Android G1 Cant get pass goggle activation - Android Software/Hacking General [Developers Only]

I've just bought an G1 off craiglist and it work fine for a couple day. Then the went crazy and keep restarting and stuck on the android loading page. I then reset the phone but now i cant seem to get pass the goggle signup page.
I've read several tutorial on here on how to get pass this with adb. But when i tried to check if my phone is running rc29 or rc30 by using the command
<enter>reboot<enter>
the phone does not reboot. Does this mean I'm using rc30 and there is no way to get pass this beside getting the data plan?
Thank you for your help

cant you just hit all 4 corners in a clockwise motion? thats how it works on the moto droid.

I tried that n it doesnt seem to do anything.

BY PASS ACTIVATION SCREEN
At starting screen touch corners of the screen clockwise
start from Top Left, Top Right, Bottom Right, Bottom Left.
Do not touch the the DROID icon
just to make sure were clear

yea I already tried that for like 10 min and nothing...read an thread on here that this method does not work for g1 runing donut or dream.
any other suggestion?
thank you

You could try manually updating the phone to 1.6 via your SD Card. If my memory serves me, you can temporarily bypass the signup screen in newer versions of Android (I may be wrong on that, someone correct me if I am).

have you tried getting into telnet?

You are correct sir, 1.6(donut) you can definatly bypass it, but i dont think your contacts will sync until you do, just as if you were installing the latest CyanogenMod <--- (runs eclair FW 2.1), you kinda gotta wait a bit for the google account thing to show up, when i first flashed i flipped my wig cuz all my contact were "gone" but like 6 mins into playing with the new Cyan release, it just popped up. (you may have to install the google addons if your on test 7)
Oh, and on CM 5.0.7 test 7 (latest current release as of 5/19/2010) it can also be bypassed or "skipped" rather, to be done when you descide to do it

Safe Mode on G1

From androidcommunity.com, not sure how useful.
found a way to enter "safe mode" which will bypass the initial gmail signin and allow you to straight to the good stuff with out activating via google. You can also bypass the security drawing pattern.
1. Power off your device
2. While device is powering back on press and hold the "menu" key, keep holding it past the G1 and android splash screen.
Phone will boot all the way to the main screen and display "safe mode" in lower left corner.
I have confirmed that data is still fully operational and all of my downloaded programs.
http://androidcommunity.com/forums/f41/g1-safe-mode-2565/
Which firmware are you running? I'm on ota rc30 and I can't repro. I wonder if this was fixed in an update.
I should say, I can get into safe mode, but I can't get past the initial google sign-in screen.
Bypassing Google Activation is not Possible in any Version
Bypassing the Drawing Pattern was Patch in RC30
For for RC30 user they are out of luck.

Shouldn't it help to start the phone with non T-mobile sim card?
Why u require to bypass Activation Process
You can Unlock the Phone and add your GPRS Setting and Activate the Phone Officially on your Carrier.
Well... Don't you still need valid T-mobile sim-card for the first boot after unlocking?
The real reason is, I tried to use my G1 without G1 data plan (-$25 cheaper . It was Ok, I could use WiFi for internet, but I made a factory reset and was not able to pass that activation after - can not use WiFi for that.
You require Valid TMobile SIM only for Activation becuase GPRS Setting Preset in Phone.
But if you have Any other Non TMobile SIM Card Press Menu Button this will popup APN Setting Just Press it again Press Menu Button this will popup New APN Just Add your Carrier APN, Mobile Country Code and Mobile Network Code And reboot. If you can see G or E or 3G on top Bar your Data is Activated Just follow with your Google A/c and Password and you did it

I was able to get into safe mode via holding down the Menu Key while booting. Open Home was giving me issues and i was unable to get past the "Android" splash screen. Booted to safe mode via the initial instructions and was able to uninstall open home. I'm using JF's 1.5 ADP w/LucidREM App2Sd image. So the "safe mode" works in the newest release. I can't account for getting past the drawing pattern thing since i don't lock my phone and not sure about the activation thing. But it does boot to safe mode

In safe mode, only stock apps are loaded. I can post the whole log if anyone wants me to. And yes, its much like windows' safe mode, in a sense.
My wife's g1 is stuck in safe mode.
I have tried the holding menu+power buttons till it boots thing but nothing.
I flashed back to jk 1.41 and nothing.
Any ideas on how to get out of this safe mode.

what do you mean? if you hold the menu + power button, it puts it into safe mode..
boot by holding the power only? also if you know how to use adb hook up your phone and do the following in a cmd prompt
Code:
adb logcat
we may be able to find something causing it, even if it is a little late. and by jk 1.41 you mean jf right?

I'm sorry, Yeah I meant Jesus freak. If by adb you mean having the setup to develop on the pc then nope, don't have that.
Now I did search this forums and did a google search and found out that if I power off the phone then press and hold both "menu & power red button" I was supposed to get rid of the safe mode, I should say get out of safe mode.
When the phone got stuck in safe mode she was running on of the first rom from JF for 1.5. I also read that if the holding down the bittons thing didn't work I should either reflash or master reset. Is master reset what you do from the phones settttings?
Maybe I'm just missing something. I'm usually not this dumb @ following directions lol. I got on my phone one of the hero rom w apps2sd so I have done some major things (for me) to the phone (this on a different phone. My phone lol). But this got me scratching my head.
Thanks for replying man.
* update
I did the "return to master settings" thing. The phone rebooted and went to the console then I did an alt+w and the thing rebooted to the first activation with the dang "safe mode" still there. Sorry if I'm having a hard time explaining this.
She don't have that new spl. Do you think she can run a non hero rom with it? I want to try and get the new radio and maybe the spl and that newer recovery image in her phone and just maybe a newer 1.5 stable non hero rom and see what happens, eventhou I think non of it has anything to do with phone being stuck on safe mode.

Its no problem I'm pretty sure I understand what your saying. Your menu key isn't, stuck is it? The new SPL by Haykuro will work on any almost any ROM, Hero or not. Flashing the radio might help and probably should be done. You can also try to start from step one and go through the steps to re-root it, but DO NOT PUT THE NEW SPL ON YOUR PHONE IF YOU ARE GOING TO DO THIS. downgrading the radio and/or un-rooting while the new spl is still on the phone will brick your phone.
I don't know how the safe mode is persisting across a master-reset (Alt + W)
If you are under warranty or insurance, it might be a good idea to unroot and restore original settings, and have them look at it.
You should also wait for more input by some of the community members here as I'm still inexperienced with Android.
The wife is desperate. She went to our buddy on the tmo store and he tried everything they know on it ofcourse then he found out it was a flashed g1 and told her it might be something screwy going on with it.
At the end of the visit he got the warranty department to send her a new one because "the menu button isn't working" yeah yeah... lol
Anyways... should I un root it anyways for when I have to send it? Thanks for the help man. I've been a member here since I had a dash a couple of years ago but usually don't post cause I sually find the answers to my problems by searching... the ol art of searching ah
Thanks again... ill check the un rooting thread again and will try that.
lol i've only been here a few days and i learned a lot. the people here are generally very helpful and i find almost all of my questions answered so i don't have that many posts either.
Ya you should unroot it because you don't want to have your RMA rejected and besides.... its getting RMA'ed anyway so whats there to lose

the responce i got back both times i asked was that as long as they can get the phone back to a stock rom, it didnt matter what rom was on it, ive yet to have an issue sending back g1's with cupcake on them before cupcake was released

If you have a SIM with no data plan, you can just bring up the settings menu, connect to WiFi, and then activate. How? Connect using adb shell and type:
Code:
am start -a android.intent.action.MAIN -n com.android.settings/.Settings

I really do hope someone will find some interesting uses for safe mode. Since I've already activated with my Google account, Gmail and Market both worked fine for me in safe mode. The only difference I see so far is that all widgets are disabled except: Analog clock, Calendar, Music, Picture frame, and Search. It did not bypass the "connect-the-dots" security drawing pattern for me. Anyone notice some other differences in safe mode?

accelerometer not working

I'm not sure it has to do with this, but I flashed my NAND with nandroid with one from a different G1.
and one of the axes in the accelerometer doesn't work at all (its stuck).
any idea how to fix this ? (again,i'm not sure the nand has to do with this)
I had the same problem and ended up just doing a whip and setting everything back up. I had a black G1 that I traded for a White one. It might of also been that i flashed a different version of JF on it was well but wasnt worth the time to flash back to 1.41 nand retore and then flash to 1.42. It only really took me about 15 mins to reinstall all the apps and setup options.
i think i read somewhere that accalerometer doesnt work with nandroid.... mine stopped working this week- just did a wipe and a reflash and it works fine now.....
Can Someone help me? I was playing Labyrinth and when I finish, the accelerometer has stopped working. It does not work with anything, either games or any application. nybody know how to reactivate? Thanks.
PS. I Dont make any mod on G1. It is R33 version.
PS2: It never dropped.
Hmmmm, this happened out of the blue for me a long time ago. I think I had to reinstall the firmware, and maybe even a wipe. Been fine ever since...

Accelerometer probelm - Just happened to my rooted rc33
Hey gents, this just happened to my rooted g1 yesterday.
The accelerometer now only works on one axis. I'm pretty sure its a software issue. I tested the accel using Api demo's OS/sensors. The one graphical output and the three dials at the top. The graph changes and registers the change when i rotate it but it just doesn't want to work with any programs that use the accel. ie labrynth, bubble level etc.
I'd really like to know what happened, what caused this. I didn't drop my phone or do anything of the sorts. I did max out my memory installing too many apps that day but I couldn't see that affecting it.
***re-installing is not an option if this constantly happens. I don't have a data plan to keep logging into the start screen every time I wipe my unit. I know there's a thread about getting around this but I'm still not to comfortable using the sdk.
I haven't tried to wipe and reinstall via recovery mode yet. I was wondering though,
1. how do i find out what version of jesus freak rc33 i have. I think Its 1.41 but I forget and just looking at the buildnumber i can't figure it out. and are the newer versions better should i be upgrading?
2. Is there anyway to fix this with a reinstall. Is there anyway to examine the accel. data readout or code.
3. If not, should i just try wiping and reinstalling the same version of jf rc33 or do i have to reinstall a packaged (oem) version of rc33 and loose root (i don't want that to happen, root is a necessity for me )
I'll glady post my findings and even write up the step step process. I just need some answers first.
Thanks for you help (your form seems to be the only place i get solid answers about my phone) http://forum.xda-developers.com/images/icons/icon10.gif
this happened to mine a while back. a wipe and reflash fixed it. use mybackup to quickly get back to where you were.
this just happened to me the other day i posted here about it but it might of been deleted as i was the only one to post and answered my own question through trial and error.
you might try the app bubble it might allow you to calibrate it (i didn't know this until i read it somewhere this morning) other than that when i had the issue i just reinstalled everything the old fashioned way one apk at a time although first you would need to alt+w in the loader menu then install the latest jf update

[Android] Eclair 2.1 with working wifi, GPS, sleep

Hello friends! I'm back again with the newest configuration I've found.
It's an Eclair build that runs exceptionally, with wifi, GPS and sleep working from the very first time.
If you want to try and forget your Donut build (1.6) you will have to do the following:
Choose a POLAIMG dated 20-Feb-2010 with your correct paneltype (1 is very common) and resolution from this site: http://sourceforge.net/projects/androidhtc/files/. Mine was POLAIMG-PANEL1-320.NBH (the most downloaded of them).
Download this file (http://www.homecncfun.com/wp-content/plugins/download-monitor/download.php?id=2) and extract androidinstall.tar from it. Copy it to your SD Card under a folder called "andboot":
Flash the previously downloaded .NBH file as usual.
During the boot you have to enter the Android Installer. A message will appear on the screen saying that you have to press and hold a button in order to start it. There are some buttons that are valid, for example, pressing the center button into the jog-wheel will work. Press it and hold it until the installer appears.
Select both System from NAND, Data from NAND.
Select Install.
Quit.
Let it start (slow).
What's working?
Wifi
GPS
Data connection
Phone - Calls, SMS
Sleeping (as far as I know)
USB Tethering (with PDANet)
Not working?
Camera
Audio input fails after the first use
Bluetooth
Live wallpapers
NOTE: If the screen resolution is wrong for you, you can change it modify system/build.prop. Guide here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=5709153
Enjoy!

was ALMOST about to finally try it out..
what's the gps like? is it just tomtom or whatever apps or some google thingie?
I've tried this one yesterday on SDCard with a partitioned system (cause I can't flash to NAND...) and it's very very slow
Don't know if it's better on NAND but I doubt that the difference could be so big...
I don't find it really that slow... It's a little slower than 1.6 of course, but it's still quite usable.
One thing that really put it down is that I know have an audio bug that affect the phone calls.
After calling one (or beeing called) the sound will not work (either people won't hear what I say or I won't heat people).
I have yet to try the other 2.1 build but I think this could be the end of 2.1 for the time beeing and going back to 1.6 while waiting nexus to be out in france

Hi, I installed this with the SD Method to use it from WinMobile
I once was in android but had to restart because I did not turn off key lock in windows mobile before.
But now i can't boot into android or only at 2% chance.
I get ther error "msm_i2c msm_i2c.0: Error waiting for notbusy" and android wont boot. What should I do?
I have partitioned my 8GB SDHC with gParted to "7GB Fat32/270MB EXT2/271MB EXT2"

Just reboot to WM and run haret again. After two or three attempts the
Android boot works without "Error waiting for notbusy" messages.
Regards,
Stefan
You are right, but now I enter my pin it says sim is locked and i can't unlock the phone.
I already did deactivate throttlelock and keypad lock in winmo.
Also the pin-pad is too large for my polaris.
What can I do?
And another question:
In the haret.zip there were two images, zImage and zImage-eclair.
Did I install Donut, because in my default.txt there is
set KERNEL zImage

and not zImage-eclair
if installing 2.1 than change in default.txt to zimage-eclair
if 1.6 leave it as zimage
Ok then obviously I installed donut 1.6
And I will redo with eclair 2.1 and see if I have the sim locked error and too large screen there too.
For you information, I just went back to Warm's Donut as any 2.1 build only allows me to call once then the audio will stop working. Ergo I need to reboot after each call... not usable !
Maybe people can tell me if they have the same problem or not ? Maybe it has to do with the radio that I'm using ? (I haven't updated since more than 1 year)...

Don't know why, but it's really slower than all hero or tattoo builds I tried, to make a comparison.
Maybe my SDCard isn't in its best days...
Same with eclair, keypad really to big. One complete row is missing, numbers 7,8,9,0 and enter. (even though I set lcd.density to 128 in default.txt)
And the display always turns off after one second till i use the jog wheel again.
I cant enter the pin.
OK, I just read that with "turn off pin in win mobile" it is meant to turn off phone-sim pin. And not device pin. Then I will turn on my phone in win mobile to turn off pin requirement and see if android works.
--------------------------------------------------------
Need help again.
Eclaire runs pretty smooth, I had worse expectations.
But when I click on the android logo to start, I then click skip and the only option left is to create a google account or log into an existing google account. Even if I log into the account it says I can add more google accounts or press back. But if I press back I get to the google thing again.
And more worse it costs 3G data, 0,09€/minute
EDIT: I did turn off my phone function in win mobile and instead did turn on wifi. Then it took my again 3 times to boot android, but now the wizard no longer blocks android gui. yeay
How can I turn off the phone function in android?
EDIT: found it under "Modem" pretty weird
EDIT2: Im not quite sure, but i think phone is still on, where the hack can I shut off the usage of phone

Well ... after putting back the warm donut I do can see the speed difference...
But over the two eclair builds, the kaiserdroid seemed the fastest.
There are some speed problems for some actions, but most of the time it's usable.
Anyway I went back to donut hoping to fix my problem of "one call allowed or reboot" without success... might be the new nbh that I flashed lately ... or the radio not compatible ?
I can't boot again. I tried 9 times and it show "error waiting for notbusy" every time.
Does this come from taking out the SIM card? I did this because I found no option to deactivate the phone function in android.
EDIT: Now I set the "ppp.nostart=1" and could boot into android after 2 tries withot SIM card inserted"
Wifi is really sloooooow
It is only tech-demo, wifi not really good, market place does not open, keyboard too large (fills 80% of screen), many other things.
I'll wait either for a better version of android for polaris or till I can afford a HTC desire
I have flashed my Polaris using the same nbh and rom as described in the first post. To fix the density, I tried to edit build.prop file from 160 to 120 using Astro but Astro will not save my changes to the file. I checked the file properties and I do not appear to have rw access even after issuing the $"su" and #"mount /system -o rw,remount" commands using the terminal program. I am not very Linux savvy ... have I missed something? Thanks!

enTourage eDGe Dualbook

I have an enTourage eDGe Dualbook that currently runs on Android 1.6.
I was wondering if the Android developers here have any insight into how to make applications that would apply to this device? I have an interest in making application such as a calender that will sync with Google, MSN and others. I also would like to figure out how to get Flash light on the Edge. It currently does not have Flash, but I know that other devices do have it.
Can anyone help?
I would like to do the same. I have the pocket edge running ermine
Sent from my edgejr using XDA Premium App
I have the same device but with beta ERMIN 0.9 (which is 2.2.1) i was wondering if there is any way to root it. and if its not too much trouble i would really like the market too.
Here is your answer! even if it has root idk about a custom rom or even a market
Android Police has an Article on how to root
OK, need help
After problem with market I tried lot of thing from xda to enable it, nothing worked and after I messed up with lot of things on it I "wisely" decidet to factory reset it.
I did not mentioned I rooted it before and removed some system apps with titanium backup pro
Now after reset everything worked fine till green screen of welcome and 11 steps I skipped all after conecting to wi-fi because there was no eDGe server to register me.
And after skip I got blank screen just with notification bar, after while it locked itself, unlocked it by slideing and still blank.
Like there is no Launcher app.
Now I would use update.zip for ermine but I am lost so many PE users and everything here about PE.
But I need EE original standard one, so please someone direct me to right link for matching update.zip for EE (not PE) and easy instructions because I do not remember anything how I did it last time.
Should I first downgrade to dingo than use update for ermine ???
Update: after shut down (it let me by long press rotation button) after I turn it on it stays in loop (EDGE logo with 4 dots).
resolved, loaded golden dingo then ermine.
wi-fi problem resolved by app but gapps dead for now.

[Q] Noob android question

I'm kinda new to the smart phones, and planning on getting a Samsung Galaxy S 4G. I like the specs on it.
But im so used to typing things with using the buttons on cell phones and using the up and down arrows to scroll.
I demoed the Samsung Galaxy earlier today and you scroll up and down the pages with your finger of course. is there any settings on the OS which is android to put up and down arrow keys on the screen, as well as left or right ?
any download recomendations for it ?
id rather just hold the down arrow key to scroll down then to swipe with my finger.
Also does the GPs built in on the Galaxy get the data from satelite or from the tower from T-mobile ? and do they charge u for the service ?
I am really needing help about my Samsung Galaxy GT-i9000. I've been searching the internet for 8 straight hours and still no go. Perhaps I am not good in searching or simply really not familiar with the situation. I tried searching here, too but it has now taken me a ridiculous amount of time and effort to no avail. Please bear with me. (this is my first post)
I rooted my phone about a week ago (after months of searching I finally did it!) Then it took me a while to flash a new rom. I got Darky's via the ROM downloads using Rom Manager - I was ecstatic! I was happy with it but out of curiosity I wanted to try Cyanogen 7 which, again, I flashed this morning.
I was able to flash Cyanogen 7 but for some reason the Android Market isn't working. So I decided to Restore the previous setting/rom (Darky's) but here is where the problem started.
I am now unable to use my phone. I just turn it on and I am stuck in "Galaxy S GT-I9000) forever. I press up+home+power but just goes back to the same screen. I tried down+home+power and I was just glad it worked. However, I don't know what to do. Based on what I have searched I (still unsure here ok?) might be required to flash a new base rom or kernel - really, all these information overwhelms me.
To experienced users, perhaps I don't know the right questions to ask. All I want is for me to be able to use the phone again. Please help me, 8 hours straight of searching has got me dizzied. How can I get past this screen? There are some information I've come across like flashing a base rom, which I wanted to try, but it asks for information such about my phone (such as whether it is JVx or JVy or JVanything) which I don't have because I cant get in it!
Please guide me? Thank you very much.
......Anyone know ?
Youll get used to it.

You didnt look hard enough...
Sounds like you are on a boot loop.
just download a stock rom from here and flash via Odin. Or install a custom rom via odin.
I personally semi bricked mine during and official update as I didnt remove OCLF before I did it. I just picked a rom off the thread and reflashed. I had no idea what was on there before but if you are putting a custom rom on anyway, I only did it to get rom manager working.
so long as you can get into download ( the yellow triangle) you can recover it easily in Odin.
Odin is a doddle to use aswell. Just follow the guides!
You need to wipe properly before flashing a new rom or restoring. Wipe data, cache and dalvik before restoring next time.
The reason you didn't have the market on CM7 is because you have to flash google apps (gapps) separately. This should have been explained in the thread for CM7 or on the Cyanogenmod site.
You need to read everything before you flash something, or else you'll run into problems.

You'll get used to the scrolling. If you must use other means of scrolling, Dolphin Browser HD has an option to use the volume buttons to scroll up/down the page. I'd try to get used to touch scrolling though, you don't want to wear down your hardware buttons.
The GPS built in is free, and it does use GPS satellites. Be sure to turn GPS off when you're not using it to save battery. The phone should come preloaded with Google Maps/Navigation. If it doesn't, download Google Maps from the market, it includes Google Nav.
For reasons other than navigation where you want to share your location with an app - for example, a weather app that determines your location - you can use mobile networks as a means of location. This way you can keep GPS off unless you need it for directions or navigation.

The built in GPS can actually use both sattelites and wireless networks to help get a fix on you location faster. You can choose to disable it in the settings.
Thanks guys! I actually was able to fix it a few hours after I posted here.. I didn't expect you guys to answer that quickly. I just checked back now ;-) I might have checked sooner hadn't I found a way around it.
Anyways, yes it was a boot loop. I remember finding this article saying how to fix it. It said I needed to download some files mainly Darky's and Odin. It was the first time I used Odin so I was really extra careful lol. It (flash) took me 3-4 hours because I was stuck again in boot mode. I did that process maybe around 3 or 4 times. Until now I'm not sure whether or not I completed it or simply flashed the same Darky I had as back up. I pushed too many buttons- can't remember anymore. (not so good in english, I hope I started that clearly. My first custom ROM that I got from ROM Manager is Darky's, then the fix that I attempted to use via Odin is also Darky's )
Anyway, I haven't flashed a new ROM since then. I'm going to spend a little more time with what I have. But knowing me, I probably will in a matter of days ;p
Thanks again!
