alright im on attblue, and i refuse to upgrade. their new plans blow compared to mine, however ive a question.
i know att now imei checks phones for pocketpcs and adds 30$ data if it matches, i know it detects my hermes and displays it in billing control panel.
however, if i slapped a universal on a attplan would they be able to tell it was a pocketpc or could i get away without data?
any input from people would be..very useful.
try putting your sim card in a regular phone then add the data
oh, would they now. How do you know this? what device have you tested it on, and was it international based or an att branded one.
i ask because it seems they can't identify devices that arent ATT

I talk to us cellular a few weeks ago and they said I could activate a HTC touch Pro without the data package. Well, I bought one on ebay and went to activate the phone and then they said I had to have a data package. Is there anyway to activate the htc touch pro as a phone only? I would still like to use the wifi, gps and and sync my calendar to my computer. I tried to find info on the web but have found nothing that really helped me.
I think US Cellular is a CDMA network, which means, unlike GSM where you just swap the SIM card from an existing phone, US Cellular actually has to activate your phone for you for your account to be active. So this isn't really a phone issue, its really a matter of whether US Cellular will permit you to use a smartphone w/o a data plan.
Call back a few times asking the same thing, sometimes different customer service reps will give you different answers/service.
Yes, us cellular reps seems to give different answers and it is a CDMA. Is it possible to activate the phone without them knowing it is a smart phone and just activate the phone option. I would need to know how to activate the phone before hand and know what option I need to fill out. I would give them the dec number and than ask for the number I need to make the phone work.
Not sure if this rings true for CDMA, but the IMEI number for GSM phones identify each phone uniquely (manufacturer, model, plus unique code for each phone). So if you need to give them a similiar number for a CDMA phone (its called the ESN number I think), they'll know right away if its a smartphone (if they cared to look it up).
Best bet is probably keep calling until you get a nice rep that won't ask too many questions.

After much searching I found lots of 'no you can't's, but I haven't found any posts that are recent, ...in the last 6 months.
I have a Sprint Touch Pro 2 that I successfully got working on Page Plus. I would like to get it on my folks' Verizon family plan. I called an agent and they said if it doesn't have a Verizon logo on it, it's not possible.
I question this, but I've found no one of late posting about this.
I think the phone will work on Verizon, it may just need the ESN number activated on their network.
I remember someone here or at PPCGeeks activated it for me on PagePlus, is there anyone/any way to activate it on Verizon?
I like the phone, I just don't need data, so I don't want a regular Verizon phone.

Yes, you can get it activated on VZW... The only problem is this... you can't do it legally or ethically... It would involve doing things against VZW's rules as well as the law... and you would need a "broken" TP2 (or other VZW phone) to do it... But that aside... the reason it worked with PagePlus is because they allow outside phones on their network, with giving you the responsibility to make it work on their network.. VZW is vey explicit that they will NOT allow anyone elses phones on their network (same with Sprint)... They are the worse 2 when it comes to that IMO..... Sorry to the bad news.... But sometimes that is how it goes.... Maybe you can post an ad on here offering to trade someone yours for the VZW version.. or maybe Craigslist?

Trading for a verizon phone won't work, as then I'll have to get data.
My bottom line question:
I need a smart phone, but I NEVER need data, wifi is always available for me. But I guess there is no way to have an Android phone on a Verizon network, without a data plan?
Not legally anyways, that's one of the downsides to using CDMA, the carrier has much greater control over what kind of phone you use. Thankfully they can't control the Rom/OS you run on it .
You need a Verizon rep that knows what they're doing, it can be done.

I'm hoping this will be figured out since it's a major feature that will never get to be used.
I for one am using the ATT Titan unlocked and on a different carrier (Telus) and yet when switching it on it still asks me to contact ATT or dial 611 to use tethering.
I highly doubt calling ATT from Canada will allow me to use this feature. I also doubt Telus (who doesn't support non Telus phones) will be able to help me either. I also doubt HTC can do anything.
There has to be a workaround for this.
I have got the same problem using an AT&T Samsung Focus S on Rogers. there seem to be no way to remove this unless you get it dev unlocked and play with the settings.
but even that is impossible now since Chevron Unlock has been down for a while now.
its actually a feature i used almost everyday. im gonna give it a few days, if there is still no solution, im going back to my galaxy s2. as much as i hate android, at least when you pay 500$ for a phone, you can what u want with it.
I would think that for HTC devices, that you could use the HTC Connection Setup app to configure your device for your carrier and that should point it in the right direction.
Most other manufacturer's provide a similar tool for their phones and I would assume using those tools would also configure your device to work specifically on other carriers.
Otherwise, it would be something that you'd have to contact HTC/Samsung/LG to see if they can provide a tool or fix to configure your device properly.
I doubt they would help since they sell devices to carriers, they will tell you to contact carriers. I downloaded the Samsung Wireless manager but even though i use Rogers APN, it seems stuck on AT&T APN for the Internet connection sharing.

I have the same thing on my HTC titan from at&t - amazing phone but the tethering is a bummer --> starting to think I should have got the HTC ultimate from Brazil - it has the same bands as the at&t one but doesn't have any of the carrier branding on it.
I'm going to give it some time - once interop unlock is available im sure someone will find a way around the at&t lockout - or at the very least we should be able to flash the Brazil rom onto our phones

I'm hoping to get a smartphone (either a Moto-G or Nexus 5) without having to pay for a data plan. Yes, I know there are dozens of topics asking whether or not this can be done; I've read everyone--that's why I'm making this new thread.
There are a lot of different things I see stated on ways to get around AT&T automatic application of expensive data-plans when they detect that you're using a smartphone. Some people have said that all you have to do is turn off 3G Data Use from the menu of the new phone BEFORE inserting a new SIM card, and then insert the old dumphone sim card and everything will work. Some people make vague allusions to changing the IMIE--to which some people claim that's illegal, and others claim AT&T or random clerks at Radio Shack will do this for you upon request. Still others claim that all you need to do is install a "data blocker" program onto the smartphone before switching SIM cards, and it will do the trick.
The basic goal seems to be "hiding" the IMEI number from AT&T.
So, my question: how does AT&T recognize the IMEI number? Will they see it only if the phone is active on their 3G/4G/LTE networks? Or do they see it "through" the normal dumbphone calling networks?
My apologies if this is a stupid question. I really don't know anything about phones are anything about non-PC electronics or software in general. Basically, I'd like a smartphone but refuse to pay an exhorbitant monthly fee for a feature I'd never use (wifi is everywhere I go), and am not in a position where I can switch carriers, and it's like I'm part of a(n evidently sizable) demographic that no one wants to market to.
If times haven't changed too much from when I tried the same thing 2 years ago, you should just be able to request that all data on your line be blocked. I would try calling them before you switch the SIM to the smartphone and ask for all data to be disabled to your line, then swap the SIM. I would also leave the data turned off on the smartphone for good measure. This is basically how I got around your same issue with AT&T, and it doesn't have to necessarily come down to illegally changing the IMEI or "hiding" the IMEI from the carrier. Eventually they'll cross-check your device and figure out it's a smartphone and add your data. But to my knowledge, the adding of the data is all automatically done by computers; so if the system sees that all data is disabled for you, it shouldn't attempt to add anything.

New here, don't see an up to date thread on this issue. I moved and Verizon has no towers here, so I had to cancel. I'm lucky to get a single bar of 1x or maybe 3G. Then it cuts off. Anyway, AT&T is about the only choice here, tower coverage wise, so I was looking into it. I popped in an old SIM card from a friend's AT&T phone, and it recognized it, didn't seem to request an unlock code. My contract has been up with V for months, not sure if that has anything to do with it.
Poking around, seems like basically the issue is some providers use GSM towers (like the rest of the world's standard) but a few like V use CDMA. This info seems a little outdated, probably because not a lot of folks care about the older Razrs anymore. AT&T seems to have upgraded a lot of their service to LTE now. I might pop into AT&T tomorrow to see what I can come up with. My GF has a family plan thingy going so to add this old XT912 would only be another $20 / m.
I just thought I'd throw it out there, and ask you guys what sort of problems I'm going to have? I've read I might get signal, but no data. I've read that the physical radio operates on a different frequency and might connect to GSM but might not be stable. Just wanted to hear your thoughts in laymans terms. I'm pretty new to phone modding, but it's interesting for sure.

Just looked up more about the physical issues with phone radios. Stumbled across this app named GetRIL
Read on other sites that some phones are Radio Interface Layer locked, which I think is just the physical limitation of the phone. After the FCC changed some things, like forcing carriers to unlock phones after service is complete, most newer users won't have this issue. Anyway, it's interesting reading.
