flash a nice rom, and then go to :
http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/
and download the right one.
Good luck! Most, if not all roms will work with that particular app, which is the best one imo. try barnacle too (in market), if you want.

He said he can't discover it with any device, so how would he do any of what you told him to do?
@OP: Make sure to download and install the proper version for your G1 and for your Android version.
this is a stupid question, is your phone wifi on?
Wifi tether works and is so awesome. I have cyanogen mod and 3 g1 with this and windows 7 mac unix linux all work just fine.
turn on your wifi, then turn on wifi tether and then activate tether and then give permission to work on root. pop up will come up and make it permanent.

Just run it. It is hosted on Google Code.
http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/downloads/list
thanks alot.
Download the 1.6 .APK since that has been proven to work best with our phones.
that was also my next question because there was like 100 versions on there, once again thanks, i just downloaded the 1.6 version as we speak.
Just be careful when using the Tether. Even though there is a setting to password protect the network, you can't actually get it to work (unless I am doing it wrong) and others can still join. You can manually cut off the connection should someone join the network. A notification will pop-up on the phone telling you if a device has connected to the network.
If you use access control, no one can connect without you enabling the connection.
Is there a wired tether app that doesn't need root?
nevermind, I did a search online and found a great app, pdanet and got it on the android market.
easy tether seems to work just as well for me and getting access to https for only $10 seems MUCH better than pdanet's $25
I was thinking I downloaded the freeware version of pdanet, but maybe it will end after a trial time, hmmm.
free pdanet doesn't allow most sites.

Damn=(. I was able to use hotmail, this site, facebook, zaptv, craigslist, speedtest, but didn't check other ones. Those just happen to be the ones I was on at the time.
But isn't it the phone's internet that is providing all the data and not the pdanet. That is just a program that is allowing the bridge of information. It's not an actual server that is screening things out. I really doubt that pdanet does anything other than connect the wire. I will check again, but maybe someone else can chime in on that.
the free one doesn't allow https or some such thing if i remember correctly.
Yeah it blocks the port required for secure HTTPS sites (think banking sites or the checkout page at online stores for instance), paid version unlocks that. It also lets you SMS right from the computer and it allows you to tether over USB, Bluetooth, or WiFi... Maybe I'm blind but Easy Tether only seems to indicate on their site that they support USB?
I just need to connect my computer with usb wire and surf my normal email and social sites once in a great while. So far it does that at 2.2mbps. That is plenty for me.
Wired internet sharing is built into the ROM. Just connect with USB and select "connection sharing."

Oh kewl, so I didn't even need to download pdanet, or do we still need some kind of program? What interesting is, when I choose that option it shuts the internet connection down, so maybe it is blocked in the rom, but when I uncheck it so it isn't sharing, then pdanet works fine, and my internet returns to the phone, hehe.

Wait, have you tried this on the rooted rom? It's disabled in the stock release, as noted, but I've always received the error 67 code or whatever when I try to use it. Same happened with my Hero. "Registration failure. your pcs vision username and/or password may be incorrect." blah blah blah. I assumed this was because you have to pay for USB tethering or whatever through Sprint for them to allow you to use the login credentials or whatever. Either that or the username and password are, in fact, wrong. (defaults to firstlast @ sprintpcs.com)

Wait a sec... I'm trying to USB wired tether as well, rooted via Toast's method using OMJ's 2.1 Eclair ROM and I haven't been able to locate or activate wired tether. I also have the latest version of Sync installed on my pc. Would you please give a few more details on how to enable it?

Just use that, it's the same as wireless tether for root users, just wired
I use Unrevoked to instant root and the install WifiTether and bam wireless tethering and the phone is stock, root is temporary. If you reboot then just hit the unrevoked to root again.
Unrevoked
WifiTether
when ever you get error code 67, that just means that you are not signed up for the sprint hotspot feature to allow you to tether. So you need to atleast do the unrevoked root hack, so you can get superuser permissions. Simple as cake, and is removed when you restart(the unrevoked hack, not the superuser, so you are able to still use wireless tether)
I have yet to root and the built in Internet Sharing option works for me. I have HTC Sync installed btw.

Hey Dwertz, if I use unrevoke and install the wifi tether, when I boot again and the temporary root is gone will the app stop working or do I just need to use unrevoke just to install more apps that need root? Thanks.
Best tethering option for a rooted samsumg captivate?

Download non-US version of Samsung driver and then connect your phone via USB to PC. Select PC Internet for the USB setting on your phone and you're tethered. US verison of Samsung driver does not work.
android Wi-fi Tether is what I use.
http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/
The US captivate version does not have a wired tehering capability. (no modem). I use wireless-tethering available off of a google code project... The latest expirimental works great for me! Pm me and I will send links and post here when I am home.

i was using PDAnet and recent (finally) installed Samsung's Kies on my laptop so i could check for firmware updates,
Kies has tethering as an option, and oddly, my laptop seems to browse at faster speeds than with PDAnet

Wi-fi is easiest option, otherwise you can download for 32bit this driver for USB tether: http://drivers.softpedia.com/progDo...SB-Driver-for-Windows-x86-Download-96692.html
64 bit driver also found on softpedia.

Linux user confused.
I run linux on my laptops, HP i7 and Acer Ferrari. Had plugged in Samsung Captivate via USB for file transfer, networking detected phone and connected (first time I wasn't aware networking had used usb0 (phone) instead of my WiFi connection; eating up my 3G data). Tried later on my Acer Ferrari at work; connects within a few seconds of being plugged in. I don't have PDAnet or any other special USB program installed.

I used the wonder and did eventually get to working tether but it doesn't give me option to install nonmarket apps directly from the phone; I have to dl them to the PC and install.
I tried to set it up with several different ways but no others seemed to work.
What suggestions do u have for most simple unblocking so installs can happen right at phone?
Thanx for the help! It was fun to get this far!

It's a known issue. Most ppl experience of battery pulling.
Besides the fact that it is very difficult to setup security (WEP???) and effectively block others, mostly brain dead iphones, to automatically connect to your phone, it is not really not worth the trouble. I fired up this Android Tethering on a busy Airport and immediately got more than dozen iPhone connected to it. The build-in access control can control who has the access to the internet but incapable of kick the ofenders off your phone. Battery was dead in less than 30 minutes.
There is now a new solution that enables native wireless AP (WPA2 capable) in addition to the USB tethering (still my favorite) in Captivate Android Development forum. Unfortunately you have to flash to a custom kernel in order to restore the wireless AP capability that was stripped off by request of AT&T.
so no other option for wifi tethering besides the custom kernel huh?
I really want to tether my iPad to it to show off to my friends at work

I'm using wireless_tether_2_0_5-pre7.apk and have NEVER had an issue with my phone locking up. I wonder if people are forgetting to turn off WiFi and bluetooth on their phones, which may interfere with the tethering process.
As to encryption, setting it up was very simple and I've never had anyone else leeching off of my wireless.
so I uninstalled my version, which I tried pre5, and pre8, none worked. Uninstalled, rebooted phone, installed pre7, didn't work, uninstalled ATM rebooted phone, then turned it back on and it works.. Weird...

the custom kernel isn't as bad as it sounds (all it does is to uncommented a few lines in the init.rc). But it does require Odin to flash it which is a hassle or error prone.

Nope. I used pre8 and don't have wifi or BT on. It crashed once. And refuse to work many times. And I have reboot the phone inorder to completely shut off the tethering (the adhoc network is still visible even if you turn off the tethering).
Hey Guys, just rooted the Photon Q, was wondering how i could set up the wifi tether? What have you guys been using?
I want wifi tether not usb, and no switching roms
also, is there a specific version of the wifi tether for root users app youre using, with specific settings?
I'm on 4.0.4 Build Number: 7.7.1Q-6_SPR-125_ASA-14
Thanks!
I used to use this one on stock rooted.
Edit - I haven't tried it on the Q, but this app is old school but always got the job done in the past.

Ya using the app now but not working, it sends out infrastructure wifi, but nothing seems to actually get internet from it...
Using these settings
Change Device-Profile" and choose "Generic ICS/JB (wlan0)" then choose "Change Setup-Method" and hit "Netd (master)". And also MSS Clamping and Routing fix checked. Nothing gets internet from it
Hm, I can't remember the particular settings I was using... I did have to make some changes to get it to work infrastructure mode, I do remember that. It would always provide internet access, but the default settings would only send out an ad-hoc network. I didn't have to make any changes per se to get the internet tether to work, I only had to make changes (similar to the ones you made) which enabled infrastructure mode.
This is assuming we are talking about the Play Store app. I haven't used the other app I linked on my Q, give it a shot.

hmm, interesting people. I dont know why ,why haha ??
you cant remove it,because in settings app, it exist. this is huge work.
you can simply disable it, but when tap on wifi on status bar or settings, app will force close.
You need some mechanical skills for it.... Get a screw driver.... And open your device.. And remove wifi hardware....
Hope this helps

samsung galaxy.
not tethering, though, actual wifi needs to be disabled/ remove/blocked
1st Method
If you have root access... Then you can uninstall wifi related apps...... And libraries also...
2nd Method
Open your device with screw driver. And remove wifi hardware...
3rd Method (for only experts)
I also wanted to remove wifi from my device.... I threw it from 2nd floor.... And after that wifi stooped working.... And all other things are fine.... But not everyone is lucky as me... So you can also test your luck....
Important Warning :: I'll not be responsible for any damage to your device.... Do It on your risk
