.vol files - General Questions and Answers

Hi!
Tried searching about this, but can't find any easy answers.
My HD2 is full of .vol files on the unit storage which is using a lot of memory. Can I delete these files, or are they important? Like cuengine.vol and pim.vol.
I know this question may seem retarded to some, but I'm a rookie on these kind of things.

Pim.vol is you contacts and other pim info. You can't delete it, and you don't want to. You can edit it (remove old tasks and calendar items). SK Tools is probably the best way to do it. You can also reduce the size of cemail.vol by deleting old texts and emails. I don't know what cuengine.vol is, but I doubt you want to erase it. You pretty much want to leave them all alone (particularly the ones on the device root). You can delete a few, like uploader.vol, if it really bugs you, or maybe some of the facebook databases, if you use the facebook app. You can also delete album.vol off your sd card root. I don't know why, but on my sd card, album.vol grew to 9MB. I deleted it a few months ago, and it's been 32 kb since then.

Thanks! Yeah, I think I'll just leave them Found something else I could delete!

missing file issue?

Since I can't post in the q & a forum I am posting here but mods feel free to move it. So I have a wm6.1 device and a Mac computer and I regularly send files, like cab and music files with out an issue. However, today I noticed that I send a music file like usual and the file is no where to be found on the devices however space about the same size as the file is being taken up. So I send another two files(one music and one cab file) with out an issue at all. Then later on I send a cab file, but I don't see it on the device even though space is being take up. This may have happened prior to this, but I didn't realize it or something. So how can A) regain that space by deleting those files not showing up, or B) find the files that are not showing up and use them as I intended to. I am loosing space because of this. Option of last(and I mean last) resort is a hard rest which I don't like to do. Thank you....

get a good file browser and search for the missing files. You may want to use a wild card search (*.cab,*.mp3)
if you still can not find them look in the folders in /Windows and /Temp or or equivalent on the device
well i am using total commader so I dunno how good that is or not. Not to mention I have done what you suggested and even searched for files added with in the last 3 days and nothing on all fronts but yet the sapce is being taken up by something that I can't seem to find on my device. Memory maid was no help either(granted I only did a clean up). But thank you.
have you tried using the default file explorer?

Memory card and deleting files

I just got my sprint HTC Pro and I cannot find anywhere in the instructions how to make the darn thing default to saving files to the memory card. Second how in the heck do you delete those annoying music files that come pre-installed?!!
Also once the memory card is inserted i see no easy way to remove it?
Sorry for the nooby questions.

Hey and welcome...reading not only the manual but here on XDA will help you alot. You need to install Diamond Tweak and or Advanced Config they will do alot for your device such as storing items to default locations... example pictures, videos, music etc.... If you read, you will educate yourself and get more responses. Typically questions like this go unanswered.
I dont think you can delete system files, but you can try using total commander...do a search for it and see if it will let you.
The music files are actually in the My Documents folder, and I believe there are others in a different folder, though I can't recall the name since it isn't in my device anymore..
The best thing to do and the best way to learn is to use the search button, explore the forum, and explore your device.
Btw when you say to change the default location to save files, what program are you referring to? and what do you mean by installing the memory card, and what would you consider an easy way to uninstall it?
Have fun with your new device! It's really the most amazing on the market

Failed installs

Hi, I've tried searching the forum but can't find an answer to me query.
I've tried to install a cab on my Omnia (for anyone considering buying one, don't) and it failed now the 6MB of free space on my phone is gone without a program showing on the un-install menu to remove to free it up again. Essentially I have converted my phone into an expensive paperweight, and it's not even very good at that as it's quite windy here today. I can't send text messages or launch any programs as there's not even enough memory for that. Any ideas on how I can make my phone usable again, if I had space to back up my phone numbers I'd hard reset but I'm not mad keen on loosing my newer contacts.
Thanks in advance, or at least thanks for looking.
It seems to be that those files are somewhere in windows folder, by usinf file explorer try to delete the files that you are not using from my document, application and data, temp and also delete the browsing history and cookies from IE or opera mobile also you cane use a program called clear temp to remove unused files you can download it from here http://www.freewarepocketpc.net/ppc-download-cleartemp-v1-0.html
Enjoy....

Need names of default files on htc

I accidentally erased a name of a file using total commander and can't undo myself.
My files show:
//Plugins
Application Data
ConnMgr
Content
Documents and Settings
Music
My Documents
Programs
Storage Card
Temp
Windows
and "wrong name because I deleted it" (in the folder is Manilla_20100401....)
Can someone please let me know what that file name should be? Most of my programs won't fully launch now because of it.
Thank you for your help.
Michael
Just hard reset your phone. That's always an easy fix that's sure to work
I just had this phone replaced due to warranty and had finished reinstalling lots of items but stupidly hadn't made a backup. I was in fact only opening total commander to make certain it was working when I accidentally deleted the file name. I would hate to hard reset when it is just a single file name that needs replaced .... I hope.
Do you have SK Tools? If so, this is a piece of cake. Open the database tool and export Replstor as an .xml. Open it with notepad on your PC and find the name of the file or folder (and its contents) in the list. There could be a few thousand entries, so it may take a while.
Farmer Ted--I don't find any of my file names from my device in this document. Thank you for the suggestion but I am still at a loss for the original names of the folders under My Device.
If only I knew someone with an HTC Fuze, I could just look on their panel under My Device. Unfortunately, most of my folk are Iphone zealots. Their advice usually involves a different purchase!
Michael
Well, I realized after I posted that if you somehow deleted one of the databases, then it won't show up in replstor, because they're all excluded from replstor. Most of them can't be deleted, though. You should have mxip_initdb.vol, mxip_lang.vol, mxip_notify.vol, mxip_swmgmt.vol and mxip_system.vol. If you're missing one of them, then look in the\windows folder and find the rom version and copy it to the root of the device. It may not have everything it needs in it, though. Just post up if you're missing one, and I can probably tell you how to fix it (well, maybe, lol).
Thanks FarmerTed, I'll give it a go as soon as I understand what it means! Just to clarify, I didn't delete any files. I renamed it. Not on purpose. These are just the basic files under My Device.
I've renamed stuff before, too. The best thing to do if you catch yourself is to delete the entire name, then highlight another file. The messed up file will go back to the original name.
shoot. doesn't work. It would have if I would've done that in the first place though, so that is good to know.

[Q] How do you manage App folders created on SD card ?

How do you manage App folders created on SD cards ? There are too .. many get orphaned after a while.. can we have a work around to move them to a folder like program files or something like that ?
i delete them manually, as most of them are pretty self descriptive which app it came from
I agree, even i have too many folders and some of them difficult to identify.
This can be new feature request to google. Suggest you post this in the google forum.
Identify the ones you DO know and move the ones you don't to your PC or Dropbox or something. If after a month and you don't miss any of them, then wipe them out.
