.
Would installing beats audio drivers using the app be considered tampering with system files? And would it prevent me from receiving a ota?

Sorrry but what mean FDR? because I'm in that situation: Im not in US and I have the phone unlocked, and I'm using it with other operator... Is just ended the soak test?... because the phone say me "Your phone is updated, Is not required a update in this moment" (Translated from Spanish) when I look in Settings -> About the phone -> Update, and I'm have the system version 55.13.25.MB865.ATT.en.US.

You have to be someone that was invited and filled out a survey about six weeks ago. If you are you need to go to the Motorola Private forum. Go see how others are requesting it (not allowed to really talk about it). FDR means Factory Data Reset and it is an option in Privacy in Settings. It erases all your user settings, app data and you are back to square one like when the phone came out of the box. For many people it was required to get what they wanted.
If you were not invited don't worry. Usually the official rollout of the OTA will come within a week of a soak test if no problems are found. It is the same as leak # 2 so just look on this forum and you can install that manually. The release is solid so I see no reason the OTA won't be going live to all AT&T Atrix 2 devices very soon.

Ditto here too, spent half the day trying to figure this out. I noticed some DNS errors coming from the phone while doing the update. Maybe they have figured out a way to block the 0.7.2. update for just us? Anyone know of a way to load just the 6 meg update to the phone manually and force the update?
Some behaviors I've noticed:
1. erase data 4G only get error mentioned above: "Please try again later"
2. turn on wifi (and 4G off) get no message but no update.
3. turn off wifi and "download suspended" appears (and never changes)
4. reboot to 4G only, get "An unexpected error has occured. Please try again later."
Stuck.
UPDATE:
My router shows a request to ws-cloud434-blur.svcmot.com from my phone. If I change my DNS to OpenDNS (hijackers) and try to update I see references to the "website not found" garbage that OpenDNS injects. Unfortunately I dismantled my squid setup so I can't see the exact url that is being attempted only the DNS error when OpenDNS injects it. I'm tempted to bring squid up just so I can figure out what is actually being requested on the update server.
Yea I can update to the latest via the computer, but then I cannot restore root so guess I will be waiting. I piicked a great time to do this ha ha.

BTW, I did throw squid back in the full urls:

Both are POSTS and both return "file not found" when I try them from the browser.

But... I think it did. I just updated two devices using the Device Update tool. This is from memory but...
1) Connect, right click your taskbar and click check for updates.
2) It will say there is a 6MB download available to go to 0.7.2, accept it.
3) Updater downloads it, reboots your phone, applies it, etc.
4) Once fully booted, it prompts again, there's a new update available.
[do your rooting here]
5) Accept this update. It will download now a much larger file (200+ MB if i recall) to get you to the latest version
6) It reboots, applies the update, reboots, etc.
Unfortunately, I was too eager to get on the latest and greatest ROM before dropping by, so I did it from a vanilla new-phone upgrade. I did not root the device.

Lmao wow. That's the most pitiful update ever. Seriously, couldn't they have waited until there was something more substantial and then included Canadian roaming in THAT update. As always though, Verizon is dumber than a bag of hammers...

Hey guys, I have a question about this update,
My friend has the S3 for whom I safe- rooted, debloated and whatnot. Now that this update came, my friend tried to update but to no avail. She is adamant about the fact that Verizon definitely has something important hidden in the update, despite me trying to tell her otherwise, and figured that she couldn't install the update because she was rooted.
Naturally, I fully unroot her entire phone, uninstall root-only apps, and try the update, but it doesn't work. When the phone reboots for installation, the installation bar loads for a bit, hangs, then just says "error" and does not update.
Anyone know what the problem could be? Normally I wouldn't care so much, but if Android 4.4 is actually coming to the S3 then I don't want her not to have it, and I can already tell it's not going to work if this update doesn't either.
Thank you so much in advance.

Some of the bloatware you removed likely had to be present on the phone in order for the update to take place. Unless you are sure someone is never going to go back to stock without flashing an ODIN tar image and wiping their phone clean, best to just freeze bloatware with Titanium Backup. That way you can just unfreeze it in order to go back to full stock. Unless you have a list of the bloatware you removed and can somehow sideload them back in, you will unfortunately have to flash her phone to full stock VRUCML1 and wipe it clean.

That way you can just unfreeze it in order to go back to full stock. Unless you have a list of the bloatware you removed and can somehow sideload them back in, you will unfortunately have to flash her phone to full stock VRUCML1 and wipe it clean.

Ah, I see, next time I'm around her I'll re-root it and backup all her stuff with titanium backup, flash the VRUCML1 and factory reset, then restore everything and see if it works.
Strangely enough, when the same update for my Verizon Note 2 came out, I was able to update while rooted even though I unsinatalled theexact same system apps I did on her phone. How strange.
Nonetheless, thank you so much.
I have a question for you all. I took the OTA update for 4.3 when it came out but after that I rooted my gs3 Verizon phone again successfully. Now I also took this last update and now lost root on my phone. I tried to reroot the phone but it fails now. There error I get on safestrap is something about the addresses not being able to be found. Can anyone help me reroot my phone so my apps like titanium will work again?
Thanks

Ok, since I'm not doing the update, how do I get rid of this nagging reminder popping up that I need to update?

I was able to maintain root on the OTA update by having OTA Survival Mode checked on SuperSU.

Looks like the link is broken. I searched the forum and came up empty. Anyone know what the link should've been or how to disable this junk?

I have not yet updated to this new patch yet, am I still able to install saferoot as directed on the thread for it or do I need to do something special first?

New TMO FOTA update

So I just got a notification for my update. If any developer wants it just let me know and I will send you a link to my Google Drive.
Does it tell you what the update version is. That is very helpful to them. My guess is its J which they have already.

Really? I didn't check or know how. I used the kdz for 10i a couple of weeks ago and I took the 10j update. Rooted from there and have only been flashing 10j roms. That's why i thought it was new. How do i check?
If so I feel retarded, haha. I thought I was helping out.

If you click on the notification it should give you more info on it (Haven't actually clicked on one since JB so don't quote me on that lol) or you can pull the update from /cache and upload it to google drive and send me the link so I can look at it. (Dont put the link in the forums cause people tend to flash first, question later why they leap before they look).

K, I'll send it to you shortly. Man i thought I was special! Hahaha.
But wouldn't it be kind of weird for me to get that update? Since I'm already on 10j?
I just sent it to you check your p.m.

I just checked my pm. Didn't see a message other than my old ones. But I'm guessing its a disappointment for me?
@Tilde88 or another will have to look at this. I tried numerous ways to extract this (I'm on Windows and am not familiar with messing with python on it, keep getting Command "bsdiff" is not valid, don't have dual boot on Windows 10 for a Ubuntu OS to do android related things yet, haven't had any motivation for anything these days) but I at least see it checks in the updater script if your system is NRD90M before it proceeds.
I just cant see an update so soon after J. We all know how good LG is at updates as well as source.

Ok thank you man. I'm sorry I didn't mean to stir this up.
Could be a security patch.

The zip was downloaded today by OTA. Hopefully not security for preventing root but security for bettering the system.

But remember with OTA updates people get them at different rates.

You are right, but I also remember with 10j, everyone seemed to get it within a day on TMO.
But you may be right if another one is out.
What size is the zip file?
It's strange why I would see an update on my phone. I am on 10j everything (bootloaded and all) and still got that update.
whats the model after the update
This was the update i took. Also, you can still root just fine.
