[Q] Noob android question - General Questions and Answers

I'm kinda new to the smart phones, and planning on getting a Samsung Galaxy S 4G. I like the specs on it.
But im so used to typing things with using the buttons on cell phones and using the up and down arrows to scroll.
I demoed the Samsung Galaxy earlier today and you scroll up and down the pages with your finger of course. is there any settings on the OS which is android to put up and down arrow keys on the screen, as well as left or right ?
any download recomendations for it ?
id rather just hold the down arrow key to scroll down then to swipe with my finger.
Also does the GPs built in on the Galaxy get the data from satelite or from the tower from T-mobile ? and do they charge u for the service ?

I am really needing help about my Samsung Galaxy GT-i9000. I've been searching the internet for 8 straight hours and still no go. Perhaps I am not good in searching or simply really not familiar with the situation. I tried searching here, too but it has now taken me a ridiculous amount of time and effort to no avail. Please bear with me. (this is my first post)
I rooted my phone about a week ago (after months of searching I finally did it!) Then it took me a while to flash a new rom. I got Darky's via the ROM downloads using Rom Manager - I was ecstatic! I was happy with it but out of curiosity I wanted to try Cyanogen 7 which, again, I flashed this morning.
I was able to flash Cyanogen 7 but for some reason the Android Market isn't working. So I decided to Restore the previous setting/rom (Darky's) but here is where the problem started.
I am now unable to use my phone. I just turn it on and I am stuck in "Galaxy S GT-I9000) forever. I press up+home+power but just goes back to the same screen. I tried down+home+power and I was just glad it worked. However, I don't know what to do. Based on what I have searched I (still unsure here ok?) might be required to flash a new base rom or kernel - really, all these information overwhelms me.
To experienced users, perhaps I don't know the right questions to ask. All I want is for me to be able to use the phone again. Please help me, 8 hours straight of searching has got me dizzied. How can I get past this screen? There are some information I've come across like flashing a base rom, which I wanted to try, but it asks for information such about my phone (such as whether it is JVx or JVy or JVanything) which I don't have because I cant get in it!
Please guide me? Thank you very much.

......Anyone know ?

Youll get used to it.

You didnt look hard enough...
Sounds like you are on a boot loop.
just download a stock rom from here and flash via Odin. Or install a custom rom via odin.
I personally semi bricked mine during and official update as I didnt remove OCLF before I did it. I just picked a rom off the thread and reflashed. I had no idea what was on there before but if you are putting a custom rom on anyway, I only did it to get rom manager working.
so long as you can get into download ( the yellow triangle) you can recover it easily in Odin.
Odin is a doddle to use aswell. Just follow the guides!

You need to wipe properly before flashing a new rom or restoring. Wipe data, cache and dalvik before restoring next time.
The reason you didn't have the market on CM7 is because you have to flash google apps (gapps) separately. This should have been explained in the thread for CM7 or on the Cyanogenmod site.
You need to read everything before you flash something, or else you'll run into problems.

You'll get used to the scrolling. If you must use other means of scrolling, Dolphin Browser HD has an option to use the volume buttons to scroll up/down the page. I'd try to get used to touch scrolling though, you don't want to wear down your hardware buttons.
The GPS built in is free, and it does use GPS satellites. Be sure to turn GPS off when you're not using it to save battery. The phone should come preloaded with Google Maps/Navigation. If it doesn't, download Google Maps from the market, it includes Google Nav.
For reasons other than navigation where you want to share your location with an app - for example, a weather app that determines your location - you can use mobile networks as a means of location. This way you can keep GPS off unless you need it for directions or navigation.
(from... Evo/MIUI/Tapatalk)

The built in GPS can actually use both sattelites and wireless networks to help get a fix on you location faster. You can choose to disable it in the settings.

Thanks guys! I actually was able to fix it a few hours after I posted here.. I didn't expect you guys to answer that quickly. I just checked back now ;-) I might have checked sooner hadn't I found a way around it.
Anyways, yes it was a boot loop. I remember finding this article saying how to fix it. It said I needed to download some files mainly Darky's and Odin. It was the first time I used Odin so I was really extra careful lol. It (flash) took me 3-4 hours because I was stuck again in boot mode. I did that process maybe around 3 or 4 times. Until now I'm not sure whether or not I completed it or simply flashed the same Darky I had as back up. I pushed too many buttons- can't remember anymore. (not so good in english, I hope I started that clearly. My first custom ROM that I got from ROM Manager is Darky's, then the fix that I attempted to use via Odin is also Darky's )
Anyway, I haven't flashed a new ROM since then. I'm going to spend a little more time with what I have. But knowing me, I probably will in a matter of days ;p
Thanks again!

[Q] Phone stopped working and won't start again

Hi, I have a g1 that has suddenly stopped working - when I start it I see the t-mobile screen and then it switches to the android screen and just stays like that and doesnt start.
It stalled while making a call and I was not able to restart it.
I have tried wiping everything from recovery console (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=566669) and re-flashing my phone with my old firmware (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=811620)
I don't know what's next here - can anyone please help?
some more background:
I had the phone for two years here in the US and have traveled out side of the country with it for several trips with no problems whatsoever, however, this phone I have given to my niece who doesnt live in the US.
The reason i'm saying this is that maybe the cause is a radio problem of some sort...
Let me know if you think of something coz I really don't know what do to next
Thanks,
e.
First of all, wrong section.. (Please post in Q&A)
If you had poked around and used the search feature, i'm pretty sure you can find what you are looking for
but anyhow, you need to flash another rom (via recovery) assuming you have already rooted because you somehow corrupted the system partition.
Thanks for the reply, I tried using cyanogen's mod but it didnt get me anywhere, I will try different mods but could this be a radio issue? is there a way to check that?
p.s. I did a thorough search of the forums and that's how i did all the things b4 posting but then I got stuck...
Hi, sorry I posted in the wrong section, just noticed what you mean.
Can any of the admins move this thread to q&a (or can I do it myself somehow)?
Data?

My friends phone is doing something extremely similar. He gave it to me to play with to make sure he wasn't mad, and it was actually the phone having issues.
Upon playing with it for a few hours problems started to occur. It would randomly shut off, then not want to reboot unless left sitting. It would get after the ROM screen and then shut off. I noticed that that a quick was to crash it was to start browsing the Internet over Wi-Fi. After a few pages loading and moving around the pages as they loaded the poor phone would just turn off.
Since he is using another phone in the mean time, I got his G1 without a SIM card. I was playing games on it, poking around in applications and more and the phone wouldn't turn off. I wasn't till I enabled Wi-Fi that problems started happening. I'm not sure if the Wi-Fi driver is part of the baseband unit or not but it seems that the more data the phone uses (3G or Wi-Fi) heightens its chance of turning off.
To get the phone to boot again I either have to take the battery our for a few minutes or leave it off for a while. Upon which time it will book as if nothing happens.
I also noted that every time it boots it shows an exception error related to "gapps" and you have to click force quit. His phone is running CyanogenMod 4.2. Also the Home key doesn't function, but this is software related because it can turn the screen on.

[IRC] #HTC_MT4GS - Support Channel for MyTouch4G Slide

Noticed you guys didn't have a support channel 24/7 in case people have issues with their device. I've set this up and granted I can't stay awake 24/7 I would like to see this community more involved. The more support you have for the community the more support for the phone So come in, chat, ask questions, its all up to you!

Thank you for this !
This is a good idea.
I tried to connect last night through the device, but it wasn't working out too well.
Is there a recommended way to connect through the phone? Maybe an app that works through the T-Mo network?
Also - Since this has the potential to let people work things out much more quicly/easily... Can I request that if problems get solved or new information is discovered and there are no threads about it, can one be made after the fact?
Anyone who wasn't in the irc chatroom won't have access to that fix otherwise.

i signed in with the app AndroidIRC, no problem. seems to work better on wifi, but i've used it on the mobile network in the past. i believe the app is a couple bucks in the market.
it would make sense to me to post any discoveries found in the channel into these forums
edit: can't seem to connect to irc.freenode.net via the app while connected to the mobile network only. it keeps saying something about needing to identify via SASL to use this server.

On a quick search, that's the only one with SASL support, which is where my problem was. When I get the chance to get market apps again it's on my buy list.
I tried to log in through the web page, but on the mobile it was no good on mobile network - I imagine it would be fine on the device through wifi and i'll try sometime. I have no trouble logging in through the webpage on a computer on a wifi network.
The last time I used IRC, mIRC was pretty new, so was my first brush with it over cellular networks. If you had no issues using that app then that'll probably be my answer for out and about.

That would be fantastic - probably the best way. Over time we can compile a pretty thorough FAQ, if people use it, and the easy web login makes that more likely.
andChat is a way to go.

hboot and recovery
I had my phone rooted for months (I think I did it properly using the method from unLocker.com, although when the hboot would load it would say no image found) Then all I would do is run recovery (clockwork I believe) to flash new ROMs... but now I am trying to upgrade to pyr-o-ice 1.1.3 from 1.1.2 and everytime I try to run recovery, it just brings me back to the hBoot. I think I messed things up when I downloaded the Clockwork app from the market and let it do it's "thing". I think it changed my hboot from 1.44.00something to 1.44.1107 (that may be the problem). I have been trying for hours to re-root using the method from unlocker but it is not working. Can anyone help me get recovery working again to flash new ROMs? p.s. Sorry if a solution is already given somewhere, I have looked for a while and haven't found it.

What's your exact HBOOT version number?
my hboot is 1.44.1107
oh wow! I just tried using the using the clockworkmod ROM manager app from the market and it actually worked this time to flash pyr-o-ice 1.1.3_2. I don't know why it didn't work the several times that I tried this before. I guess I will just use this app to go into recovery and flash ROM in the future (kind of better anyways because I don't need to do a battery pull now everytime to go into hboot) apparently this app works to flash stuff. I haven't yet tried to go into Recovery the old way and I guess I don't need to worry about it any more.
It's not necessary to do a battery pull to get into recovery...
...power off (not hibernate, turn that fastboot off in settings!) and wait for it to turn completely off.
...hold the 'Volume Down' button, and then press and release the 'Power' button (maybe 2 or 3 times if necessary while holding volume down...)
When you see the Hboot screen release volume down...
Let it load and settle for a minute, then choose 'recovery' from the menu...
...and that's it.
Not sure where you had to do a battery pull, unless you didn't have 'fastboot' turned off from in the ROM settings menu?
Go to your app drawer, then open the 'Settings' apk...
...find 'Power' in the list and tap it...
...scroll to the bottom and un-check the 'Fastboot' option.
The 'Fastboot' option in the settings -> power menu is a deep-sleep hibernation mode that turns almost everything off, but leaves the tiniest bit of power to one chip so it can wake everything up.
When it's ' off ' in HTC Fastboot mode, pressing the power button wakes the device up skipping a lot of things like hboot and so on to get your device from ' off ' to working in just a few seconds, instead of the minutes a normal boot takes.
Anyways, glad you found a way to get it all working!
That is probably why I would have to do a battery pull (fastboot was never turned off to my knowledge). One problem though... I still can't find the option "power" in the settings menu to actually turn off fastboot. I am running pyr-o-ice 1.1.3_2 right now (that I was able to flash using the ROM Manager app made by Clockworkmod) When I select Settings; it brings me into a series listed as the following:
WIRELESS & NETWORKS... Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Data Usage, More DEVICE... Sound, Display, Storage, Battery, Apps
EXTRA SETTINGS... Toggles, Clock, Battery Text, Custom carrier label
PERSONAL... Accounts and sync, Location services, Security, Language & input, Backup & reset
SYSTEM... Date & time, Accessibility, Developer options, About phone.
I couldn't find the fastboot setting anywhere in these. Also, I think something is wrong with the Recovery that I was using before ever since my Hboot changed to the 1.44.1107 it is now, because when I am in hboot and try to go into Recovery, it just loops back to Hboot. Luckily that ROM Manager App was able to flash the ROM (pyr-o-ice 1.1.3_2) but I don't know if I would recommend that to anyone else to use as I think when I installed ROM Manager and ran some of it's features, that it probably what changed my HBoot version (and subsequently messed up my ability to use recovery straight from hboot). I guess I am OK though since I can at least flash ROMs, but I am limited from some of the other features the old recovery had to offer.
OK! So, so, sorry... I just went and did a power down and tried to go into hboot (volume down and power buttons) w/out battery pull and it DID go into hboot. I guess fastboot is turned off (even I couldn't find it anywhere in settings still). Sorry for confusing anybody (I'm a little confused myself) And now when I chose RECOVERY, it did work fine ( I have no idea what happened). I guess I just always assumed I needed to do a battery pull since that is what I had to do way back when I first rooted my phone and started flashing ROMs.
I still can't really get my USB to recognize on my computer though with this pyr-o-ice desense 1.1.3_2 (I got the Dual Mount SD app from the market but am having "weirdness"... when I plug in the USB to the phone and PC, I hear the "bloop bloop" sound but no icon pops up in the "devices with removable storage" catagory of my computer. I can only get it to recognize as a drive by selecting the "Power On Auto Mount" feature in Dual Mount SD app and then doing a power off and back on w/ the phone plugged in the whole time via USB to PC... and then that is even hit or miss. sometimes it comes up as a drive and sometimes it doesn't.) I would really, really love to get my phone to recognized as a drive just by plugging it in w/out having to do a power off and back on since I love taking pictures with the phone and getting them to PC asap. If anyone knows any tricks to help me out that would be super cool. And P.S.: sorry I'm such a noob, I am trying really hard and am a bit intimidated by complete lack of knowledge about most of this stuff.

[Q] Galaxy Ace (S5830i) headache with stock email deletion

HI guys, I'm hoping you can help me with a problem that's led me to start threatening my galaxy ace (S5830i) with a hammer.
Actually it's not the phone's fault it's purely my own stupidity, but none-the-less I'm here for help because I've spent all day and night trawling the net, trying to figure out how to proceed to resolve my issue on my own but I simply cannot make sense of the conflicting information I'm finding.
I promise you thing thing if nothing else, I have tried my very best to read around a hundred other forums, pages, and how 'to's but I'm finding that I have no resolution that I can work with because either:
- The tutorials turned out to be for the S5830 - not the i model - when I got to the forum
- The youtube videos all seem to be spoken in accents I cannot understand or not explained clearly, or are too technical
- Links I go to to get apk files etc are broken, wrong or leading me up another path I cannot follow
- Software does NOT look on my screen as it does on tutorials or websites (SDK for example)
- The people explaining the resolution type with such poor English I cannot understand what they're actually saying
- The solutions that work for others are too technical or advanced for me to understand and I'm finding it difficult to learn as I go (apart frm the root instructions which I found quite easy)
Anyway, I'll start at the beginning:
I have a samsung galaxy ace (S5830i) running:
- Gingerbread 2.3.6
- Baseband version S5830iXXLK1
- Kernel version 2.6.35.7
- Build number GINGERBREAD.XXLK3
I've already rooted it so I have superuser access, and I managed that perfectly well on my own
I installed titanium backup and somehow I managed to uninstall the stock email that comes with the phone. I think this is my problem because I now cannot download anything from google play, nor can I add a new gmail account to do so, so I'm stuck in no mans land not able to use googleplay (because my gmail account is now missing from my phone) nor can I seem to figure out how to get th apk file directly into the phone so that I can start fresh.
I'm also absolutely stuck on how to flash the phone and start again because nothing I seem to read is explaining it in simple clear terms that a layman can understand. When I do find a simple explanation, I find it's only for the non 'i' version of the phone, or if I find a simple instruction it's zip files for the rom do not contain all the files I need to use with odin v1.5
Also, there are conflicting explanations on flashing the rom on different forums/sites so I dare not use one over the other because another one contradicts it. I do not want to ruin my phone as right now it still basically works for now as a phone.
In my phone menu, the gmail icon is still there, just not the icon/app that said "email". The icon is now missing from my menus and with it there is now no way to use the play services without a gmail account on the phone.
When I click the gmail icon, it stats to open and then just shuts off quickly, not opening gmail, so I'm pretty sure all this is due to me deleting the email app using titanium backup.
Make sense?
What I'd really be grateful for is if on of you guys could help me out and explain in very simple terms what I need to do to either install the apk directly (preferred) so that I can add a gmail account to the phone and get access to google play again, or failing that a simple how to flash the rom with stock gingerbread, together with links to software that's known to be bonafide.
I am literally being driven mad going around in circles on forums and sites to keep going back to square one.
Any help will be very gratefully received. Or I'm afraid this may mean I'm going to smash my new phone int a wall and never use a smartphone again, because obviously I'm too stupid to play around with them on my own.
I really appreciate your help if someone would be able to invest a little time here.
Thanks very much for your time, guys
Jobeeey
additional info
Right, these are the instructions I found on this forum, but I'm unclear if I'm approaching this right..
Flashing s5830i with Odin v1.85
1.Turn off the phone and put it in Download mode by pressing Power+Volume Up+volume down.
2.Open Odin v1.85.Run as Administrator!.
3.Put the files in Odin and don't touch the settings
4.If it's a one-file firmware put it in PDA section.
If it's multiple put the files in the correct section.
5.Click start and don't touch the phone!Don't turn off computer and don't unplug the phone! It will reboot automatically and the first boot will take some time,so don't panic!
Click to collapse
I've found a rom (which is a single file) and if I'm reading this right I place that in the PDA section of Odin after installing the usb drivers onto my pc (done that and windows recognizes my phone in the sense that it isn't now hassling me for drivers every two seconds).
Ok.. so I seem to have got the correct rom for my specific ace model.. and the instructions seem to be that I now:
1) Connect usb cable
2) Boot my phone into download mode (I can do that I think).. but at what point do I press vol down to download a new os.. before or after pressing start in Odin?
3) Open Odin and add file as in my attached screenshot (I can do that)
4) Click 'start' in Odin
5) Wait for my phone to reboot
And that should be job done, the phone should be flashed with the stock rom again and that should get me back on track, right? Or am I about to screw up my phone and ruin it even further?
Thanks for reading. I hope someone can advise if I'm doing this right as I've seen other forums say that I should tick the 'Re-partition' box, and other that say I shouldn't, and this one says nothing about it at all.
This is one of the tings that's confusing me, and once I'm now flashing a phone for the first time it's flippin scary to do it on my lonesome!
This is what I mean..
I've just tested going into download mode with odin ready, and the phone gets there (vol up+down + power on).. but each time it gets into download mode it seems to disconnect from odin and no com port is open. I get the windows device disconnected/connected beeping and the connection seems to sever.
What the Fffff...
This is exactly what I'm talking about.. nothing seems to be working like it's meant to be and I'm getting nowhere with any instructions I can find after god knows how many hours researching this.
:crying:
update (lol)
Mornin all,
So, just in case anyone finds this useful..
The flashing problem is kind of irrelevant now because:
A) Odin (tried several versions) simply will not stay connected to my phone when it boots into download mode, and having checked many tutorials for this it sees that this is a problem some of us cannot get past.
Anyway, one of the methods to resolve this was to wipe the cache and clear all data etc, which I did, and now my phone is stuck on the "pres the android" screen, and my phone will no longer get past that. Tried pressing clockwise in all four corners but still nothing.
No probs.. so we move on to a new step of trying to split the roms via cygwin, but guess what? Every single time I try to download the cygwin files, that freezes at about 98% and will not download, no matter which mirror I select.
So, this is what I call a curse that isn't going to be lifted by me no matter hat. It's not not meant to be.
Therefore, what I'm going to do is take it to a local shop that unlocks mobiles and give it to them to flash back to stock rom for me.
If that doesn't work, do you know what I'm gonna do?
Nothing. Because there's nothing you can do when the processes do not follow the same progress as they do in the tutorials.
I hope other novice S5830i users save themselves all his time and trouble and don't bother following the same process and become locked out of their phone at the touch android screen.
Update
Yipee,
Right, I stumbled across a solution that worked for me.
What I did was get my 2gb msd card that came with the phone and slapped MindCR v1.0.12 on the card and whacked that in my phone (this bypassed not being able to get a new rom on the sd card as it wasn't unmounted before the crash, so my pc wouldn't recognise the date to put it on via the pc).
Then I updated the rom from that 2gb card (vol up + menu + power to get into recovery mode) and it took it a few minutes to update the firmware and give me back the full use of my phone, and with a shiny new os on it. Whoop!
I didn't bother with CWM as I'd forgotten to add it before flashing, but it worked none-the-less and I'm now back in business (wiped it manually).
As it turned out this version of MindCR works really well so far as I can tell. I realise there are updated roms now but I've come to the conclusion after the scare I had that if you're not entirely sure what you're doing, it's best to leave it alone if it ain't broke.
SO.. now I have a phone with what seems to be a better os than the stock and less bloatware on it, no phone problems I can see after thorough testing... and from what I can tell it turned out to be better than it was before the disaster.
And I learned a bit in the process. Like for example, don't feck around removing apps from smartphones with titanium unless you've backed them up and you're prepared to stress out for over 20hrs wondering what to do about it.
And, also, don't expect much help from a forum because you may not always get it. << That' not a dig at xda by the way. It's just a BIG forum so your threads may not be seen by the right person before they get buried in past pages.
Hope my little journey helps another unsuspecting S5830i user who comes across the thread.

[Q] I9000 Not working due software mess-up

Hey guys!
First off, i was searching through loads of forums and attempted different solutions. Anything to get it back working. This only made it worse
What happened was as follows:
After having CM 10.1 or some version of it (had the OS at 4.3 i believe), my phone was very slow, so slow in fact that i got so mad at it that i almost bit through it. So one day when i was in a tent at the foot of a mountain all alone (not that long ago) i decided to rollback the phone to its original state from backup i made some months ago before i upgraded the OS. At the same time just before this i backed up the current build just in case. Using ClockWorkMod 3pointsomething.
It went through everything and then asked me: Do you want to root this device? (or something in those lines). I, having no clue, clicked one of the million "no" on the screen.
After this it rebooted with errors saying "Can't detect this drive can't detect that drive". In other words, it couldn't detect niether Internal SD nor External SD. While having the Samsung logo being displayed without booting if i didn't go into "Volume Up, Menu Key and Start your tiny engines!".
I thought i could fix it and looked through tremendous amount of internets in attempt to fix it. Neither Odin nor Heimdall Frontend could detect the device even after installing the drivers and samsung kies and messing about with those two in between.
After a while i ended up with "Phone . . ! in a orange triangle . . PC" aka black screen of death, while the phone can go into download mode. Which in my hand is equally useless as no program can detect it still.
Now i just decided to start a new thread even though there is endless amount of other threads but none seem to cover exactly this as i haven't yet managed to fix it. Plus a response on progress is always pleasant as i personally don't know when i succeed unless phone works fully again.
How bad off am i?
Any input will be greatly appreciated! :victory:
Hoping not to have to spend money on a new one and as far as i've gathered this can be solved - Anybody can give me some tips on where to look or what i could try?

First you are posting in the wrong location as i9000 has its own forum here for Q&A and others too
second click on My Android Solutions (link below) and try methods to fix USB connection problems first after that get into download mode and use a rescue kit from MY Android Collections (link below) or follow this to flash a Gingerbread JVU stock ROM
Check this out! You , YES! you are an " Android ". Not your phone but U.

Stock i9003 stuck at Samsung Logo - what are my options for recovering data?

Hi All,
This is my first post here even though I've been following the posts/threads here for more than year since I own Google Nexus 4 and a rooted Amazon Kindle Fire.
My wife has a Samsung Galaxy S i9003 and it recently went loco without warning. It now reboots till the Samsung logo screen and stays there. It has the stock Froyo 2.2 as the Middle East never got anything later than that.
1) I've tried the power button + volume button + home button technique to get to recovery mode but it never works.
2) I cannot shut down the phone and the only option is to remove the battery to do so.
3) I know there's a way of loading a new OS/firmware over it but that's the last resort.
What she really wants is her Contacts and SMS messages back. For some strange reason, her POS Samsung didn't sync her phone address book with her Google account. We're really done with Samsung and their ****ty attempts at forcing users to use their crappy Samsung Store (we can't install Google Play in her phone) but before I smash it into pieces, I need this data back.
Any ideas guys? Any suggestions/recommendations/tips will be highly appreciated!
Her next phone will be a Nexus 5, but until it arrives, I need to somehow get her data back.
Cheers.

Greetings;
1st I AGREE WITH YOU!! S***ty Samsung
Ok Let's review some things:
1) I've tried the power button + volume button + home button technique to get to recovery mode but it never works.
A: Remove USB Cable (or Charger). Remove and place back your Battery. Then try again.
2) I cannot shut down the phone and the only option is to remove the battery to do so.
A: That's alright for now.
3) I know there's a way of loading a new OS/firmware over it but that's the last resort.
A: You said you wanted your contacts (her contacts).
If your contacts are syncronized with Google account, then you're good to go.
Else, there is a way to retrieve them through "adb". I read that somewhere a long time ago. (I never attemped - so i don't know how to do it)
Flashing a new Firmware:
If you're willing to use a GingerBread Custom Rom:
Go for DDLF2 Custom Rom (It's way better that the stock ROM)
Link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2329200
Follow the thread instructions.
Note: If you prefer a better ROM try Nameless Rom (with Greenify and xPosed App - So you can save some Battery). - I Don't recommend doing this if you are very inexperienced.
But proceed with caution. Learn everything you can before attempting this.
Specially Learn about EFS (in case you lose your IMEI)
Q: Why Greenify and xPosed?
A: Any Cyanogen Rom will eat up your battery pretty fast...
Other Tips:
- Search the forum for ODIN or HEIMDALL to flash roms
- Learn how to ROOT your Device (CF-ROOT Flashable File) (Wich Includes ClockWorkMod Recovery and Will also ROOT your Device)
Hope this helps you out.
Let me know if you need further help.
Press Thank Button if it Helped you as this will keep me motivated to help either with tutorials, links, files apps etc...
Thanks for the reply and the assist! You're the only one who actually bothered replying, which is quite sad.
I'll try out the options you've given. Honestly, I don't give a $h!t about the phone, will probably burn it or sell it off. I just need her Contacts. She did have Google Sync enabled for her Contacts but it never worked and she never checked.
I've replaced this POS with a Nexus 5 and she loves it.
=) Well the device seems to be recoverable. The contacts too if she had her contacts synchronized with her google account.
All she has to do is login on her google account with her new android.
And yes i seem to be the last guy on earth having this device (partially) working.
