Just like many others, my Nexus buttons won't lit up after I flashed to custom desire roms. To enable it, we need to have a script running in the background. That's where GScript application comes to rescue. You can download the lite version from Market Place. After you have it installed, please follow the following instructions
1. Download and extract the attached file to your [SDCARD]://gscript/
2. Start GScript lite application
3. Menu > Add script > Load file >LED_ON.sh
4. Make sure you check "Needs SU?"
5. Press "Save"
After completed the given steps, you will see the "LED_ON" from the list. You would need to execute (run) it by a single tap on "LED_ON".
It will prompt for root permission, please make sure you allow the script to run as root
** You should ONLY run this ONCE each time you reboot ( restart ) your phone
This is only a temporary workaround until someone make changes to the kernel driver.
Features:
1. Lit up the capacitive buttons when your screen is on
2. Turn off capacitive buttons when your screen is off
Regards,
Kenny N
so do i have to manually run the script every time i turn the screen off.
No - when you turn off the screen, the script will automatically turn off the capacitive buttons. when you turn on the screen, the script will automatically turns on the capacitive buttons and it will make sure the LED remains lit up
how can i install the script ? and seems like a good idea
rather than using gscript and having to manually run the script couldn't you put it someplace on the phones memory like /system/etc/init.d and have it loaded during boot
id test the theory but im not running the desire rom
So I'm curious, what exactly is this doing?
Does this keep the trackball, and the buttons (back/menu/home/search) buttons "lit" when the screen is on?
I didn't know the buttons were backlit. Wonder if this could be ported to Cyanogen?

I'll give this a go when I go back to a desire rom.
I am one of those unlucky people with no capacitive lights for desire roms.

Ohh i get it, yeah, my buttons do light up (never really noticed before, never had a problem with them to really have to look at them heh)....
So i take it the backlight doesn't work on desire roms then? and this is a fix for that? okay sorry for the dumb question earlier heh.
Yeah, my nexus one buttons do backlight now that I'm looking at it. =)
I would need to rewrite the codes in order for it to run along with /system/etc/init.d - or else it will end up with an endless startup

Kenny N

The script checks for the current state of your screen. It will maximise the capacitive brightness when your screen is on and turn it off when your screen is off.

There's a button to do that. Why do you need software?
Anyway, I'm not sure if this is for power off or screen off, and there currently isn't a definite answer on the thread (or in the OP!)

Thanks. I can understand a software button so you can quicklink and have 1 touch for power off, but can't understand one for locking the device. We already have a dedicated button for that.

Cause I don't want to always press the hard button to lock the device and prefer to do it by sofware.
I tried this application before but some time cannot lock the screen. Thanks anyway!

well in this case install S2U2 and paste a link in the shortcut and then your problem is solved. otherwise install one touch power button and it makes your device sleep right away and at the same time locked
Hello,
Would someone be able to create a mod that turns off the capacitive buttons lights while we are using/browsing/playing with our phones? It's annoying and serves no purpose. I tried to search but nothing came up. Thank you!
Second this. I'd like to be able to turn them off/on, but I'd even go for a permanent disable.
Anyone... Crickets...
Might be able to use these threads as a starting point:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=711847
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=6855691&postcount=4
On our device, leds-microp seems to point to the notification LED near/inside the speaker port at the top. However, while searching through root explorer, looks like ours might be located here:
/sys/devices/platform/leds-gpio/leds/button-backlight/brightness
Edit: Ok, leds-gpio is definitely the correct path for our device. Just tried creating a gscript like in the threads above, but using the leds-gpio path and it kills the backlight on the bottom buttons, but they just come right back on lol...crap.
Going to try their other suggestions in that thread like removing or messing with the trigger file.
Edit2: Ok, here's a method that will work once per boot. Create a gscript with the following code and put a shortcut on one of your screens. You only need to press it once and then you're good until you reboot.
Code:
chmod 644 /sys/devices/platform/leds-gpio
echo 0 > /sys/devices/platform/leds-gpio/leds/button-backlight/brightness
Once you reboot, the permissions are reset to their default settings on /sys/devices/platform/leds-gpio so that's why it only works once per boot. If we can somehow get this script to run at boot, it would essentially do what we want.
Checkout LEDs Hack on the market, its free and it does exactly this.
It supports the Nexus One, Incredible, Droid, Desire, EVO, MyTouch Slide & Hero.

Enjoy.
Okay so im having a little project to get rid of using power button, cuz mine is really "soft" and i believe someday it will stop responding...
Im currently using few apps&tricks:
Turning off screen:
Screen Off & Lock
Turning on the screen:
Volume key wake
or as in most roms now, its enable-able in settings/tweaks
Rebooting, entering recovery or bootloader:
Quick Boot (Reboot)
And recovery:
4EXT Recovery Touch
Im currently running cm7mod rom and i am trying to find a code or good replacement to open "cm7 power button menu or advanced boot menu" if its called that, to open from shortcut or different key then long press power button. And another one for now is taking a screen shot from different combo then "power button+home" I know there is some apps to take screenshots but i would prefer to edit some files myself to make it happen.
Hope this helps somebody with same issues and maybe someone can give me some pointers!
PEACE
Thanks for the tips.
I'm sure this will come in handy for people who're wearing out their power button (like me!!)

Hey, thanks for that video. Makes for an interesting party trick!!
But the problem with this is phone unlocking inside your pocket, and secondly, continuous polling of the proximity sensor is going to gobble your battery up pretty fast. But i'll have to try it out for atleast a day to support that theory.
Thanks for the info anyway.
Did anyone try to use warranty because of the power button? mine is going softer every week...

Good news coming for your project in the next couple of days. Need some finetuning, but it's looking promising.
You won't be able to simply edit stuff to make it work on other roms, but Reaper will have it.
Cheers

Yummy, more mischief from the chef!!
I've always used Screen off apps on all my devices !
Even since the days of WinMo there was such app
One of the first apps I install on my phone when I load a New ROM is screen off and lock
I don't need the volume wake though - that would just wear out the volume buttons when I already use it for music control
Under construction...please delete
how much battery can we save anyway? those are very tiny light..
personally I wouldn`t use such a script...just because the batt save might not be that good and beside that when your phone hangs or somethin` like that whne you are touching screen those nice lights are telling you that ur touchscreen is working and you are not tryin` to wake a turned off phone

i think this is only possible with a kernel which supports BLN
and at the moment we dont have such a kernel for our device
Is this script still in the work? Any update? I need it for my Samsung Vibrant
anything yet? beta or test is welcomed..volunteering as tester
Isn't there no news about this?
I use screendim to dim a lot the screen light to read on darkness, but when i touch the screen the buttons flash my eyes .

Same here it drives me crazy have tried a few apps but none of them work and I posted in the Q&A forum twice and never found a way to KILL those pesky lights I would really like to seen this working.
I'll try a hard thing yo solve this , i'll paint my screen protector with a permanent marker (maybe blue one) to dim permanently those buttons .
kingsonwongs has integrated this feature in his shadow0-rom

that's why I prefer his ROM cause afaik it's the only one with this feature
I'll ask to other developers to add this, i didn't know that this was possible .
Thanks

what feature? the BLN?!
turn off the backlight of the buttons (or modify the time that they remain on). I'm not sure because i didn't try that rom yet.
Saw some requests for the possibility to disable the capacitive buttons. So I made 2 zips, one to disable the buttons and another to enable them again.
It's of course best used in conjunction with on screen buttons
The buttons still lights up when touched, but no vibration response and the buttons are deactivated. I'll look into disabling the lights also if theres a demand for it
Just flash either one of the zips from recovery, and reboot.
Both are tested with Foxhounds rom (ME2), but should work on any Touchwiz roms (And possibly AOSP roms (let me know if you test it)).
Enjoy!

Completely okay
People activate on screen buttons with this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2285624
And like the guy in the 2nd post is saying, he always touches the capacitive buttons accidentaly.
This mod disable the buttons functionality, so this doesn't happen
In regard to the light issue.. I've forgot there was a setting for it!
Hope I made myself clear!
